YOUR LOCAL

STACY BURTIN MILLS WHO IS THE INSPIRATIONAL WOMAN IN YOUR LIFE AND WHY? My Mom is an amazing

woman. Now that I’m married with a child, I truly appreciate her patience, her generosity and her

sacrifice. As a child and young adult, I often took this for granted. I am so proud to be her daughter. I pray that I am a blessing to my daughter the way she has been a blessing to me.

I like spending time with my family. Weekdays can be a little hectic, so we look forward to being together on the weekend. We make a point to plan something that we can all do together. Sometimes it proves to be a good lesson in compromise and negotiation for my daughter, but it always results in fun.

WHO ARE THE INSPIRATIONAL

WHO ARE THE

WOMEN IN YOUR LIFE AND WHY?

INSPIRATIONAL WOMEN

The most inspirational women in my life are women I have gotten to know through life and through reading. In the Bible, women like Sarah, Deborah, Ruth, and Hannah in the Old Testament, and New Testament women like Mary, Elizabeth, Anna, and Mary Magdalene have inspired me to new heights spiritually. In my life, a pastor named Vicki and a church friend named Suzanne have stood for all that I love and admire. My branch office assistant, Kathy, has also inspired me with her consistent faith, love, hope, persistence, and kindness. WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE PASTIME? My favorite pastime is to travel. Wonderful places I have had the privilege of visiting include the Greek Isles, South Africa, Italy, Portugal, Ireland, Scotland, England, Spain, Slovenia, Norway, Denmark, the Czech Republic, Poland, Jordan, and Morocco. The picture of me was taken in Morocco, where I held the kid of one of the goats that live in the Argan trees there.

IN YOUR LIFE AND WHY? At this time in my life I’ll have to say my two girls Celia and Charlotte. Both are completely different, yet equally inspiring. Celia is serious, wise, and inquisitive. Charlotte is optimistically innocent and finds joy in all things. Both girls I learn from! WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE PASTIME? Since it’s spring time, I’ll say this season. I love to witness the Earth change colors, the smell of trees, flowers, and fresh cut grass. As a child, I enjoyed watching thunderstorms roll in with my family and the fresh smell of rain.

Letter from the Publisher MAY 16 WAS THE DAY THAT MY DAUGHTER WAS SCHEDULED TO GET MARRIED. A year’s worth of planning, coordinating vendors and signing contracts was dismantled due to the virus. If you have ever planned a wedding you will understand the utter disappointment.

I remember at least one wedding disappointment that nearly ruined my entire wedding day. I had ordered a three-tiered cake with staircases shooting off the sides, adding two more large cakes and additionally another set leading off those for a total of a five-tiered cake (with a running fountain in the center). The cake was delivered with three-tiered cakes, instead of the five I had expected. The phone call to the baker, and the tears that ensued, sent my best friend into a panic. She reminded me to not let that ruin my day. I had lost control and felt helpless. I can only imagine how it feels to have to reschedule your entire wedding day. Yet, this daughter of mine is handling it with ease. In fact, she appears to be relishing it. Every negative is immediately turned into a positive. Like the little Pac Man eating power pellets, she just gains more energy from every individual negative thrown at her. She was giddy when

in May because the original date she had wanted in June was now available to her. She

can make this new date. Moving into her new home will be timed more efficiently.

As a mother, I have to say this makes me proud. Isn’t this exactly what we want to teach our children? Roll with the punches. Be flexible. Look for the blessings. Be grateful. Stay focused and positive. Learn that life won’t always go your way. Have some resilience and always remember what your purpose is. While we cannot control our situation, we can control our attitude and how we deal with it. Wishing everyone a beautiful month celebrating the women in our lives who support us, encourage us and love us unconditionally.

IN TYPICAL TEEN FASHION, LEE’S SUMMIT’S HOLLY MCDOWELL CAN OFTEN BE FOUND SCUBA DIVING, MOWING LAWNS, PLAYING SPORTS OR CONNECTING WITH OTHER STUDENTS FROM HER CHURCH. When she’s not doing these activities, she has another unique role— fulfilling her duties as Miss Missouri Teen USA. McDowell, 16, won her current title at a competition in Columbia, Mo. in December when she was just 15 years old. It was only the second pageant she had ever entered, and the experience has made a profound impact on her. “Something inside of me told myself that I better make the most of this night and just go out and do my best,” McDowell says. “I blocked everyone else out and focused on what I needed to do to win.” Her focus and determination paid off, and she will now compete for Miss Teen USA this summer. Lee’s Summit Lifestyle | May 2020

McDowell’s entry into pageantry came when she attended an open call for the National American Miss pageant last spring and was asked to compete in their Missouri event last August. She placed in the top 10 competitors overall and received first runner up for top model and second runner up for runway. Then last fall, someone mentioned she should consider the Miss Missouri Teen USA pageant. She did, and she gave it her all when competing as Miss Greater Lee’s Summit against 45 other girls from around the state in various categories such as interview, active wear and evening gown. “Hearing my name and title called as the winner—I can’t even put into words how that moment felt,” McDowell says. “I couldn’t believe this had just happened to me!” In addition to making multiple appearances throughout the year at places such as Children’s Mercy Hospital and the Special Olympics, McDowell is working with Restoration House and the Coalition on Human Trafficking to use her title and platform to raise awareness about human trafficking. “It was close to my heart because of how young the girls are,” McDowell says. “I want to inform young girls about the dangers of human trafficking and how they can easily be lured into it without even knowing what they’re getting in to.” After losing her grandparents recently, she is also passionate about advocating for Alzheimer’s and women’s heart disease. Suicide prevention and mental health is another cause close to her heart as she lost an aunt and uncle to suicide that she never had the opportunity to meet. McDowell has always been homeschooled, and last summer she traveled with students from her church, Abundant Life, to Jamaica, where they helped build a home for a single mother and served the community there. She’s also active in a small group through the student ministry at her church. When it comes to her plans for the future, McDowell is looking forward to competing this summer. Additionally, she would like to pursue a hospitality management degree in college and become a wedding planner so she can use her skills in organization and management to make the special day of others truly memorable. She has other fun ambitions including becoming a divemaster in scuba diving when she turns 18. She fell in love with scuba diving after a family trip to Hawaii and is already advanced certified. She wants to use this adventurous hobby to advocate for clean oceans. Overall, her faith motivates her in her pursuits as she says she seeks to put God first and bring Him glory. “When I pray, it just gives me peace, and I don’t know what I would do without that,” McDowell says.

New Encrypted Applications Gaining Prevelance In divorce and family law litigation, text, email and cell phone records are often important. In many cases, parties seek this evidence in discovery when it bears on relevant issues. Text, email and cell phone records can sometimes be relevant as to child custody. For example, it might relate to inappropriate behavior and conduct that could bear on the fitness of a parent. The possibilities can be infinite, but it can show drug and alcohol abuse, inappropriate behavior and activities or time away from the family and children. In states where marital misconduct is a factor, it can also be relevant. In other words, it could provide evidence of affairs. It could also provide evidence of gambling, illicit behavior or even physical or mental abuse. Electronic evidence may also be important as to income and hidden assets. Some parties might, as an example, get their paycheck stubs emailed to them. They also might have receipts and statements emailed to them relative to unknown marital assets or bank or credit card accounts. To get this information, lawyers oftentimes issue requests for production. In other cases, lawyers may issue subpoenas for this information to the other party or

third party carriers. A lawyer may also take a deposition or hire a private investigator. An increasing trend now is for parties to use encrypted applications to conceal communications that they do not want others to see. Three common applications are Wickr, Vaporstream and Confide. These applications boast military-grade technology where they assert that the communication is protected. The features vary by application, but the messages often selfdestruct after being read and do not have the name of the sender or receiver of a message on the same page. For lawyers, they have to be cognizant that individuals going through divorce or family law matters may be using these applications. For parties going through a divorce or family law matter, or where they reasonably anticipate litigation, an important question is whether they should use these applications. Ultimately, the big risk is that a court might conclude that a party is spoliating relevant evidence by using these applications. If the court concludes that a party is spoliating evidence, that party could be subject to sanctions in the family court. A family court judge might also conclude that a party using these applications has something to hide. Otherwise, why use applications like this? This may mean that

We are following safe practices and procedures and remain open for business

D r s

the party ends up getting an adverse result as it relates to important components of a divorce or family law matter. Ultimately, anybody going through a divorce or family law matter should speak to a lawyer about their specific situation. However, parties should also probably steer clear from these encrypted applications. While the privacy components may be appealing, and may conceal the exact nature of the communications, the appearance of having something to hide is likely not worth the risk. Nonetheless, encrypted applications are likely to become an increasing trend in divorce and family law litigation. The popularity, and ease of downloading these applications, is likely to make it an increasing trend. Dear Younger Me, PHOTOGRAPHY ART WORK BY CODY WHEELOCK

GOOD NEWS LITTLE ONE, MOST OF YOUR FEARS DON’T END UP AS TRUTH. Only imaginary thoughts that you have learned to put in their place. The years you felt voiceless and crippled with insecurities have been replaced with family and friends who love you and seek your advice and support. Uncertainty no longer takes up residency in your heart. You are free to love. Free to impact your world for good. Free to be all that God created you to be and free to dream your biggest dreams. Your love and compassion for others continues to grow. Each year brings you meaningful relationships, more healing and more grace for others to heal. Embrace the storms that life brings you. There is light at the end of each tunnel. You are stronger, wiser and your faith has deep roots because of life’s trials. The road ahead is always up from here!

DEAR YOUNG HILLORY, What

an

amazing

journey

you

have

ahead. The world will be ever changing with technology and the way people live and communicate. Thankfully, some important life principles won’t change, so as you live your life always remember these things: Share love unconditionally, and don’t let go of the people who unconditionally share it back. Find what brings joy to your heart and spend time doing it. Love your whole self and learn how to make the most of the individual gifts God has given you. Time in each day will never increase so stop fretting away precious moments. Worrying will get you nowhere. Realize you are a rare and beautiful work of art. There is no other like you. You’ll add new layers of paint each year of your life so paint playfully, paint boldly, paint imaginatively and never stop creating your masterpiece of you! Love,

DEAR YOUNGER ME, (CONTINUED)

DEAR YOUNGER ME, YOU ARE ENOUGH. You’re smart, beautiful and talented. Stop putting yourself down. People will want to push you down, but do not let them clip your wings. Keep reaching for the stars toward your goals and dreams, and never give up. That doctorate you always want, don’t wait for it. Go for it. Turn all your stumbling blocks into stepping stones. When you’re still stressing about the mud from the storm you’re in, look up. The sky is cleared. Move on. How we act, feel and think will make all the difference during life’s challenges. Find an older woman to confide in whose opinion you trust and character you respect. There’s so much to learn from her wisdom. Stick close to those that are true to you. They’re life’s greatest gifts. Volunteer more. It feels so good to give of your time and resources. Don’t take everything so serious. Smile, laugh and have fun!

PACK YOUR SMALL SPACES WITH A BIG PUNCH BY STARTING YOUR OWN CONTAINER GARDEN

IT MAY BE THAT YOU DON’T HAVE MUCH SPACE TO WORK WITH; MAYBE YOU ARE ALWAYS ON-THE-MOVE; OR, MAYBE YOU JUST SIMPLY COLOR TO YOUR SPACE. It doesn’t matter what your reason may be. Container gardening—the practice of growing plants exclusively in containers rather than in the ground—is a great way to pack some punch into a small (or portable!) space. With container gardening, there are almost endless possibilities. Whether you’re looking to grow decorative plants or edible ones, there’s likely an option for you— and it doesn’t have to be limited to simply growing herbs

Different plants grow best in different environments, so be sure to choose species that will thrive where you’ve decided to put them—making sure they are receiving the proper amount of sunlight and moisture.

Here are a few other things to be aware of when you get started: CONTAINER SIZES: Large containers may be easier to grow plants in than small since

they have more space for large root systems and larger amounts of soil retain more moisture. + CONTAINER DRAINAGE: Your container must have a drainage system—even if it’s just a few holes you drill in it yourself. For plants that need to be watered more frequently, consider self-watering containers. + CONTAINER MATERIALS: The fun thing about container gardens is that you don’t have to limit yourself. Get creative with the containers you use (while keeping the above information in mind)! We love repurposing vintage items into unique containers.

The containers you choose are going to largely depend on the type of plant you’re trying to grow and the best space and environment for it to grow in. If you’re looking for the bare basics, there are a lot of different vegetables — like cabbage, celery, green onions, lettuce and leeks — that can grow in water alone. If you’re looking for a way to use that vintage glassware or pitchers hiding in your cupboards, here’s your chance! If you don’t have a lot of counter space (or space in general for that matter), herbs don’t need a ton of room to grow. Consider turning several small planters into a win-
