on certain days. For my eight-year-old son, Ethan, it is very refreshing and brings a smile to his face to see his friends on Zoom as we continue to social distance. We also have a family meeting one night per week. It allows us to discuss issues, business, schoolwork or any other challenges that may arise in various areas of our lives and a plan to tackle them head on. At the end of the meeting, each person shares one thing that they really enjoyed about the current week; always ending on a positive note with everyone smiling. Allow everyone to express themselves. This will particularly be important with digital learning. Let's face it, we've never been through anything like this prior to 2020. Attitude, perseverance and communications are key, including taking the temperature of every person within your immediate family.

MARY MCGEHEE AND THE SMYRNA COMMUNITY DANCERS
LOCAL LIMELIGHT Q&A WITH MARY MCGEHEE OF SMYRNA DANCERS TELL US ABOUT THE CLIENTS YOU SERVE. We are most proud of being a community-based program operating in conjunction with the City of Smyrna Parks and Recreation. We’ve had the privilege of working with several thousand students over the past 20 years. This type of outreach has been possible by making every effort to be the affordable alternative for dance instruction in the Smyrna/Vinings area and meeting the needs of all children, youth and adults. 10
Smyrna Vinings Lifestyle | September 2020
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START SMYRNA DANCERS? It all came together based on my background and my passion [for dance]. My education and early training were in dance and the early part of my career was in business. Smyrna Dancers was the small business I seemed destined to create. HOW DID YOU DEVELOP YOUR DANCE SKILLS? My undergraduate training at the acclaimed Birmingham Southern Dance Program, my masters in Fine Arts at the University of North Carolina Greensboro, my post-graduate training while living in New York City, along with serving as the dance director for VISTA and [serving in] the domestic Peace Corps dance program for the U.S. Virgin Islands, all provided a wonderful background of dance and choreography. WHAT INSPIRES YOUR WORK AND WHAT SETS YOU APART FROM EVERYONE ELSE? After 20 years, I continue to be inspired every time I am inside the studio watching the intense joy of all our students. My inspiration also comes from interaction with the dance parents. Our philosophy is that dance, movement and teamwork are essential learning skills for young children; skills that will help them throughout their lives with poise, confidence, discipline and social interaction. WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR BIGGEST CHALLENGE SINCE COVID-19? Covid-19 has upended all of our lives and businesses. We are constantly exploring the challenge of continuing to work with our students in a safe and healthy environment. Online instruction, limited class size, outdoor instruction are a few of the options under review. We will always err on the side of the safety for our dancers, parents and staff. We approach this unprecedented challenge as an opportunity to experiment with creative solutions. DESCRIBE YOUR TYPICAL WORK DAY. Because of the uniqueness of each child, no two days are ever the same. I have to say that each day is better because of our great staff headed by Julie Segal, director of Operations and Productions and Anne Marie Tapp, lead instructor, who started with us as a young student and Jodi Mills CPRP, senior recreation coordinator who provides such wonderful support in coordination with the city [of Smyrna]. WHICH SMALL BUSINESSES ARE YOU INSPIRED BY? My father founded two very successful small businesses in my hometown of Auburn, AL. His entrepreneurial leadership and customer service qualities are some of my most treasured life lessons and still provide a wonderful how-to guide on business success and how to treat your customers. WHAT’S YOUR BEST ADVICE FOR SOMEONE WHO WANTS TO START THEIR OWN CREATIVE BUSINESS? Do it for the love of the everyday activities that it involves. Do it for the non-material rewards as well as the monetary ones and be prepared to work 24/7/365. WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR THE FUTURE? We look to continue the growth of our competitive dance teams and solo performers who have earned high recognition for their talent and hard work. Even after 20 years, my primary goal remains the same as it was when we began to bring joy and learning to as many children as possible.

TOP 10 THINGS TO KNOW FOR A HEALTHY SMILE 10. KEEP IT SIMPLE. Expensive dental products may help, but proper hygiene techniques and habits are paramount!
9. FOOD CHOICES ARE CRITICAL. Hard or sticky sugary foods are the most common contributors to tooth decay.
8. BIOLOGY MATTERS. Just like any other part of the human body, some of us are genetically more prone to issues like cavities and gum disease.
7. SECRET’S OUT! Plaque is really a mixture of germs, old sugary foods and acidic germ waste. Yep, germ poo is destroying teeth every day.
6. FLOSS FIRST (AND NOT THE DANCE!). Nothing can adequately replace actually getting the string between our teeth. If we floss first, we have a better chance to be more effective in our routine.
5. CONSISTENCY IS KEY. Invest 2 minutes every morning and 2 minutes before bed.
4. PREVENTION IS LESS EXPENSIVE. Like most things in life, allowing for problems to persist makes it harder to restore and repair. It’s true for home repair, relationships, education and….TEETH!
3. ACCESS AND ANGLES. When brushing your teeth or your children’s teeth, we must create better access by moving our lips and cheeks out of way. Then gently brush with the bristles angled along the gum line. This adjustment in technique can be a real smile saver.
2. YES, PROFESSIONAL DENTAL VISITS ARE NECESSARY. Waiting until something hurts usually ends up being a bigger problem. If you don’t trust your dental team, it’s ok to get second opinions.
1. IT’S COMPLICATED. Fluoride itself is not harmful but if used incorrectly, it could possibly relate to health problems. When used properly, in can be a great benefit for your teeth. Please supervise brushing to ensure correct spitting and amount of toothpaste through elementary grade years.
BONUS: WHITER IS NOT BETTER. Kids are increasingly dissatisfied with their natural teeth color and are asking for bleaching products. This is related to trends in adult dentistry and the manufactured images they see on mass media. Teeth color has joined weight, height, and hair in a long list of body image insecurities.

VITAMIN A IS ESSENTIAL TO PROTECTING THE CORNEAS OF OUR EYES. By taking care of your corneas, you can extend the health of your eyesight and reduce vision loss with age. An easy way to remember what to eat for healthy eyes is to look for orange foods. Carrots, sweet potatoes, pumpkin, and butternut squash are all high in vitamin A.

Did you know that vitamin A is also imperative for skin health? So while you’re caring for your corneas, you’re also boosting your outer glow. If you want to kick it up a notch, be intentional about eating plenty of foods with omega-3 fatty acids to reduce acne and inflammation and help your skin produce its own collagen. For your healthy fats, go for flax seed, walnuts, chia seeds, and fish.

For soft, flowing tresses, make sure you’re getting an equal amount of B vitamins in your diet. We naturally get plenty of B-6 because it’s in most grains, but it’s easier to end up with a biotin or B-12 deficiency if you don’t pay attention. Focus on foods like salmon, eggs, spinach, and broccoli for a healthy balance of B vitamins for your hair.

AN SUV FOR THE BIG HAUL THE 2020 SUBARU ASCENT EQUALS TRUE FAMILY VERSATILITY
ARTICLE GEORGE VALENTINO | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED 28
Smyrna Vinings Lifestyle | September 2020
GOT A FEW KIDS? Pets too? How about a boat or a camper? Do you like the outdoors? If you said yes to any or all of these questions, then the 2020 Subaru Ascent is your go-to SUV. The Ascent is the largest Subaru ever and features third-row seating, so there’s plenty of room for your entire crew. Family road trips and getaways have never been easier. With eight-person seating and 17.8 cubic feet of all-seats-up cargo volume, there’s even space for a dog crate and a few suitcases. With the second and third rows of seats folded, there’s 86.5 cubic feet of cargo volume, providing ample room for that dog crate, plus maybe even some camping gear and a few more suitcases. Subaru brings several beneficial features to this vehicle, including standard symmetrical all-wheel drive, with up to 27 miles per gallon; 8.7 inches of ground clearance; 5,000-pound towing capacity; high-strength steel body structure, for a quiet ride; built-to-last engineering and manufacturing; and X-MODE®. X-MODE is a unique Subaru feature that optimizes the symmetrical all-wheel drive system, for maximum traction on slippery surfaces. X-MODE also incorporates hill descent control, for stability and confidence when descending more difficult grades. As if that weren’t enough, the 2020 Ascent is also equipped with standard EyeSight® Driver Assist Technology: an extra set of eyes on the road, adding confidence in safety for every trip.

FOOD & WINE SOBAR FOUNDER BETH HARBINSON CREATES AN ASIAN INSPIRED MOCKTAIL
the charmer THIS BLEND IS CONSIDERED THE PERFECT BALANCE OF FIVE FLAVORS INSPIRED BY ASIAN COOKING: SWEET, SOUR, BITTER, SALTY AND SPICY CREATED WITH CINNAMON, CLOVES, FENNEL, STAR ANISE, AND SZECHUAN PEPPERCORNS.
INGREDIENTS INGREDIENTS FOR 2 SERVINGS
+ 1 cup of pear juice - We LOVE to make our own in the blender. Just throw in 2 peeled, seeded pears – Asian Pears work best but others will work as well - and pour through a fine sieve OR purchase an organic bottled pear juice with no sugar added.
+ ½ cup fat free yogurt + 1 tbs pure maple syrup + ¼ teaspoon alcohol free vanilla extract or fresh vanilla bean to taste
+ ¼ tsp. cinnamon + ¼ tsp Chinese Five Spice Powder + A squeeze of lemon
DIRECTIONS Place all ingredients in a shaker and shake vigorously or add some ice and whip up a frothier version in your blender. Garnish with a slice of Asian Pear.
