February is the month to LIVE LOVE. What better way to show your love than caring for those that depend on us most. Home is more than a building or an address, it’s where you experience life, laughter, family connections and joy. Part of the joy, we as Idahoans embrace, is our love of animals. We love them and care for them and this month, I would like to salute the Idaho Humane Society. I will match your donation in the month of February to the Idaho Humane Society, up to $1000. If you’re looking for a furry addition, consider a rescue pet. I will be there to find your perfect home or investment property for you and your furry friends. I take the time to truly listen to what you want to accomplish in buying and selling with innovative marketing concepts from planning through a smooth close. Whether new to Boise or an Idaho Native, you deserve service that goes far beyond a standard agent. Choose Patti Cole – Only at Group One Sotheby’s International Realty.
The mission of the Idaho Humane Society is to advocate for the welfare and responsible care of animals, protect them from neglect and cruelty, and promote humane education, awareness, and compassion. We believe that because domestic animals are a product of human intervention, we have a special obligation to them in regard to humane treatment and responsible stewardship.

BOISE IDANHA HOTEL RAINY CLEARING STORM LOOMS ABOVE THE HISTORIC IDANHA HOTEL ONE OF THE ARCHITECTURAL ICONS OF BOISE IS THE FAMOUS IDANHA HOTEL. Beautiful architecture that is unlike any other buildings in Boise. I enjoy seeing some of those old pictures of Boise with the streets filled with Model A’s and in Black and White and there is the Idanha Hotel standing there is its all of its glory. For this picture. I got up early on a rainy morning, before there was much traffic and when the lighting was still muffled. My goal was to take a portrait of the Idanha with the look the way it did in those old pictures. I choose and angle where I could isolate the Idanha from other buildings. I then removed most of the color. 14

OUT WITH THE

old WE’RE SHARING TIPS, TRICKS + UNIQUE WAYS TO INCORPORATE YOUR ANTIQUE ITEMS INTO YOUR HOME
ANTIQUES ARE MAKING A COMEBACK. Whether you’re an antique aficionada, a thrifty thrifter or new to the whole concept of vintage revival; whether it’s a hand-me-down, a thrift-store-find or just something cool you stumbled upon at an estate sale; endless opportunities exist to effortlessly incorporate retro, vintage, antique or whatever-you-want-to-call-them items into different parts of your modern home.

WHAT IT IS Antique Chest STYLE IT Coffee Table PRO TIP Revive solid-wood pieces with little actual value by refinishing the
tips
wood to your liking.
Don’t be afraid to do something different, and don’t take things too seriously. If the piece you’re working with doesn’t have any real value, you have so many options to liven it up, including paint, finish and hardware.
Make your piece multi-purpose by turning the lid into a game table or by storing your cocktail accessories inside for an easy-access mini bar!
Spread the vintage love. Use antiques strategically and as accent pieces to keep your overall aesthetic from coming off as too dated.
Repurpose old tins, mugs, teacups or storage containers into succulent gardens. Because succulents have shallow root systems, they can survive (and thrive!) in smaller spaces.
Make it art. Don’t be afraid to display unique pieces as wall art. Consider creating a gallery wall that mixes vintage photographs, prints, mirrors and china.

KATIE HIEB @BAKEIT.PALEO I’m a stay-at-home mom of three who has lived in the Boise area for over 20 years. I met my husband at the University of Idaho and we both decided Boise is where we want to be. I’ve always loved the Boise area – the community, people and feel of the city. As a stay-at-home mom, I am always busy with the family and keeping the house in order. Since having kids I’ve realized how important it is to focus on getting in some “me” time and engaging in things that I love to do. It makes me a better mom and wife! Some of these “me” time activities include working out at the downtown YMCA, where I’ve been a member since grade school. As well as, keeping up with my recipe blog and remaining active on Instagram.
WHAT ARE YOU PASSIONATE ABOUT? I’m passionate about living a healthy lifestyle and teaching my kids to do the same. One of the ways in which I try to stay healthy is to eat the way that makes me feel my best – eating a mostly Paleo diet. I do nearly all of the cooking in our household and using fresh, mostly organic, whole food ingredients is important to me. I also love to bake – I have quite the sweet tooth. After years of sharing meals and recipes on social media, I created a Paleo recipe blog. I find great joy in creating recipes using Paleo friendly ingredients and sharing them with my family and anyone else who is looking for healthy treats or “real food” eats.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT LIVING IN IDAHO? First and foremost, I love the people! The people here are so welcoming and friendly. Which, if you live here you know! I also love the parks, hiking trails, the green belt, and the feel of living in a big city but without all the people.

KIRSTEN GROVE @SIMPLYGROVE @WETHREEDESIGN I have always had a passion for interior design. When I was 9 years old I chose an eclectic palette of rainbows, polka dots, and stripes to decorate my room. I even divided my bedroom into zones. I had big plans! Today I use Simply Grove as a creative outlet for all things aesthetically beautiful. I started blogging in 2008 to show off eye-catching design and decor from all over the world. Fast forward 12 years later, I have had the opportunity to style and design for clients all over the world. Along with Nicole Powell and Sam Salinas, I run a full-service design firm here in Boise. We have projects that span across the states, including residential and commercial.
WHAT ARE YOU PASSIONATE ABOUT? My family means the world to me! Both of my children are adopted, so you can say that I am very passionate about adoption. Seeing children united with their forever families is the most beautiful thing in the world. I am also passionate about food, travel and coffee. Maybe I should have started out with coffee!
WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT LIVING IN IDAHO? Idaho is full of beauty! There are so many gorgeous spots scattered across this state. I’ve lived in Idaho for 22 years and I swear I learn of a new destination all the time. I have lived in the pacific northwest my whole life, and I have to say that Idaho has become my favorite.

LOCAL FAVORITES (CONTINUED)
EMILEE AYERS @THISISBOISE, @THISISBOISENIGHTLIFE Clearly, I am huge fan of breakfast food. When making plans with visiting guests I always base the day’s adventures off where we will eat breakfast. But really, I love all things Boise has to offer. My pastimes include spending time outside with my dogs and exploring all the unique experiences that Boise has to offer.
WHAT ARE YOU PASSIONATE ABOUT? I truly believe that storytelling is the heart of community. This Is Boise allows a creative outlet to share events, experiences, and unique stories in a meaningful way that followers can gain value from.
WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT LIVING IN IDAHO? Living in Idaho is so fun in so many ways. My favorite thing would have to be that there are so many accessible activities for everyone, and that the activities vary with the seasons.

PARTING THOUGHTS
Inspired b y S u c c e s s
Tom Callos
WHAT STARTED YOU ON YOUR CAREER PATH? I’ve spent 50 years studying, practicing, and teaching the martial arts, a career first inspired in 1966 when I saw Bruce Lee on TV in The Green Hornet. As I immersed myself in the practice, I came to understand that, like most factors that make up a life worth living, the real work is a thing of the spirit. The mechanics of it all is just a delivery system for life lessons that are meant to bring about clarity of thinking and purpose-driven action. WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU ARE PROUD OF? I am proud of having launched an acts of kindness program in the international martial arts community, just after 9/11, that has been a catalyst for many millions of kind acts done around the world by young people. One of my students, Brian Williams, carries on the work through his non-profit ThinkKindness.org. WHAT ARE YOU PASSIONATE ABOUT? Printmaking --and art in general, be it art expressed on paper, canvas, in performance, in sculpture, and/or the written or spoken word. Art makes us more human. HOW DO YOU DEFINE SUCCESS? Success is defined in how we take what we know and apply it in helping ourselves and other people, places, and things. I coined, “Out of the dojo and into the world,” to describe success in the context of teaching people the core principles of martial arts practice. For the teacher, success might be measured by how students take what is practiced on the mats (or in any classroom) and apply it in --and on
