SEPTEMBER 2019 PUBLISHER

Jeron Traphagan | jeron.traphagan@lifestylepubs.com Zach Traphagan | zach.traphagan@lifestylepubs.com

Adventures in Fashionland AH, THE SEPTEMBER ISSUE. Even as a midwestern mom, I find myself drawn to Vogue's September issue, lured in by the pouty models, impractical clothing and the heft of 200 pages of style that will someday trickle down to my local boutique. While my style is much more classic than trendy, I do like incorporating new pieces each season to keep me in step.

And, after repeated viewings of The Devil Wears Prada and eight years of avoidance, I screwed up my courage and staged my first fashion shoot for Northland Lifestyle. I can't thank all the people that collaborated with me enough—Catfish and Tater, Sundance KC, our fabulous models, Debbie, Charlee, and Courtney, and our intrepid photographer, Ashley. It was quite an adventure as we posed and preened in the lush woods in Excelsior Springs, so much so that we had to be towed out of it! The treehouse where most of our photoshoot took place was nestled back in the trees on the more than 200-acre lot owned by Melissa and Beau Claridge. Wildflowers proliferate and the landscape is hilly but passable in one of the couple's Polaris all-terrain vehicles. My minivan full of models was a little less prepared for the ups and downs (literally) of getting back to the treehouse. We got out to the site well but on the way back, a steep hill and fresh gravel proved to be too much for my not-so-little Town and Country. Even with a running start and low gear, we only made it up 75% of the way up the final hill.

shooting by the water and he not only unhooked the van but also popped an existing dent out of my bumper! I have a feeling that Beau might be the most interesting man in the world, despite what Dos Equis might have you believe!

Glamorous, huh? Stuck in the woods in a minivan? Luckily, we captured the last fleeting moments of twilight in some of Catfish and Tater's easy but stylish options. I hope you enjoy this issue. PUBLISHER’S LETTER

The September Issue HEY NEIGHBORS! It's September, so of course, that means that Anna Wintour and our editor, Rachel, are thinking about fashion. Luckily, there are a ton of hidden gems in the Northland when it comes to boutiques. While we may not have the Plaza or Halls, we have a wealth of options for unique but affordable clothing that can work for any occasion. As a mom on the go, I can appreciate a local boutique that makes it effortless to find an outfit last minute. Although currently, my closet has options that include styling my baby bump(!), I'm looking forward to meeting my new addition and getting back to my normal style groove. But no matter the phase I am in, I love supporting our local small businesses any way I can. Fashion may seem superficial at times but it plays a big part in self-image. As social media increases its influence in our lives, especially for our teenagers, it can feel exhausting trying to keep up with the ever-changing styles. On the flip side, fashion gives kids a creative outlet when they need one most. Hopefully, as everyone settles into the school year, they've found their own signature style and are rocking it! Personally, I like seeing styles come back around. I love the wide-legged jean that's coming back. Maybe I can find a pair at one of our local boutiques...I'll see you out shopping! Cheers,

mirror stands at attention for that ever-important onceover before facing the day. In addition to their clothing, which they rotate out with the season, Kruse and Trombello added a few personal touches to keep the room from being too utilitarian. For a stylish place to put on shoes, Kruse reupholstered his grandmother’s antique channel-back chair in a wool blackwatch plaid from nearby decor mecca Nell Hill’s. A nearby tray table holds a framed print of the couple and is perfect for catching the day’s watch selection. The duo took a cue from one of their favorite department stores, Halls, to organize a collection of colorful silk ties. By installing three simple towel bars, they created an artful way to access their favorites without digging through a crowded tie rack. (Kruse notes that this simple closet hack could also work well for ladies wanting to display favorite scarves or pashminas.) One of the couple’s favorite parts of the closet is the watch winder, which was a Christmas gift to each other. Three watches rotate to simulate the motion from daily wear or hand winding, and the rest of their collection rests in a matching box on the adjacent shelf. Both are available at Meierotto Jewelers. This couple has created a space that clearly says ‘we’ rather than ‘me,’ cleverly mixing organization and classic design from some of the unique resources the Northland provides. 18

As the fall approaches, it’s time to start layering, says Heather Chaney, owner of Catfish and Tater. The boutique, located just off the history Liberty Square, offers a variety of styles and brands, with new pieces arriving every week. The self-professed clothes lover buys with her customer in mind. “There are things in here that I would look terrible in but they are so cute that I have to order them and just find the right person for them,” she laughs. This fall, earth tones are grounding bohemian styles. Embroidered details perk up simple tops and lightweight sweaters take summery garments into fall. When the weather turns chillier, look for a chunky cardigan in patchwork as a versatile piece to go with any outfit. Jumpsuits and jeans still reign supreme but the skinny leg isn’t queen anymore. “The wide-leg look is really coming back,” says Chaney. THE

CROSSROADS HOTEL IN KANSAS CITY. The Crossroads keeps the spirit of the past alive by combining its two iconic buildings into a community-centered hotel. All 131 rooms and suites highlight the work of local artists, designers and purveyors. These artistic elements are found throughout the hotel, from the walls, furniture, lighting and amenities, complimenting the warm hardwood flooring, exposed brick and other original industrial details. Jeremy Bennett, the director of lifestyle at the Crossroads, says there’s no shortage of history at the hotel. “There is so much history in the two buildings that make up Crossroads Hotel,” Bennett says. “The larger of the two was a Pabst Blue Ribbon bottling and distribution center before prohibition. When prohibition rolled around, one of Tom Pendergast’s affiliates purchased the buildings, and the story is that Tom officed out of the building that is now Lazia, our modern Italian steakhouse. We’ve heard a bunch of fun stories since the building opened and I’m sure they’re all 100% true!” The unique atmosphere is exactly what you’d expect to find in the heart of this artistic historic district. “Adaptive re-use is in our company’s DNA. Taking old buildings that have a history and that have lived another life allows a hotel to open in a very different manner than just another new construction project. These walls have stories in them, and our team did a fantastic job of ensuring that those walls were left exposed along with a ton of original building CONTINUED >

GIVING BACK ARTICLE RACHEL C. MURPHY | PHOTOGRAPHY BY MARK MURTHA

DRESSED FOR SUCCESS CLAY COUNTY CLOTHES CLOSET PREPARES NORTHLANDERS TO THRIVE

IMAGINE GOING TO A JOB INTERVIEW IN YOUR UNDERWEAR. Seems ridiculous, right? But for those that are impoverished, this might as well be a reality. For every person that shouts, “Get a job!” on social media, there are many more desperately trying to find work while handicapped by inadequate resources at home. Clay County Clothes Closet seeks to ease that burden. The organization, staffed entirely by volunteers, is focused on providing adequate clothing for the entire family. While there are other clothes closets focused on providing for children, Clay County Clothes Closet is the only organization focused on servicing adults as well. And as we all know, you must dress for the job that you want. CCCC helps underemployed people gain the confidence to aim for better-paying positions, moving their families further off the ladder of poverty. CCCC has been meeting this need for nearly 60 years. Started by Church Women United, they used to count heavily on church members from a variety of denominations to act as volunteers and source donations. Now, church volunteers have dwindled, but the need has not. Executive Director Deborah Butler says that their numbers of needy swell every year as they see families referred from a variety of sources. The way that CCCC works is simple. When families are referred, they make an appointment to come to their facility in Kansas City North. Children are taken ‘shopping’ with a volunteer that specializes in their age group. Donations of new or gently used clothing are cleaned and organized ahead of time so that their experience is akin to a personal shopping trip. Every person is provided with new socks and underwear, a winter coat if necessary and clothes that will get them through a week. CONTINUED >

(CON TI N U ED)

For adults, they are also provided with new socks and underwear. For those that need it, they are given vouchers for work shoes, whether they are nonslip or steel-toed shoes. For those that need the simple protections that this type of footwear affords, these vouchers are a godsend. Those interviewing for jobs are fitted with business clothes. Everyone leaves with a coat that will keep them warm for the winter. For some children, their appearance at CCCC is a result of domestic violence or abuse. They are also gifted with a stuffed animal to take home as a small source of comfort. CCCC aims to make sure that children are clothed in a way that will allow them to hold their heads up amongst their peers at school, diffusing one more of the challenges that they face daily. While many of the resources at CCCC are from direct donations, they also receive donations from other organizations, such as the Hillcrest Hope Thrift Store. Any donations that aren’t suitable for CCCC’s uses are donated to other nonprofits that can use them such as City Union Mission. Nothing is wasted, and nothing is taken for granted. Butler says that the volunteers at CCCC take real ownership over their duties. “We typically put people in one area, and they run that area. One of our volunteers just retired. She had been volunteering for 55 years. It’s hard to find someone like that again,” says Butler. With millennials eschewing volunteering for the time being and many of CCCC’s volunteers are retiring, Butler wonders where the next generation will originate. With rising costs of living, those with time to volunteer are few and far between. CCCC may deal with clothing daily, but their ultimate goal is to give dignity to those that they serve. “I can’t tell you how many people have told us how great it felt to be treated like a human. When you’re impoverished, you’re fighting an uphill battle. Being treated with respect goes a long way toward changing your situation,” she says. If you would like to donate time, clothing, or money to the CCCC, please visit them at ClayCountyClothesCloset.org. 34

TIPS FOR FINDING THE SPARKLER THAT WILL LAST A LIFETIME ARTICLE MORGAN FLEMING, JEWELRY BY MORGAN

The Perfect Ring

IS IT TIME TO SHOP FOR AN ENGAGEMENT RING? Congratulations! Despite the magic of this special moment, engagement ring shopping can feel overwhelming, so here are a few tips from Jewelry by Morgan to help make that search just a little easier.

1. Consider her sense of style. Her style is what makes the bride-to-be unique and why you love her. Today’s couples frequently shop together for rings, and that can make it much easier to find “The One.” If your goal is to surprise her, consider what kind of jewelry she wears now. Is it simple and elegant? Delicate? Does she like statement pieces? What color metals does she wear? 2. Get help. Ask anyone you think might know what she would like (but can keep your secret!). Her friends, her mother, and your mom may be your best bet. Many brides-to-be will also have a Pinterest page ready to go with great ideas. Don’t forget to check on finger size. You want it to fit right out of the box if possible. If she has petite fingers, you may want to consider having a personalized ring made. 3. While that one perfect ring will become priceless to her, money does play a role in your selection. The old adage of “three months pay” is just that—old. Setting a realistic budget can help you get something you will love but can also afford. It is best to work directly with a jeweler since they can help you get the best value for your dollar. There may be some form of financing available as well. 4. Spend most of the budget on the diamond. The more ideal the diamond is, the more expensive it will be. Don’t get too caught up in grading though; it does not have to be perfect to be a beautiful, affordable diamond. Consider a lab-grown diamond as well. They usually look better than their mined counterparts and can be a great value. 5. Relax and try to have fun with the ring buying experience. It will be one of the most meaningful purchases you make in your relationship. It is the ring you and your bride will always cherish, and if you make it about how much you love her, that’s what you’ll remember.
