Anyone familiar with the demographic spread of these locations will quickly understand that his patient base is diverse. He told us that his African American patients are often very reluctant to come to the surgical center in Beverly Hills. Why? Certainly not because it is a dangerous neighborhood. Quite the opposite, of course. It is highly affluent with a very low crime rate. What makes them reluctant is a fear of confrontation by locals because “they do not belong there.” To hammer this point home even further, this morning I woke up to an article from The Washington Post that reinforces this very

Trident Health Group: Helping Men Live their Best Lives TRIDENT HEALTH GROUP IN THOUSAND OAKS OFFERS A REVOLUTIONARY ERECTILE DYSFUNCTION TREATMENT CALLED AWT, OR ACOUSTIC WAVE THERAPY, SHOWN TO PRODUCE LONG-LASTING RESULTS THAT ENABLE IMPROVED SEXUAL PERFORMANCE. Free from pills, needles and side effects, the treatment provides a safe, effective alternative to Viagra, Cialis and other oral ED medications. It is suitable for men of all ages dealing with ED. An official provider of the Primewave AWT Protocol, Trident Health Group’s staff of doctors and technicians are trained by the founders of this revolutionary protocol. They collectively bring over 40 years of experience in the medical arena, and more than 20 years of treating erectile dysfunction, working with more than 40 ED clinics across the United States. Here, they provide insight into this incredible new treatment. Q. WHAT IS AWT? A. Acoustic Wave Therapy, AWT, is a safe, proven and noninvasive treatment for erectile dysfunction incorporating acoustic shock waves to improve blood flow and enhance sexual performance. Q. WHAT IS THE TRIDENT HEALTH GROUP PROTOCOL? A. Trident Health Group employs the Primewave AWT Protocol utilizing a highly accurate medical device developed in Germany. It is cleared by the Food and Drug Administration for use on the human body for soft tissue repair, improved blood flow, and a few other uses. Our practice only uses the equipment according to our established best practice protocol for ED treatment, and is precisely calibrated to meet the guidelines of the Trident Health Group Protocol. Q. HOW DOES THE PROCEDURE WORK? A. The procedure uses low-intensity, high-frequency, pulsating, acoustic shock waves to break up micro-plaque in existing blood vessels and promote growth of new vessels and erectile tissue (Corpus Cavernosum). This treatment tackles the underlying cause of erectile dysfunction—poor blood flow—and permits for increased sensitivity with stronger and more natural erections.

SOME CANCER TREATMENTS POSE RISKS TO THE HEART, FORCING MANY PATIENTS INTO A FEARFUL STATE OF PERPLEXITY OVER WHAT TO DO IN THIS DIFFICULT SITUATION. “Often, all the information with a new diagnosis of cancer seems overwhelming, but we are here to help and guide you through your journey,” says Dr. Megha Agarwal, a non-invasive cardiologist with UCLA Health in Ventura and Thousand Oaks with a sub-specialty in women’s heart disease and cardio-oncology. “Even in survivorship where you want to put cancer in your rearview mirror, the road ahead may have steep turns and bumps,” Dr. Agarwal says, “but navigating them not knowing they are there is way worse than being prepared.” 34

Some of the most potent, cancer-killing chemotherapies can make the heart muscle weak, causing cardiomyopathy, a disease of the heart muscle that makes it harder for your heart to pump blood to the rest of your body. “That can sometimes occur during therapy or many years after,” Dr. Agarwal notes.

“Sometimes, it’s a good idea to pursue heart fitness even before you start cancer therapies,” Dr. Agarwal affirms. HEART MATTERS POST-CANCER (CONTINUED)

Dr. Megha Agarwal

When it comes to heart fitness after people undergo chemo or radiation, it’s also important to avoid leaving their risk factors untreated. For instance, blood pressure should be adequately controlled with medications—the same for cholesterol and diabetes. “Additionally, they should avoid long gaps in their care and always be in touch with a physician at least once a year,” Dr. Agarwal suggests. “It’s hard sometimes in our busy lives to take time out for ourselves and our health, but oftentimes we see patients present with years of uncontrolled risk factors with heart disease that could have been prevented.” As far as the time it takes to establish heart fitness after undergoing chemo and radiation is concerned, this depends on the therapy, “but some cancer drugs can cause issues during the course of therapy while others may cause issues five, 10 or even 30 years later,” she says. One of the reasons Dr. Agarwal went into cardiology is because as a cardiologist, “you have so many tools in your tool belt,” she adds. “From prevention, medications, to stents and non-surgical valves, pacemakers, surgery, stem cells, and even heart transplant; there are many ways to treat heart disease,” Dr. Agarwal says. “Even if there is a complication with the heart with your cancer therapy we have so many strategies to fix it. It’s only hopeless if you don’t ask and know your options.”

STOWELL Learning Center How YOU Can Make This School Year Better For Your Struggling Learner and Your Family

“It’s Really Hard For Any Parent to Admit That Their Bright Child May be Struggling in School…

Especially When You’re Not Sure What’s Really Wrong or How to Fix it” (Quote from a very successful dad of 4 children)

You want to do the absolute best for your child... But when that child is bright and struggling, when that child should be doing better, when you wonder if they’re just lazy, or you wonder if somehow this is your fault, it becomes truly baffling…even “head-scratching.” (Then schools switched to remote sessions, and whatever was standing in the way of progress just got worse.) Now, kids feel defeated, and you as the parent have that feeling in the “pit of your stomach” wondering if you’re doing enough.

There really is hope. There are real and tangible reasons why some bright students struggle in school. And it’s NOT because they’re lazy, it’s NOT because parents haven’t done their part, and it’s NOT because schools don’t teach right. I’m Jill Stowell and for the last 36 years I’ve helped over 10,000 struggling students master the skills that make learning easy… ANY learning.

I’m talking about focused training on strengthening and making efficient the sometimes hidden skills that will allow your child to catch up or even surpass his or her classmates. And I’m talking about making these skills permanent and automatic. These are skills that 70% of the population develop naturally. For the other 30%, these skills can be trained.

We understand that not everyone will choose this option because it involves real investment.

The difficult truth is that schools and tutoring aren’t equipped to correct these kinds of challenges.

Everything we do is because it gets results. Students build permanent skills that lead to lifetime success.

What are these skills?

Our staff are experts at making sessions engaging and fun so that maximum progress is continuous.

I don’t have enough space here to fully explain. But if you want to give your child a real “leg up” in school (and get some peace of mind for yourself), let me encourage you to watch a short 30-minute explanation about these learning skills and why they’re so critical to school and life success. You can find it at:

That goes both for in-person and remote sessions. One more thing - It’s NOT an overnight process, but, unlike tutoring, it’s not a forever process either. We uncover the skills that need work and then build them.

StowellCenter.com/VideoOptin OR scan the QR code on this page

LOCAL NONPROFIT RAISES FUNDS VIRTUALLY FOR PEDIATRIC CANCER FAMILIES

WITH THE STATE MANDATE LIMITING LARGE GATHERINGS, THE BUMBLEBEE FOUNDATION, A LOCAL NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION SUPPORTING PEDIATRIC CANCER FAMILIES, WAS FACED WITH NEW FUNDRAISING CHALLENGES. Thinking outside the box has become the new normal for the Foundation’s volunteer Executive Board and Advisory Council members. Thus, came the idea to shift their annual in-person silent auction to a virtual platform. In doing so, their silent auction team has been working hard BEEhind-the-scenes for months procuring incredible items and packages to bid on, thanks to some amazing donors. On Nov. 2, the BumbleBee Foundation will be hosting their inaugural virtual silent auction, Transforming Your Generosity into Hope. Some of the featured auction items include luxury golf packages, fine jewelry pieces, decorative home embellishments, dining occasions and a variety of clothing accessories for the entire family. Bidders will be delighted by the extraordinary experiences available that will take them to new heights with free-flying macaws, walk them through the rainforest with a kinkajou ambassador, show them the reins with a day on the ranch, enchant them with a conversation with Winnie the Pooh and Tigger too, or whisk them away on a relaxing getaway! The BumbleBee Foundation was established in the memory of Jarren Donatini, who passed away at the age of 4 from a very rare form of liver cancer. During his 18-month battle, Jarren’s family was directly impacted by the overwhelming costs and emotional stress associated with caring for a pediatric cancer patient. Jarren touched the lives of many, but the families that rallied around him and his family, providing love, faith and hope during a time of great need, left such a profound impact that his parents immediately knew they were called to start an organization that would offer this same attitude of love and support for all families suffering from pediatric cancer.

A Wo r l d A w a y, C l o s e to Home: TWO HARBORS, CATALINA ISLAND

ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY MELISSA CURTIN

Conejo Valley Lifestyle | October 2020

MERE MINUTES AFTER BOARDING THE CATALINA EXPRESS FROM SAN PEDRO, A WHALE BREACHED TO REMIND US OF LIFE BELOW THE SURFACE. Not even whale season, the majestic creature gave us a show with five more sprays through its blowhole. Enlivened is an understatement, as the pandemic has taught me to appreciate nature even more and the ability to move safely during a pandemic seems like the new luxury. After an hour riding along with the glistening spray in the outdoor back corner of the boat with our masks on, it seemed we had arrived in a new land or even a new country—Catalina Island to be exact, but not the major harbor of Avalon that feels like entering a small town on the Amalfi coast. Our Catalina Express boat slid into the quieter Two Harbors, dotted with sailboats and aquamarine water so clear it seemed pointless to even snorkel. Visibility can be almost 40 feet. Off to the left of the harbor, cabins and camping dot the rugged hillside while kayakers and stand-up paddle boarders glide around the coastline. Teens proudly show off their catch on the docks while visitors relax under shaded cabanas and aqua umbrellas in the sand. Palm trees sway in the breeze, invoking South Pacific vibes. Arriving in Two Harbors feels like a real summer day. Greeted by the hotel’s shuttle upon arrival, we are whisked up the hillside to the 100+ year old Banning House Lodge that overlooks the isthmus and the two harbors. It quickly becomes apparent that there may not be anywhere else as wonderful to stay on the west coast during a pandemic than this 12-room Craftsman-style lodge. My ears are delighted with the property’s silence and birdsong. Just 22 miles away from the mainland, the fresh air and constant breeze is beyond welcome. Surrounded by nature on all sides, Banning House Lodge is the only hotel in Two Harbors. Built in 1910 by the Banning brothers, the Lodge has served many purposes—as the U.S. Coast Guard officers’ quarters during WWII, as a private girls camp in the late 1950s, a hunting lodge, and as employee housing. Each morning our pre-ordered breakfast is delivered to our room at a specified time due to the pandemic and, surprisingly, we have the entire terrace overlooking one of the harbors all to ourselves. Dining with my husband here feels like we own the place and have been transported to a cacti-laden New England home of my childhood memories. The hotel’s charm becomes clear. Banning House Lodge is not trying to be something it’s not. No major upgrades for vanity or Instagram, the hotel is unapologetically original. Inside the main lodge with sweeping views, a fireplace, and local taxidermy (even the island’s buffalo), I imagine this area was most likely a social gathering place for guests prior to a virus invasion. Like an old hunting lodge, flashbacks of the hotel El Tovar at the Grand Canyon come to mind. After checking in, we immediately stroll the dirt path down to the other sparkling turquoise harbor where white sailboats deeply contrast Mediterranean-like water. Coastal sage scrub, manzanita and eucalyptus trees abound. Cacti with desert flowers of yellow and pink align our path, even cacti ears that look like Mickey Mouse. The sunlight casts shadows across the mountains and at the rocky beach, the steep terrain crumbles toward the ocean. Birds swoon in every direction and I feel free.

Due to the times, a bottle of wine is delivered with a cheese plate in the evening at Banning House Lodge, leaving the days of communal wine and cheese happy hour camaraderie in the distant past. It feels like the ultimate pleasure to watch the sunset on the terrace at the end of a satisfying day. Just us and the birds, and the occasional walker who hikes up to see the delicious views. One evening my brain is so soothed by the location I fell asleep reading a book in a chair, something that has never once happened to me in L.A. At dusk, the island’s largest endemic mammal makes an appearance, to our delight. Four petite foxes with little black noses prance around the terrace. Almost cat-like, the cute foxes appear tame. To my surprise I find one prancing in broad daylight while walking near the beach, just as curious of me as I of it.

Is it safe to travel to Catalina Island? Consider traveling mid-week to Catalina Island for an even quieter pace. Masks are required on the Catalina Express and rules are reinforced on the loudspeaker. We arrived early and sat in the corner outside with a breeze. The boat felt only half full because Catalina Express has reduced capacity for more distance between passengers. Physical distance markings are on the floor at the terminal and while waiting in line to board the vessel. Extra cleaning has been enacted between departures. High-touch surfaces are wiped down throughout the journey. High-grade disinfectants and multi-purpose cleaning are used in restrooms and surfaces while each evening a third-party cleaning service uses electrostatic spraying or “fogging on the vessels that is EPA-registered. Learn more on CatalinaExpress.com and VisitCatalinaIsland.com.  Also, my kayak was super sanitized by the company when I returned to shore. Masks are required in common areas at Banning House Lodge. Breakfast and wine and cheese are now delivered to your room but almost the entire time we had the terrace to ourselves, probably because many rooms come with their own terrace/porch. If you want to travel and be outdoors, this is the place!

Don’t Delay Your Mammogram THE WHOLE POINT OF PERFORMING A MAMMOGRAM IS TO DETECT CANCER AT ITS EARLIEST STAGE. During these “covidian” times many women have chosen to delay their annual mammogram based on recommendations provided by the American Society of Clinical Oncology in May of this year that stated “cancer screening mammograms and colonoscopy be postponed for the time being.” But, that also comes with an asterisk. “For patients who are at higher risk for breast cancer, for example those with a family history or those with a positive test for BRCA1 should not delay,” says Cathy Cole, NP, MPH, CHES, FNBC, Oncology Nurse Navigator for the Breast Program at Los Robles Health System. “COVID-19 should not be a deterrent for women who are at higher risk to get screened. Breast cancer won’t wait for the pandemic to end.” While delaying may be okay for some for a short time, omitting is not. It is likely that many women will omit their annual screening entirely, thinking that one year won’t

at S o u t h e r n C a l i f o r n i a V e i n C e n t e r MILLIONS OF AMERICANS ARE AFFECTED BY VARICOSE VEINS AND VENOUS INSUFFICIENCY. Symptoms range from minor aching and leg swelling to painful, rope-like cords in the legs. Left untreated, venous insufficiency can lead to severe pain, ulceration of the skin, deep vein thrombosis and death. At Southern California Vein Center, board-certified Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgeon James McPherson, MD, FACS, specializes in the latest minimally invasive techniques and treatments to address cosmetic and medical issues associated with varicose veins. Here, he shares more about varicose veins and treatment options. Q. WHAT CAUSES VARICOSE VEINS? A. Arteries transport blood from the heart to the body, including the arms and legs. Veins bring the blood from the arms and legs back to the heart. The pressure in the veins is much lower than the pressure in the arteries. As the veins use valves and leg muscles to keep the blood traveling in the right direction, if the valves give out, the blood travels in the wrong direction, aka reflux, often causing the blood to pool at the next working valve and resulting in a bulging, or varicose, vein. Q. WHAT ARE SOME OF THE REASONS THAT PATIENTS SUFFER WITH THIS PROBLEM? A. People who spend a lot of time on their feet are at greatest risk. This includes people in the restaurant and hospitality industry, first responders, teachers, flight attendants and moms! Pregnancy is also a risk factor. Some people think varicose veins are a cosmetic problem that is not covered by insurance, so they live with it until the symptoms become unbearable. Q. ARE VARICOSE VEIN PROCEDURES A COSMETIC SURGERY? A. Not always. We use ultrasound to carefully diagnose and map out the veins in your legs. This shows if the problem is deeper than your skin. The diagnosis and treatment of venous insufficiency is covered by 54

PARTING THOUGHTS

Learning to Live on the Brighter Side of the New Normal

THIS YEAR HAS BEEN SUCH A ROLLER COASTER RIDE AND THERE’S BEEN A LOT OF DISCONNECT, SEPARATION AND ISOLATION. Now, more than ever, it’s so important to stay connected, build relationships and reach out to your friends, family and clients. It always gives me such a boost to connect with friends and other small business owners and hear what they’re up to and how they are feeling and coping with their wins while working through their challenges. We really can learn from each other and more about ourselves that we can’t always see. What is your new normal? What are you doing to feed your soul in this very different time? Let me rephrase that: Is this for real? I feel like we are living in a “Twilight Zone” episode, yet this is our life. How has your life changed other than the new basics? Now, instead of only grabbing your keys, we have to make sure we have a mask and sanitizer. With social-distancing rules, eating at restaurants is now out in their parking lots. Zooming has become the norm for not only our business meetings, but for family functions and just to say hello. Hugging is nonexistent and seeing a doctor face to face has gone to only tele-medicine calls. Meeting with masks on, and no touching, hugging or handshaking is the new normal. Washing our hands and continuously washing our hands. I was at the grocery store and was done with my cart, so, just being polite, I offered my cart to someone walking by; well, you would have thought I had the plague. Shopping mostly online has a whole new meaning. Not going to concerts and shows, although the newest thing is drive-up entertainment—I love this! For about $40 per car, you can listen to concerts or watch a movie, but you have to

stay in your own space. It reminds me of the old drive-in movies. Everywhere you go, others are taking your temperature. People are being asked to stay home and work from home. If you’re in business, Zoom is the new way of communication. I’m still doing my radio show from home, just as you see many TV shows remoting in from their homes. My salon has been shut down for the second time. Our children’s life has drastically changed, with no school, and many families are being robbed of the excitement of the first day of what would normally have been our back to school season. Instead, parents are shuffling around trying to figure out if they are now homeschooling or working with other families to co-op with this school year. Living rooms are transformed into classrooms, as kids are adjusting to living and learning at home. We also see a shortage of coins—where does that come in? Underneath all those masks are still smiling faces that are a bit Listen to the Kim Pagano
