other. It takes multiple pitches to harmonize, a variety of notes in the chord, more than those just singing “my note.” Here’s to creating rich, colorful, resonant chords in the days ahead. Speaking of chords: Remember Alanis Morissette? A distinctly raw voice, queen of angst, slayer of pretention and sexist biases, she mainstreamed being an angry, intelligent, clearvoiced young woman into winning five Grammys. While her latest album, "Such Pretty Forks in the Road," includes such strikingly raw moments as “Reasons I Drink” (an intimate perspective on addictions), it featured a delightful, spontaneously-uplifting song of family, “Ablaze.” Its performance on Jimmy Fallon's show was awesomely/perfectly invaded by her 3-year-old daughter Onyx; Alanis sang the entire song with daughter-in-her-arms, sweetly replying to each of her little one’s precocious invasions in a heartwarming way. (View it here: bit.ly/AlanisAblaze). It’s a click-to-feel-better moment for sure.

Gives Students “Elite Edge” Through Virtual Tutoring ARTICLE MARISSA PLESCIA

Dr. Sara Bourne (L) with SWL's Marissa Plescia, via Zoom.

LOOKING TO GIVE YOUR KIDS AN EDGE IN SOME OF THEIR TOUGHEST CLASSES? Read on. Barrington native Dr. Sara Bourne always pictured herself teaching chemistry in a big lecture hall at a university. Bourne earned her B.S. in Chemistry and Psychology at University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, and her M.S. in Chemistry and Ph.D.

Bourne’s education in psychology helps her teach science more effectively. “I love learning an individual student’s learning style, what they’re struggling with, and helping them bond with chemistry, for example, in whatever way suits them,” Bourne said. “Tutoring is a great way to do that, both one-to-one and with small groups.”

back out. I think that turns people away more than it attracts people to science. As an instructor, I need to acknowledge the student’s own experience and background, and realize that everybody’s going to bring something different, but everything is applicable. We should always find a connection.” Elite Edge Tutoring offers discounted packages (10 or 20 hours) for one-on-one and group tutoring. Group packages receive a 20% discount; one-on-one packages are discounted 10%. Individual sessions are available at $100 per hour. Bourne also offers a chemistry prep session for those interested in getting a head start. Bourne is working to expand her client base and gain more student relationships. She would also like to get more people involved in her chemistry prep class, to help those who are nervous about starting this new topic this fall. Long-term, she envisions growing an expanding group of tutors to create an increasingly holistic service to all students. “You could come to Elite Edge Tutoring and say, ‘I need help with chemistry, but can you also help me write my college entrance essays? Or, ‘I need help with biology,’ and we have somebody who can help you with that,” Bourne said. Bourne believes it’s important for students to earn an “edge” in

THE PANDEMIC TRIGGERED MANY FOLKS INTO GAINING WEIGHT. HERE’S HOW ONE LOCAL BUSINESS HELPS PEOPLE SHED UNWANTED POUNDS.

16

SW Lake Lifestyle | October 2020

ARTICLE JASON RUTLEDGE

Losing the “Covid 19” MY BUSINESS PARTNERS AND I HAVE BEEN IN THE FITNESS INDUSTRY FOR YEARS. While we know that a regular exercise routine is critical for better health, we wanted to solve the missing piece: nutrition. We discovered Profile By Sanford, a weight loss and nutrition program created by Sanford Health. We jumped at the opportunity to open stores in Chicago and Deer Park, with more than 30 locations on the way in the Chicagoland area. Since Profile By Sanford is backed by science and Sanford Health, we found the right solution to help everyone lose weight. Our mission is to “change people’s lives, one relationship at a time.” Created by a multidisciplinary team of medical researchers, physicians and geneticists, Profile offers a comprehensive, evidence-based program that is backed by Sanford Health, an integrated health system based in Sioux Falls, SD. Debra Burkhardt, a consultant who works closely with Profile owners, spent most of her adult life overweight and now has worked hard to get to a point where she is happy with how she looks and feels. “We want our members to know this is a safe space to be honest and open, and to share the true reason why they are where they are,” Burkhardt said. “Our job is to help them get to where they want to be. Everything we do is geared to help establish good habits and behaviors… make one good choice at a time.” Some have said that the Covid “19” is the number of pounds some folks have put on since the start of the pandemic. The reality is the weight gain has been closer to 25 pounds. If you’ve put on weight, here are a few steps to take to help get things under control: 1. Since most of us are at home more—and just a few feet from the fridge and sitting more—get up and move. That means go for a walk and get exercise in your daily routine. 2. Stay hydrated and drink more water versus other beverages to cut calories and help with hydration. 3. Eat more veggies. If you feel hungry, think more about your snacking. With a little planning, you can eat more veggies, feel fuller and get tons of vitamins and fiber versus other snacks.

SW Lake Lifestyle | October 2020

“Profile begins with the ‘why’,” according to Burkhardt, meaning the reason why a member might want to start living a healthier life. One member may want to become a healthier wife and mother, so she can spend more meaningful time with her family. Another might seek more energy, deeper sleep, and a more positive outlook on life. Yet another might want to pursue a more active and adventurous lifestyle, such as hiking, biking, or taking up a new sport. No matter the ‘why’, everybody’s journey is personal and unique. We all know someone who has been impacted by weight gain. Most of us also know that feeling when we just are not at our best. It is hard to put into words the feeling I have when someone finally, for the first time in 20, 30 or even 40+ years has gotten the weight off and is keeping it off. The joy is not about the weight lost, but about the life that this person has gotten back. Profile By Sanford is about helping you regain your life—through nutrition, accountability and support. Seeing someone get their life back and experience everything they have missed makes this worth it. When a member joins Profile By Sanford, he or she is essentially part of a family devoted to wellness. Each member receives a personalized program built around nutrition, activity and lifestyle coaching, designed to help lose weight and keep it off. After gaining an in-depth understanding of a member’s goals, health history and lifestyle, Profile creates a weight-loss plan to meet the member’s specific needs, including any significant medical issues or concerns. So how does a nutritional plan help somebody versus just purchasing meals? The foods we sell are only tools. We create a personalized plan to help each person meet their goals and teach what it means to eat healthily, control portions, and do what is best for your body. Everyone’s journey is different, but you can expect to see significant weight loss over time. We Profile Chicken Bowl.

guarantee that you can lose 15% of your body weight in 12 months. Better yet, we will help you keep it off and eliminate dieting. Jason Rutledge is co-owner of Profile By Sanford in Deer Park Town Center, 20330 N. Deer Park Blvd., Suite 130. Learn more at ProfilePlan.com or call 224.633.1486.

Go to the “dark side” with this design that requires matte black paint, white paint, some metallic paint (for an out-ofthis-world vibe) and some newspapers. Be careful—this one could get messy!

+

Leave your stems natural or cover with metallic paint if desired. Then, coat your mini pumpkins in matte black paint— be sure to cover everything!

+

You can leave some matte black, but for an extra touch, lay out newspaper and splatter your white paint onto some of your black pumpkins. Bonus—as long as you catch it before it dries, any paint should be easily removed with some warm water.

Start with several mini pumpkins. (We prefer to use fake ones so you don’t have to worry about leaving them out too long!) You’ll also need some white paint, metallic paint and black paint. Twine is optional to add a slightly rustic vibe to the stems.

Paint all of the stems with black paint and wrap some with twine if desired. Then, create several different looks with combina-

tions of metallic and flat paint. Make extra creepy “oozing” pumpkins by allowing paint to run down the sides.

Don’t feel limited to solid colors! Experiment here with different patterns and textures (like painting over lace or using a sponge to apply paint instead of a brush), and add some extra sparkle with glitter!

Dave Muller, Jr. of Muller Exteriors in Lake Zurich used the pause to enhance the outside of their building near Illinois Route 22 and Rand Road. “We re-did our color scheme and logo to be more consistent with our branding. We realized that we could take the opportunity of some down time to re-present ourselves to the community driving by our front door every day.” In Deer Park, Bonnie Conte’s Avalon Salon & Spa was refreshed, too. Treatment areas got new furnishings and work areas were spread out to ensure proper physical distancing of customers and stylists once the green light was given to return to work. Mauricio Romy, owner with his wife, Angela, of Happki, a Deer Park toy store, pivoted quickly to add more functionality to the company website. By pouring more time and energy into the website the Romys were able to generate much-needed revenue while their retail store was closed. Mollee Johnson of Style 1519, an interior design firm, said when the news broke about the pandemic her first thoughts were “fear and not knowing what the future held. Mollee Johnson, of Style 1519.

mortar business, once she got virtual design meetings up-and-running it made a real difference. “Typically, my summers are slow, and I pick back up when school starts,” Johnson said. “My clients, like the rest of us, are now home more. They want to make changes and redesign home spaces to work better for them. They’ve reacted positively to our virtual design meetings.” Like any other business, Johnson, Muller and Difino all hewed to the new guidelines for re-opening.

“Selling your home during these times (June 2020) can be challenging. Renee’s expertise took all of the worry and work out of the process. She helped us professionally stage, photograph and market our home at the highest level. Renée knew as much as us about our home and could share the wonderful ways we used our home over the years with the buyers. We had a few occasions that we needed Renée for a special request and she never hesitated to come to our aid.” - S.F.
