We hope this issue can be a keepsake of the positive things that have happened in our community during this time. We hope it can be a break from social media and the news. We hope it's a reminder to continue to support local businesses, and pay attention to all the “Good News” that continues to come from our area. As I write this letter in April, it’s too soon to tell where we will be by the time this issue hits homes. My hope is that things are on their way back to “normal,” but if not, I’m confident this community will continue to thrive together.

Positive Leadership BELLEVUE LEADERS SHARE WORDS OF ENCOURAGEMENT IN LIGHT OF THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC ARTICLE HEIJA NUNN
ON FEBRUARY 29, 2020, WASHINGTON STATE BECAME THE UNITED STATES EPICENTER OF THE COVID19 PANDEMIC. Within hours of the escalating emergency at a local nursing home, school closures were announced, toilet paper shortages reported, and our daily dance with uncertainty began. We still don’t know how long it will take, or if, our habits and routines will return to the way they were. In the earliest days of the response we could only wonder and speculate about how life would change and how we would respond to what is likely to be the crisis of our lifetimes. Yet now that we have been home for awhile, we have learned something important about you, about me, about us. We are amazing on-the-job learners. We are creative, adaptable, efficient, compassionate, ridiculous, petulant, impatient, long-suffering, hilarious, intuitive, lazy, and at the same time, incredibly productive, beings. We are good neighbors, bad singers, new bakers and old arguments. We howl at the moon and coo at new babies. We are teachers and students, givers and takers, and now, even cotton mask makers. We cry at commercials, and then yell at the news, like it’s our job. It is our job. We buy groceries for neighbors, and snap at our parents. We mourn for the lost, and pine for celebrations and moments unrealized. We study and learn, wash up, glove up, love up. And when we venture outside, we long for inside, we step lightly and act cautious, like its our job. We are doing a job. We stuff bears in windows and light the skies blue, we give thanks to the strangers doing jobs we can’t do. We buy flowers from farmers and fight with our kids, and then we zoom into meetings right from our beds. We sing praises for teachers and take pictures of food. Sometimes we TikTok, it depends on our mood. We have a big job, and we must work from home, with a paycheck or no. Each day we clock in and check out, then we clock out and check in. Reverse that the next day, we’ll do it again. We are kindness and madness, generosity and greed. We soar to new heights and then fall to our knees. We are days and nights upside down, outside smile, inside frown. We stay home and stay healthy for the good of our town. Be well and read on for words of encouragement from some local leaders.

As a 3rd-generation resident of the Eastside and your neighbor, I want to express my personal thanks and gratitude to this remarkable community. Lynne Robinson MAYOR OF BELLEVUE "As we navigate these uncharted waters together, and cope with the overwhelming challenges from the novel coronavirus outbreak, I want to provide some positive observations from Bellevue: We are witnessing the strength of the Eastside. Nonprofits and businesses are working together like never before to attend to the needs of all our residents. There is a sense of community and collaboration. Supply drives for our first responders, our hospitals and our non-profits have engaged residents and businesses together for the benefit of the common good. I know how hard this is for the many who are ill, who have families to care for, whose businesses have been compromised or who have lost a loved one. But in the end, we will be a stronger, more cohesive and more resilient community. Please be sure to check the COB website daily for updated information and resources. And feel free to email me at lrobinson@bellevuewa.gov if you are unable to find the help that you need. Stay in and stay safe."
Joe Fain PRESIDENT, BELLEVUE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE "For possibly the first time in history the entire world is living a shared experience - but that experience is very different for each of us. Fear, anger, ambivalence, restlessness; there is no right or wrong way to feel at a time like this, but there are many right ways to act. That’s what our community has done through countless acts from feeding hospital staff and first responders, donating to nonprofits, delivering food to school kids, supporting local businesses, and by looking after one another. We don’t yet know what life will look like on the other side of this or how long it will take to get there. But if we continue to display the level of service and compassion that we’ve shown since this began the Eastside and the world we wake up to will be pretty great place to live."

Arthur Emery BELLEVUE SCHOOL FOUNDATION, BOARD PRESIDENT "From the shores of Lake Washington to the shores of Lake Sammamish, our community's commitment to its members is bar none, particularly in the support of our students. As the President of the Bellevue Schools Foundation, I have been humbled by the incredibly important role we have been asked to fill during this crisis. When our schools closed, we immediately diverted $50,000 of unused program funds to feed our most vulnerable students and support our city's frontline healthcare workers. The outpouring of support from our donors has been immediate, robust, and deeply needed. It is a testament to the values that hold our community together. Whether we are patronizing our local bars and restaurants or donating to our local organizations, our community is throwing its full resources behind each and every one of us. There is nothing more inspiring than the collective action of a driven, successful, and committed group of people. I could not be prouder to be our President this year or prouder to be a member of Bellevue's generous and supportive community. Thank you for your support. Thank you for your generosity. And thank you for your compassion for our most in-need families during this time." CityLifestyle.com/BellevueWA

It’s where you’ve celebrated life, friendship and family moments through food and drink. When COVID-19 had other restaurants closing, the Brazens quickly transformed their restaurant and created a state-of-the-art online ordering platform with incredible takeout options. They also kept their community together by creating Virtual Zoom Happy Hours to connect their regulars and Zoom Catch-ups to keep their staff connected. They’ve partnered with Bellevue Chamber, Bellevue Breakfast Rotary and several prominent local doctors to donate over 800 meals to local hospitals. They also partnered with Kemper Development to donate two meals for each takeout order to Bellevue Lifespring to feed hungry children who are out of school. JUJUBEET CAFÉ A note from the owner It is well into the evening and I am doing a regular inspection round, visiting our three Jujubeet stores and our brand-new production facility. Are the freezers still running properly? Any issues with the plumbing? My heart is sad as I look at these beautiful spaces that used to be humming with activity, cranking out only the healthiest food and beverage. After a severe drop in revenue following the necessary COVID-19 regulations, I had to close Jujubeet entirely and furlough all my employees. I have an amazing team of some 35 people that formed the heart of this company that was founded to make healthy waves in our community. Yet, I am hopeful and optimistic. Hopeful that we will be able to re-assemble our team and re-open Jujubeet – and optimistic that our awesome customers will return in force to give us the support we need to bring Jujubeet back to life and once again make healthy waves. *open for takeout and delivery. The Swap E xc h a n g e BUSINESS IN THE BARTER ECONOMY
ARTICLE MEILI CADY
THERE’S BEEN A BOOM IN BARTERING RECENTLY. For many people, that’s meant digging through the pantry to find something to swap for toilet paper after pandemic-crazed shoppers cleaned out the aisles. For others, community pages on Facebook and Nextdoor are reliable sources for trading items like furniture or kitchen accessories. Then,
there’s
BizX,

based
in
Bellevue.
“We are a digital bartering company that helps advance the oldest tool of bartering — and takes it to the next level,” says owner Bob Bagga.
26
Bellevue Lifestyle | June 2020
That next level goes beyond trading household items to trading entire households. For example, an article in Bloomberg recently described a transaction at the company: A home flipper spent a lot of money buying and remodeling a home in Leavenworth that was listed for $1.2 million. Now, he’s willing to accept part of that payment in “BizX dollars,” which he can use as credit to trade for services with other BizX members — electricians, landscapers, painters — so he can buy and flip other houses. “In the barter economy, you are richer than you think,” says Bagga. “The pandemic has impacted many businesses. Most of these companies have capacity but are tight on cash, and bartering allows them to use what they have to get what they need.” Bartering has long been a common tool among savvy business owners. Bob Bagga, Founder of BizX
“One-third of transactions
among businesses are non-cash exchanges. General Electric, Mercedes, and other major companies all barter.” Now, especially, it may be a necessity for all businesses, big and small, given the current economy. Bagga calls it “the first form of currency,” and he says it’s not going anywhere. “Businesses are and will continue to use bartering as the economy shifts, just as working remotely has become the way of the future.” As most businesses have seen dramatic shifts since the Coronavirus, so has BizX. Since the outbreak began, the company has seen a 30% increase in traffic to their website. “It’s very interesting and encouraging to see the ways that our BizX customers are using our currency during this time. We depend on small to mid-sized businesses, and demand has definitely gone up since the outbreak began. We can now see that businesses are planning for the rebound.” Bagga and his team at BizX plan to be a part of that rebound. “My team has totally stepped up! I am so proud of them, the innovations in the BizX community, and the positive connections we’ve made.” He helped launch a Facebook group and website called Business Saving Business to allow members of the local community to help each other. Bagga says it doesn’t matter if you are a billionaire, a sole proprietor, a Fortune 500 company or a local flower

The Table Less Traveled HOW ONE TRAVEL BUSINESS ADAPTED TO KEEP PEOPLE CONNECTED
I HAD THE PRIVILEGE OF CHATTING WITH ANNIE CHENG, OWNER OF "THE TABLE LESS TRAVELED" TO DISCUSS HOW HER COMPANY HAS WEATHERED THE COVID-19 STORM BY KEEPING CONNECTION WITH ONE ANOTHER THEIR TOP PRIORITY. BL: WHAT IS THE TABLE LESS TRAVELED? AC: The Table Less Traveled is a boutique tour operator that leads small-group trips for the culture and cuisine curious. We introduce travelers to undiscovered, private venues like having dinner in our friends' homes, learning how to cook their grandmothers' recipes, and seeing how different artisan products are grown or made. We currently host travelers in Italy, Peru, Malaysia, and Japan and are expanding destinations every year. BL: WHEN COVID-19 STARTED TO SPREAD AND RESTRICTIONS ON TRAVEL STARTED TO ARISE, WHAT WAS YOUR THOUGHT PROCESS REGARDING YOUR BUSINESS AND HOW IT MAY HAVE TO CHANGE? AC: In February, when travel restrictions started landing In Asia, we decided to postpone our small group tour to Malaysia which was scheduled for March 2020. It was a difficult decision as I was mentally prepared and excited to visit all our friends, meander through beloved markets, eat tropical fruits and delicious food, and explore wildlife in the rainforest. As were our travelers who were disappointed in the delay. Now, we are all grateful we made the decision to postpone until March 2021. In talking with other entrepreneurs and friends in the travel industry, my level of concern increased. One morning, as I headed into the office, a friend called me, panicked about her business and potential layoffs for all her employees. At that time, it dawned on me that as tourism became obsolete, income for our business would stop. Cash flow would stop. All expected profits for the year would stop, or be uncertain at best. Expenses would continue.

What did I want? To be able to continue to employ our team. To support our international friends and partners who were also out of work. To continue providing value. To build community. And to continue staying true to our mission and values. BL: HOW SPECIFICALLY HAVE YOU ADAPTED? AC: We decided to launch live, virtual, interactive cooking classes with our chefs and friends from

around the world. At the same time, across borders, boundaries, and travel restrictions, you can learn from a chef how to make pasta, tiramisu, lomo saltado (Peruvian beef stir fry), and a variety of other traditional dishes. The chefs often also share about their lives, what quarantine is like for them, the significance of the recipes, and history of the region that formed the dish they prepare with us. Participants are encouraged to ask questions and engage - whether it be about if their dough is rising properly, if they need to substitute ingredients because they couldn't find yeast, or introducing their dog running through the background of the Zoom session. Our classes are about genuinely being you, and genuinely connecting with our chefs who are genuinely themselves. BL: WHAT SURPRISING POSITIVES HAVE COME OUT OF THESE VIRTUAL COOKING CLASSES? AC: It was a complete gamble whether we would have any success launching this new product. The most surprising positive impacts have been on the chefs and participants. The warm reception of these classes have allowed us to support others through a challenging time. It's an escape for folks, for an hour or two, to connect, laugh, take a break, and enjoy sharing an experience with new friends. We launched and hosted a little over a week of classes in March. And when we sent contributions to our chefs for the classes they taught, the responses were emotionally overwhelming...

DURING A TIME WHEN MOST OF WHAT WE SEE AND HEAR FROM MEDIA INDUCES ANXIETY, FEAR, AND CONFUSION, A DOSE OF POSITIVITY AND STORIES OF ACTS OF KINDNESS CAN HELP SOOTHE. Truly there is a silver lining that exists when we pay attention, and we are fortunate to be part of community that is willing and able to help, support, and create uplifting new possibilities. Bellevue Lifestyle is proud share some of this local "Good News" with you.
Scissor! Camera! Cut! Jessi Sites, Entrepreneur Jessi Sites, a Medina Mom and small business owner, leads an active online life when she is not working. She says she was inspired to to contribute her skills early in the Stay at Home order, “in that weird time in between being told not to wear masks, and then being told it was a good idea.” Medical grade masks were in short supply, even for frontline response workers, so she fashioned a solution for the average person. She pulled out her oversupply of loud printed, stretchy leggings, and decided to create a mask-making tutorial video that went viral. With her eleven year old son operating the camera, they shot the video in one take, “Honestly, I thought maybe 50 of my friends would watch it,” said Sites. The video ended up with 700k views on Facebook and when Jessi created her new YouTube channel called Life Soup, it attracted another 600k views. Spending time at home has given her both a valuable lesson, “Put a little effort into hair and makeup before you put anything out!” and a reminder to look for silver linings, like the simple pleasure of a scaled down backyard birthday party and time to make homemade cookies. “I hope we don”t lose this,” she said. 34

A Good Neighbor Amazon On every normal school day there are 3,500 Bellevue students who rely on free school breakfast and lunch for nutrition. When schools closed, Bellevue School District and the community had to act quickly to find and provide immediate solutions for kids and families in need of food and essential supplies. Bellevue LifeSpring, is a non-profit that has been working since 1911 to foster stability and self-sufficiency for Bellevue’s children and their families, through programs that provide food, clothing, education and emergency assistance. The organization worked strategically with the School District to provide grocery gift cards and other assistance, but transportation barriers meant access to emergency resources remained difficult for many families. Enter our new Bellevue neighbor, Amazon, who’s commitment to “Right Now Needs” in the communities they serve helped solve the transportation barrier issue. Amazon’s donation and partnership with Bellevue LifeSpring, made it possible for families in isolation, or without transportation, to utilize credits to have eligible grocery, food, health and personal care items delivered directly to their homes. “Amazon has been an incredible partner during this Jennifer Fischer, Bellevue Lifespring

Curb to Table Angela Rozmyn Director of Sustainable Development, Natural and Built Environments LLC Angela Rozmyn knows how to draw a crowd. In addition to her day job, she writes a personal finance blog called TreadLightlyRetireEarly. com and runs an associated 15,000 member women’s personal finance Facebook group. An avowed foodie and community advocate she started the popular new Facebook group called Eastside Restaurant Support. Rozmyn was inspired by a similar group in Seattle to use her expertise to give herself and others a way to support the hard hit local restaurant industry and frontline workers, “We live in a time where its easy to feel helpless, especially if you don’t work in a frontline job. So many people, like me, are still in decent financial situations and want to know how they can help. This group encourages a focus on our local community, and gives people a tangible way to make a difference right now.” The group has grown quickly to over 4,500 members and has become a go to place for restaurant recommendations, menu tips and insider secrets, it has also spawned an interactive map to track restaurants open during the stay at home order. The group saw over 35,000 engagements in its first month, with Angela and moderators encouraging interaction with questions and themes like #TakeoutTuesday and #FrontlineFriday to inspire members to share their own stories about the restaurants they own, work at and support. Angela’s family has diverted their travel budget to take out and will remember this as a time when so many people stepped up to help. “Especially in hard times, it helps to look to those who are doing good. We are all in this together.”

BELLEVUE REAL ESTATE MARKET LUXURY REALTOR MOYA SKILLMAN OF TEAM FOSTER SHARES HER INSIGHT
THE EFFECTS OF COVID-19 CONTINUES TO RESHAPE THE WAY OUR WORLD IS INTERCONNECTED, FROM HOW WE LIVE OUR DAILY LIVES, TO HOW WE CONDUCT BUSINESS. The real estate industry has experienced shifts, and Bellevue Lifestyle asked luxury real estate expert, Moya Skillman, to share potential impacts.
1. REAL ESTATE SERVICES HAVE BEEN DEEMED ESSENTIAL IN WASHINGTON STATE. WHAT HEALTH PRECAUTIONS HAS YOUR TEAM IMPLEMENTED CURRENTLY AND GOING FORWARD? Client safety is our number one priority. Luckily we are “Type A” planners, so we were ahead of the curve in stocking up on supplies. For each showing we wear a mask, gloves, shoe covers and we use sanitizing wipes to clean surfaces. We remind the buyer’s agent to bring gloves etc., and we keep extras on hand in case they forget. We limit only two people in the house at a time. After the showing we wipe the surfaces again and dispose of everything.
