MY CAMARO 1969 CHEVROLET CAMARO Z-28 RS

MY LOVE AFFAIR WITH CARS COMES NATURALLY. My dad is a car buff, and I grew up on the aroma of exhaust and Turtle Wax. When I was 10 years old, I remember seeing what I thought was the perfect looking car! It was a Camaro. So sleek, so powerful looking… Oooh, it was gorgeous! I knew it was the car for me. When I turned 16 and told my dad that I wanted a Camaro. “Well then, you better get a job,” he said. From my first job at 11, removing staples from stacks of paper to be scanned at his office, through the many jobs after that… I worked summers and holidays solely with that Camaro in mind.

At 17, I bought that LeMans Blue 1969 Z-28 RS Camaro! I picked up my best friend Leann for the inaugural ride and have been in love with it ever since.

Now I’m privileged to be able to use it for something good. Each year, Choate Construction hosts Cars & ‘Q, a charity car show and party to support the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a genetic, terminal disease that eventually took the life of my friend Leann, the original inspiration behind our support of CF. Through car buffs uniting, funds have been raised and dedicated to curing CF, resulting in dramatic medical breakthroughs that have drastically changed the landscape of cystic fibrosis.

So this year, mentally and physically exhausted, my husband and I decided to pack it up and meet some friends in Los Cabos, Mexico for the New Year. (The Christmas trees can stay up one more week.)

We have never been to Los Cabos, the flight is direct from ATL and clocks in at only 3.5 hours, a perfect amount of time to grab a nap, a light lunch, and catch a movie. For our stay we booked a room in the Griffin Club at the JW Marriott Los Cabos Beach Resort and Spa seeking an attentive, but laid-back atmosphere where we could relax and recoup.

The hotel arranged a car service to pick us up at the airport, so we grabbed a margarita as they loaded our bags and are off in no time.

PSR Clark has impressed many supervisors with how she pays attention to the radio and listens for pertinent information. PSR Clark has been commended for working well with officers and can often anticipate what is needed. PSR Clark has shown excellent displays of customer service, particularly when she helped console a woman who was grieving and in crisis outside of the police department.

Police Service Representative Lori Rivera Rivera demonstrated her ability to be a team player while assisting - sometimes last minute - with coverage at the front desk. PSR Rivera has excelled in her productivity and quality of work. There have been several occasions when she has completed multiple warrant entries with no errors in one night and completed over 60 GCIC warrant validations in just a few short weeks with little to no assistance and without error. PSR Rivera demonstrated a talent for attention to detail. After being given the task of assisting with warrant validations, she demonstrated excellent skills in time management. Lastly, she did an excellent job researching the status of an inmate and communicated with multiple agencies to ensure we knew where the inmate was located and if the inmate’s warrants should still be valid. Her efforts in this area and detailed documentation of the matter were greatly appreciated and saved countless hours of work time for her supervisors and peers.

Police Service Representative Diane Sanford Police Service Representative Sanford recently worked at the Georgia Law Enforcement Explorer Academy (GLEEA) during the second quarter as an Explorer Advisor.

She played a significant role in the success of the academy, mentoring the explorers and encouraging them to push their boundaries towards growth. She worked well with all of the participants of the academy to ensure its success. PSR Sanford also contributed greatly towards the training of our newest PSR, Natasha Clark, and did an exceptional job helping Natasha prepare for that role. PSR Clark is now on her own and doing an exceptional job. PSR Sanford sets a daily example for us all when it comes to her consistency and willingness to help others without seeking reward or recognition. She has truly demonstrated a number of our core values to include: Service, Integrity, Professionalism and Teamwork.

DOLORES RIVERA EMPLOYEE OF THE 2ND QUARTER 2019 Executive Assistant to the Chief of Police Liz Stell The Chief’s Executive Assistant, Liz Stell, has made great efforts over this past quarter assisting in the planning and organizing of several community outreach events, to include Truck or Treat, Coffee with a COP, and Christmas for Kids. Time and time again, Liz goes above and beyond while setting up projects for employee functions such as our Thanksgiving Potluck, Rock Your Ugly Sweater, and our upcoming DPD Awards Banquet. She also took on the huge task of planning and scheduling our recent staff portraits. Liz has stayed late on many occasions to ensure all her projects are completed and perfected. She has worked well over this past quarter with the Assistant City Manager to ensure all employees have safe and functional workspaces. Liz also showed great initiative and thoughtfulness when she promoted and arranged the shipment of a Military Care Package to an officer over the holidays; who is currently deployed overseas. This idea was a great morale booster for the officer. Liz also demonstrated her attention to detail when she asked the right questions and gathered important specifics regarding how to properly process an incoming grant.

Her efforts in this area will make it easier for future grants to be processed more efficiently.

Love for chamber music led Ronda, of Sandy Springs, to found Franklin Pond almost 20 years ago. The program began with just four string quartets of students practicing at her home on Franklin Pond Road. Two quartets were assigned to bedrooms, another to the living room, and the fourth to the porch – when it wasn’t raining. The sixteen students were coached by professional musicians from the Atlanta Symphony, with occasional guest artists leading master classes.

Ronda’s idea met with enthusiastic reception from the young musicians. Franklin Pond grew dramatically into a year-around program with regular public recitals and an expanding team of professional musicians, a plus 4-day retreat at Jekyll Island.

Because chamber music is composed for a small ensemble of instruments playing together in an intimate setting, usually without a conductor, it offers young musicians the fellowship of practicing and performing with others without stepping into the formality and intimidation of a full orchestra. It requires immediate communication with other players and with the audience, presenting opportunities for leadership, cooperation and inspiration.

Ronda’s daughter Ginny is now a key part of Franklin Pond Chamber Music, administering its diverse activities under the supervision of a board of 15 devoted music lovers from the Atlanta community. She’s currently absorbed in details for hosting Franklin Pond’s most dramatic and high-profile activity: The Third Annual Franklin Pond Chamber Music Competition. This year’s competition, open to all young Georgia chamber music groups, was scheduled for Memorial Day weekend at Spivey Hall, but will now be a virtual competition with online entry. An international panel of prominent judges will select the recipients for cash prizes in multiple categories. Young musicians take note!

Hundreds of young people from the Atlanta area have participated in FPCM’s programs. Amazingly, half of them have gone on to study music in college or graduate school, and numerous participants have chosen music-making for their life work.

“Franklin Pond made me be a musician!” one young musician explained recently. “Playing chamber music is a great human exercise. It allows you to have a distinct voice, while it teaches you to listen to the other players around you. It inspires you to do your best. Most chamber music study programs are for older people, but Ronda and Franklin Pond want to instill these values in younger kids.
