nothing more important to me than getting Marylanders back to work and getting our economy back on track. We are harnessing the full resources of state government to help Marylanders weather this storm. Our administration is working around the clock to secure critical resources for those who need it most, from grants that help local businesses produce PPE and specialized operations at our airports to hundreds of meal pickup sites for families in need. Since I first declared a state of emergency, I have said that

we’re all in this together, and Marylanders have shown us just that. Local distilleries have begun bottling hand sanitizer. Mom-and-pop restaurants are donating boxed lunches for healthcare workers. Networks of volunteers are delivering groceries and hot meals to seniors. And simply by staying home and heeding the advice of our public health experts, Marylanders truly are being heroes to their neighbors. I BELIEVE IN ME FOUNDATION

GIVING BACK

ARTICLE RHONDA STEPHENS

BRINGING HOPE AND INSPIRATION TO THE CHILDREN OF FREDERICK GOOD CAN COME OUT OF BAD. Speaking with Aje Hill, he will tell you his story of coming out of the dark to embrace hope and redemption. It could happen to anyone. He was from a loving home with a mom and dad. The boys were taught right from wrong and to stay away from those who could drag them down. The allure of what he calls the “lifestyle” spoke to him at a time when he began to believe the lies that he heard in his head. Bad choices over and over led to an eight-year sentence in prison. It was during this time in prison that Aje began to confront the person he had become. Broken and lying in his bunk, he was unable to move when he heard a voice speaking to him that said, “You don’t believe in me, but I believe in you.” Those words echoed in Aje’s heart, and he began to process what he’d heard. For the next three years, Aje repeated those words over and over, “I believe in me!” until he did believe. Aje brought this hope back to Frederick by founding I Believe In Me, a nonprofit that features after-school programs and summer events for children in the area. I Believe In Me provides mentors and friends to help guide the youth toward becoming contributing members of society. Aje had many people speak life into him while he disrespected them. Alderman Derek Shackelford, as his basketball coach in high school, was one of them. Alderman Shackelford said, “I’ll never give up on you because I believe in you!” Words are powerful, and words matter. Today, he is his mentor and best friend. 10

Frederick Lifestyle | June 2020

Erin Roelke is the President of the I Believe In Me Foundation and sits on the ten-member Board of Directors. As a middle school teacher, Erin sees bad choices happening before her very eyes. That’s why I Believe In Me is close to her heart. Erin says, “I Believe In Me plays a vital role in these kids’ lives by providing tutors and mentors and a place for these children to go for a free after-school program open to Frederick youth between the ages of 6-16. I Believe In Me inspires and challenges the kids to become respectful, impactful and productive members of society. We know our program works because we’ve seen the successes.” “We welcome volunteers,” Erin explains. “No matter when or how often you volunteer, please make sure you’re consistent. The kids look forward to coming and working with you, and we don’t want to disappoint them.” Anyone interested in becoming a volunteer can email Erin Roelke at ibm.eroelkee@gmail.com or visit the website. www.ibelieve-in-me.com

I’ve worked parttime in restaurants since I was 14 years old, so I had a lot of restaurant experiences before I opened Monocacy Crossing.” Growing up in Catonsville, Maryland, Chef Rich attended Loyola High School, where he thrived playing lacrosse. He attended Towson University on a lacrosse scholarship majoring in business. At the same time, Rich was honing his skills in restaurants in and around town. After graduation, Chef Rich found himself in sales but he eventually returned to the

In the oft debated question, is grilling with charcoal better than gas grilling, Chef Rich says it’s charcoal all the way! “When I’m at home, I always use charcoal. It gives great flavor and finish. One thing that’s important when using charcoal is having patience. To light, it takes about an hour and a half before it arrives at the perfect temperature. If you can hold your hand over the grate for more than five seconds, it’s not hot enough!”

OUR TOWN

D U S T O F F YO U R FREDERICK COUNTY SPIRIT! READY, SET, GO!

I’M NOT GIVING IN TO FEAR, AND NEITHER SHOULD YOU. Frederick County is such an incredibly special place. Unmatched natural beauty surrounds us. We eat at restaurants managed by skilled culinary artists. We drink in warm local watering holes, and we shop in small specialty retail stores owned by friends and neighbors. Our health needs are served by a world-class healthcare system. Our first responders are brave and selfless in ways that are best defined in times like these. We drive past some of the most advanced life science research facilities in the world. We’re entertained by

talented visual and performing artists, in theaters or just walking through our towns. Our news comes to us from a great daily newspaper and from other outstanding print and broadcast media sources that inform and entertain us. We have abundant recreational opportunities and an agricultural industry that feeds and sustains us. The COVID-19 pandemic is undoubtedly a threat. It’s a threat to our vulnerable neighbors, a threat to our economy and a threat to our way of life. But this threat is limited to how we react to it, and how much of our internal conscience we yield to it. Frederick County has always stood up to the toughest threats. A civil war, floods, economic downturns, and even racial intolerance have tested our collective community resolve but have never broken our spirit. It’s that spirit, the pride, joy and love of who we are and what we have, that we need to call on today. The fear, uncertainty and frustration that COVID-19 has forced upon us all WILL eventually wane. At that point, we’ll need every ounce of Frederick County Spirit we can muster to bring about our renaissance, our rebirth. We’ll emerge from behind our masks and out of our homes to shop, eat, drink and dance. Maybe we’ll initially be a bit more reticent, hesitant to hug, kiss and shake hands. That’s completely understandable.

But our friends in those stores, bars, and restaurants will need Frederick County Spirit more than ever. Those farmer’s markets, breweries, distilleries and wineries will need a serious injection of our Frederick County Spirit. We’ll need to go out to Harry Grove Stadium to shake our Keys with Frederick County Spirit. Our churches, synagogues,

mosques and temples will need to be filled with spirit, both the Frederick-kind and the holier versions. All of our great local events will need huge turnouts of Frederick County Spirit, from In the Street to Railroad Days. We’ll need to engage our Frederick County Spirit to celebrate First Saturdays and Live at Five concerts, even if we need to stand a little farther apart. Fear is an awful emotion. It debilitates, it discourages, and it diminishes our inner joy. The perfect antidote to fear is Frederick County Spirit. That special, hard-to-define emotion that inspires us to be our best selves, to stretch out a hand (gloved or not) to a stranger, and to be generous to those who serve us. Let’s all dust off our Frederick County Spirit. Let’s be ready to hit the street as soon as they tell us it’s safe to do so. Let’s shop, eat and drink with that indomitable power of love, pride and purpose that has always defined Frederick County Spirit. I’ll see you out there! The Amazing Leadership of Woodsboro Bank

WITH NEARLY 40 YEARS IN THE BANKING INDUSTRY, STEVE HEINE, PRESIDENT AND CEO OF WOODSBORO BANK, SAYS, “WITH ALL OF THE MERGERS AND DIFFERENT CHANGES IN THE INDUSTRY, I’VE BEEN VERY FORTUNATE ALWAYS TO HAVE ENDED UP WITH GOOD ORGANIZATIONS.” He adds, “A few years ago, I decided I wanted to get back to my community. I began looking for opportunities in Frederick and was approached by a director from Woodsboro to interview for President and CEO. So, I put my hat in the ring!”

Frederick Lifestyle | June 2020

Woodsboro is truly a community bank. Steve says, “Many community banks like ours are working hard to stay independent. Our objective, our vision, is to be the best bank in central Maryland for our colleagues, clients, community and shareholders.” Having celebrated its anniversary in May, the bank has been serving Frederick County for 121 years. Steve says, “There are a lot of community banks like us, that work for those same four stakeholder groups, but there are newer or start-up banks that are born out of the objective of eventually being sold. I work very hard to balance those four so that we can be independent and be the community bank.” These have been extraordinarily trying times in many ways, particularly with many suffering financial losses. Steve and the team at Woodsboro Bank have worked within the community to offer assistance as able. There were several ways that the bank could help during the quarantine. Steve says, “We are continuing to be proactive in our outreach to our clients to make sure they and their investments were and are safe,” he says. Additionally, for those who requested it, the bank worked with clients to modify their loans, helping their cash flow over a 90-day period. “Another thing we spent a tremendous amount of time on was helping small businesses. The federal government offered help to small business owners with the Small Business Administration’s Paycheck Protection Program. It offered an SBA loan that could help businesses keep their workforce employed during the coronavirus (COVID19) crisis. In a matter of three weeks, we had gone from doing very little with the SBA to building an entire process that ultimately led to the approval of PPP loans for nearly 150 clients. This is a $349 billion program that the SBA put in place and are using banks as the conduit for the program,” says Steve. Steve has a big heart for the Frederick community. He Steve and Carole Heine

says, “It’s important we all understand that this is temporary and have faith that this will end, and we will have a new normal. We need to work together, and by working together, we will be successful in this new normal. I center my life around family, friends, faith and community. What I

Business owners spend countless hours volunteering and serving on boards and committees to the betterment of Frederick and its citizens. It’s never been more vital than today, to THINK LOCAL; patronizing the shops and services that in days past, would presumably have open doors. It’s time to rally the troops and show up for the Frederick business community and thank them for being there!

CEO COSULTING ceocosulting.com Rob Nickey knows that many small business owners may need a hand or a bit of guidance to get their businesses on a firm footing or to go to the next level. With that in mind, Rob launched CEO CoSULTING. Drawing from his 25 years of financial and strategic planning expertise and his passion for small business, Rob works with the client by coming alongside the leaders to help them identify the critical issues within the company. He also helps business owners become familiar with their income statements and balance sheets, enabling them to make better and more informed decisions. Rob says, “There is no one person who has all the answers. I can’t solve a business’ issues, but I can sit with leadership, decision-makers, and sometimes the staff, to collaborate on the problems at hand and help them move forward.”

audiovideogroup.com “I have been in the audio-video field for years and started my own business because I wanted to focus on relationships,” says Eric Johnson, Founder and President of AudioVideo Group. “We do both large and small work. For me, if we do it right by developing the relationships, then the rest will follow,” adds Eric. He and his team are genuinely part of the community. “We’re continuing to help the Mental Health Coalition with donations of diapers and wipes, and are continuing to give to the Rescue Mission and Religious Coalition.” Eric is a member of the Carroll Creek Rotary, and he and his wife are members of the Order of the Good Samaritan for FMH. As a corporation, Audio-Video Group is a member of the Honor Roll at FMH.

learning curve for everyone when it comes to disinfecting and staying healthy,” says Jason Lee, CEO of Lee Building Maintenance. “At this point, cleaning technicians have to be educators. We used to make sure the building was clean by appearance and sanitized. Now, that’s all changed as we understand the disinfecting process. The world is going to look at cleaning totally differently,” Jason says. He and his team have been serving the area for many years and know the community well, and says, “Frederick has always been a community that could rise to the occasion.” We certainly have!

TLIC MEDIA tlicmedia.com For Chris Hiltz of TLIC Media, it’s more than just creating beautiful wedding videos. “It’s the connection to the day and the couple. I’m so proud that we can offer the amenities of a larger company but still provide a very personal experience,” Chris says. TLIC Media is merging with a photographic company to provide the complete experience from start to finish. He says, “This is the perfect complement to our video and production end.” Along with growth comes challenges, but Chris says the open schedule has given him time to focus on the merger and position the company well for the soon to be busier than ever fall wedding season. “This fall will be jam-packed because everyone had to adjust their wedding dates, so there will be multiple weddings per week, but we are ready,” he adds.

FOR THOSE WHO ARE MET WITH KIND, CARING EYES AT THEIR HOSPITAL BEDSIDE. For those who find a helping hand. For those who receive a mask made with love. To those who cut and craft and rally the troops. To those who generously provide hot, fresh meals for our doctors, nurses and first responders. To those who pick up and deliver with a gentle smile. To those who listen and help to calm the fears. To those who courageously serve on the front lines. We are forever grateful.
