Life is Art FEBRUARY IS OUR MONTH TO CELEBRATE ART—THOSE WHO MAKE IT AND THOSE WHO APPRECIATE IT. Whether it be via delectable food, vibrant painting or precise stone-cutting, a person’s craft of choice gives us a glimpse into their heart. The beauty of art is subjective—we're all drawn to it in different ways for various reasons, but in the end we usually learn something about ourselves. As you learn

HOW SWEET IT IS THE SUGAR SISTERS PROVE THAT HAPPINESS AND LUSCIOUS, SWEET TREATS GO HAND IN HAND

“HEY DEBBIE DOWNER, DON’T EVEN ASK. THESE BEAUTIES ARE THE BEST DESSERTS IN COLORADO! OUR SWEETS TASTE SO GOOD BECAUSE THEY CONTAIN COLOSSAL AMOUNTS OF BUTTER, SUGAR AND OTHER REAL INGREDIENTS. THAT MEANS THEY’RE NOT LOW-FAT, LOW-CALORIE OR LOW-ANYTHING AND THAT’S WHY COLORADO LOVES US. YOU WANT NUTRITION… EAT LETTUCE.” If you’ve had the honor of the Sugar Sisters experience, you’ve likely noticed this message gracing the box housing the dainties you so carefully coddled to the car. Make no mistake—while they lovingly provide gluten- and dairy-free options, their majestic mainstay is a true sugar and butter reality that translates to tremendous taste. That’s right—heaven’s wares are here, laid out in rows of fudgy fantastics and perfectly pink cake. Whether you’re dazzled by the happy hues of a Kooky Zoo Cookie Layer Cake Slice or lean toward the sinful solidity of a Salted Caramel Killer Stuffed Brownie, these two craft a confection for you. Soul sisters in the wiles of sugar, Rebekah Lydon and Molly Witt conjured their colorful concept while staring at the clouds of possibility during the long wait for their second audition of The Amazing Race. Their zany union in fast friendship is evident upon your first visit to their thought-provoking carbohydrate haven, and testament to their commitment to quality and community. 12

Despite the initial shakiness a new business can bring, these great gals match all round-up donations, presenting FHD with two checks every month. So tuck a cookie in cheek and tote some sweets home. LIVING THE CREATIVE LIFE IN CASTLE ROCK

THESE UNIQUE LOCAL LEADERS FROM DIFFERENT WALKS OF LIFE SHARE A UNITED LOVE OF ART

"Moonrise"

NICK LUCEY - NICKLUCEY.COM Prompting that visceral reaction in others is major impetus to those who create. The same holds true for Nick Lucey, the celebrated fine art photographer and graphic artist responsible for many of the iconic photos that represent Castle Rock in its authentic, true-grit reality. An origin he could really sink his teeth into after moving from Savannah, Ga in 2014, historic Castle Rock has proven excellent fodder for this world traveler who initiated his career as a photojournalist in the Marine Corps in 1987, represented Rodale Press’ Scuba "Rusty"

Diving Magazine for 15 years and later hosted television’s “In the Drink.” Nick may be an artist, but he is also a realist. There exists no exemption from life’s expenses, and this necessary evil means that art has to make business sense at the end of the day. This factor and the desire to create a mindful art movement in Castle Rock gave birth to the Castle Rock Artist Cooperative (CRAC), a nonprofit conjured by Nick and made whole by Paul Price and the Downtown Alliance. Newly formed last summer, CRAC already has over 30 members who convene to spark personal growth and bring the poignant joy of public art to the private sector. Much is in store for the artisans and citizens of Castle Rock through the formation of CRAC, including pop-up art shows, educational programs, community outreach and meaningful, custom-painted murals for your building or site. Residents are urged to support local artists by getting involved, attending art shows and buying the exceptional original art that can’t be found in a big box store. MICHAEL PEREZ –

MPARCHITECT.COM

He came by it honestly, and a man who can credit an award-winning architecture practice to the childhood machinations of fort-building is a man you should know. As he counted years, Michael Perez of MP Architect collected mad skills from the careful consideration of the architectonics of life, from designing the perfect indoor fort to constructing outdoor forts for the neighborhood kids. Mastery of subjects like ceramics, auto body work and carpentry also figured into the equation, with the talents of his life and education merging to lift him up as an expert in the art of structure. Michael became a licensed architect in 1995 and founded Legacy Custom Homes and Michael Perez Architect in 1998. A unique master of not only construction, but design as well, Michael specializes in fine custom homes, model homes, group homes and light commercial projects in the Rocky Mountain region. His design-build background allows him to deliver exact specifications relative to design, budget goals and craftsmanship. Adopting the utmost available to him as an architect, technology is indispensable to this well-rounded professional. Michael’s use of computer-generated imagery (CGI) to digitally render a dream home allows his clients to easily visualize their desired end product in 3D. Virtual reality promises to be a game changer in the world of architecture design. Creating usable, livable art is a foremost function for Michael. While the modern architecture movement with less design rules is now emerging, he finds himself practicing conscious restraint in that realm. Endeavoring to give warmth to these modern structures that own exposed structural elements and plenty of glass, he juxtaposes textures and colors—such as utilizing rough sawn wood floating over glass. His aspects of rough, smooth, dark and light meld to present art like no other. 20

ROBERT MICHAEL – ROBERTMICHAELGEMS.COM Spending your summers digging holes and smashing rocks may not be ideal for most, but it’s part of the thrill for the sake of art for Robert Michael of Robert Michael Gems. This miner, designer, silversmith, gem cutter and jeweler is in the game from start to finish, personally mining for most of the crystals and gemstones he uses to craft into modern, one-of-a-kind fine jewelry. While Robert does step into other western states to mine from "Mountain Rain" - Prasiolite and White Topaz in Sterling Silver

time to time, he specializes primarily in 14 Colorado gemstones and does the majority of his mining in Colorado. Personal mining is timeand effort-intensive—the amount of research, necessary physical force and the red tape involving claims make it especially trying at times. Robert pushes on, however, undeterred by the fact that half of the time he comes away with nothing despite having shoveled, picked and sifted through—literally—tons of rock. While he collected his first crystal at age 9, his affinity for math lead him to college and a successful banking career that lasted an impressive 43 years. Taught to facet stones by a friend ten years ago, this man of numbers is now thoroughly enjoying his second career, having shifted his precision to cutting and counting facets. He cuts an average of 100 facets into each stone, accounting for the molecular structure of the kind of crystal or gem and the angles at the bottom of them that must be absolutely precise for maximum sparkle. With assistance from his daughter and partner-in-shine Lauren Berry, who adeptly commands the marketing and the occasional co-designing and co-digging functions, Robert’s work is becoming known and sought by clients across the nation who come to him with an idea or doodle on a napkin. The glow of precision is far-reaching.

Castle Rock Lifestyle | February 2020

KRISTEN CAISSIE, CREATIVE DIRECTOR AND FOUNDER OF MOON CANYON DESIGN CO., created this beautiful flower arrangement as part of Jenni Kayne’s floral encyclopedia. This lush arrangement is comprised of early spring blooms arranged in a ceramic vase. The wabi-sabi aesthetic of the handmade vessel adds to the arrangement’s playful proportions. Earthy yellows, rich greens, and a touch of blue tell a color story that’s unexpected, yet warm and welcoming. Perfectly undone early spring blooms (Kristen’s favorite to design with) emphasize the meeting place of winter and spring. CONTINUED >

TWEEDIA LADY SLIPPER Characterized by the slippershaped pouch (or labellum) that sits between the petals, these orchids range in color from white and yellow to a deep pink and purple. The lady slipper might take four to sixteen years to produce a bloom, but it’s worth the wait— in comparison to other, more temperamental orchids, this type can be considered fairly low-maintenance.

RANUNCULUS Also known as the buttercup, these spring bloomers are coveted for their delicate layers of petals, resembling ruffled tissue or crepe. In a wide range of vivid shades, ranunculus can bloom from late winter to early summer.

26

Castle Rock Lifestyle | February 2020

NARCISSUS Daffodils are instantly recognizable by their six petals surrounding a trumpet-like corona, most often in variances of white, yellow, or both. The ubiquity of the daffodil dates back to ancient times, both medicinally and botanically. They have been said to get their name because the image of languid daffodils along a stream evoke the image of Narcissus gazing into his reflection.

This delicate perennial is coveted for its light fragrance and pale blue star-shaped petals. Found commonly in vines and trellises, tweedias are prime for an arrangement as they cut well and last long.
