One thing we can always count on in Texas is heat and humidity! As a native Houstonian, I haven’t always loved what our weather does to my hair, but there are some advantages. For example, we can play golf all-year round! The humidity keeps our skin looking young! And we can enjoy our swimming pools a majority of the year, which is why many of us create our own backyard oasis. In this issue, you’ll meet, Shawn Kelly, our partner who owns Mirror Lake Designs and has four decades of experience creating outdoor spaces that suite each families style and budget. We hope you are enjoying each issue of Cypress Lifestyle! It truly is a labor of love each month! See you around town!

GARDENS OFFER ARTFUL, IDYLLIC SPRINGTIME GETAWAY
M E R C E R B O TA N I C G A R D E N S
IN FULL BLOOM NOTHING’S MORE ICONIC ABOUT SPRINGTIME THAN A GARDEN IN FULL BLOOM. This month, Mercer Botanic Gardens is a quiet idyllic 400-acre garden space brimming with colorful plant life, birds and hatching Monarch butterflies. The gardens, less than five miles south of Highway 99 and the
winter plants giving way to colorful spring salvias, petu-

growing and changing.” Aldine Westfield Road splits the property into the east side botanic gardens and the west
side arboretum. The east side is made up of 60 acres of manicured gardens featuring a children’s garden, a stunning plaza, goldfish pool, endangered plant species and winding walking trails. The west side includes two playgrounds, several miles of walking trails and a Cypress swamp. The garden is the only one of it’s kind in northwest Houston and owes its existence to Thelma and Charles Mercer, who bought 14 acres of brambly woodlands alongside Cypress Creek in 1949. Over the next 24 years, they battled floods, mosquitoes and droughts to create a garden oasis. They slowly cleared the land to make more room for dogwood and hawthorne trees. The couple built their first home on the property which still stands today.

They designed and built a koi pond known as “Thelma’s pond,” now a popular photography attraction. Then, in 1973 the couple decided to retire to the Rio Grande Valley. Rather than sell their beloved gardens to developers, they chose to sell the property far below market price to Harris County as a place for education and public enjoyment. “The idea of bulldozers coming in here and destroying the work of nature that we had tried to preserve and learn about and learn to love and enjoy is hard to take,” wrote Thelma in a letter to Harris County in 1973. Today, the garden hosts some 350,000 yearly visitors and has plans to expand. In June, the gardens will reopen its Creekside Ramble and Storey Lake two areas that were damaged heavily by Hurricane Harvey. Other plans include building new production greenhouses on the southernmost part of the property. GARDEN FUN FACTS
+ Mercer Botanic Gardens began as a 14-acre property with small garden areas donated to the county by Charles and Thelma Mercer to be kept and maintained as public gardens
+ The center has the largest ginger collection in southeast Texas + The gardens have propagated several thousand “Mercer grown” vegetables and native plants that can be purchased by local residents
+ Mercer maintains a national seed bank of rare native species for restoration and research and a prairie preserve for 200 native species, four of which are rare 22306 Aldine Westfield Road Humble, Texas 77338 Hcp4.net/Parks/Mercer/ 713-274-4160

SPLASH INTO SPRING GET THE RIGHT POOL DESIGN FOR YOUR FAMILY WITH MIRROR LAKE DESIGNS

Cypress Lifestyle | April 2020
WITH TEMPERATURES WARMING UP, LOTS OF HOMEOWNERS MIGHT BE THINKING OF WAYS TO SPEND MORE TIME ENJOYING THE LONGER, SUNNY DAYS. If the warmer weather has you thinking about lounging poolside in your own brand new backyard pool, landscape architect and veteran pool designer Shawn Kelly has a few tips before diving into the process. “Remember that most families spend 90 percent of their time around the pool and not in it,” Shawn says. “With a good design, the swimming pool becomes a part of your landscape that supports outdoor living and entertainment.” Shawn, who’s been designing and installing pools for 40 years, owns Mirror Lake Designs, a landscaping and pool installation company. Shawn stresses the importance of keeping quality design a priority when installing a pool in your backyard. “Mistakes in pool design and construction are always costly,” Shawn says. “In this case, it’s too expensive to go cheap. A quality design considers how a pool is integrated into the garden.” Patios, seating walls, plants, shade structures and outdoor lighting are essential to develop a beautiful, livable outdoor space - not just the pool. Most of the families seeking Shawn’s services fall into three main groups: those with small lots who want courtyard pools; young families on a budget; and those looking for a more elaborate estate-style pool. No matter the situation, Shawn takes the time to first learn about a family’s intent for their backyard space before ever he ever starts a pool design. “Deciding which category matches your intent is the first step in adding a great outdoor living space to your home this year,” Shawn says. “With the assistance of an experienced landscape architect, you soon will be living the garden lifestyle.” 19022 Mirror Lake Dr. Spring, TX 77388 MirrorLakeDesigns.com 281-350-0515

ESTATE POOL This more elaborate pool design is ideal for the homeowner who wants their home and pool to be the center of holiday or family celebrations. The patio is set to accommodate larger groups with areas for outdoor cooking and mingling.
“THE ULTIMATE GOAL OF A POOL AND GARDEN DESIGN IS TO PROVIDE A WONDERFUL ENVIRONMENT FOR OUTDOOR LIVING.”
COURTYARD POOL BUDGET POOL Ideal for young families looking to save costs, this simple pool design allows for a fun, safe area for kids to enjoy the outdoors. Homeowners may choose to forego things like automatic controls, upgraded plaster or fountains with fire as a way to cut back on costs.

Commonly also called a garden pool, this size design is best suited for tiny lots with owners who appreciate smaller, intimate gatherings. Elevated planters and water walls enhance the pool while surrounding patio seating seamlessly connects the backyard to the home. Add landscaping and lighting to make this a cozy focal point of your home.

Whether or not you are trying to lose, gain or maintain weight, reading labels and understanding nutrition facts will help you make better choices for your body and ultimately feel better in your day-to-day.
PROTEINS Protein makes you feel full longer. If you eat a meal with little protein, you’ll feel hungry again pretty quickly, and it can be discouraging. But you don’t have to eat a huge steak to get enough protein. You can find it in cheese, nuts, seeds, spinach, eggs, avocados, broccoli, hummus, lentils—the list goes on and on! Mindful eating means taking note of how hungry you feel and eating enough protein to satisfy that hunger in a way that will last.
C A R B O H Y D R AT E S Carbohydrates are not your enemy. But, it is important to pay attention to how you feel when you eat them. If you eat a lot of carbs in one sitting, it can cause your blood sugar to spike, and when it drops back down, you can feel lethargic and maybe even irritable. By spreading your carbohydrate intake throughout your day and always pairing it with a protein, you can help your body regulate your blood sugar more effectively and feel more alert all day long.
F AT S Fats also help slow carbohydrates down so they don’t instantly turn into sugar in your bloodstream. Fats are important for energy, and it’s especially important to eat the right kinds of fats for your brain. For better concentration and memory, try to incorporate foods like salmon, avocados, nuts, seeds and olive oil. CONTINUED >

food. If you are eating a package of nuts as a snack, and you are not eating anything else with it, you may need a couple of packages to eat as many calories as you want for that snack. It’s not wrong to eat multiple servings! Focus on what your body needs.
You need a variety of vitamins in your day, so check the percentages and make sure you are getting lots of different nutrients. Vitamin C is great, but it is possible to have too much Vitamin C and neglect Vitamin A. Calcium and iron are important for strength and to avoid injuries, so make sure you get enough of those each day as well. An easy trick is to try eating a vegetable of every color each day.

Carbohydrates are broken down by dietary fiber and sugar. To feel fuller longer and to have a clear mind and avoid getting foggy, choose carbohydrates, such as wild rice, that have more dietary fiber and less sugar.

You are the best expert of you, and you get to make all of the final decisions for your body. Do your research, get all of the info that you can and then decide how you want to divide up your nutrition each day. One of the most effective things you can do is keep a log of your moods, how your skin looks, how your hair feels, your water intake and your energy levels. While your fitness goals are important, how you feel each day is so much more important. It’s easy to lose weight by dramatically cutting calories, but that can leave you feeling irritable with low energy, and it’s ultimately not worth it. Take care of yourself and think about how the choices you make will affect your health in the long run. And never forget that you are enough, just the way you are.
