A G E TA W AY FOR THE GALS THE CHIC CABIN IN HOCKING HILLS THAT’S PERFECT FOR A GIRLS’ TRIP

South Dayton Lifestyle | May 2020

SOMETIMES YOU JUST NEED SOME TIME AWAY WITH YOUR GIRLFRIENDS. When the urge to reconnect and recharge arises, there is no better place than Ivy Cottage. Nestled in nearby Hocking Hills, Ivy Cottage is one of the unique properties built and owned by Dianna Shurz and her husband. Recently retired from 35 years in the direct selling industry, Shurz is not one to sit idle. She and her husband had run Creative Cabinets, a cabinetry business focusing on high-end residential and museum projects, for 20 years. When the pair decided to expand their custom cabinetry business to include cabins for rent under the name Creative Cabins, they went looking for a location that would provide the serenity of a secluded getaway near the many activities and amenities of the surrounding area. Hocking Hills seemed the perfect environment for visitors hoping to escape with CONTINUED >

named for a cherished grandchild.) Ivy Cottage is a “barndominium,” with sliding barn doors opening to reveal a space with white shiplap walls and a great room with a gas fireplace. The cottage sleeps eight, with two queen-size beds and a room with bunk beds, which have been well received by both adults and children. A full kitchen allows for as much meal prep as visitors desire. The hallway was designed to be wide enough to accommodate a folding massage table, so visitors can take advantage of traveling massage services available in the area. Additionally, the cottage is equipped with Wi-Fi, and the great room and bedrooms have televisions.

05

“Glamping” At Its Finest The bathroom includes a spa shower and is stocked with spa-like supplies. Traveling massage services will come right to the cottage.

Of course, visitors to Ivy Cottage won’t want to spend all of their time inside. The resort-like cottage features front porch rocking chairs, seating on the back deck for eight, a covered dining area, a hot tub, a gas grill and a fire pit. Shurz even makes sure the property is equipped with firewood. Shurz finds the little amenities to be of great importance in creating an ambiance of relaxation and space to reconnect. This is why she is sure to stock the spa-like bathroom with the best towels and makeup cloths. The cottage includes games for groups to play, and the kitchen is stocked with Starbucks coffee.

Ivy Cottage is situated near some of the most popular sites and

activities in Hocking Hills. It is near Old Man’s Cave, an area known for its expansive hiking trails and beautiful waterfalls. Hocking Hills State Park also offers ziplining and canoeing for groups that are feeling adventurous. The area is replete with popular restaurants; and The Hocking Hills Winery is the perfect location for friends on a getaway to enjoy appetizers and live music, as well as bringing home a bottle or two to share around a fire. Hocking Hills is located within an hour’s drive of several day trip options, like Historic Lancaster, Wayne National Forest and the Bob Evans Farm. Shurz notes that Ivy Cottage was designed for groups such as girlfriends who want to find a place to get away and enjoy a comfortable and inviting atmosphere, with plenty of space and opportunity to talk, laugh and reconnect. “I want people to relax and kick back,” she said. I N TH E I R 5 SUCCESSFUL SOUTH DAYTON-BASED BUSINESSWOMEN SHARE WORDS OF WISDOM AND OPTIMISM

TRACY COMBS DIRECTOR OF NURSING + NATIONAL CHURCH RESIDENCES, LEGACY VILLAGE WHAT WAS THE DEFINING MOMENT IN YOUR LIFE THAT LED YOU INTO THE CAREER YOU HAVE TODAY? I remember being a junior at Wittenberg University and breaking down telling my parents I didn’t want to be a teacher; I wanted to do something in the medical field. The best part about nursing is that it combines my love and passion for the medical field with allowing me to continue to learn and educate others. DESCRIBE A CHALLENGE THAT YOU’VE SUCCESSFULLY OVERCOME IN YOUR INDUSTRY. Our industry is constantly changing. As a newer nurse in a director’s role, it’s been challenging to learn all of the things they don’t teach you in nursing school; however, being flexible and on top of the ever-changing rules is why I love it. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO YOUR 12-YEAR-OLD SELF? Say yes to the experiences, to the adventures, to the invitations. Believe in yourself! Even if it’s scary, say yes! WHAT EXCITES YOU THE MOST ABOUT WHERE YOU’RE AT IN YOUR CAREER? Continuing to learn the long-term care industry and continuing to build relationships with my staff, residents, families and fellow colleagues excite me. WHAT SONG REALLY GETS YOU PUMPED UP AND MOTIVATED TO SEIZE THE DAY? “Shake It Off,” by Taylor Swift.

VIVIAN O’CONNELL DEVELOPMENT DIRECTOR + UNITED REHABILITATION SERVICES OF GREATER DAYTON (URS) WHAT WAS THE DEFINING MOMENT IN YOUR LIFE THAT LED YOU INTO THE CAREER YOU HAVE TODAY? My parents fostered many children throughout my childhood, and that had a profound impact on me. I always knew I wanted my career to have a positive impact on the world around me and help others. DESCRIBE A CHALLENGE THAT YOU’VE SUCCESSFULLY OVERCOME IN YOUR INDUSTRY. Competition for donor dollars is a real challenge for any nonprofit organization; and finding a way to rise to the top by identifying donors’ passions is one way I’ve overcome it. I look for opportunities to engage these individuals with my mission. The impact we’re having every day on the children and adults with disabilities whom we serve fuels my commitment to making a difference. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO YOUR 12-YEAR-OLD SELF? You only live once; make the most of this life! WHAT EXCITES YOU THE MOST ABOUT WHERE YOU’RE AT IN YOUR CAREER? Fundraising comes in many forms, and the possibilities are endless. I hang my hat on the fact that 100% of the revenue I help raise for URS through special events, major gifts and grant writing stays in our community to benefit real people. I know we are changing lives every day, and that is what truly excites me! WHAT SONG REALLY GETS YOU PUMPED UP AND MOTIVATED TO SEIZE THE DAY? “A Sky Full of Stars,” by Coldplay.

LEAH MOON MARKETING, EVENTS AND TRADE SHOWS + ESKO DESCRIBE A CHALLENGE THAT YOU’VE SUCCESSFULLY OVERCOME IN YOUR INDUSTRY. Being in marketing, you learn very quickly that you need to adapt to just about anything and everything. One day you could be playing one role and the next day another. One of the biggest challenges for me was accepting that you don’t have to be everything and do everything. I’ve learned that it’s okay to delegate tasks and create a more collaborative environment. WHAT EXCITES YOU THE MOST ABOUT WHERE YOU’RE AT IN YOUR CAREER? That this doesn’t have to be the final stage. There’s always an opportunity to learn and grow, so there’s no place to go but up! WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO YOUR 12-YEAR-OLD SELF? Be strong. Be smart. Be brave. Be you. WHAT SONG REALLY GETS YOU PUMPED UP AND MOTIVATED TO SEIZE THE DAY? “Lose Yourself,” by Eminem.

When I was a teacher, I noticed that the students needed my emotional support before my teaching ability. Children are in an emotional crisis now; and more are taking mind-altering medication than ever, because that is the only option given to parents. EPT is an alternative to medication. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO YOUR 12-YEAR-OLD SELF? You are absolutely beautiful. Honor your intelligence. Be true to yourself. WHAT EXCITES YOU THE MOST ABOUT WHERE YOU’RE AT IN YOUR CAREER? Every day I am given the esteemed pleasure of healing children’s and adults’ emotional state. WHAT WAS THE DEFINING MOMENT IN YOUR LIFE THAT LED YOU INTO THE CAREER YOU HAVE TODAY? When I realized that “growth” and “comfort” do not coexist and that I had to step out of my comfort zone in order to achieve personal and career growth. DESCRIBE A CHALLENGE THAT YOU’VE SUCCESSFULLY OVERCOME IN YOUR INDUSTRY. Defining myself differently in a saturated market helps me overcome the many challenges in real estate. Having an interior design background, I can help realize my clients’ visions and present them with the potential in a property, which can otherwise be challenging on their own. For my clients who are selling, I have an edge on helping them get their home ready to place successfully on the market. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO YOUR 12-YEAROLD SELF? Don’t dwell on what could happen because of fear and self-doubt; take a chance before an opportunity passes you by. WHAT EXCITES YOU THE MOST ABOUT WHERE YOU’RE AT IN YOUR CAREER? Being included in such a big moment in people’s lives and being part of a brokerage that donates a portion of my sales to the local charity of my choice is something different, exciting and important to me. PACK YOUR SMALL SPACES WITH A BIG PUNCH BY STARTING YOUR OWN CONTAINER GARDEN

IT MAY BE THAT YOU DON’T HAVE MUCH SPACE TO WORK WITH; MAYBE YOU ARE ALWAYS ON-THE-MOVE; OR, MAYBE YOU JUST SIMPLY COLOR TO YOUR SPACE. It doesn’t matter what your reason may be. Container gardening—the practice of growing plants exclusively in containers rather than in the ground—is a great way to pack some punch into a small (or portable!) space. With container gardening, there are almost endless possibilities. Whether you’re looking to grow decorative plants or edible ones, there’s likely an option for you— and it doesn’t have to be limited to simply growing herbs

Different plants grow best in different environments, so be sure to choose species that will thrive where you’ve decided to put them—making sure they are receiving the proper amount of sunlight and moisture.

Here are a few other things to be aware of when you get started: CONTAINER SIZES: Large containers may be easier to grow plants in than small since

they have more space for large root systems and larger amounts of soil retain more moisture. + CONTAINER DRAINAGE: Your container must have a drainage system—even if it’s just a few holes you drill in it yourself. For plants that need to be watered more frequently, consider self-watering containers. + CONTAINER MATERIALS: The fun thing about container gardens is that you don’t have to limit yourself. Get creative with the containers you use (while keeping the above information in mind)! We love repurposing vintage items into unique containers.

The containers you choose are going to largely depend on the type of plant you’re trying to grow and the best space and environment for it to grow in. If you’re looking for the bare basics, there are a lot of different vegetables — like cabbage, celery, green onions, lettuce and leeks — that can grow in water alone. If you’re looking for a way to use that vintage glassware or pitchers hiding in your cupboards, here’s your chance! the center of life, cooking just like Nonna did, with memorized recipes altered at will to suit individual tastes. One day, however, she realized that Nonna’s traditional ways of cooking were in danger of being lost forever. “I’d better write these down,” she told herself; and the result was Recipes My Nonna Taught Me, a cookbook that preserves these authentic Italian recipes. The cookbook caught on, through word of mouth and Hall’s in-person marketing efforts. What started as Hall making a few copies of the recipes for her husband’s office quickly turned into visits to area businesses, festivals and eventually cities with large Italian-descent populations. Hall was surprised at the audience that emerged for the cookbook. She expected it to find a home on the bookshelves of mothers who were searching for dinner solutions. Instead, she found her largest audience to be older Italian Americans who wanted help finding and remembering the recipes they loved in their youth. Just like Nonna, Hall views her recipes as guides, more than directives. She encourages readers to adapt the recipes to their own tastes and needs. Then, she notes, WHEN

TIMEOUT CHALLENEGE

WHEN I WAS A KID, BEING SENT TO TIMEOUT WAS NOT A GOOD THING. But as an adult, I wouldn’t mind sitting alone in a corner or being sent to my room, if it meant I could have a little downtime to myself! Forced peace and quiet? Yes, please. As women, we are constantly putting out fires, checking off to-do lists, making sure this thing or that thing gets done, and even redoing things when they aren’t done correctly by someone else (ahem, men)! We can frequently find ourselves drained of physical and mental energy. Sometimes it’s hard to find time to unplug, because we either feel guilty or don’t think we have the time or resources. At least, that’s how I feel, and often! I decided to challenge my thinking and put a one-hour meeting in my calendar with myself, at the new Hand & Stone Massage and Facial Spa at Cornerstone of Centerville.
