Ashley Herber CAMPION ACADEMY YOU’LL BE ATTENDING WALLA WALLA UNIVERSITY IN WASHINGTON STATE THIS FALL. WHAT MADE YOU CHOOSE THIS COLLEGE? I knew that I wanted to go to a Seventh-Day day adventist college, and there are quite a few options in the United States. I visited a couple but I really liked Walla Walla because of the student atmosphere. I felt like I fit in, and the professors in the departments I’m interested in were really cool and piqued my interest. I also have a few friends that are going there with me as well. WHAT CAREER ARE YOU LOOKING AT POST-COLLEGE? I am thinking about going on to law school to become a lawyer. I currently work as a Legal Assistant at a law firm and the job is very interesting. I am also thinking about becoming a CPA, a teacher, or even an editor. My passion is writing, so whatever I end up doing I want to pursue some sort of a writing career, be it writing on the side or as my actual job. YOU’RE ALREADY A PUBLISHED AUTHOR! TELL ME MORE ABOUT THAT. It was in the Loveland Reporter-Herald. Our school is a boarding school, so we have a lot of students from across the world. There’s a lot of diversity on the boy’s soccer team and that is what the article focused on. It was really interesting, especially talking to students from across the world. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE VOLUNTEERING EXPERIENCE? I have played the piano for the children’s Bible school at Campion Church every week for the past four years and I absolutely love it. It’s honestly the highlight of my week sometimes because the kids there are so excited to sing and the leaders are very nice and welcoming. I just enjoy it and that’s why I do it. IF YOU COULD CHANGE ONE THING ABOUT YOUR COMMUNITY OR THE WORLD, WHAT WOULD IT BE? It would be people’s willingness to hear others out and see other’s sides. I think we would be able to achieve a lot more if we were able to work together and to listen to an opposing view. 20

Loveland & South Lifestyle | July 2020

Cooper Strong RESURRECTION CHRISTIAN SCHOOL (RCS) HOW DID BEING INVOLVED WITH THE KIWANIS AND ROTARY CLUBS IN HIGH SCHOOL IMPACT YOU? Having those opportunities so early in my high school career [freshman year], and knowing it was important to help those who are less fortunate than I am, I wanted to help people. I knew my work was helping others in need. Large groups like Rotary and Kiwanis are nationwide, so I can be a part of something that’s much larger than I am while helping on a close-tohome scale. DID YOUR VOLUNTEER SERVICE CHANGE YOU? It’s definitely changed my view on the people you see on the side of the street or just in general talking to friends and family. It broadened my ability to carry conversations even with people I don’t know. You never know where someone is or where they want to be. It’s important for people to express and get feedback on their thoughts. Sometimes people just need a friend that will listen and be compassionate about what they’re going through. WHO ARE YOUR ROLE MODELS? My parents are big role models for me. They’ve taught me to be compassionate and outgoing. Both of them have really set that standard in my life and I’m hoping to carry that on throughout college and when I become a parent. WHAT ARE YOU MOST EXCITED ABOUT FOR COLLEGE AND YOUR FUTURE? I’m going to Cal-Poly in San Luis Obispo. I’m excited to experience the California lifestyle, but also to learn about my major and hopefully turn that into a career in Construction Management. I’ve been around construction almost my whole life since my dad is a realtor. That piqued my interest in the past couple years and Cal-Poly offers such a great program and I pretty much knew that was my best option.

Fiona Bump BERTHOUD HIGH SCHOOL WHAT IS A FAVORITE MEMORY YOU HAVE FROM HIGH SCHOOL? I was involved in student council and an event we put on is the Prom Fashion Show. We ask local dress shops and tuxedo rental stores, and they donate dresses and tuxes. We have a runway show and silent auction, and all the money goes to the oncology department at the Children’s Hospital. Students, parents, and community members attend. It’s a nice way to give back to the community but it also lets us have a fun event for the students, too. WHAT MAKES YOU WANT TO GIVE BACK TO YOUR SCHOOL AND COMMUNITY? Probably how much Berthoud gives back in and of itself. It’s such a small community, and everyone knows everyone. If you are having a problem or are in crisis, there are so many people willing to help you out and be a shoulder for you to lean on. After all the help that Berthoud has given, it’s only right for me to want to give back to that and see what I can do to support my community as much as it supports me. HOW WILL YOU CONTINUE YOUR COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT AT COLORADO STATE UNIVERSITY? My goal is to get involved just as much as I did in high school and find things that I feel fit me, and give back to my community. They have Ambassador positions where they give tours and answer questions to incoming students. Once I gain that experience, I believe that would be a good thing to get involved in to share the knowledge. WHAT MAKES YOU PASSIONATE ABOUT BUSINESS MANAGEMENT? I’m passionate about leadership roles. I think management and marketing is definitely a good place for me. It’s a flexible, overarching career that I can pretty much put towards anything I want to.

OUR TOWN (CONTINUED)

Hallie Hill ROOSEVELT HIGH SCHOOL WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR GREATEST ACCOMPLISHMENTS IN HIGH SCHOOL? I have been involved in several clubs at Roosevelt High School including FCCLA (Family Career & Community Leaders of America), Interact Club, and National Honor Society, the latter of which I was president of my senior year. This year specifically, I was one of the three chosen students to a part of the “senior caravan committee” as well! During all four years of my high school career, I was on the Principal’s Honor Roll. I graduated third in my class of 245 students. WHAT ACTIVITIES HAVE YOU BEEN A PART OF IN YOUR LOCAL COMMUNITY? I have acquired over 300 hours of community service throughout my town and school! I am very involved in my local church, having gone on two mission trips, and have participated in their annual Vacation Bible School. I have volunteered at our public library for many hours and have helped package kits through our church for global distribution. WHAT COLLEGE DO YOU PLAN ON ATTENDING IN THE FALL OF 2020? I plan on attending the University of Colorado at Boulder in the fall, the same school that my twin sister is going to as well! WHAT WILL YOU BE MAJORING IN? I will be majoring in aerospace engineering with a minor in space! I also hope to receive an internship at Ball Aerospace in Boulder my sophomore year which would relate SO well to my major! WHAT MADE YOU CHOOSE THAT MAJOR? I chose aerospace engineering because I come from a long line of engineers. My father is a engineer for Xcel Energy as was my grandfather. My cousin is at CSU and has almost completed his engineering degree, too. I enjoy the skills that comes with engineering like working in groups and math (only when I get it). As for the space minor and aerospace, I have always been interested in the universe! Its mysteries and abnormalities, and taking a part in the last frontier of mankind are fascinating! WHAT JOB DO YOU HOPE TO LAND AFTER COLLEGE USING YOUR MAJOR? After college, I hope to be an engineer for NASA. I have always admired NASA’s work, and what they do absolutely astounds me. Some other options for employment would be Lockheed Martin, Ball Aerospace, or Martin Marietta! 26

HOW TO BEAT THE HEAT WITH THE COLORADO BOAT CENTER ARTICLE HANNAH ECHOLS | PHOTOGRAPHY FLOURISH BRANDING PHOTOGRAPHY

MEMORIES ARE THE BUILDING BLOCKS OF THE FUTURE. Cherished moments are recreated and repurposed so that loved ones can experience them season after season, year after year. The Smith family has grown a booming business off of this very premise. The Colorado Boat Company (CBC) was founded in 1988 by Tom Smith. He and his family have a history of being avid boaters and have spent countless weekends (and often, weekdays) out on the water. When the time came to get a new boat cover, it was outrageously expensive 28

“We look towards our customers and want to help them create those experiences,” Eric says. “They’re buying an escape when they buy a boat.” Northern Colorado has some of the best lakes in the state. Boyd Lake, Carter Lake, and Horsetooth Reservoir are great spots for people who are looking to capitalize on summertime fun. All three options are within an approximate 30 minute radius of each other. As the CBC says, staying close to home doesn’t mean that summertime is cancelled. “Once we were able to reopen during COVID-19, everyone seemed to realize that they could get outside!” Eric says. “Boats really are the best place to socially distance.” Even if the beaches are closed in some areas, Eric recommends finding ways to get on the water such as paddle boarding, off-shore fishing, and boating. If you’re not in a position to purchase a boat from the CBC, all three aforementioned lakes have rentals available on their respective marinas. Though this summer may feel differently due to the Coronavirus, you can still salvage the season. Unplug from technology and jump into the water. If you need a push, your family at the Colorado Boating Center is waiting to give you a hand.

THINK FISH AND CHIPS IS ONLY FOR BRITISH PUBS? Think again. Fish and chips can be a great simple weeknight meal you can make as simple or as fancy as you want. Want a more elegant dinner? Sautee’ the fish and roast some fingerling potatoes. Want all the crunch without the hassle of a deep fat fryer? Try coating the fish in breadcrumbs, pan-frying, and then oven roast or air fry the chips.
