“FASHIONS FADE, ST YLE IS ETERNAL.” —Y VES SAINT L AURENT

I

may have grown up in a tiny town in Western Kansas, but my passion for fashion has always been strong — it moved and intrigued me, and like my favorite designers, I too wanted to find a way to contribute to the broadening of beauty. Armed with an interest in science combined with a desire to help people, I found my calling in dermatology. I love both fashion and dermatology because I appreciate beautiful things. Bringing my eye for aesthetics to my craft as a dermatology provider is rewarding. When treatments make my patients’ skin look healthier, younger, and more beautiful, I feel the same satisfaction a fashion designer must feel watching their work come to life down the runway. To augment my all-time favorite French fashion designer’s quote: “Fashions fade, style (and beautiful skin) is eternal.”

WHERE DID THE SUMMER GO?

Todd Smith, Lindsay Sellin, Kayla Orzechowski, Washington Wine Commission, QFC

As we enter the fall season, we look forward to cozy Sundays on the couch watching our favorite football teams, back-to-school activities that keep us hustling and bustling around town, and warm nights by the fire. Fall is a time of harvest and a particularly palatable time for farm-to-table fare. Enjoy this month’s Culinary Creations column, which focuses on Healthy Eats created by a local dietician, RN and healthy food blogger who direct their focus toward nutrition before we get sucked into the holiday bliss. Take a trip through The New Q's many departments ranging from fresh, local produce to the finest meats available, and bring Naples to your own living room with takeout from a Seattle area favorite, Tutta Bella. Then be sure to quench your thirst as you tour some of Washington's finest wineries with us in the Hops & Vine pages. Kirkland boasts some of the finest restaurants and tasting rooms on the Eastside to please your palate and whet your whistle in addition to a few of the remaining staples that we grew up with. Kirkland Lifestyle | October 2019

Since the opening of the new Kirkland Urban QFC on July 31, LOCAL RESIDENTS HAVE ENJOYED AN ARRAY OF NEW FOOD AND DRINK OPTIONS TO ENJOY, OF BOTH THE IN-STORE AND TAKE-HOME VARIETIES. With an abundance of natural and organic produce, the meal solutions in the meat and seafood sections, the expansive grocery items curated specifically for the neighborhood, and the expanded, hyper-local adult beverage selections, QFC has you covered no matter what’s for dinner (or breakfast or lunch). But for those looking to skip the cooking process and grab a ready-to-eat meal, QFC’s prepared food hall section is just the place for you.

Stop 1: TUTTA BELLA

That wonderful aroma you smell when you first walk into the store is most likely the wood-fired oven that Tutta Bella had installed to cook up their famous pizzas. QFC has partnered with the local pizzeria to offer the Northwest’s first certified authentic Neapolitan pizza. In addition to the wood-fired pizza and a cannoli bar serving fresh Sicilian cannoli to order, Tutta Bella offers items such as meatball and porchetta sandwiches, meat and vegetarian lasagna, a variety of salads and their award-winning tiramisu.

Stop 2: YUMMI SUSHI

You have two options when it comes to picking up sushi at the Kirkland Urban QFC: packaged for grab-and-go or made-to-order by the in-store chefs. Yummi Sushi, based out of Texas, was selected by QFC to provide specialty sushi specifically for the Kirkland Urban store. The company prepares Japanese dishes daily with seasoned rice, crisp sliced vegetables and the freshest seafood available. There is even a Kirkland Roll designed specifically for this location.

Stop 3:

SANDWICHES AND CHEF’S CASE Loyal QFC shoppers have become accustomed to the deli’s selection of delicious Boar’s Head sandwiches and the plethora of options behind the glass in the chef’s case department. But the new store has made several tweaks and improvements that will leave you wanting to try it all. The new and improved sandwich bar features different selections than any other QFC store, all made with natural or organic meats and ingredients. And the deli case features exclusive items prepared locally and specifically for QFC. This is the perfect stop prior to your picnic at Marina Park.

Stop 4:

HOT COOKIE BAR You can’t make a trip to the Kirkland Urban QFC prepared food hall without a little dessert, right? Be sure to try the warm, gooey and decadent Q Cookie. This special treat was designed by a local vendor and is full of love and chocolate! Your friends, family and coworkers will all thank you when you satisfy their sweet tooth with this one-of-a-kind cookie.

Stop 5: Q20 PUB

Once you have selected your pizza, sushi, sandwich or chef’s case item, why wait until you get home to eat it when you can grab a seat at the Q20 Pub instead? You can choose to eat inside while taking in a game on one of the five flatscreen TVs or enjoy the last bit of great fall weather on the patio. And while you’re there, take your pick from one of the many local rotating beer taps, extensive wine list or maybe even give the frosé (frozen rosé) a try. No matter where you sit or what you decide to drink, the friendly QFC bartenders will be there to serve you with a smile.

You can even provide anonymous feedback by calling 425. QFC.TALK or texting QFC to 23456. WINES AFTER HUMBLE BEGINNINGS AND SOME SIGNIFICANT CHALLENGES, THE STATE’S STILL RELATIVELY YOUNG WINE INDUSTRY IS FLOURISHING

APTLY NEWS-

CASTER RON BURGUNDY, THE WASHINGTON WINE BUSINESS IS “KIND OF A BIG DEAL.” The state is second only to California in premium wine production, defined as wines sold for $8 and higher. There are nearly 1,000 wineries in the state, 350 grape growers, 70 variet-

ies produced in a ratio of 59% red to 40% white, and some 17.5 million cases sold annually, according to the Washington State Wine Commission. A new winery opens nearly every 30 days. MOVE OVER, NAPA Numerous factors have fueled growth in wine production, not the least of which are the state’s geography, climate and natural resources. By far, the majority of the state’s wine production is located in eastern Washington, where the rain shadow provided by the Cascade Mountains means a drier climate with longer periods of sunlight—nearly 17 hours a day in the summer—and consistent temperatures. Italian immigrants in the Walla Walla region fostered some of the earliest wine production, and two of the state’s biggest wineries, Chateau Ste. Michelle and Columbia Winery, had their origins in the area. As with any crop production, water is a prime consideration, and Eastern Washington’s rivers—Snake, Walla Walla, Yakima and Columbia—provide a necessary source for irrigation, along with helping to keep temperatures moderate in winter, when freezing can damage the vines. HEALTHY CARROT CAKE DOUGHNUTS

12 servings

WHAT KID DOESN'T LOVE DOUGHNUTS? Here is a great way to give your kiddo a treat while sneaking in some fruits and veggies. This recipe can easily be made gluten-free and/or vegan and makes for a perfect pre-trick-or-treat snack! INGREDIENTS For the Doughnuts: + 2 cups whole wheat pastry flour or 1:1 gluten-free flour (such as Cup4Cup or Trader Joe’s) + 2 teaspoons baking soda + 1/2 teaspoon salt

METHOD 1. Preheat oven to 375 F. Spray doughnut mold with cooking spray of choice. 2. Sift flour, baking soda, salt and spices into a large bowl. Stir in carrots as well as the coconut, walnuts and raisins (if using). 3. In a separate, medium-sized bowl, beat brown

+ 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

sugar and eggs (or flax eggs) until combined. Add oil,

+ 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger

pineapple, vanilla and orange juice. Stir to combine.

+ 2 cups grated carrots + 1/2 cup unsweetened shredded coconut (optional) + 1/2 cup chopped walnuts (optional) + 1/2 cup raisins (optional)

4. Add wet ingredients to the flour mixture, and stir until well-incorporated. Stir in raisins. 5. Spoon batter into the prepared doughnut mold, filling to the top. 6. Bake for 20-25 minutes or until cake tester

+ 1 cup brown sugar

inserted comes out clean. Let rest 15 minutes and then

+ 3 large eggs (or 3 flax “eggs” –

pop out doughnuts onto wire rack to cool.

see note below*) + 1/3 cup vegetable oil, coconut oil or avocado oil + 1/2 cup crushed pineapple + 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

7. While the doughnuts are baking, make the icing. In a small bowl, whisk together the cream cheese, powdered sugar and water. Add more sugar or water to your taste and desired consistency. 8. Once the doughnuts are cool enough to handle,

+ 1/4 cup orange juice

dip each doughnut into the icing or drizzle them with

+ Cooking spray

a spoonful of icing like pictured. Enjoy! Makes about 12 doughnuts.

For the Icing: + 2 tablespoons cream cheese, softened

*Flax egg: In a small bowl, mix 1 tablespoon of ground

+ 2 tablespoons powdered sugar

flax seed with 3 tablespoons of water. Let sit 15 minutes

+ 2 tablespoons water

to thicken. Makes 1 “egg.”
