A New Decade is Around the Corner HISTORIANS SAY IT’S THE SONG THAT NOBODY KNOWS, AND YET WE’VE ALL TRIED TO SING IT. “Auld Lang Syne” is the title of a 1788 Scottish poem by Robert Burns, typically sung immediately after the stroke of midnight on New Year’s Eve. The phrase “Auld Lang Syne” translates to “old long since,” so as an appropriate toast for the new year, people tend to start singing “let’s drink to days gone by.” And time sure has flown by this year as we can’t believe we’ve put together the final issue of Northwest Bergen Lifestyle for 2019! It seems like just yesterday I was sitting down to

write my January letter to all of you and yet, here we are, almost time to do it again. While we certainly don’t want to wish our lives away, we’re always looking toward the future. So, for now, we’re going to slow down a bit and enjoy December, the very last month of the decade! Don’t fight the traffic and the hustle and bustle of the season. “Keep it local” by checking out our Lifestyle Calendar to see what’s happening minutes from your home. The end of the year is always a time to reflect on the actions we have taken to help the less fortunate. Well, the year is not over yet, so take a moment to read about the Center for Food Action in Mahwah and hopefully, you will be inspired to get involved. When

Christmas Elegant Rustic centerpiece, by Wyckoff Florist & Gifts
WYCKOFF FLORIST & GIFTS HAS BEEN A WYCKOFF INSTITUTION SINCE ROSE FERNANDEZ OPENED IT BACK IN 1964. Dottie Van Der Horn began working for Rose in 1976, and although she left temporarily, she returned to work under Rose in 1995 and eventually took over in 2013. The charming shop offers a wide selection of fresh wreaths, door swags, grave blankets and gift items for the holiday season.

ARUBA New Year’s Eve in Aruba means a night of endless firework shows everywhere you turn, restaurant specials to enjoy and many parties to attend! When you stay at a preferred resort, you’ll never forget where you were on New Year’s Eve 2020. This beautiful Dutch-Caribbean island offers a wide range of activities for couples as well as families. Activities that require a bit of training and energy include snorkeling and diving as well as off-road tours on ATVs. Of course, relax in the sun on Aruba’s most glorious beaches (lots of white sand and palm trees) including Manchebo Beach, Eagle Beach and Palm Beach.

Take to the water on a luxury yacht or take a charter boat tour. Perhaps a pirate ship tour in the afternoon? How about getting on those hiking boots and explore Arikok National Park or see the Quadiriki and Fontein caves? If you’re a golfer, fear not! Aruba offers some of the world’s best golf courses. At the northern tip of the island, you will find an 18-hole PGA-approved gem designed by Robert Trent Jones II, Tierra Del Sol. The Links at Divi Aruba, a nine-hole course open to the public, offers beautifully manicured fairways surrounded by indigenous vegetation.

G I F T S F O R G I V I N G SHOP LOCAL THIS HOLIDAY SEASON
STILL WORKING ON THAT HOLIDAY GIFT LIST, OR HAVEN’T EVEN GOTTEN STARTED? Never fear, the good news is our area has a plethora of shopping options for everyone on your list. We called on Sally St. Clair, owner of Run About Town, a personal concierge service based in Upper Saddle River, to help us find the perfect holiday gifts. “Some people think of gift shopping as fun, but many also think it’s stressful,” Sally says. When personal shopping for her clients, she encourages them to consider the recipient’s interests and lifestyle. “If your gift recipient loves the outdoors, that helps narrow down where you will shop,” she says. And she couldn’t be more excited about all of the small shops and boutiques Northwest Bergen County has to offer. “When shopping locally, you get personalized attention and help support local businesses.” Read ahead for some of her personal picks for the season. 20

LOCALLY OWNED GIVE BACK WHILE CHECKING OFF YOUR GIFT LIST
ALL IS WELL LOCATED ON EVERETT STREET IN WYCKOFF, ALL IS WELL WAS FOUNDED BY JAYNE GILBRIDE-BAUER IN 2009. Jayne was undergoing treatment for ovarian cancer when she first proposed her store’s concept to her future landlords in Wyckoff. Jayne was introduced to a similar store at the Hackensack University Medical Center while being treated there. She came to appreciate the unique relationships that bloomed among doctors and patients as they shopped for specialty items geared toward people undergoing cancer therapies. She soon began to advise the store on appropriate merchandise to carry. She later began the All is Well Foundation and store in order to raise support for a variety of nonprofit organizations, especially those that serve individuals dealing with a cancer diagnosis. Jayne’s niece and store manager, Catherine Perna Saum, worked side-by-side with her aunt to help carry out her dream. In November 2013, just a few months before Jayne lost her battle with the disease, Catherine took over the shop and foundation. She now manages the volunteers, purchases inventory and consigns items created by local artists. “Jayne always lived her life as a very positive and encouraging person,” Catherine says. “When you met her, you would never think she had cancer. The store is stocked with inspirational gifts and carries many specialty items appropriate for individuals navigating a cancer diagnosis. Candles are all soy, and the shop carries a variety of non-toxic toiletry items and essential oils. “We carry an extensive line of beautiful hats and headscarves, which is unique for a brick-and-mortar store. Some gift lines such as Mudpie and Demdaco are sold below suggested retail price as an extra incentive to shoppers. Gift wrapping is complimentary. The challenges of running a volunteer organization in a retail space are real. “Retail life is a struggle. We operate with only volunteers, and we don’t have a big budget. Getting shifts covered with volunteers is a challenge year-round,” Catherine says.
