For art and nature enthusiasts, Cheekwood Estate & Gardens is a must-visit. The 55-acre, flower-filled estate was originally the home of Leslie and Mabel Cheek. It was converted into a museum of art and botanical garden in 1960. Since that time, Cheekwood has housed numerous world-class art exhibits – many of which have been located throughout the gardens. One of the most popular exhibits is Chihuly at Cheekwood, which will return in April. Chihuly at Cheekwood will feature large-scale Chihuly glass sculptures within the gardens and a monumental sculpture in the Frist Learning Center Great Hall.

Cheekwood also offers a fun-filled Storybook Trail exhibit featuring pages from “The Little Engine that Could” book and a trail that leads to the gardens’ popular “TRAINS!” exhibit that children of all ages adore. But perhaps the most enchanting aspect of Cheekwood is its natural beauty. With its 150,000 blooming bulbs in the springtime, it definitely is a sight to behold. THE KNOWLES FAMILY, OLD TOWN MARKET SHAWN AND SHARON KNOWLES OPENED OLD TOWN MARKET IN DOUBLE OAK THIS PAST YEAR, BUT THE BUTCHER SHOP HAS BEEN A FIXTURE IN THE COMMUNITY FOR MANY YEARS. “Old Town Market was established in May 1977 by Bob Knowles and Dickie Grant,” Sharon says. Back then, the business was located in Lewisville, where it remained for 42 years.

“Shawn worked after school cleaning and sweeping the floors. Over the years, working with Bob and Dickie, Shawn learned the true artistry of butchering and acquired his hard working skills and knowledge of the meat business,” Sharon says.

In 2009, Shawn and Sharon purchased the business, and this past July, relocated it to its new site on Chinn Chapel Road. Old Town Market employs four full-time butchers, including Shawn, who was awarded “Best Butcher” for the North Texas Region in 2016 by the Texas Beef Council.

Though she isn’t a butcher, Sharon helps run the business with her husband. Customers appreciate the care and quality put into every cut of meat offered at their market.

“Butchering is a lost art,” Sharon says. “A majority of the grocery/big box stores do not know how to break down the carcass of an animal.”

She says Old Town Market’s traditional style of cutting and quality of meats set it apart from other stores. In addition to prime cuts of meat, Old Town Market sells more than 20 varieties of sausage and even will prepare custom sausages for those who bring in their own seasonings.

Justin Warnack and his wife Casey of Denton began Denovo Candle Co. in 2017 after making candles as gifts for family and friends the previous Christmas.

“What started as a unique gift idea transitioned into a business idea after we received positive feedback,” Justin says.

Justin is no stranger to candle making. “My father had a candle shop in Old Town Lewisville growing up, and I spent the majority of my weekends and summers making and selling candles alongside my family,” he says. “After starting Denovo, we now are teaching our kids not only how to make the candles, but also the financial side of the business. We are appreciative for the opportunity to teach them the craft and to have them involved in building a business from the ground up.”

The couple sell their products online and at many local craft shows. “We also collaborate with other businesses to develop their own unique private label candle lines. Each candle is hand-poured with 100% soy wax and premium fragrance oils to maximize their scent. Denovo also offers melts, which can be used as alternatives to candles in areas where an open flame is not desirable, Justin says.

Each Denovo candle is poured, cooled, cured and topped with the company’s signature wooden lid. The process takes time, but attention to detail is part of the artistry of candle making, Justin says.

“The patience it takes to create a candle is something that seems to get overlooked sometimes by makers themselves,” he says. “From testing to pouring and finally the curing process, patience is required to make a good candle.”

RUSTICO WOOD FIRED GRILL & WINE BAR QUIETLY OPENED ITS DOORS THIS PAST FALL TO A RESOUNDING RESPONSE FROM THE COMMUNITY. Since that time, Rustico has become a premier upscale dining venue in Flower Mound.

Rustico’s style strikes a balance of rustic elegance and contemporary, industrial charm. Alan Mann and Marty Bryan, co-own the restaurant.

“We felt in Flower Mound the one thing that was missing was a nice, upscale restaurant,” Marty says. So he and Alan set out to create an intimate space largely focused on adult patrons seeking a fine-dining experience.

“We really did a good job of creating a nice, cozy, intimate space,” Marty says. Cozy, yes.

Boring, no. Rustico boasts musical playlists to please all diners, but at a level that allows individuals to still hold conversations.

“It’s a warm, intimate, cozy environment with a lively atmosphere,” Marty says.

Rustico’s menu is as thoughtful as its environment. The restaurant is committed to serving only the highest quality food. All of the meats have zero antibiotics, are hormone-free, all natural and have been humanely raised. Rustico partners with 44 farms and ranches to meet this high standard. In addition, all of the restaurant’s produce is organic, and Rustico has a wide variety of gluten-free and allergy-friendly options.

“We spare no expense on the food,” says Marty. However, he says he and Alan were extremely intentional when setting the prices.

“It’s moderate vs. expensive,” he says.

“For the quality of the food and the portions, the price point is fantastic,” Alan says.

In addition to Rustico’s top-notch menu, the restaurant offers an impressive wine, beer and cocktail list.

“We have 57 wines available,” Alan says. He and Marty say they researched best-selling wines and have included those which have broad appeal.

“We want to put on the menu what customers really want,” Marty says.

Unlike many other wine bars, Rustico offers high end wines by the glass, as well, so customers have the flexibility to try fine wines without committing to a $100 bottle.

Rustico hosts happy hours from 4-6 p.m. each day, with additional happy hours from 10 p.m.-midnight on Fridays and Saturdays. The late happy hours offer locals a more elegant option for evening cocktails, Marty says. All menu items, except for entrees are available during the late happy hours.

Rustico is open 4-10 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday; 4 p.m.-midnight on Friday; 3 p.m.-midnight on Saturday; 3-9 p.m. on Sunday; and closed Mondays. It is located at 3701 Justin Road.

I n st r u ct i o n s 01 Cut one-inch circle of orange peel.

02 Place sugar cube in lowball glass and saturate with bitters.

03 Muddle sugar cube and then add 1 1/2 oz of bourbon.

04 Add ice and stir well.

05 Using a match or lighter warm orange peel, then squeeze while holding over glass.

Wipe peel on rim of glass and drop in.
