One of Dr. Queen’s favorite stories is a young girl who came to see him when she was 7 years old. She had severe sensory processing issues. After receiving chiropractic care, the girl began to transform. On a cold winter’s morning when Dr. Queen was snowed in during a trip to Minneapolis, the girl’s mom emailed Dr. Queen and told him that her dreams were coming true. For the first time ever, she was able to play dress-up with her daughter as they prepared her to attend an upcoming Father/Daughter dance. The little girl is now leading a functional, full life thanks to the help she received at Straight Up Chiropractic. Dr. Queen said with great emotion, “This is why I do what I do.” Many people do not understand much about chiropractic and often turn to it as a last resort. While medicine can give immediate results, it only addresses symptoms, and the results are temporary. Chiropractic care is a process that addresses root issues and provides long-term results. It puts the function in the child and the beauty back into the family. Dr. Queen says it takes a special person to be a pediatric chiropractor. To empathize with the children, get on their level and play with them, as well as comfort and encourage the parents is mentally taxing and takes tremendous energy. But the results of his patients make the effort worth it for Dr. Queen. His message to parents, “There is hope for your kids. They don’t have to be stuck with a life of limitations.” He wants them to know that they do not have to endure any more sleepless nights worrying about their child. BACKYARDS HAVE LONG BEEN A PLACE WHERE FAMILIES CONGREGATE TO ENJOY KNOWS FROM EXPERIENCE THAT THE BACKYARD IS WHERE FAMILY MEMORIES ARE MADE. Numerous people are outfitting their backyard patios with grills, smokers, and even pizza ovens to give flavor and variety to their outdoor meal table. Currently, some of the most popular trends in backyard cooking equipment are pizza ovens and pellet grills. Charred offers pizza oven options to fit every outdoor space, including portable ovens for existing countertops and built-in ovens for a more permanent structure. Astolfo says that for his pizza oven, he purchases dough from a locally owned pizza restaurant. He said the flavor is excellent, and the process of making pizza is fun for the entire family. Gaining in popularity are pellet grills that allow you to smoke, grill, roast, and bake. These grills are fueled by seasoned wood pellets that come in a variety of flavors so you can change the taste of your meat by merely changing the pellets. Charred has ten different pellet options to choose from. And for the people who don’t own a smoker or pellet grill, Charred has smoke boxes for gas grills to give meat the same smoked flavor as a traditional smoker. "I Never Planned on Being a Disney Princess" JOLIE WILLIAMS HAS THE BIRDS EATING OUT OF HER HAND ARTICLE KAYLENE MATHEWS PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED
DISNEY PRINCESSES SNOW WHITE, AURORA, GISELLE, AND CINDERELLA ALL HAD BIRDS AS FRIENDS. They had a special connection with their feathered friends and McKinney resident, Jolie Williams has discovered she has the Princess magic too. When a backyard wild bird decided to adopt her on New Year’s Day, Williams’ life took an unexpected turn. Williams and her boyfriend had always loved animals and wildlife but took it to the next level when an Eastern Phoebe befriended them on New Year’s Day. While enjoying brunch in their backyard, this aggressively social bird joined the fun by landing on William’s boyfriend’s foot and then on his head. Phoebe, as they affectionately call her, has been a regular visitor to their home ever since. The only exception was a two-week disappearance in the spring when they learned something new about their bird friend. When Phoebe went missing for a couple of weeks, Williams discovered that Phoebe had a nest in the neighborhood and was caring for her eggs. After the eggs hatched, Phoebe visited Williams’ home anywhere from 100-200 times a day to get food for her growing brood. Soon the baby birds were in tow to the Williams smorgasbord, and Williams and her boyfriend gave them all names. Each bird is named after a movie personality such as Braveheart from the movie Braveheart, and Spicoli from Fast Times at Ridgemont High. Several of the baby birds have become regulars at the Williams’ dinner table visiting them daily. 24

Phoebe chilling on Jolie's boyfriend Mike
Phoebe eating out of Jolie's mouth
Williams started researching everything she could about Eastern Phoebes. She learned that they don’t eat seeds, but they are instead insectivores eating mealworms. Mealworms are the larval form of the mealworm beetle. Williams began buying mealworms at the local store Wild Birds Unlimited, but after going through 5000 mealworms in 2 weeks, she decided to try her hand at raising them herself. She is into her first trial batch and so far, so good. The birds eat from Williams’ hands and even from her lips. Williams said when she tried holding a mealworm between her lips; Phoebe unabashedly claimed her prize right off Williams’ lips. While this might not sound appealing to some, Williams shared that mealworms are a good source of protein. She said that some people eat them as a substitute for nuts. Williams says she plans to experiment with a few recipes in the future to try it out. Williams also has a seed bird feeder in her backyard, which attracts a variety of birds, including blue jays, cardinals, chickadees, Carolina wrens, and a tufted titmouse. Inside the house, she and her boyfriend own two pet dogs. Williams grew up loving nature and animals. Her grandparents lived on 5 acres near Lake Lewisville, where she remembers many an outdoor meal watching the local wildlife. There were snakes, coyotes, opossums, and more. She grew to love them all. If you want to see what Phoebe is up to today, check out her Facebook page, where Williams documents Phoebe’s daily activities. https://www.facebook.com/ PhoebeMealWorms CityLifestyle.com/McKinneyandProsper

+ Cardboard + White crepe paper + Construction paper + Glue + Scissors + Beads, yarn, pom poms, etc.
DIRECTIONS 1. Take your cardboard and cut two pieces into the shape of a llama (we found a stencil online). Then, cut strips of cardboard the depth you want your llama to be. You’ll connect these to either side of the llama cutouts to enclose your piñata. 2. Glue your strip of cardboard all along the edge of one side of your llama, then glue to the other side. (Be sure to leave a hole you can close up later so you can fill it with your favorite candy!) 3. Starting at the neck, cover the front, back and sides of your llama with white crepe paper, cutting a slit every half inch or so to create the traditional piñata look. 4. Cover all remaining sides the neck and head with white construction paper, cut to fit your design. 5. Using construction paper, beads, pom poms, tassels, buttons, etc., add some flair to the rest of your llama! Bonus points for incorporating different shapes and textures into your final product.
