RUBY GRANT PARK DESIGNED WITH EMPHASIS ON ACCESSIBILITY FOR ALL TYPES OF DISABILITIES

WHO WAS RUBY GRANT? The park is named in honor of Ruby Grant, who lived most of her life at the site in a modest home that her parents built shortly after the Land Run of 1889. She was a schoolteacher who taught reading and music to many young people in the Norman area. Prior to her passing in 1998, she arranged for her family assets to be given to the University of Oklahoma to support the School of Music and a reading program. The site was subsequently purchased by the City of Norman for the purpose of providing a public park.

CAN YOU SHARE SOME OF THE PARK’S HISTORY? The Master Plan for the Ruby Grant Park site was approved by the Norman City Council in January of 2008. Funding for the first phase of construction was made available in 2015, when the project was approved by Norman voters as part of the Norman Forward quality-of-life initiative. Emphasis on accessibility for all types of disabilities has been given throughout the design process. The park will be a destination for the disabled as well as able bodied park users.

The park, a full 148 acres, will be located on the east side of 36th Avenue NW, just north of All Saints Catholic School and Fowler Toyota to Franklin Road, to North Interstate Drive on the east.

True Sky’s financial outreach programs are offered free of charge and are available to any school, group or organization. Crone notes that one of their biggest successes was bringing Kathy Kraninger, director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, to meet with students.

“She joined the students in a workshop and participated fully in the program.

Afterward she spoke to the students about the importance of making wise financial decisions,” says Crone.

True Sky is currently developing an online course management app for iOS and Android to work in conjunction with Oklahoma’s financial education curriculum.

The free app will feature video courses and assessments for students, a virtual Reality Fair, a budget calculator and more. True

Sky hopes to launch the new app by the end of 2020. Additionally, True Sky offers a Community Card program designed to support local high schools.

“Our Community Cards provide students and parents to show support for their school with a school-branded debit card,” Crone explains. “A portion of every purchase is then given directly back to their school.”

Crone says the positive reactions that they receive from the students make their financial education outreach efforts all worthwhile.

When 2-year-old Kyla Voegerl of Lawton developed a persistent fever in early April, followed by loss of appetite and lethargic behavior, her mother, Alexandria Voegerl, knew it was time to act. Ultimately, a rash and swelling of the skin began to occur.

Kyla was taken to The Children’s Hospital at OU Medicine.

As part of the protocols imposed by the pandemic, still accelerating in mid-April, the child underwent testing for COVID-19 and was found to be positive for the virus. Kawasaki disease is rare; COVID-19 is very new and somewhat mysterious. Kyla had both, and her mother was stunned and frightened. To make matters worse, Voegerl’s husband, Matt, was in isolation, having just returned from military service in Korea. It was weeks before the family could be reunited and experience the comfort of physical presence.

Voegerl said despite all the material she had read about COVID-19, there was a great deal of confusing and sometimes contradictory information, especially related to how the virus affects children. In comments directed to other parents, Voegerl urged them not to casually dismiss symptoms.

“Make sure you are checking their temperature; keep in touch with the doctors,” Voegerl said. “I had no idea. I just thought she was sick, and it could have been a lot more serious.”

Nicholas Peterson, M.D., a pediatrician at The Children’s Hospital, said the fluid nature of the COVID-19 pandemic has posed unusual challenges, particularly in the diagnosis and treatment of children.

“Even though Kyla tested positive, she didn’t really exhibit the classic adult symptoms that you see with a COVID-19 infection,” he said.

Kawasaki disease, also called mucocutaneous lymph node syndrome because of glandular swelling that occurs during infection, primarily affects children younger than 5 years of age.

Symptoms advance in three phases, with persistent fever typically being the first to present.

Peterson said other families across the country have faced similar circumstances related to the pandemic, fighting a disease called MIS-C—multisystem inflammatory syndrome.

Media accounts report children experiencing heart attacks and lengthy stays in intensive care units. While MIS-C is linked in some way to COVID-19, the connection is unclear and not well understood. According to Peterson, these are important distinctions even though the disease process is similar.

Kyla responded well to treatment and was discharged after a few days. Voegerl said Kyla is once again her “sassy self,” doing well and going for periodic check-ups. Family members had to continue to self-isolate for two more weeks after Kyla’s release from the hospital. Voegerl is thankful that she and the doctors acted quickly, and that the pediatric experts at The Children’s Hospital knew what to do.

“It was the scariest thing for me because this is my baby,” said Voegerl. “[Dr. Peterson] was so kind and calm; he just talked to me and let me know all the information I needed.”

Cassie Eads, program director with Precollegiate Programs, said her team has enjoyed the creative challenge of finding appropriate activities, learning how to film and edit from home and keeping the content fun and engaging.

“Our programs are STEAM focused, so we knew that our audience would be excited to see similar activities,” said Eads.

“While we would typically have longer, more in-depth projects happening at camp, we wanted to focus on small, teachable activities that could be done with supplies most families have at home. We wanted to strike that balance of engaging and fun but still keep learning throughout the summer.”

Precollegiate Programs ordinarily offers 10 one-week sessions of Mini College for rising first- through sixth-graders, as well as residential summer academies for middle school and high school students. Other Precollegiate Programs events held on campus annually include gifted and talented opportunities and a one-day Model United Nations Workshop.

THIS YEAR, THE WORLD FACED AN UNPRECEDENTED TIME IN HISTORY WHEN THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC CLOSED THE DOORS OF SCHOOLS, BUSINESSES AND CHURCHES WORLDWIDE. During weeks of social distancing and isolation, the global church looked for creative ways to deliver hope to those struggling with fear and anxiety. One of those ways was through online church services. ​​​​Life.Church, a multisite church with 10 locations in the Oklahoma City metro area and 34 locations nationwide, first launched online church services in 2006. It began as a way to reach people beyond the church walls, but when churches closed this year, Life.Church Online allowed attenders to continue gathering, even though they were confined to their homes to help stop the spread of the virus.

“We weren’t meant to do this life alone,” said Joey ​​​​ Armstrong, pastor of Life.Church Moore. “We were created to be in community with one another, and we weren’t going to let the virus stop us from meeting together as a church family.” ​​​​Every week, Life.Church Online has 90 digital church services that include worship, biblical teaching and community through live chat. During the pandemic, local pastors expanded the Life.Church Online experience by using Facebook Live to interact with attenders in place of their usual face-to-face lobby conversations. Life.Church also launched a temporary Midweek Worship service with Senior Pastor Craig Groeschel to encourage people between weekend messages. ​​​​With the weekend and midweek meetings anchoring each week of the pandemic, local pastors filled the gaps with other opportunities to connect. Many coordinated online prayer and worship nights, played games over Facebook Live chats, and shared short devotional videos throughout the week. Life.Church Norman even hosted online Leadership Lunches to discuss the newest Craig Groeschel Leadership Podcast episodes. ​​​​Interestingly, some of the most meaningful conversations came through long-standing technology. Pastors made phone calls to thousands of attenders to check on them and pray for them. ​​​​“Our desire is always to make people feel needed and known, but it seemed even more important during a time when people had so little interaction with others,” said Brian Word, pastor of Life.Church South Oklahoma City. “One of my team members called a man who shared his friend had just taken his life. In just a few minutes on the phone, the man was encouraged and knew he’d found someone he could call anytime he was struggling. Delivering hope like that is what we’re all about.”

Groups of volunteers delivered groceries to elderly and immunocompromised people, helped stock and organize local food pantries, showed appreciation to first responders, provided masks to nonprofit partners and hospitals, and did their best to love their neighbors. ​​​​“The major question we kept asking ourselves was: how can we serve the community without a building to meet in?” said Armstrong. “We knew the church isn’t a building. It’s the people.

“We see them until they graduate from high school or decide they are too big for our chairs,” Ward said, laughing. They also do crowns, fillings and extractions, as well as provide emergency care for broken or chipped teeth.

Ward said her own dental issues during childhood led her to her chosen career.

“I was missing nine permanent teeth, so I got to see firsthand how great of an impact dentists had on me in helping me be confident in my smile,” Ward said. “In college I worked for a pediatric dentist. I loved how much fun I had at the office and how the pediatric dentist eased

HUGO This 6-year-old (single) French Bulldog (Facebook) finds happiness in people and food, according to his Facebook page. He is further described as a “professional eater and sleeper at Bold Multimedia”; the site also says he “studies snatching food from the air after someone's dropped it at the School of Eating.” Hugo also is a working dog. According to his “mom,” Krystyn Richardson, he “manages social media for Bold Multimedia” and won the love and admiration of many when he starred in a recent production of Legally Blonde at Norman’s Sooner Theatre.

GEORGE George the hound (#georgethehound) now has a great life, but he didn’t always. Rob Wilson rescued the dog when his former owner was throttling him in public. He and his wife, Sereta

Bonnie

Wilson, ultimately adopted him, but only after much soul-searching, as Sereta was going through a difficult time in her life and the couple were both juggling multiple endeavors. It’s taken a lot of patience and therapy, and Sereta says George still has his “naughty” moments, but today he is a valued member of the family who gives as much as he receives.

BONNIE Bonnie (@bonniebarksalot), Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, came to Megan and Steve Drew a year and a half ago through a rescue organization. She had been used as a breeding dog, and when she could no longer breed due to her age, she was given up by her owner. She was 10 at the time, and was suffering with a chronic ear infection, which resulted in a build-up of scar tissue in her ears. She also had bad dental decay, and the vet had to pull most of her teeth.

Weaver

Because she has few teeth, her tongue tends to fall out the side of her mouth, which makes her all the more endearing! She had to be taught basic commands and had never been walked on a leash. “You CAN teach an old dog new tricks!” declares Megan.

WEAVER Weaver was rescued in 2013 as a baby kitten suffering from a severe upper respiratory virus that caused tissue adhesions to his eyes. After several eye surgeries, he can see quite well now. Since he needed so much medical care and is a very social kitty, he was appointed as the ambassador to Hands Helping Paws Inc. Weaver is affectionately known as the community’s cat, as volunteers take him to schools and events to help promote humane education. He also visits with residents at the Norman Veterans Center to provide comfort to the veterans.
