IMMANUEL AND ALISON MARTINEZ GREW UP IN A SMALL TOWN IN MICHIGAN, BUT BARELY KNEW EACH OTHER. Alison left for college and Immanuel moved for work, reconnecting years later. With Immanuel in Arizona and Alison in their home state, they became frequent fliers spending time together. “It was a bit of a whirlwind romance. I knew she was the one right about our second date. It was just about one year after we started dating that I proposed,” says Immanuel. The couple was on a getaway, celebrating Alison’s birthday, when he popped the question. “I was looking out the window at the city from our suite, and when I turned around, he was down on one knee with a ring,” says Alison. As their future clicked into place, Immanuel’s cousin, Danielle Wells, offered her home for their wedding. “Before we were engaged, Manny’s cousin and her husband kept dropping hints to us about how cool it would be to have a wedding in their backyard—wink, wink,” Alison teases. “We were hesitant at first because we didn’t want to intrude. We knew it would be a lot of work and invasive to their lives.” The single-story home is 5,700 square feet and set on nearly an acre. They opened the sliding wall of windows leading to a large covered patio for a seamless transition to the lush backyard.

OPEN HOUSE (CONTINUED)
“The guests could easily move from the living room to the patio,” says Wells. “There was a taco truck set up in the backyard serving the most amazing Mexican food. There were pub tables around the pool, and the DJ had the dance floor under the patio. The ceremony was held on the west side of the backyard where we had bride and groom seating. The whole space worked great.” They rented tables, linens and an arch for the ceremony, as well as a galvanized tub for drinks. The bouquets, boutonnieres and corsages were made in-house. The centerpieces were mason jars filled with firefly lights surrounded by greens. Wells and her husband had a custom ice sculpture made for the dessert table, engraved with the bride and groom’s names. “Dani was a huge help to me with the planning. Ideas, placement, theme, shopping, set up, all of it! Our families also rallied on Friday and Saturday morning to set up and were troopers on Sunday morning when we had to tear everything back down,” says Alison. There were about 110 guests, so they rented a golf cart to direct traffic and chauffer them to the house. As guests arrived, they enjoyed the homemade charcuterie boards displayed on the kitchen island, and the pre-mixed margaritas and Bazooka bubble gum-infused vodka and lemonade. “Our cake was from the Great Gatsby Bakery in Gilbert, our absolute favorite place for a treat,” says Alison. “A home wedding is such a great way to take such a romantic event and make it intimate. My husband and I were so honored to be able to share in such a beautiful day with two of our favorite people. I would host another home wedding in a heartbeat,” says Wells. The Wells’ home is currently for sale. For more information on this home or any others, contact Cathy Carter at RealEstateChandler.com.

AS FOUNDER OF DENA THOMAS DESIGNS IN CHANDLER, DENA THOMAS IS VERY KNOWLEDGEABLE ABOUT THE CURRENT TRENDS IN THE WORLD OF INTERIOR DESIGN. For example, when it comes to flooring, luxury vinyl plank (LVP) is an attractive, stylish and popular option. “LVP is an extremely durable, grout-free, easyto-maintain flooring that is a great alternative to hardwood,” Thomas says, adding that it comes in various sizes, finishes, and styles. Depending on which specific type of LVP her clients choose, it can also be an economical option. There is often less labor involved to install LVP, and in some homes, it is possible to lay it over existing tile, as long as the floors are level. Laying the planks in a herringbone pattern has seen the resurgence of this luxury flooring pattern that is timeless. “I use LVP in 60% of my homes currently. More and more people love the idea of eliminating the grout in flooring, and this is a great alternative,” Thomas says. As a bonus, in addition to looking like real wood, LVP is waterproof—which means it can be used throughout the entire home. It’s softer on the foot than hardwood or engineered wood, and it’s incredibly durable. It also has acoustic qualities that make it suitable for condos. Additional types of luxury flooring that Thomas uses are marble, engineered hardwood, and high-end porcelain tiles. “I have used all of them, and today more and more people are choosing the LVPs,” she says. OTHER CURRENT TRENDS IN INTERIOR DESIGN In addition to LVP, Thomas says there are a number of other popular trends in interior design. These include:

+ Colors: Deep blues, grays and bold colors are definitely “in.” + Accessories: Black and brass are very hot right now. + Furniture: Both modern and traditional-looking furniture are popular with Thomas’ clients. + Finishes: Mixing various finishes is a great option for 2020. For instance, instead of a kitchen with all-nickel finishes, Thomas and her clients prefer brass and nickel or brass and black. + Walls: Wallpaper is huge, Thomas says. The bolder the better. + Counters: Even though quartz and granite are popular surfaces, the newest and most durable product is porcelain counters. + Patterns: In two words, “patterned everything.” As for what is currently “out,” Thomas says the following once-popular trends are now more passé: + Farmhouse anything. “If you must have it, do it in very small moderation,” she says. + All-white kitchens and counters. Instead, Thomas advises the homeowners incorporate a pop of color in the kitchen. + Faux finishes. + Neon lighting. + Accent walls. In general, Thomas recommends creating a home that is timeless instead of trendy. “Like anything else in life, work in trends in moderation,” she says, adding that at the end of the day, she enjoys her personal style because that’s what makes her house her home. “Too many people make the mistake of copycatting their friend’s or neighbor’s style, and do not take into consideration all the elements that are going on in their own home, which may or may not match up to their neighbor’s.” For more information on Dena Thomas Designs, visit DenaThomasDesigns.com.

Chandler Lifestyle | March 2020
DURING HER 13 YEARS WORKING IN THE REAL ESTATE INDUSTRY, TALIA STENNETT OFTEN SAW HOW A WELLSTAGED HOME COULD MAKE ALL THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A HOUSE SELLING OR SITTING ON THE MARKET. “Home staging has been proven over and over again to assist homes in selling faster as the presentation of the home is very important,” Stennett says. “Buyers start the search for their new home online, and if the home is staged properly and presented right with professional photos, more buyers will typically view all the photos and make an effort to go see the home fast.” This firsthand experience inspired Stennett and her husband, Kerry, to launch Spice Up Your Home, located at 4140 S. Arizona Ave., Chandler, in June of 2018. The Chandler-based company offers all-inclusive home staging services for clients who are looking to make their home stand out in Arizona’s competitive real estate market. As Stennett notes, Spice Up Your Home has two key components: staging, and a furniture store that carries brand-new, oneof-a-kind pieces. For the home staging part of her work, Stennett says their approach is different than many other companies, in part because they own their own furniture. “We only use new designer furniture; it is not rented from somewhere else and therefore it always looks new,” she says, adding that

“The store always changes with our new inventory, style and selection,” she says, adding that new pieces come in every week. “We invite everyone to come in and see our selection in person.” For people who would like advice on how to decorate their home, Stennett says they also offer a home consultation design service that involves going to the customer’s home. “We like to listen and understand what the client wants and envisions for
their home and help them achieve that, and we then offer suggestions and design ideas to complement the current pieces in the home and their ideas,” she explains. To honor all emergency personnel in the Valley, Stennett says they are proud to offer specials for local law enforcement, as well as veterans and those who currently serve in the military. “My husband is retired from law enforcement after 26 years of service, and so we always run a special for them to thank everyone at 911 for their service,” she notes. Stennett says she gets a lot of satisfaction from their staging work, as well as helping their valued customers find the perfect new pieces for their home. “For the staging, it is the best feeling in the world to cozy up a place and get it ready for sale,” she says. “And I love to help people to love their homes by assisting them in changing one room or the entire home. It is great to be able to go into a home and see what they currently have and help them choose the right furniture, wall art and décor to create the place we all love—our home.” For more information, visit SpiceUpYourHome.com or SUYHStaging.com.

THE SICILIAN BUTCHER & THE SICILIAN BAKER “The Sicilian Butcher was the first concept of its kind to launch in the Valley with its build-your-own meatball meal experience,” explains Joey Maggiore, executive chef and co-owner of The Maggiore Group. “The restaurant also has a group-friendly atmosphere with an expansive patio and one-ofa-kind items like our shareable Sicilian in Strada 5-foot long charcuterie board.” The menu was inspired by Maggiore’s Sicilian heritage. It features authentic Italian fare that’s equal parts classic and progressive. “With the create-your-own experiences for meatballs and cannoli at The Sicilian Butcher and The Sicilian Baker alike, these concepts will continue to expand with the fun and unparalleled spirit that they bring and we’re excited to share that fun with Chandler,” he says. 3151 W.
