LITSHOP NONPROFIT WILL BE WAITING TO (HOPEFULLY) CONDUCT SUMMER PROGRAMS ARTICLE JULIE BROWN PATTON | PHOTOGRAPHY COURTESY OF LITSHOP
WHEN ST. LOUIS AREA SCHOOLS HAD TO CLOSE IN MARCH DUE TO THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC, THE FOUNDER OF A YOUNG, HOME-BASED STARTUP TO BENEFIT ADOLESCENT GIRLS ALSO HAD TO PAUSE THE GROUP’S UNIQUE, AFTERSCHOOL PROGRAMMING. Kelli Best-Oliver, founder and executive director of the nonprofit LitShop, launched the skills-building program during February 2019 to provide a time and space for girls ages 10-14 to try carpentry, metal working, print making, fiber arts and architecture so they could experience what working in trades could be like. As a former St. Louis Public School educator and reading specialist, Kelli says she worries about the pathogen’s negative effects on elongating the traditional ‘summer learning loss’ phenomenon that many students face. “As soon as we come out the other side of this coronavirus situation and can conduct classes again socially, we’ll be ready to welcome girls with open arms and lots of ideas about how to create their own projects with purpose for their communities. They’ll surely be more than eager to do something hands-on,” she says. One possible way to contribute to the LitShop initiative is to donate extra tools perhaps found as homebound people clean and clear out their belongings during the extra time on their hands. Once it’s safe for people to exchange items, Kelli says she gladly would accept the extra items. LitShop provides programming that pairs literacy with building, all while exploring creativity and enabling girls to connect with other girls. “Our sessions and the type of projects we do foster leadership and confidence that our girls can use through adolescence and early adulthood,” says Kelli, who’s passionate about literacy and equity in urban education, and believes all students are capable and deserving of rich literate lives. Her work at LitShop allows her to help girls create their own means of construction and direct their own hands-on learning. CONTINUED >

GIVING BACK (CONTINUED)
By working with other entities, such as Girl Scout troops, Missouri Women in Trades, Thomas Dunn Learning Center, Hawthorn Leadership School for Girls and Women in Architecture, the organization taps into the skills of carpenters, metalworkers, woodworkers, printmakers, fiber artists, architects, or any other folks who love to make and build. LitShop needs volunteers in workshops, maker mentors, data entry, marketing, events, fundraising and committee assistance. “Building and making is at the heart of what LitShop does. Giving girls real tools, materials and guidance through the design process helps them develop an entrepreneurial and DIY mindset,” says Kelli. “LitShop gives girls what they need to solve problems in their own lives and their communities, using their own brilliance and ingenuity.” She believes literacy skills are critical to girls’ academic and personal development. Students who don’t read proficiently are four times more likely to drop out of high school than their proficient peers, she says. Literacy skills are critical to informed decision-making, personal empowerment, and active participation in global and local socioeconomic communities, she adds. “In short, literacy empowers girls and enriches their lives. We want our girls to be proficient readers and writers, but more importantly, we want them to be lifelong readers who have rich, literate lives,” says Kelli. 20

IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A PERFECT DAY EXCURSION, THEN PLAN TO VISIT WARM SPRINGS RANCH. Warm Springs Ranch is the beautiful, 300-acre home of AnheuserBusch’s majestic Budweiser Clydesdales, located half-way between St. Louis and Kansas City, in Boonville, MO. This picturesque ranch is the only breeding facility nationwide for those hitch-perfect Clydesdales, and this year, Warm Springs Ranch is expecting 20 new foals between now and the end of December, so you’ll get a chance to see those little ones arriving all year long. Mark Boese, Warm Springs Ranch supervisor and herd manager, says whether you choose to do the General tour, complete with a tour of the facilities, a photo op with a Clydesdale, and an ice-cold Budweiser before you go, or if you choose the VIP Experience, complete with a ride out to the pasture to get a glimpse of the mares and foals up close, you can’t go wrong. 26

ARTICLE KARA SAVIO
AS THE LEGENDARY ELLA FITZGERALD ONCE SANG, “INTO EACH LIFE, SOME RAIN MUST FALL.” And even though we can’t control how much it rains, we can make a decision – let ourselves get soaked, or break out the umbrella. The rain, of course, is COVID-19...the pandemic that’s threatening millions of lives and shaking the world’s confidence. Countries are on lockdown, schools closed, events canceled, factories shut down, and millions told to work from home. But there is a silver lining. Besides the dramatic changes and economic sacrifices to save lives, this crisis has also led to deep human friendships, and incredible acts of heroism, and sacrifice for one another. Kim McBride is an RN at Innovare Health and just one of the millions on the frontlines. And, as if that stress is not enough, on days off she delivers medications to those who can’t get out. McBride says, “It’s a God-given calling in my nature to help people whenever I can.” Fourth-grade teacher P. J. Elam Halter has her Mason ACL Elementary students writing thank you letters to all first responders. “I want it to be a fun way to teach the kids to appreciate the sacrifices so many are making,” says Halter. West County resident Laurie Contrera is just one of the many caring individuals placing teddy bears in windows so young kids can hunt them on walks and bike rides. Sheri Aven started out taking meals to her daughter

Stephanie at St. Luke’s Hospital. That single gesture has now turned into goodie-filled baskets for all the nurses. Aven says, “I’m just one person delivering to one floor of nurses, but my hope is to start a ripple effect encouraging others to do the same.” Shawn Rimerman of ComForCare Home Care delivers free care packages to seniors and others. “We ask recipients to pledge a donation to STLGives.org to pay it forward,” Rimerman says. Disappointed due to her canceled birthday slumber party, Sarah Chudd’s 9-year-old instead enjoyed a 29 car parade with balloons and signs, thanks to amazing friends and neighbors. Chudd said, “Molly says it was her best birthday ever.”
“ We w a n t e d t o f ind a way to boost morale and lighten spirits during these diff icult t i m e s .”
Sarah Southards is a Doula supporting women trying to conceive. No longer able to go into hospitals, she now sews masks. “My hope is to help keep them safe while reminding them they’re appreciated and cared for,” Southards says. She’s already donated 200, with new requests daily. RN Natalie Biagi, formerly from St. Louis, now works COVID-19 crisis assignments out west but has not forgotten her hometown. She teamed up with her cousin Bailey Shafer, Crispy Edge’s Jesse Stuart, and businessman Jack Sheehan to start a GoFundMe campaign supporting shuttered restaurants and feeding healthcare workers here. Biagi says, “We wanted to find a way to boost morale and lighten spirits during these difficult times.” In four weeks they’ve raised $10,500.00. The St. Louis Community Foundation launched a new COVID-19 Regional Response Fund directing philanthropic resources to local people and institutions most affected. Firefighter Charlie Metzner’s charity, St Louis Hero Network, is feeding police, firefighters, and healthcare workers. “Company donations have enabled us to support those same restaurants that helped support our fallen hero’s last fall,” says Metzner. There’s no doubt when the dust settles, our lives will be changed in some ways forever. Yet, this crisis has given us a sense of purpose and the instinct to demonstrate love, kindness, and solidarity. That, we should be proud of. We can take comfort in knowing our “new normal” will perhaps be a kinder, gentler and more thoughtful world.

SELF-ISOLATING WAS NECESSARY FROM A PUBLIC AND PERSONAL HEALTH STANDPOINT DURING THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC, HOWEVER, THAT STEP PUT A DENT IN MANY OF THE WAYS THAT PEOPLE TYPICALLY GATHER TO SUPPORT ONE ANOTHER EMOTIONALLY. Photo by Erin Elizabeth 1. Jessica Phillips, certified exercise coach and owner of The Exercise Coach facilities in Clayton, Town and Country and Webster Groves, recommends “The Secret” by Rhonda Byrne. It’s a self-help book regarding the power of positive thinking. The book suggests the notion that “like attracts the like,” which means if one emits positive energy, it will be very beneficial because that will attract positive things to that person. 2. Angela Carter, Mary Tuttle’s Floral and Gifts’ manager, suggests “Simple Acts of Kindness,” by Adams Media. The book outlines ways to practice kindness every day with easy, accessible activities that range from helping elderly to supporting animal welfare or protecting the local environment. It’s available in their store to buy for gift-giving. 3. Fonda Hereford, AssuredPartners senior vice president, proposes the book “Ahab’s Wife or, The Star-Gazer” by Sena Jeter Naslund. The book details main character Una’s life as she undertakes adventures and strife, and eventually struggles with husbands who are driven mad by the unconquerable force of mother nature.

help pick up the pieces.” In a statement on March 26, YouthBridge announced the creation of the Nonprofit Recovery and Resilience Fund to provide recovery assistance and support the operational and capacity needs of St. Louis nonprofits, particularly those serving children and families. “While other similar funds have been established to help address their immediate needs, we are focused on the long-lasting effects that social distancing, program disruption, canceled fundraisers, donor hardships and other issues will have on their sustainability,” says Michael. The Fund also will help develop ongoing risk assessment and disaster preparedness training, drawing on the hard lessons many nonprofits are learning today. “To say this is an unprecedented, uncertain time would be an understatement,” he says. “This is a worst case scenario for many of our nonprofits, with ever-changing dynamics. Tomorrow’s landscape looks different than today’s and the next few months are a complete mystery. We are designing a nimble fund that will evolve – and we hope, grow – along with the needs of nonprofits.” To make a contribution to the Nonprofit Recovery reach
