NEW WEST SYMPHONY Grant money was given to the performing arts organization‘s Laby Harmony Project, which supports Ventura Unified School District low-income students in third grade and up with music training and performance opportunities.

PADRES JUNTOS Part of the League of United Latin American Citizens, the oldest and largest national Hispanic civil rights organization in the U.S., Padres Juntos aims to educate Englishlanguage learning families through trainings in an effort to become an advocate in their disadvantaged community and for systemic changes in the Oxnard School District. In Oxnard, 93% of students in Grades K-8 are Latino. “(Padres Juntos) educates the parents who are non-English speaking to help their children navigate into a school system,” says Teasdale. “They make sure if their kids want to go through college that they become effective advocates for their children’s education.”

The organizations were awarded their grants at SJFVC’s annual “Celebration of Social Activism” event in October at Studio Channel Islands in Camarillo. Studio artists also donated their art along with silent and live auctions.

“That event was a celebration of social activism, to celebrate the grantees and acknowledge them and create a celebration for the community,” says Martinez-Bravo.

Teasdale says the board will soon start researching a new social justice theme for 2020.

“As a director, it is important for me to bring world-class talent to the Conejo Valley,” says Kim Maselli. “Bringing these celebrity dancers to our stage educates and inspires our patrons. It can also spark the dream for our community dancers to pursue careers of their own. Seeing these accomplished professionals up close encourages our dancers to realize their own dreams are attainable.”

These dreams come with a lot of hard work, talent and dedication. Pacific Festival Ballet’s training school, California Dance Theatre, has been a thriving arts organization in the community since 1985. The CDT curriculum offers classes in all dance forms for preschool children through adults. It also offers a Pre-professional Training Program for the serious-minded student wishing to pursue ballet as a career.

“As in most art forms,” says Patrick Frantz, ballet master and former dancer with Paris Opera Ballet, “it takes about 10 years of training to refine your skills and artistry. You need to have talent and a deep passion from within to keep driving you forward.”

Talent and passion abound at Pacific Festival Ballet. Over the past 25 years a multitude of dancers have gone on to professional careers and attribute their success to training, performing opportunities and mentoring from their instructors.

WE HEAR SO MUCH ABOUT BEING HAPPY. “Happy” is one of the favorite songs of many, myself included. It truly makes me feel happy when I hear it, but is that actual happiness? I ask you, are you happy?

We all sometimes reflect on our life at different stages, asking ourselves if we are happy.

Sometimes it depends on the day or situation. Is happy a day by day situation? It’s definitely a feeling. Is it situational or controlled by the weather? Can you start off happy and then have your day hijacked? Maybe it's about how much you accomplished that day, or that week, or in your life so far.

As this year ends and the new one approaches, take a moment to count your blessings and think about what makes you happy.”
