this community; supporting and contributing where we can. Thinking back to my summer road trip west, the drive allowed me to see several states and a small amount of our country. I tried to imagine what it must have been like for people in the 1800’s traveling to the wide and unknown in covered wagons; searching for the land of opportunity. Upon returning home and crossing state lines, I was struck by how beautiful Minnesota is with its greenery and many lakes. We truly have a unique and special place to call home and this can still be considered our land of opportunity and new beginnings. In this issue we give you a sneak peek into an interior design project by Katie Bassett Interiors. Katie shares her style and love of design, plus discusses incorporating the needs and wants of her clients, all while keeping it fun. The team spoke with Rick Rasmussen of Rasmussen Cleaning on the importance of clean air, and tips on how often to clean ducts and carpeting in order to keep homes dust and germ free. We visited with Jim Grenander, owner of Keljik’s Oriental rugs in Minneapolis, and learned about the history of their 120 year-old company, how to choose the perfect rug and keep it in tip-top shape from one generation to another.

California, beach homes in Florida, and ocean-front homes in Croatia and Mexico. “We work on projects anywhere, and from the build to the interior,” says Katie. “We try to help create a lifestyle and avoid outlandish home designs that people can get tired of.” Of course, she says, she might do a fun blue tile in a bathroom, but nothing that is going to date the house. “It’s going to be classic and timeless,” says Katie. “What I like to do is have a lot of classic things, but also add a little touch of whimsy or a little touch of fun.” There are many interior designers out there, and it’s important to find the one right for your personality, style, and home. When hiring an interior designer, Katie suggests first looking at their website to see if you like the work they do. Then find out if they have time available, and if so, what their timeline would be. Ask how they bill, so everything is transparent with no surprises. Finally, meet with the person to make sure you have the right rapport. A contract is also important in order to define expectations. “When we’re hired, it’s an honor, because we know they’re trusting us with their hard-earned money,” says Katie. “What I love most about the clients I work with is the adventure each client takes me on. I get to help them create a part of their new life. KELJIK’S KEEPS TRADITION ALIVE
RUGS HAVE LONG REPRESENTED A WORLDWIDE TRADITION AND HISTORY. Hand woven, flat woven, pile woven, and using various materials such as silk, wool, and cotton, these heavy textiles can be utilitarian or symbolic carrying popularity since the Middle Ages. China, India, Pakistan, and other Persian countries have continued to provide timeless works of rug art to collectors all over the world. Keljik Oriental Rugs of Minnesota is part of that precious past. Over 120 years have passed since Bedros Keljik opened the doors in 1899 to service the families living on Summit Avenue in St. Paul. Today, grandson Mark Keljik remains part of operations, but transferred ownership in 2016 to longtime family friend, Jim Grenander. A former neighbor, Jim has known the Keljik family since he was just seven years old; working on and off for Mark at Keljik’s throughout high school and college until finally becoming full-time in 1995. Jim describes himself as “a people person” and after a short career as a computer programmer at a large corporation, he realized his love for retail was drawing him back to the small, family owned business. The transition was a natural fit. Today, Keljik’s calls 43rd and Bryant home and Jim attributes the long-term success of the business to remaining small, outstanding customer service, and filling a real niche. Jim comments, “Some people think of us as carpet cleaning, but it is cleaning oriental rugs, and we are very specialized.” Keljik’s remains full service and carries a wide variety and selection of new, pre-owned,

and collectible rugs ranging in size and price. Jim mentions they “have one of the better selections of older or antique rugs” which can be aged at 75-120 years old, while newer rugs are usually only 30 years old. Their rug selection originates from different countries all over the world, some from estate sales, and a few from rug dealers, but all are sourced carefully based upon material, design, craftmanship, and quality. Since the investment in a rug can be a large one, Jim doesn’t believe in “high pressure sales and likes to educate buyers.” Shopping in person to see and feel the quality can bring the best results. The most unique and valuable rug Jim has ever laid eyes on is a 4 x 6 Keshan made of silk, which incorporates metallic threads and an animal motif. He says it most likely took two people close to two years or more to finish its construction, and mentions he might never see another likeness in his lifetime. Aside from rare finds, Jim recommends taking some additional things into consideration before making a purchase. First and foremost, “Buy something you like” and not necessarily for an investment. The rug market can frequently fluctuate up and down, so it’s best to invest in a piece you love. It is also good to know the largest and smallest rug dimensions that would fit in the room you are looking to decorate. Determine if you want a formal or casual look, the color palette, lighting options, and the color and texture of the floor. These factors can all play a role in the decision-making process. If the rug will live in a dining room, it is important to make sure the rug is large enough for chairs to be pulled away from the table while still remaining on the rug. If you have already invested in rugs for your home, Keljik’s can assist with the upkeep and offers cleaning, washing, deodorizing, repairs, re-fringing, serging and hand edging. Reweaving, re-tufting, and color touch ups can also be accommodated. If you are looking to

appraise or sell, the knowledgeable Keljik staff can help, but maintaining the rug after purchase is key to protecting its value. Jim suggests cleaning once a year if the rug is located in a high traffic area and cleaning low traffic pieces at least every 3-5 years. Keljik’s prides themselves on customer service and honesty. Jim stresses, “if it’s not worth cleaning, we tell people.” He also mentions that a lot of the rug purchasing and cleaning process comes down to trust, and after 120 years - Keljik’s has earned it. MATHNASIUM IS CHANGING LIVES THROUGH MATH
24
Minneapolis Lakes | October 2020
ARTICLE KASSANDRA MIRANOWSKI PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED BY MATHNASIUM
Building for the Future EDUCATION IS IN FLUX AND ACADEMIA IS ADAPTING DAILY. One thing parents can consider during the Coronavirus Pandemic, is supplemental education. Whether on site in the center or via virtual distance learning, Mathnasium continues to help children reach their full potential and become confident with math. Bobby Tarnowski, owner of several Mathnasium locations throughout the Twin Cities including Minneapolis, St. Louis Park, Edina, Andover, Lakeville and Savage, believes that when kids are confident in math they feel empowered in life. As more careers are requiring math skills, Bobby says that “Math is an investment in the future.” With less than 40% of today’s kids graduating high school with a proficient score in math; Bobby and his teams want to be a part of raising that number. Currently, Mathnasium offers in-person and online learning for students of all ages and math levels ranging from grade school to high school. Compared to a typical classroom that might have up to forty students being taught by one teacher, Mathnasium instructors are working individually with each student, making sure the building blocks are in place before moving to another lesson. Mathnasium believes, “Any child has potential to be successful with math; it’s simply a matter of teaching it in a way that makes sense.” Each Mathnasium program, whether virtual or in-person, is customized to the individual student. Instructors start with an assessment tool to see which areas the student is struggling with and to make sure that their sessions focus on where help is needed most. Bobby says, “one great benefit of joining Mathnasium is that your child is around other students. Sometimes children may be feeling embarrassed or anxious about needing help, and to be around other kids just like them creates a more positive learning environment, and helps them to be more successful.” Bobby points out that a child’s attitude about math is generally one of the first signs that they are really struggling and may need extra help. Parents may hear their child state that they “hate math” or “math is boring” – even that they dislike their teacher, when the underlying issue is that they are not completely grasping the subject or not being challenged enough. Many parents have seen their kids change quickly and form CONTINUED >

a positive attitude thanks to Mathnasium instructors. Joseph M., a current client of Mathnasium is thrilled about his daughter’s progress saying, “My daughter has been in Mathnasium for 4 months and what a difference it has made in her confidence about math. She was afraid to make mistakes and seemed uncertain of answers to problems. She loves to do math now and asks me to quiz her... I’m beyond happy about our experience.” Online learning sessions have recently gained more popularity allowing children to get the education they need in a safe and convenient setting. Online sessions are virtually identical to the in-center learning sessions, and use live video chat in addition to a virtual white board that the teacher and student can simultaneously use to solve problems. If your child prefers in-person learning, Mathnasium is ensuring each student’s safety and is abiding by all protocols that are currently regulated nationwide. Due to Covid-19, each location is operating at 50% capacity and all seating is socially distanced at 6 ft apart. Stations are frequently sanitized and facemasks are required by all. Bobby points out that a lot of teaching is done by a memorization process but, “Mathnasium’s goal is to teach the student why this process works and is being done in the first place, along with the proper way to complete math problems so that they will understand and remember these techniques forever.” Part of the Mathnasium Method also includes using different instructors for the student’s session. The variety of instructors has proven very affective for students. All Mathnasium staff is hired on qualifications that they are proficient in math through Algebra and most high school math curriculum. Most importantly, they must be great with kids with the ability to inspire and lift kids up to help give them the attitude to believe in themselves which in turn will help them to succeed. Instructors have two months of supervised training with the center Directors along with continuous education and training through the first 6 months to ensure that Mathnasium students are receiving the very best math education possible. Mathnasium wants families to have flexible options. Although a parent, relative or guardian may be good at math, that doesn’t necessarily mean one can teach it effectively. Juggling busy schedules can also cause added stress. For as little as a few hundred dollars per month, Mathnasium instructors can take the task over, teach with patience, allow for a more flexible family schedule, and give quality family time back. Financing options are available if needed. Visit https://www.mathnasium.com/ to learn more about the Mathnasium Method and enroll your child today. CityLifestyle.com/MinneapolisLakes

In order to do this, it’s important to ensure that air ducts and carpets are cleaned on a regular basis. After all, breathing in air that’s full of dust, mold, fungus, and other allergens or walking on carpets that are saturated with dirt and germs can have a significantly negative impact on our health. Rick Rasmussen, the owner of Rasmussen Cleaning Service, and his team can help remove these pollutants from your home. With 37 years of experience in the business, he has the knowledge to keep your ducts and carpets clean, and to do it in the best way possible. For example, not all air duct cleaning is performed in the same way. “We use the rotary brush first and then the air whip, so you’re basically getting two cleanings,” says Rasmussen. “We’re also the only company that gives the Four-Year Clean Guarantee.” Basically, every four years after a cleaning, customers will get an email or phone call reminding them that it’s time for an inspection. Someone from Rasmussen Cleaning will then come out and look over the duct system, and if it’s contaminated by more than 35%, they will clean it again at no cost. “We try to build relationships with our customers,” says Rasmussen. Since Rasmussen Cleaning uses both techniques to clean your duct work, it will only need to be done every six to nine years. Many other companies, he says, only use the air whip; in that case, the ducts will need to be cleaned every two to three years. After a duct work cleaning, the most common response he gets from customers is, “I can’t believe how dirty this was!” CONTINUED >

the ducts are. The only thing customers need to do beforehand is to move things away from the vents. For carpet cleaning, the time it takes can vary, depending on how many rooms are being cleaned and how dirty the carpeting is. Five rooms may take about an hour and a half. Before the team arrives, customers just need to clear the floor of small items such as end tables, plants, lamps, and chairs. “We’ll move all the big stuff,” says Rasmussen. “Basically, what we do is we move it out, clean underneath it, and then carefully move it back. We put these little protector blocks underneath the legs of the furniture, so it doesn’t bleed onto the carpet.” The cleaning products, he says, are safe for your entire family and pets. “All the products that we use not only have to be registered with the EPA [Environmental Protection Agency], but they have to be rated a ‘0’ for toxicity,” he says.” For the most part, they all are ‘green’ products.” Rasmussen understands that families are very concerned about safety, especially these days. “COVID has been very challenging,” he says. “People are afraid of having companies come in their homes.” This is why, he stresses, Rasmussen Cleaning goes above and beyond what is required. He and his staff not only wear masks, but also put on rubber gloves and wear booties over their shoes. In

addition, the team wipes down any area in the home that they may have touched. For this, they use another green product called Pure Green 24, an antimicrobial that kills everything, he says, including the COVID-19 virus. Rasmussen is also focused on expanding their cleaning services. “We’re looking into products right now where we can literally fog your house so it will kill everything on any type of surface,” he says.

A Place to Thrive
When Rasmussen graduated from college many years ago and started working as a division manager for a cleaning service, he had no idea he would end up opening his own cleaning business and making it a career. “That’s how I got into it,” he says. “I never would have dreamed of getting into this field.” After all these years, he still enjoys working with his staff and meeting people.
