Like A Kid Again SUMMER REMINDS ME A LOT OF BEING A CHILD. Especially on these long, warm nights when everyone stays outside as long as there is light. Kids are laughing and playing, jumping through sprinklers, chalking sidewalks, using their imaginations and living each day to its fullest. I wonder at what point in becoming an adult we lose that carefree attitude. Admittedly, I don’t like adulting – especially in the summer. It’s hard to stay focused on the serious side when there are so many things to do!

This issue showcases a few fun ideas to check off the summer bucket list. Starting with the Fulton taproom remodel, we got to learn a bit about the transformation while talking with Jim Diley, their COO. Lots of care and thought went into expanding this great space where people can enjoy their favorite Fulton beverages with friends and family. We researched a few popular books from the best-selling lists to include in your summer reading collection. These are perfect to read at the park, on a road trip, or simply enjoy in a favorite chair right at home. Dr. Grace Totoe from the Minneapolis Health Clinic in Golden Valley spoke to us about her passion for medicine and how being an independent practice allows for a high level of care for her patients. We captured

Despite having to be a grown up, I hope you are able to take time this summer to relax and at least feel a bit like a kid again. I might just go and jump through my sprinkler!

“We are tailoring the building for the taproom experience, so when you walk in you feel like you are in a taproom and not just a warehouse where beer is brewed.”

dreamed up recipes and Brian drank the beer. Then their first employee came along, Mike, who is now the VP of Brewing. The first step was finding a space to brew. They found Sand Creek Brewing Company who had capacity for them to brew while learning the business from experienced brewmasters. Less than a year later they were distributing to over 100 bars in the Twin Cities and signed a lease for their own space in downtown Minneapolis that became Minneapolis’ first taproom. Before they knew it, business was booming with the taproom and brewing facility, but they were already in need for another brewery to accommodate production needs. In September of 2013, they found their gem. A 51,000 square foot building in Northeast Minneapolis that has the capacity to brew 80,000 barrels annually and houses their main office, warehouse and QC/QA laboratory. Currently, the downtown location is undergoing a remodel that emphasizes the taproom and enhances the customer experience at Fulton. “We are tailoring the building for the taproom experience, so when you walk in you feel like you are in a taproom and not just a warehouse where beer is brewed,” says Jim Diley, Co-Founder at Fulton. The original space was a 6,000 square foot single tenant building. The previous tenant was a commercial sewing company, so the space was very warehouse looking. One of the biggest changes was adding in more windows and taking down some walls to create a more open, airier space. “The walls were diminishing the brewery and retail space, so removing them creates more space for guests to move around and observe everything around them,” says Diley. “We also added a vestibule in the entry way to make the space more functional. Before you had to go up stairs, now guests will be able to enter the patio and building before they get to the retail space. This creates a better flow for the guest experience.” You will also find the addition of large 12x10 rollout doors that look out onto the street. The patio area has been renovated and expanded to be all on ground level versus raised on different levels as it was previously. The new patio has the capacity to seat over 100 people and of course, it’s dog friendly. The overall taproom is being revamped with fresh coats of paint and updated lighting fixtures to minimize the warehouse look and feel. The inside has an occupancy of 250 people, and is a mix of high tops, booths, and built-in banquette tables along with standard bar seating. The space can also be divided into private event spaces. This allows the community to book large groups, meetings or presentations with part of the taproom still operating for the general public. A new kitchen is also part of the renovation. In the past there was a food truck on site, but now there will be a full kitchen offering an expanded menu. “This will really improve our service and give our customers more variety when it comes to our food operations,” says Diley. In addition to the taproom upgrades, there will also be changes to the production space. A 3-barrel brew house is being installed which will allow Fulton to innovate and infuse creativity when it comes to brewing. “Customers will be able to try new, unique beers that will only be available in the taproom,” says Diley. “Of course, all of our standard beers will be served as well. We have the capacity to have 20-30 different beers on tap at a time. This includes our award winning Lonely Blonde beer and the 300 IPA that is a crowd favorite.” You can look for the newly remodeled taproom later this summer. “We have the most amazing people who work with us and we are so excited to welcome the staff and neighbors back to one of their favorite spots,” said Diley. SUMMER CAN BE A GREAT TIME TO PICK UP SOME NEW BOOKS AND TAKE TIME TO RELAX AND UNWIND. Whether it’s auto-biography, biography, fiction, non-fiction or educational, reading is an important part of exercising brain function, learning exciting new things, and can even be a sort of escape. Books have also been recognized as a stress reliever. Some research has indicated that reading a book has been known to lower heart rate and ease the tension of muscles in as little as six minutes. A lot of times reading is done in quiet or calming environments which can also help contribute to de-stressing. Dependent upon your book of choice, reading distracts us and allows our minds to venture into new worlds. These summer reads were taken from the New York Times best seller list in conjunction with the highest rated on Goodreads. If you haven’t checked out the Goodreads App yet, it’s a convenient way to list books you have read and are

Pe r s o n a l Medicine MINNEAPOLIS HEALTH CLINIC PROVIDES CUSTOMIZED CARE

ARTICLE ALEXANDRA PATTY

AS THE PRACTICE OF MEDICINE IS EVER-CHANGING AND EVOLVING, HOW DOES THIS IMPACT YOU? Good healthcare and the ability to determine the best fit for you and your family has never been more important. Dr. Grace Totoe of Minneapolis Health Clinic in Golden Valley has taken a fresh and more human approach to treating patients. Her practice emphasizes more time to really listen and respond with individual attention to each person she cares for. The Minneapolis Health Clinic offers a variety of healthcare services that cater to busy professionals as well as their families. These in-demand services range from primary care to weight management, allergy testing to dietary needs, pre-op and disability 20

evaluations, to pre-employment evaluations, as well as providing valuable second opinions for critical medical decisions. Born, raised, and educated in Ghana, West Africa, Dr. Totoe graduated medical school and came to the United States to complete her medical residency with St. Mary’s Hospital in Connecticut, a Yale University affiliate. After her residency program, she moved to Minnesota for a transfusion medicine fellowship. But, after finishing her fellowship, she was moved to pursue hospital medicine as an internist. She is now board-certified, and has worked in various hospital systems in Minnesota including Mayo Clinic, North Memorial Medical Center, and Health Partners to name just a few. She currently holds her medical license in the states of Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. Dr. Totoe was inspired to start her own clinic in 2018. It was important to her to work for herself and allow flexibility with her time on both the personal and professional side. Rather than risking possible burn-out in a hectic hospital atmosphere, she has committed to providing innovative, quality care without the typical time constraints. Dr. Totoe emphasizes that she “doesn’t want you to feel rushed” when coming to see her. She focuses on personalized medicine; being able to tailor patient care towards a patient’s risk factors. This includes analyzing the client’s health portfolio, current state, and family history. As a member of the Society of Lifestyle Medicine, Dr. Totoe works to provide lifestyle medicine with a holistic approach where each patient can achieve their short and long-term health goals.

LOCAL LIMELIGHT (CONTINUED)

Unlike most clinics, Minneapolis Health Clinic is set up to cater to two models of clients - those with and without health insurance, including out of state travelers. The practice provides concierge medical services to busy executives in need of a flexible schedule while providing them ample time to share their health concerns and goals. Visiting an independent clinic has major advantages such scheduling an appointment at a time most convenient for the patient, getting more doctor-to-patient face time, deepening the quality of care, taking time for health planning, and offering access to visit notes that can be referenced at any time as needed. Dr. Totoe’s team includes herself, two family nurse practitioners, and a medical assistant. As an internist, Dr. Totoe does not see children, so her Nurse Practitioner provides this same quality of personalized care for infants and children. In response to community needs and patient requests, there are plans to add Urgent Care services in the near future. Minneapolis Health Clinic provides state of the art telemedicine services accessible by phone, tablet/iPad or desktop computer without a patient ever needing to leave the comfort of their home. Appointments can be scheduled at the website, by calling or texting the clinic number at 763-496-5708. Clients can access their visit notes for future use. Dr. Totoe prides herself with an innate ability to connect with people; she is described as empathetic, calm and patient in all her interactions. She endeavors to help her clients meet their health goals by providing quality care to the best of her capabilities. When asked about what one should look for when selecting a healthcare provider, Dr. Totoe’s gives advice for finding a good physician, “Seek out a provider who will be patient and listen. Get extra information from online reviews. Also, make sure your doctor is experienced and specializes in the services you need at the time. With the current trends in medicine, I think everyone will benefit from personalized medicine and that is what a practice like the Minneapolis Health Clinic can provide”. 22

The rose garden is the second oldest public rose garden in the United States, and showcases 3,000 plants in 100 different varieties. The grounds and walking paths are well maintained and picturesque. A brief walk from the rose garden, is the Thomas Sadler Roberts Bird Sanctuary. Feeding with a water-soluble fertilizer or adding a slow release fertilizer will help give these plants the much-needed energy to keep blooming and growing throughout the rest of the summer. Also, as summer progresses some plants can start looking at bit straggly or overgrown. Don’t be afraid to give petunias, calibrachoa or any trailing plant a bit of a trim if needed. In the case of blooming annuals this will help produce more flowers. MID-SEASON GARDENING TIPS

VEGETABLE GARDENS Growing your own vegetables has seen a tremendous resurgence this past spring. Just like the container gardens, giving your vegetable plants some organic fertilizer will help produce a great crop of peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers or anything else you may be growing. Once we get to the end of July and early August a second crop of cool season veggies such as lettuce, peas, kale, spinach, radish and beets to name a few can be seeded directly in the garden to give you a fall crop of homegrown goodness. LANDSCAPING Summer is an excellent time to plant shrubs, shrub roses, evergreens, trees and perennials, whether it’s a full-on landscaping project or just freshening areas of your yard. The most important thing to keep in mind is to make sure plants are adequately watered during the hot days of summer. A thick layer of cypress mulch or wood chips around your landscape plants will decrease the amount of water needed plus help to control weeds. Perennials, shrubs and trees can be successfully planted until early November. Evergreens should be in the ground in early October. Be sure to keep newly installed plants well-watered until the ground freezes. 28

SWISS SHARD

CATMINT (NEPETA)

SUMMER CRUSH HYDRANGEA

Easily started from seed in late July or early August, swiss chard can be grown in the vegetable garden or in planters. It thrives during cool fall temperatures.

A favorite for three reasons. Blue flowers bring the color of the sky into the garden. Trim back a bit after the first blooms have faded and it will rebloom all summer. It’s a pollinator magnet. They love it!

Introduced in 2019 by Minnesota’s own Bailey Nurseries, Summer Crush Hydrangea makes a great addition to the landscape with its bright raspberry red flowers. If you’re looking for a different look, grow these plants in decorative containers during the summer months. CityLifestyle.com/MinneapolisLakes

Then top with an even layer of chocolate (or your favorite kind of ice cream). 3. For the next layer, top with an even layer of cookie crumbles, cake crumbles, chocolate candies, crushed graham crackers or anything else you want to layer your cake with. 4. Continue with layers of whipped cream, ice cream and toppings until you have reached the top of your pan. 5.
