"I Never Planned on Being a Disney Princess" JOLIE WILLIAMS HAS THE BIRDS EATING OUT OF HER HAND ARTICLE KAYLENE MATHEWS PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

DISNEY PRINCESSES SNOW WHITE, AURORA, GISELLE, AND CINDERELLA ALL HAD BIRDS AS FRIENDS. They had a special connection with their feathered friends and McKinney resident, Jolie Williams has discovered she has the Princess magic too. When a backyard wild bird decided to adopt her on New Year’s Day, Williams’ life took an unexpected turn.

Williams and her boyfriend had always loved animals and wildlife but took it to the next level when an Eastern Phoebe befriended them on New Year’s Day. While enjoying brunch in their backyard, this aggressively social bird joined the fun by landing on William’s boyfriend’s foot and then on his head. Phoebe, as they affectionately call her, has been a regular visitor to their home ever since. The only exception was a two-week disappearance in the spring when they learned something new about their bird friend.

When Phoebe went missing for a couple of weeks, Williams discovered that Phoebe had a nest in the neighborhood and was caring for her eggs. After the eggs hatched, Phoebe visited Williams’ home anywhere from 100-200 times a day to get food for her growing brood.

Soon the baby birds were in tow to the Williams smorgasbord, and Williams and her boyfriend gave them all names. Each bird is named after a movie personality such as Braveheart from the movie Braveheart, and Spicoli from Fast Times at Ridgemont High. Several of the baby birds have become regulars at the Williams’ dinner table visiting them daily.

Williams started researching everything she could about Eastern Phoebes. She learned that they don’t eat seeds, but they are instead insectivores eating mealworms. Mealworms are the larval form of the mealworm beetle. Williams began buying mealworms at the local store Wild Birds Unlimited, but after going through 5000 mealworms in 2 weeks, she decided to try her hand at raising them herself. She is into her first trial batch and so far, so good.

The birds eat from Williams’ hands and even from her lips. Williams said when she tried holding a mealworm between her lips; Phoebe unabashedly claimed her prize right off Williams’ lips. While this might not sound appealing to some, Williams shared that mealworms are a good source of protein. She said that some people eat them as a substitute for nuts. Williams says she plans to experiment with a few recipes in the future to try it out.

Williams also has a seed bird feeder in her backyard, which attracts a variety of birds, including blue jays, cardinals, chickadees, Carolina wrens, and a tufted titmouse. Inside the house, she and her boyfriend own two pet dogs.

Williams grew up loving nature and animals. Her grandparents lived on 5 acres near Lake Lewisville, where she remembers many an outdoor meal watching the local wildlife. There were snakes, coyotes, opossums, and more. She grew to love them all.

CAPRESE SALAD

WITH AVOCADO IN RECENT YEARS CAPRESE SALADS HAVE BECOME POPULAR. The basic recipe calls for tomato, mozzarella and basil. A sprinkle of balsamic vinegar or a seasoning can add additional flavor.

INGREDIENTS + 5 slices of tomato + 10 slices of mozzarella + 2 avocados cut into 30 thin slices + 3 to 4 large basil leaves (chopped or whole) + ¼ c extra-virgin olive oil or avocado oil (optional) + 1 lime halved (optional)

DIRECTIONS Lay the tomato slices on a serving plate (or whole grain toast). On top of each tomato stack a mozzarella slice, 3 avocado slices and basil. If desired, drizzle with the oil and squeeze lime juice over top. Five servings.

+ Cardboard + White crepe paper + Construction paper + Glue + Scissors + Beads, yarn, pom poms, etc.

DIRECTIONS 1. Take your cardboard and cut two pieces into the shape of a llama (we found a stencil online). Then, cut strips of cardboard the depth you want your llama to be. You’ll connect these to either side of the llama cutouts to enclose your piñata.

2. Glue your strip of cardboard all along the edge of one side of your llama, then glue to the other side.

(Be sure to leave a hole you can close up later so you can fill it with your favorite candy!)

3. Starting at the neck, cover the front, back and sides of your llama with white crepe paper, cutting a slit every half inch or so to create the traditional piñata look.

4. Cover all remaining sides the neck and head with white construction paper, cut to fit your design.

5. Using construction paper, beads, pom poms, tassels, buttons, etc., add some flair to the rest of your llama!

Bonus points for incorporating different shapes and textures into your final product.

DIRECTIONS 1. Using a stencil, cut out the pieces you’ll need for your flamingo from construction paper: Pink: 4-6 circles for the body (depending on how “fluffy” you want it), neck and legs White: Outline of the beak Black: Beak 2. Fold the circles in half and glue them all together back-to-back to create a sphere that looks like an accordion.

3. Glue the beak and white stripe to the neck, then glue the neck to a flat side of your inner-most circle.

4. Add the legs, a black dot for an eye and pink feathers for the ultimate flamin-goal.

DIRECTIONS 1. Cut out the shapes for your rocket ship. You’ll need: (2) rocket bodies for the front and back of your ship, (2) fins, (1) nozzle, (1) nose cone, (3) rectangles for your pencil cup, and any additional cutouts for decorations, like windows.

2. Glue the your rectangular pieces to one side of your rocket ship, then glue the back on. You should have an open spot at the top where your pencils will go.

3. Glue the rest of your pieces to the front of your rocket and add embellishments as desired.

DIRECTIONS 1. Prep the pieces you’ll need for each piece of your garland—you’ll need a combination of large half circles, slightly smaller half circles and any other decorative shapes you want to add.

2. Take the largest half circles and fold multiple times to make small creases, creating the crinkle effect.

Glue the smaller half circles on top and then add any additional decorative shapes.

3. Punch holes in both ends of the completed product to place string through, then hang on a wall or in a doorway.
