The team learned more about Simpson Housing’s annual Art 4 Shelter event which focuses on giving back to the community and helping to alleviate homelessness. Celebrating their 10th year in 2020, this unique fundraising initiative focuses on bridging art, artists, and a great cause. The Minneapolis Lakes team was also thrilled to speak with a few galleries around the city and although we cannot cover them all (I wish we could!), this highlights a few worth visiting. Nestled in Linden Hills, Everett & Charlie showcases pottery, painting, textiles, woodwork, sculpture, glass and so much more. In-gallery events bring artists to the forefront with meet & greets and mingling in a cozy and approachable atmosphere. Recently relocated, Northland Visions (known for their previous space

More square footage, a coffee bar, and the latest tech combined with a light and bright space showcase their incredible full model lineup of some of the finest vehicles on the road. Finally, it was great catching up with Kelly Keegan who is an established and reputable criminal defense attorney, on how to clear up past mistakes and clean the slate for 2020. As Minnesota starts to thaw, Minneapolis Lakes looks forward to seeing you out and about!

APPRECIATING LOCAL THREE GALLERIES YOU DON'T WANT TO MISS
Lisa Franke, "Red Roots" encaustic photography on panel
“I LOVE ART FOR ALL THE INTANGIBLE QUALITIES, THE WAY IT SPEAKS TO YOU IN A WAY THAT NO OTHER OBJECT CAN.”
GALLERY 360 Merry Beck opened Gallery 360 in June of 2000 in South Minneapolis. Her friend and mentor, Peggy Ryan introduced her to the Minneapolis art industry through her former business, Triptych Winchester Gallery, which was located in Gallery 360’s current space. When Peggy’s business closed, Merry started Gallery 360. With the help of long-term employee, Laurie Meurett and other talented staff, they shaped the gallery into what you see today. What makes Gallery 360 unique is their passionately driven space with an eclectic variety of local talents. Gallery 360’s tagline of “Art in Every Degree” sums up their ever-changing collection of fine art and craft. The space is comfortable, and non-intimidating where a person can come in looking for a party gift and leave with a painting for over their mantle. “I love art for all the intangible qualities, the way it speaks to you in a way that no other object can,” says Merry. When asked how she chooses art to fill her gallery, she comments, “My artist selection is based on what appeals to me as an individual and what I feel will interest my clientele, offering a range of prices to accommodate a variety of needs.” Merry is constantly reminded that it’s important to take chances to stay exciting. Art should be the fun part of your search while planning an interior. It’s important to make choices based on what moves you or conjures a memory or feeling; art should express your personality and be something that ARTICLE KASSI MIRANOWSKI 12

NORTHLAND VISIONS
Ken Bellanger started Northland Visions out of his home in the 1990’s. It began with gift packaging of unique Nativebased foods such as herbal teas, wild berry jellies, authentic Minnesota harvested wild rice, and flavored honey and syrup. Ken’s gift packaging business had a lot of success as local companies like 3M, Target Corporate, Honeywell, and General Mills purchased his goods to give as gifts to employees or visitors. With business continually growing, Ken decided it was time to open a storefront. He soon learned that he needed more than jellies and wild rice for his shop to succeed. He saw the potential in the diverse artistic talent from the Native Tribes of Minnesota and knew that he wanted to create a space for their work to be showcased. Ken partnered with his son Greg and together they found unique Native Artists and their art to bring to Northland Visions year after year. Greg and his wife, Marilynn, have taken over Northland Visions since Ken retired in 2008. After eighteen years at their location on Franklin Avenue, the shop recently moved in 2018 to a space twice the size, in the historic Miller Textile Building in Northeast Minneapolis. Northland Visions continues to grow and has a large selection of native beadwork, craft supplies, artifacts, sculptures, jewelry, and of course the Native-based jellies and wild rice that was the start of Ken’s idea twenty-some years ago. A criminal record can hold you back in many ways, from an arrest, to a common misdemeanor or a felony, even if you were never formally charged or convicted. It can result in difficulty when applying for a job or renting and owning a house or apartment. Over 93% of employers and companies perform some kind of background check. “I strongly believe that people shouldn’t be denied an opportunity due to a mistake they made in their life that they regret,” says Keegan. “This shouldn’t define them after they have rehabilitated.” This is where the option of seeking an expungement comes into play. (IDC)
BEGAN A NEW CELEBRATION OF ITS OWN — ITS 55TH YEAR IN BUSINESS. The company has a lot to celebrate since it launched in downtown Minneapolis on Jan. 7, 1965. While other businesses focus on selling more of their products online to cater to millennials, IDC has carved its niche in the market by offering a unique in-person buying experience. The contemporary and Scandinavian store features a massive space, with a 50,000-square-foot showroom in Edina and a 20,000-square-foot warehouse attached to it. In fact, it’s an especially popular place on weekends, says co-owner Michael Moller. “We’ve kind of gone counterintuitive,” he said. “We’ve just gotten bigger. We want people to come in and touch our furniture.” IDC currently occupies more than double the space it had in Bloomington. It has consistently grown over the years, Moller said. The business moved to its current space in September 2012. The family-owned company began by selling only Scandinavian models of furniture. But over time it has grown to include other contemporary home furnishings in their lineup of products. and around the world, IDC carries brands that families have come to know and trust. In fact, Moller says many of their customers are intergenerational families. They get to know families and then their children, who inherit family home furniture pieces or are ready for their next sofa, dining table or entertainment center.

continues down the family chain,” Moller said. Besides focusing on the in-person customer experience, Moller said another aspect of IDC’s success is its long-lasting vendor relationships. For more than 30 years, they have served as the largest Ekornes display in Minnesota. Ekornes is a Norwegian furniture company known for its high-end recliners that are endorsed by the

secret to longevity in business. So is its adaptability. Moller said that the company has held steady over time, despite the massive shifts in technology that have disrupted other industries. He has, however, noticed that bookcases aren’t as popular of a seller with the introduction of e-book readers and tablets. Another change in the home furnishing business is the decrease in home offices. With sleek, small and light laptops, more people utilize their couches and small desks as a place to work rather than a home office. Other products are being invented as technology changes. For example, some lamps and even sofas now include music players and phone chargers. “Our furniture continues to evolve as technology does,” Moller said. The massive in-person experience at IDC will give you anything you want and more — from sofas to tables, hutches to entertainment centers, beds to home lighting. As the company enters its 55th year in business, Moller and his family look forward to serving customers and their families for the next 55 years — and beyond. “We’re here willing to help whenever someone needs their next piece,” he said.

C R E AT I N G FOR THE COMMUNIT Y WHEN APPLE VALLEY RESIDENT AND PAINTER SHAINA MCCOY WAS A SENIOR IN HIGH SCHOOL, SHE DISCOVERED WHAT WOULD BECOME ONE OF HER GREATEST PASSIONS — CREATING AND DONATING ART FOR AN IMPORTANT CAUSE. aged to submit some of her paintings to Art 4 Shelter, an annual art sale with all proceeds going to Simpson Housing Services in Minneapolis, a non-profit organization that houses, supports, and advocates for people experiencing homelessness. So McCoy donated 33 paintings that year. “I wanted to be able to donate as much as $1,000,” she said. “I

This year’s Art 4 Shelter will take place on Wednesday, May 13,
SIMPSON HOUSING SERVICES
at music and arts venue The Fillmore in Minneapolis. This year is an extra-special event because it marks the 10th anniversary of the fundraiser. Many pieces of art cost just $35 — the cost for one night of shelter for someone who is going through homelessness. Some $90 pieces of artwork are available for purchase as well, giving buyers and artists a chance to make an even bigger impact with those pieces, which are larger than the $35 ones. The $35 works are 5″ × 7″ in size and the $90 works are 8″ × 10″ in size.

Since the event began in 2011, Art 4 Shelter has brought in a total of $723,000. That means all involved in the event have been able to provide 20,657 nights of shelter and housing for people experiencing homelessness. Additionally, the event gives emerging and established artists a place to showcase their work, creating a win for everyone in the community. For McCoy, she has also gotten additional professional experience over the years now that she sits on the Art 4 Shelter board of directors. “I love that I can give back to my community,” McCoy said. “It makes me feel really good to help people.” Board member Audra Williams has a background in both art and law. She sees Art 4 Shelter filling a unique niche in the Twin Cities area. “The intersection of a basic needs non-profit and bringing accessible art to an audience (and vice versa) really speaks to me. It’s kind of all my favorite things in one event,” she said. “It’s a fun and free event in the evening. You don’t see a lot of fundraisers that are so accessible.” She said she’s also personally benefited from buying some beautiful pieces from both local and national artists. “I’ve really expanded my art collection by adding some amazing pieces that I scored for just $35,” she said. “You can’t argue with that.” Williams says the event also supports sponsors, who benefit from the fundraiser as well, making Art 4 Shelter a venture that benefits everyone that comes into contact with the evening. “It gives our sponsors some well-deserved recognition,” she said. “They get to support a really cool and well-attended event that serves those experiencing homelessness and our community overall.” Art 4 Shelter takes place May 13 at The Fillmore, 525 N 5th St, Minneapolis.
