THE STABILITY/FLEXIBILITY CONUNDRUM OF BACK PAIN Engineers build for stability differently than they build for flexibility. They are two entirely different functions and therefore require different structural components. The spine isn’t so fortunate. It requires both. In our spine, we have rigid bones that are stacked on top of one another to provide stability and discs between them to provide flexibility. For proper function, it is essential to have both systems working in harmony. Lower back pain is one of the most common medical problems, affecting an estimated 8 out of 10 people. Often this is due to the flexibility/stability conundrum. Problems can arise when the spine is too stiff (hypomobile) or conversely if there is not enough stability (hypermobile). Pain can range from dull and achy to sudden and sharp. While most back pain goes away on its own, for some, the pain can become chronic, which affects their quality of life. When pain affects the ability to function, medical intervention becomes a necessity. Physical therapists are able to identify if the back pain is attributed to a flexibility and/or stability problem. Bend physical therapist, Glenn Maclean-Talbot, PT, DPT, OCS weighs in on how the flexibility-stability conundrum contributes to a lot of lower back pain and why proper diagnosis is paramount to effectively reduce symptoms and prevent future problems. “The low back is situated directly above the stable pelvis and below the stable rib cage,” he explains. “Because these regions don’t move much, there is a lot of force that gets transmitted to the low back. If the lower back is too stiff, we won’t get normal motion, which often results in pain. However, if we don’t have enough stability, we can end up moving too much through the lumbar spine, which can be equally problematic.” To support the low back, a strong set of core muscles is important. Envision someone pushing down on your head, that pressure is placed vertically on the spinal column. If you don’t have good abdominal pressure and there is a bend in the spine this could be harmful to the joints and discs. However, if you can create internal pressure in your abdomen, the spinal load can be distributed through a much larger region. Which means less pressure to each
level of the spine and thus less back pain. To achieve this, Glenn spends a lot of time helping his back pain patients develop core strength. “Conversely,” Glenn says, “if or lacks sufficient flexibility, with worn-out shocks on a need a flexible spine to everyday movements.”
the spine is too stiff, it’s like driving a car bumpy gravel road. We absorb the force of
Physical therapists are specially trained to assess where mobility limitations exist and work to improve flexibility through targeted stretches and manual therapy techniques. “The goal of physical therapy back rehab is to create a healthy environment for the spine by improving flexibility, while at the same time controlling its movement through proper core muscle recruitment,” said Glenn. “This allows better movement control, which reduces the risk of pain or injury.” Back pain rehabilitation also requires improving body mechanics so that the legs and upper body can take more of the load and thus reduce the strain on the back. This can include improving hamstring and hip flexor mobility and improving thoracic spine motion and training the body to work as a whole instead of overloading the back when you do things like play sports or move something heavy repeatedly. Glenn advises, “If someone has back pain that is rapidly getting worse or has pain going down their leg or that persists longer than three weeks, being evaluated by a physical therapist is warranted.” Depending on the person, relief can come quickly. A physical therapist will create a long-term treatment plan with the goal of maintaining strength and stability in the back to limit the risk for future injury and pain. But don’t wait for back pain to become a problem. Glenn recommends a simple exercise that anyone can do to begin creating intraabdominal pressure. Here’s how it’s done: Get on all fours and pull your belly button in towards your spine. Hold it there while you breathe, counting to ten. Exhale and then do it again. Pretend you are balancing a glass of water on your back, your goal is to pull in without any spinal movement. Don’t ‘’spill the water” while doing this exercise.

IF A PICTURE IS WORTH A THOUSAND WORDS, IMAGINE THE STORIES THAT A PIECE OF ART TELLS. More than just a drawing or painting hanging on a wall, a piece of art oftentimes is a living, breathing representation of those who helped to bring it to life. The artist may put pen, paint, or a photograph to the canvas, but the art is not complete until it is framed and ready to be hung. That’s where Deb Spicer of Eastlake Framing comes in: “A frame should be the bridge between the art and the home,” she says. Deb’s love for art began at the young age of five at her family’s home along the McKenzie River. She and her twin sister Barb would spend their days playing “art gallery” as one little girl would present a freshly-made piece of art to the other and they would discuss how to make the picture come to life. “My mother enrolled in a correspondence course in interior design when we were ten-years-old and we poured over the course content for hours on end,” explains Spicer. “It was such a formative experience.” This accidental exposure to the art world helped The restoration of a painting typically takes eight to 20 hours of work, but saves artwork for future generations.
to create the strong bond between sisters and a lifelong love for interior design. But, it was an eye for business and a willingness to accept change that lead Deb to what would become her life’s calling as a well-respected art restoration expert and owner of Eastlake Framing in Bend.

COZY HOUSE THE UNPREDICTABLE NATURE OF CENTRAL OREGON WEATHER CAN GREATLY IMPACT UTILITY BILLS. FROM HOT SUMMER DAYS TO SUBFREEZING WINTERS, VARYING CONDITIONS PUT A HEATING AND COOLING SYSTEM TO THE TEST. HERE ARE FOUR WAYS TO HELP KEEP HEATING AND COOLING BILLS LOW, WHILE STILL KEEPING YOU COMFORTABLE IN ANY SEASON OR WEATHER THAT COMES OUR WAY.
STAY COMFORTABLE IN CENTRAL OREGON SEASONS: TIPS FOR HEATING AND COOLING YOUR HOME
REGULAR MAINTENANCE OF THE CURRENT SYSTEM The heating and cooling equipment in homes are typically the appliances that draw the most energy, accounting for an average of 45 percent of a home’s energy bill, according to the United States Department of Energy. Making sure a system is properly maintained will keep it running efficiently and increase its longevity. Each season, take care to replace and clean the air filter. Be sure to clear the unit of any vegetation that might restrict the surrounding air movement. Snow in the winter time may also need to be shoveled away, taking care not to damage the coil on a heat pump. On a gas furnace, deep snowfall may also block flues that will need to be cleared for proper operation, and don’t forget to check air ducts for small leaks or holes. “Depending on the type of system, we recommend homeowners schedule a yearly or bi-annual maintenance to ensure a system is running correctly and catch any small issues before they grow into bigger ones,” says Rob Gassner at Ponderosa Heating & Cooling. 24

differently than what they saw in the photo,” Scott explains. Designing and implementing extended living spaces is both fun and rewarding. Trends for both front and back areas are heavily dependent on the environment where you live. In the high desert climate we enjoy the highest number of sunshine days in the state of Oregon. Therefore, hot tubs, cushioned lounge furniture, fire pits, dining tables and outdoor kitchens are very popular in Central Oregon.
PLAN YOUR PROJECTS Creating an extended living space takes time. There are plenty of books, websites and online instructional videos to give a general idea of what is available, but it really takes visits to local showrooms so you can touch and feel what you will be buying. In Central Oregon, exterior planning begins early. Because you want to enjoy our Spring and Summer months, outdoor living areas and gardens should be planned and ready for use during these months.

Like to entertain outdoors? Do you have children, or enjoy gardening? Outdoor kitchens, comfy lounge seats, fire pits and hot tubs are perfect for entertaining family and friends. Implementing a tree house, sand box or large grassy area for sports is a perfect way for the whole family to enjoy a back yard. If having a garden and spending time with family and friends are both equally important, create a space that’s for working, entertaining and a place to relax.
SHOP IN PERSON Buying online seems convenient and less time consuming, but shopping local and getting the right fit for the outdoor furniture, kitchens and hot tubs and any corresponding technology will save time in the long run. Take trips to showrooms in the area, talk to salespeople and sit on the furniture to test out its comfort, size and color. Custom orders are possible so you will get the color and model that fits your living style and dĂŠcor. The quality of products used in outdoor living spaces must be sufficient to withstand the constant sun, rain and wind. Inexpensive items may look similar to high quality items, but most have a limited lifetime when used outdoors. PatioWorldBend.com,

Most food subscription boxes will allow you to choose a delivery day and time frame that works best for you. Your grocery items will be packaged as intuitively as possible, with any refrigerator items tucked in with ice packs. Bonus: You can reuse the insulation and ice packs in kids’ lunch boxes, on road trips or in your own lunches at work.

ingredients + Prep
Depending on what you order, you may need some of your own supplies. When you select your meals, think about what you will need to cook the food in and if any other kitchen utensils would be helpful. Have them ready to go so you don’t have to make any last-minute trips to the store, defeating the purpose of getting your box delivered! If the meals are foods you would enjoy reheated, you could do all of your cooking the day you get the box to meal prep for your week, or you can just store the ingredients to the other meals in your fridge and cook them throughout the week.

cooking
If you’re a little less-experienced in the kitchen, meal kits are great for learning! Read the instructions carefully before you get started so you don’t feel frazzled while the heat is up high, and take your time. If you are a more seasoned chef, feel free to take your own spin on the recipes and add some extra flavor or swap out ingredients to make it perfect for your palate.

This is the really fun part! It’s time to start taste-testing. Make a note tab in your phone for tracking what you love and what isn’t your favorite. That way, when it’s time to select more meals, you know what you have tried and what you absolutely have to try again. Don’t forget to ask your family what was a hit and a miss. Who knows— maybe the kids love some of the Purple Carrot recipes and don’t even notice how many veggies they are eating!
