SMART, RESOURCEFUL INVESTING STRIKE A BALANCED, COMPREHENSIVE FINANCIAL PLAN ARTICLE JULIE BROWN PATTON

16

Lake Murray Lifestyle | November 2019

AS THE END OF ANY YEAR APPROACHES, MANY PEOPLE START TO EXAMINE THE “HEALTH” OF THEIR FINANCES MORE CLOSELY, WONDERING WHAT ADJUSTMENTS WOULD BE PRUDENT. Kenneth Calcutt’s team of experienced advisers at Cornerstone Financial Management, LLC, in Columbia stand ready to assist with the full spectrum of customized financial planning. “We offer thorough financial and investment assessments and strategies to our clients based on their individual situations, goals and objectives,” Ken says. “Putting our clients’ best interests first is always our own first step. Regardless of circumstances, we take the time to understand our clients’ situations so we can give them what we believe is the best direction for what they’re trying to accomplish.” As the founder of the company with a degree in finance, Ken is a South Carolina native who understands the many considerations of living, working and retiring in the region. After starting in the financial planning industry in 2004, Ken launched his own practice in August 2014. The company currently employs four licensed financial advisers, one licensed financial adviser assistant and four support staff members. “Our mission is to glorify God by providing sound, comprehensive financial advice that’s consistent with our ethical standards, as well as the biblical model for financial management,” says Ken, who affiliates with LPL Financial, one of the nation’s leading financial service provider platforms, and Good Life Advisors LLC as the Registered Investment Advisory firm. Cornerstone clients can receive financial services in the following sectors:

+ Comprehensive financial planning + Retirement income planning + Investment management + College planning • Estate planning However, Ken says this time of year starts to spotlight what’s needed for the upcoming tax season. “Tax planning might seem like a separate entity, but in many ways, it goes hand in hand with financial planning as a whole. While it has its own distinct elements, the impact of your taxes is evident throughout the rest of your financial pursuits. This includes your investments, as well as your plans for the future,” Ken says. “When it comes to personal finance, each area is related to the others. As such, putting together an effective tax plan requires knowledge of the other aspects of your finances. The right professionals can help you save money while also helping you make good decisions across the board.” CornerstoneColumbia.com 803.462.4396

“SAVING ON TAXES ISN’T ALWAYS A SIMPLE PROCESS. TO GUIDE YOU IN THE MOST EFFECTIVE MANNER POSSIBLE, YOUR TAX EXPERT SHOULD KEEP THE BIG PICTURE IN MIND. IT’S POSSIBLE TO COME UP WITH TAX-SAVING METHODS WITHOUT KNOWING ABOUT THE OTHER ASPECTS OF YOUR FINANCES, HOWEVER, THE OUTCOME MIGHT NOT BE WHAT YOU DESIRE.” –KENNETH CALCUTT, CFMC, FOUNDER, CORNERSTONE FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT, LLC

ne Stone at a Time LAKE MURRAY ROCK ARTISTE INSPIRES PURE GRATITUDE IN OTHERS

WHO KNEW TINY, COLORFUL DOTS ON ROCKS COULD MAKE SO MANY PEOPLE SMILE? For the past three years, people across the United States have been enjoying little labors of love created by a local artiste who gets inspired by a rocky canvas—literally. Deborah Haltiwanger must see dots in her sleep because there are usually only two or three evenings each month during which she’s not dot-painting rocks to hide for other’s enjoyment. “Deborah’s Mandalas,” which are rocks of various colors and sizes she paints with intriguing geometric configurations, are found in local parks, alongside office sidewalks, inside malls, on boats, at beaches and outside restaurants—even showing up as far away as California and in Oregon with a rugby team! On the back of each rock are instructions: “When found, post picture to Lake Murray SC Rocks on Facebook—Deborah. Keep or rehide. You decide.” And, finders are glad to oblige by sharing their decisions online. Yet, the woman who creates these little treasures never painted artistically before picking up rocks to adorn. GIVING BACK

(CON TI N U ED)

I paint rocks merely to make people happy.” –Deborah Haltiwanger, creator of Deborah’s Mandalas “It all started when my granddaughter found a painted rock and told me, ‘You could do this,’” Deborah recalls. “I can’t draw a stick figure, and I’d never painted before, but well, I thought and thought about it and decided maybe I could decorate rocks.” Deborah tried her hand at painting a stone, was quickly hooked, and hid her first rock in Gilbert Community Park. Her rocks got so popular, she had to start hiding them at night so people wouldn’t just follow her around during the day while she hid them. “I paint merely to make people happy. I’ve now been asked to do other art projects, but the mandalas are the only things I can do,” she adds, indicating that she’s not trying to be famous or attract recognition. Because Deborah now paints hundreds of rocks annually, they come from a variety of sources. People give them to her, she finds some, they are collected from around the lake, she goes to landscaping companies to hand-select them, and she even orders them from online. She says she’s also taken to sometimes making her own faux rocks from a cement-like mix and silicone molds. Indeed, she has to make enough painted rocks to send boxfuls of them with another granddaughter who attends Winthrop University in Rock Hill and who likes to hide them all over campus. Asked how much money she invests in these special painted pebbles, she says, “Oh, Lordy, I quit counting. It’s a lot. But if the mandalas make someone smile, it’s all worth the cost.” As a community happiness volunteer, Deborah’s been known to even mail some mandalas to those who cannot physically get outdoors and look for them anymore. “Through these rocks, we all become friends for life,” she says. After all, the painted rock movement is about random acts of kindness and sharing a little piece of art with strangers. For Deborah, mandala rocks also are about making someone’s day brighter or sending a little message of encouragement without expecting anything in return. LakeMurraySCRocks (on Facebook Groups)

Fun Fact: The Kindness Rock Project was believed to be started in 2015 by Megan Murphy, who wrote, “You’ve got this” on a rock and left it on a Cape Cod beach. After a friend found it, Megan started leaving more rocks with inspirational messages in public places.

Lake Murray Lifestyle | November 2019

THE SPECTACULAR WEEKEND OF NOV. 7–10 PROVIDES A SPECIAL TIME TO GET A JUMP ON THE HOLIDAY SEASON BY SHOPPING LOCALLY WITH PARTICIPATING LEXINGTON BUSINESSES. Known as the annual Lexington Holiday Open House Tour, this year’s event is being handled by professionals at Midlands Media Group and the Greater Lexington Chamber & Visitor’s Center. Refreshments, door prizes and unique treasures await at participating stores and establishments during this weekend filled with sales and special deals—all geared toward getting everyone into the holiday spirit. Marie Stover, Midlands Media’s vice president of marketing and client services, says it’s the company’s first year to coordinate and promote the Holiday Open House. “We wanted to get involved because, we too, are a fellow business based in Columbia,” she says. “When Wally at Wingard’s Market asked us to take over coordinating this annual tradition, we were thrilled. As a locally owned media company, we believe in giving back to our community, and this is a great way to showcase a lot of local merchants as we kick off the holiday shopping season,” says Kirk Litton, Midlands Media’s managing partner. Kirk says they are supporting the Lexington Holiday Open House on all of their outlets: 93.1 FM The Lake, 94.3 FM The Dude and ColaDaily.com. Connor

Watkins,

the Greater Lexington Chamber & Visitor’s Center, says chamber representatives became the presenting sponsor of this event because they truly enjoy being advocates for local businesses. “During the holidays, local businesses can get overshadowed by Black Friday and Cyber Monday, but we all know that great deals can be found locally, rather than just online,” he adds. Following are the current 2019 participating merchants, with varying hours of operation. Check for new gift item ideas, raffles, promotions, gift wrapping and plenty of holiday cheer. THROUGH ONE DROP OF BLOOD, HEALTH PRACTITIONER BARBARA KERR CAN SHOW CLIENTS 20 POSSIBLE ANOMALIES IN THEIR INDIVIDUAL HEALTH. As a certified live blood cell microscopist and holistic health practitioner, Barbara offers from her downtown Columbia office the following health services: live blood cell analysis, T-Shock fat freezing, toning, cryofacials, ALCAT food sensitivity testing, BEMER micro-circulation therapy, BioMat far infrared therapy and nutritional counseling. “In the past, I spent 13 years as a patient, wanting to be a nurse. I was so ill and swallowing handfuls of pills,” recalls Barbara, who adjusted her overall approach when she discovered a booklet entitled Two Months to Live. “That’s when I learned more about what we put into our bodies is critical, that our health is not just about genetics,” she adds. Barbara’s nearly four-decade battle with Crohn’s disease forced and prompted her to learn firsthand about the human body’s various responses to food, beverages, fatigue, stress and overall health. Her personal experiences led to her passion for helping others who struggle with inflammatory bowel diseases, as well as people who desire to be healthier, in general. She says God opened some doors for her years ago, and she vowed to spend the rest of her life helping people get the health information and support that she, herself, desperately needed earlier in her life but couldn’t find. In business since 2014, Barbara offers practical, strategic approaches to health, incorporating nutrition, exercise, rest and the proper way to replenish bodies with water. “I focus on each person’s approach to life, rather than first focusing on one illness or specific parts of the body. Acting as an investigator, in a sense, holistic approaches consider the whole person, and how he or she interacts with his or her environment. It’s not to be confused with New Age alternatives, such as crystal gems, for their vibrations and proposed healing properties,” Barbara says. “Not every person responds in the same way, so it’s helpful to have more than a hammer in your health toolbox,” she suggests. Barbara now lives on a grain-free, gluten-free and dairy-free diet, drinking charcoal nightly and seeking simplified protein from grass-fed animals. “I do miss bread,” she confides. Regarding nutritional considerations, she created vegan/vegetarian cooking programs for Three Angels Broadcasting Network. She also authored two vegan/vegetarian Taste of Health cookbooks in 1999 and

2001. Additionally, she created and produced radio health programs that currently air on WBAJ-AM 890 in Columbia and other cities. She can be heard locally on WBAJ on Tuesday mornings from 11:45 a.m. to noon. Barbara organized and hosted cooking classes for church groups and community organizations. She’s also been the main speaker at Women’s Ministries conferences, in addition to giving health talks/demonstrations during month-long evangelistic crusades in Alexandria, Romania; and Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. For two weeks during November, Barbara will be in Pakistan to supply bibles and teach important health classes to local Pakistanis, such as how to clean and treat muddy water for drinking purposes. Interested in always giving back, Barbara hopes to change the world one bite at a time. MINISTRY WEBSITE: TasteOfHealth.net. TASTE OF HEALTH OFFICE WEBSITE: TasteOfHealth.biz.

“I FOCUS ON EACH PERSON’S APPROACH TO LIFE, RATHER THAN FIRST FOCUSING ON ONE ILLNESS OR SPECIFIC PARTS OF THE BODY.”

Barbara Kerr is a holistic health practitioner passionate about helping people eat to live healthier lives. After almost dying twice by age 29 from Crohn’s disease, Barbara completely changed her diet and lifestyle. Her determination begat a career including cookbooks, health classes, broadcast appearances and live blood cell analysis.
