However, there is an underlying challenge to what kind of a home many of us are able to have. In Southern California there is a housing crisis. Depending on where they are in the income and social spectrum, many people cannot afford to buy their first home, can barely afford ever-increasing rental costs, cannot afford to live close to where they work and cannot afford to “move up” when their family grows. There is a shortage of housing due to a lack of new construction and too many people trying to fill up what is available. Thus, the price of a home continues to be increasingly out of reach for far too many. There is also that very embarrassing ugly reality of the homeless. Yes, right here in paradise, thousands of otherwise “regular folks” are living in RV’s, cars, shelters or on the

crosshairs of the moment. As privileged folks (yes, we in communities like the Conejo Valley, Calabasas, Malibu, Camarillo and Simi Valley are privileged), by and large the attitude is “solve it somewhere else. Don’t build a shelter in my town. Don’t build up rather than low rise. Rent control?… Un-American!” I do not have an answer. I’m not an expert—just a lonely voice joining the chorus. Our society must begin to embrace solutions that will likely require some compromise. If not, the American Dream will be out of reach for far too many of our current and next generations.

Emergency Shelter Upward Bound House provides families in crisis with shortterm emergency shelter on the Westside and in South Los Angeles. Throughout their time in shelter, children and their parents are provided with daily grab-and-go breakfasts and hot evening meals, as well as clothing and household items as needed. While in a safe and comfortable living space with their children, parents work with case managers, housing locators and employment specialists to achieve stability and independence for their families. The goal is to help move families into permanent housing and connect them with a vast network of community partners while also continuing to support their growth with aftercare services. Rapid Rehousing Upward Bound House’s Rapid Rehousing program works to help the growing population of families in South Los Angeles who are experiencing homelessness. Using the Housing First model, families are moved into permanent affordable housing as quickly as possible, and assisted with move-in costs, such as security and utility deposits and short-medium term declining rental subsidies, and provided intensive social services while families are in their own homes. These supportive services are designed to enhance each family’s stability and equip them with the skills and resources needed to sustain and thrive in housing and avoid future homelessness. Urban Farm Project Families and community members come together at a beautiful Healthy Living Farm to learn, grow, harvest and eat. Located in Santa Monica, this productive urban farm plays a vital role in reducing food insecurity in the homeless community, encourages community partnership, and acts as an effective tool for teaching practical skills for healthy living. The following are some key components of the urban farm program: + Healthy Living: The farm program is designed to promote healthy eating habits and a healthy lifestyle by teaching families to grow and prepare their own food.

MULHOLLAND BRAND Mulholland Brand understands that customers want products requiring little to no maintenance. To fulfill that need, the company manufactures a wide variety of gates, fencing and railing, all in corrosion-resistant aluminum alloy. To further minimize maintenance requirements and add to their beauty, Mulholland Brand's products are either anodized or powder-coated. Anodizing and powder-coating are similar processes. Each adhere a protective and beautifying finish to aluminum electrostatically, resulting in a much more durable protective surface than paint. Anodizing creates a durable reflective surface to railings, giving them a stainless-steel appearance. Powdercoating provides architects, designers and homeowners with a full spectrum of beautiful color choices in gates and fencing. Mulholland Brand manufactures their products in their own factory, in Canoga Park, in Southern California. Since 1994, they've designed, manufactured and installed thousands of gates in the U.S. and throughout the world. MULHOLLAND BRAND 818-740-5745| MulhollandBrand.com

AmaMagna’s truly extraordinary river cruises include unique itineraries, such as Magna on the Danube, a new 7-night itinerary from Budapest, Hungary to Vilshofen, Germany, available from March through December during its 2020/2021 seasons. Personally curated by Co-Founder and President Rudi Schreiner, this distinctive sailing adventure includes daytime scenic cruising through the Danube Bend, a magnificent stretch with a dramatic turn between rocky hills in Dunakanyar, Hungary. There’s no better way to enjoy the awe-inspiring scenery than from the comfort of one of AmaMagna’s full-balcony suites.

In addition, Magna on the Danube offers both returning AmaWaterways guests and those new to the Danube River an in-depth glimpse into Vienna’s Baroque splendors with an included excursion to the royal Habsburgs’ Schönbrunn Palace and Gardens. Built in the 18th century as an imperial summer residence, this magnificent 1,441-room Baroque palace is one of the most important architectural, cultural and historical monuments in Austria. View the living quarters of the emperors, which still contain their original furnishings, as well as a collection of carriages used by the imperial family and Viennese court. Plus, tour the equally impressive gardens, built around an artesian well from which the palace draws its name (Schönbrunn = “beautiful spring”). This attractive outdoor space encompasses a variety of botanical specimens, sculptures of deities and virtues, a maze, an arboretum and even a small zoo popular with local families.
