MANHATTAN ON PATRICK
THERE’S A BUZZ AROUND TOWN. It’s exciting and it’s growing. Frederick may soon be on the theater map alongside New York and Washington, D.C., with a professional production by Phenomenology. Phenomenology is a nonprofit organization founded by Jeffery Keilholtz. “Phenomenology is a corridor for the performing arts, by bringing productions direct from New York City to Frederick and launching projects direct from the City of Spires to the Big Apple,” Jeffrey says. Through Phenomenology, Jeffery is bringing his original

Broadway talent, this staged reading of Jeffery’s play Second Derivative, Equal to Zero takes place for one night only. This event is going to be even bigger with the addition of Jamie-

Lynn Sigler, best known for her role as Meadow Soprano on The Sopranos, and director Ashlie Atkinson, acclaimed co-star in Spike Lee’s BlacKkKlansman. These talent partnerships are exactly what Jeffrey is working so hard to foster. Standing in the lobby of the Weinberg Center for the Arts with fellow actor Amanda Shafer, Jeffery’s passion and enthusiasm are evident and contagious. As they discuss the project, it’s clear he has a vision of what Frederick could become with this partnership.

“I love the theater! I love the intimacy of it. It’s happening right here, for the first time, the only time, every time. It’s happening in real-time, and there’s power in that,” he says. “Frederick is culturally evolved, and it’s exciting! There’s a lot of talent, and we [Frederick] are geographically well-positioned. We have high-level talent that needs some elevated exposure. It’s the perfect cauldron, so to speak.” Jeffery is at home in Frederick. Having attended Thomas Johnson High, he was very involved in theater and credits his parents for their support. “My parents were great! The real blessing was, even as a young boy and knowing I was into the arts, they never made me go pick up a baseball or a hammer. They said, ‘You go! You be you.’ Their support and encouragement led me to pursue my passion.” Jeffery’s passion led him to New York, where he studied under Lily Lodge at the Actors Conservatory and was mentored by the famed Sergey Dreyden of the Moscow Art Theatre. Not only is he an actor, but he’s also a writer and a producer. Another

actor,
Amanda
Shafer
from
Middletown, also stars in the play. She came to Manhattan on Patrick through an actor’s page on Facebook. “Jeff found me on Facebook as the winner of the Best Actor for the 72 Film Fest. We met in person, and I ended up winning a ticket to the Phenomenology event where I found out what it’s all about. And I thought, ‘Oh my gosh! This is amazing!’ and I wanted to support it. It’s just complete icing on the cake that I get to be a part!” Jeffrey and Amanda agree that this project is important for Frederick. “Having something that facilitates connections for people in this area who might not have that opportunity is huge. There is so much untapped talent here,” Amanda says. “The best part of bringing this to Frederick, for me,” Jeffery says, “is seeing the look on people’s faces when they hear about Phenomenology and Manhattan on Patrick!” PhenoArt.org/ManhattanOnPatrick Jeffrey Keilholtz

Frederick Lifestyle | September 2019
ARTICLE MEREDITH ERIKSEN, TUSCAN BLUE DESIGN
A GALLERY OR COLLAGE WALL IS SIMPLY A COLLECTION — A WONDERFUL WAY TO ADD PERSONALITY TO ANY ROOM. Follow these tips for creating your best-styled gallery wall.
1
G AT H E R Y O U R COLLECTION
Take time to gather the pieces. A collage wall is the perfect place to show off items you’ve collected on trips, vintage items or family pieces. Mix different styles. Gallery walls feel more interesting if some of the pieces are personal, so include a favorite family portrait or children’s artwork. Keep the color palette simple. Create a cohesive look by using one or two similar frame colors. If you like a more eclectic look, mix and match the frames. You can always use different style frames but paint them the same color.
2
PL AN IT Start in the center of the wall for balance. Anchor a favorite piece or a couple of larger pieces in the center. Then start working additional pieces around them. Plan out your collage on the floor. You can create a template of the different pieces using butcher’s block paper, then easily move them around to create the collage. Keep about 2 inches between the framed artwork.
3
HANG IT Hanging the first few pieces at eye level or around 5 feet. If you have high ceilings, you can hang them a bit higher. Then you can hang pieces below or above the center pieces. Your collage will look completely different on the wall, so step back every now and then to view the pieces as you hang them. Notice how the pieces balance each other in size and color. Add smaller pieces to fill in any gaps in the gallery. Gallery walls are all about your collections. It’s up to you. Have fun adding or changing pieces!

[ generosity is always in style ]
Natalie Cioffi and Maria Herrera
GIVING BACK HAS ALWAYS BEEN STYLISH IN FREDERICK. How fortunate to be part of a community that values giving time and treasure to assist others, in both big and small ways. Of the many generous organizations here in the county, featuring only three was a daunting task. From construction to singing, to connecting, to funding, these organizations have a wide reach. Shining a light on all the good they do, we primped and pampered our friends for the day and, as you’ll see, these folks really shine in red carpet style! Imagine a child from another country who, after arriving here in Frederick, is placed in the home of a relative whom he’s never met. Or imagine having a serious medical problem and never having been to a doctor. These, and much more, are issues that occur daily for the volunteers and staff of the Spanish Speaking Community of Maryland. The goal of the organization—which was founded by Executive Director Maria Herrera’s father—is to enable immigrants in Frederick and Montgomery counties to become self-sufficient and to assist with life change. “There are so many challenges that these children face, and we work to help them survive. We want them to feel that they are going to have a better life,” Maria says. “I remember what I endured, and these individuals have endured so much more. I want to be able to make a difference in someone’s life.” “It’s stylish to give back because we would not be where we are today if someone else did not ‘give back’ to us,” says Natalie Cioffi, program director and Maria’s daughter. “And personally, I love giving back; it makes me feel empowered and beautiful inside and out! It’s a look we should all wear.” Making a difference in people’s lives is a common thread to each of our “stylish” organizations. Focusing on the needs of the community for basic housing, the next star of the show is Habitat for Humanity, whose mission is to provide and maintain affordable housing in the community. “As a largely volunteer organization,” Executive Director Ron Cramer says, “we cannot do this without our partners: our local builders, nonprofits, individuals and volunteers. Helping others is what God wants us to do. I do this because I care about the people here in Frederick County. I was born and raised here, and my heart is here. I want everyone to be able to enjoy all we have to offer. Having 39% of residents unable to afford to live here is unacceptable to me, and I’m doing my best to change that.”

GENEROSITY IS ALWAYS IN STYLE
(CON TI N UED)
Feeding, caring for and housing means meeting the most basic needs of our residents. There is another need the Frederick Children’s Chorus is filling. Lastly, on the Red Carpet, is Lee Fuhr, executive director of the Frederick Children’s Chorus, whose mission is to bring children together for the joyful exploration and celebration of singing. It is said that music soothes the soul, and studies confirm that music lowers levels of depression and can increase happiness. “We are a practice in prevention, saving children’s lives before they need to be saved,” Lee says. “I’ve seen what music can do. We are preventing suicides before they need to be prevented, and we are creating stable, emotional people before depression can be a thing for them.” Lee adds that she and the staff members do this for the love of the children and music. While three of Frederick’s amazing nonprofit organizations have been given the spotlight, there are many more that are full of good people, who sacrificially give of their time and treasure and care for the Frederick community in diverse ways. Giving will always be stylish. As Ron of Habitat for Humanity says, “Frederick is a mecca for volunteerism.” And that’s one of the reasons it’s a wonderful place to call home. Glam on the Go BEAUTY IS MORE THAN SKIN-DEEP
CARRYING HER SUITCASES FULL OF EVERY POSSIBLE THING A GIRL COULD USE, SHE BREEZES INTO THE ROOM. One would assume that carrying two suitcases full of glam-inducing products up several flights of stairs would dampen the spirit of this barely 5-foot-tall gal, but she is effervescent. She is not only beautiful; her smile is contagious, and rarely is there a moment it’s not on display. She exudes a joy and peace that is not often found, and she is everyone’s biggest cheerleader. This glamour girl is much more than a pretty face. Ashley Chin is finding success in the ever-evolving beauty industry. THE TENTH WARD DISTILLING COMPANY’S COCKTAIL LAB ON EAST PATRICK STREET WAS CONCEIVED AS A FRIENDLY AND INTERACTIVE SPACE. Here patrons can sample and learn more about their locally made craft liquors, including unusual flavors like smoked bourbon, caraway rye whiskey and absinthe—an herbal, emerald-colored spirit with a hint of licorice flavor— according to Monica Pearce, distillery owner, designer and mastermind. “My staff has created this very comforting, cozy, welcoming culture with our customers, and that’s how I want you to feel when you walk in the door,” Monica says, adding that she hopes customers will feel at ease and take their time exploring Tenth Ward’s cocktail flights and mixed drinks in an unhurried, unpretentious yet sophisticated atmosphere.

“I drew on a lot of inspiration from the steampunk culture,” Monica says, noting that one of the largest steampunk gatherings in the United States is held in Frederick each year, an event at which Tenth Ward regularly hosts absinthe workshops. She calls attention to the green absinthe fairy depicted in the mural, who wears aviatrix goggles as a salute to her many steampunk fans. In addition to encouraging cocktail exploration and experimentation, the lab offers other interactive, hands-on experiences like themed tastings focusing on specific and seasonal ingredients, whiskey-scented candle making, distillation classes and more. There will also be live music on weekends. Monica hopes customers will return often, take advantage of the full array of experiences available at the cocktail lab, relax and become educated craft liquor aficionados. “We want it to be an experimental learning process. Craft spirits are very new in popularity; not everyone knows the difference between a bourbon and a rye. We provide an interactive nosing and tasting experience for our customers so they can learn how to pull flavor profiles out of a spirit.” Because the lab offers ample seating in an expansive lounge area, customers will be able to take their time sampling these flavor profiles in mixed drinks like the sweet Lady Fritchie, smoky Jalapeño Margarita and herbal Key City cocktail. With endless drinking possibilities in a lab like this, Frederick will certainly ward off bar boredom. EAT WELL, SURF OFTEN Surf House Island Cantina opened its doors in March of 2016. The restaurant specializes in coastal cuisine, American classics with a beachy, Latin twist, and delicious cocktails made with dailysqueezed fruit juices. An open kitchen with famously fresh food is complimented by a captivating atmosphere: palm trees, vibrant colors, and beautifully decorated surf boards that line the walls of the restaurant and complete the island cantina vibe.
