“After not being able to walk without pain and seeing two different physical therapists I was losing hope. I had been diagnosed with plantar fasciitis but was getting no relief! Mary discovered that the pain was not coming from one area and treated me with acupuncture. She was so comforting during the entire process and after only a few sessions I saw results! RENOVATE & REFINE

Fireplace Decor

A Very Cary Christmas ARTICLE CAROLINE BARNHILL PHOTOGRAPHY KATHERINE JOHNSON 14

Cary Lifestyle | December 2019

‘TIS THE SEASON FOR HOLIDAY STYLE! Cary Lifestyle checked in with local interior designer Lauren Burns to get her tips and tricks to making your home shine this holiday season. WHAT IDEAS DO YOU HAVE FOR DECORATING MANTLES FOR THE HOLIDAYS? Mantel design is important in holiday decorating as it creates a beautiful focal point. Draping garland over a mantel is a great starting point and is a versatile option, whether you choose fresh greenery or artificial garland.  I prefer decorating with live greenery in my holiday decor because it adds a festive fragrance while bringing the outdoors in.  If you are not wanting the additional task of picking up needles, artificial greenery may be a better fit for you. Add pine cones, sprigs of red berries, twigs and other natural items to add interest and to layer the garland. Creating balance on a mantel with decorative items is your next step. Select beautiful candle holders with delicate tapers and then add holiday accessories, such as metal reindeers, trees and other items in your holiday palette. Make it colorful and fun or keep it sophisticated and neutral. DO YOU HAVE FUN, UNIQUE TIPS FOR DISPLAYING WREATHS? Holiday wreaths are a staple in decorating for the season. A beautiful wreath can be traditional or modern and come in a variety of sizes and shapes. One option to bring a festive feel to the interior of your home is to hang smaller, plain evergreen wreaths with PHOTOGRAPHY BY Katherine Johnson STYLED BY Lauren Burns Interiors Wreaths from Garden Supply Company

holiday ribbons from each interior window. This creates a cozy and cohesive feel for the holiday season. Another option is to create a wall vignette of different wreaths.  Get creative and mix

eucalyptus to grapevine wreaths or anything in between. Add festive bows or keep them natural. Stagger the wreaths to create a gallery wall, and you will see how simple it is to add such a unique and festive design to your everyday walls!

Decorating using Wreaths.

HOW CAN PEOPLE DECORATE THEIR CHRISTMAS TREE WITH NATURAL ELEMENTS THAT TIE INTO THEIR HOME’S NATURAL COLORS? I recommend layering natural elements to keep the colors neutral. Use gold, silver, white or cream ornaments with a glittery but neutral ribbon to envelop your Christmas tree. Add heartier holiday sprigs to create a layering of materials and a cohesive, sophisticated and extremely versatile look. FAVORITE LOCAL STORES FOR FINDING UNIQUE HOLIDAY DECOR? One of my favorite local stores for finding unique holiday decor is Garden Supply Company. They have an amazing variety of holiday decor and talented employees who give sound guidance on greenery. They also make custom bows that are gorgeous! I have had luck with finding unique items from At Home, as well. Cary Lifestyle | December 2019

WHETHER YOU ARE LOOKING FOR AN OUTFIT FOR COZY CHRISTMAS DAY, A POSH HOLIDAY SOIRÉE, OR HIGH-OCTANE NEW YEAR’S EVE, WE’VE GOT YOU COVERED IN THE UPCOMING LOOKS. Seal your style and feel perfectly cozy with plush sweaters and faux leather leggings. If you want to jazz it up, add animal prints to the mix or accessorize with color, sparkles or an on-trend chunky necklace. Accessories always add fun to any outfit and remember they don’t have to match perfectly! Make the most of the holiday party season and wear as much velvet as possible. Pearls keep the vibe romantic and will give a stylish elegant look that just keeps going. Keeping the holiday spirit with colors of red and green always feels festive. Look for deeper tones of crimson and emerald. There is no better time to wear something bedazzled in sequins than New Year’s Eve. It always adds the much-needed drama to get you noticed! If getting noticed isn’t your thing, the fool-proof little black dress always comes through. Finish strong with bold accessories, a faux fur jacket or a sequin cape.

IF YOU WANT TO JAZZ IT UP, ADD ANIMAL PRINTS TO THE MIX OR ACCESSORIZE WITH COLOR, SPARKLES OR AN ON-TREND CHUNKY NECKLACE.

staff Christmas party into something more meaningful. They contacted Susan Rhodes, the guidance counselor for Swift Creek Elementary School in Raleigh. She was able to give information for a few families in need of Christmas support. That year, presents were selected and purchased by Ruckus employees and owners. The event continues to grow with community support. “You know (Ryan) probably thought about it year-round,” Amy says. “When he was very sick, he stressed how important it was that we continue this while he was gone.” The 10th annual Raising a Ruckus campaign is now in full swing. Each restaurant has trees up by early-November. Ornaments with holiday wishes are color-coded by family. Gifts and monetary donations are returned by mid-December for volunteers to sort. The guidance counselors distribute items to families a few days before Christmas. Ashley Waddell, guidance counselor for Laurel Park Elementary, is in her third year partnering with Ruckus to support families around the holidays. “We really appreciate the generosity of the community through the Raising a Ruckus program,” she says.  The Ruckus team recounts stories of memorable gifts for the families throughout the years. They have given bunk beds to twins who were sleeping on the floor, pajamas and dolls when a parent was unexpectedly out of work, a washer and dryer for a family without a set, and new clothes for a boy being teased at school. They paid for two months at a hotel for a single mom and her children while she worked to save enough in a new job to get them into an apartment. Another favorite was when a boy asked for a cap and gown for graduation. Not only did Ruckus provide the cap and gown, but they tossed in a limo and dinner celebration for eight.  Robert wants local businesses to help this event grow even bigger than it has. “These are families and children in our neighborhoods that we can help,” Robert says. “It’s pretty important that we give back to our community,” Amy says. “It’s hard to believe that something so small became so big and has helped so many people for so many years. There’s no way we’ll ever stop.” December 2019 | Cary Lifestyle

TIMES PAST HOLIDAY MEMORIES FROM OUR TOWN

CARY CHRISTMAS PAST IF YOU’VE EVER DRIVEN DOWN A TRAIL OF

SOFTLY

GLOWING

LUMINARIES

ON

CHRISTMAS EVE, YOU’VE TAKEN PART IN A CARY CHRISTMAS TRADITION THAT SPANS GENERATIONS. Decades ago, when the town was still small enough that every neighbor was a close friend, the holidays were far simpler. There was no crowded mall with bustling crowds; instead, shares Elva Templeton, “We didn’t get anything on Christmas much; candy, an orange, and maybe one or two toys is all, all the toys we had during the year.” In the 1940s and ’50s, Cary was still a very small town, with many families too poor to buy fruit during the year. The historic downtown churches were central to holiday celebrations, often putting together bags of goodies for all the children. According to the oral histories collected in Peggy Van Scoyoc’s Just a Horse-Stopping Place, “They would buy paper sacks from Mr. Mills’ store, and ladies would meet and they would put an apple and an orange, some sticks of candy, some nuts, and some raisins in every single bag under that Christmas tree.” “Our orange at Christmas was a real treat,” recalls Margaret Travis.
