The rest of that night was filled with joy and worry and the first twigs of all the nesting that would follow in the months ahead. I was—and still am—lucky to have that warm, motherly glow that I always heard people talk about, the one I always hoped to experience. And I'm even luckier to be startled, in the middle of any ordinary task, by the flicker of tiny feet inside this mysterious home within me. This child has already taught me so much about the larger things in life, like faith and love and family. These things I thought I knew so deeply before him were brought to new light. her early years when she, herself, became a mother. It was around that time that she decided to continue her career into nursing, which gave her the opportunity to see each patient as a whole person. With a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, followed by a Master’s in Family Practice and Women’s Health, Christy determined that she would practice women’s health and aesthetics because of the complete care she could give to this unique population of patients. For Christy, the most important work is in the details of the whole patient. While her practice started mainly with women, Christy has come to embrace more men as they are also a unique population with their own interests and concerns in the field of whole-body health and aesthetics. And now—drumroll—we get to have Christy here in Missoula at Northwest Plastic Surgery Associates. Christy specializes in neurotoxins, dermal fillers, PRP treatments (platelet-rich plasma, which is a therapy that uses injections of a concentration of a patient’s own platelets to accelerate the healing of injured tendons, ligaments, muscles, and joints), Sculptra® (helps stimulate your skin’s natuCHRISTY LOPP KNOWS THE FEMALE BODY.

T ONE H IN G HOW ONE LOCAL WOMAN LET CURIOSITY GUIDE HER LIFE’S WORK
HOW DID BUTTE GET ITS FIRST PAPER GIRL? Why do thousands of people go online every day to watch what’s going on at a ranch south of Missoula? Both answers are bookends to the life of SuzAnne Miller. She is 72 years old and has traced a storied line from Butte to Chile to Alaska, and back to Montana. SuzAnne grew up in Butte in the 1950s. Her brother slung newspapers each morning, and she wanted a route, too. However, a girl had never held that job before. The newspaper staff refused. When their reasoning collapsed under staunch argument from SuzAnne’s father, she became Butte’s first paper girl.

“‘Women can do what they damn well please,’ my father said. He, of course, was raised by women—his mother, grandmother, older sister, and a bunch of aunts. That upbringing gave him a belief that was way before his time,” SuzAnne said. In high school, she traveled to Washington, D.C. as part of Girls Nation, an annual civic training program run by the American Legion Auxiliary. There, SuzAnne spent an entire day with the Chief of the U.S. Forest Service. She even manned his desk for a mock meeting with Smokey the Bear. When the day was done, staff asked SuzAnne if there was anything else she wanted. “A job,’” SuzAnne told them. Days later, she returned to Butte with an assignment at the Highland Mountain Lookout. “They thought I would last two weeks. I was there two years,” SuzAnne chuckled. She shared a story from her last night on the mountain. “There was a horrible thunderstorm…lightning hit the radio transformer, and a fire started. I put it out and got out of the building. To minimize the chance of being struck, I had to get as small as I could with as little contact with the ground as possible. So, I waited out the storm squatting on my toes,” said SuzAnne.

ONE THING LED TO ANOTHER (CONTINUED)
On a recent visit to Butte, SuzAnne found herself looking up at that lookout from the valley below. Later, she wrote her thoughts down in a personal essay: How young I was, how much I learned. This place taught me to trust myself, be self-reliant, take risks, and enjoy my own company. I am grateful to that young woman for choosing that place as her launching pad—however much of her lives in me still. After those lookout years, SuzAnne graduated from The University of Washington with a degree in Biomathematics. Work took her to both Chile and Alaska. “In Chile, the fisheries department gave me opportunity beyond my abilities. I had to crawl my way up to what was expected of me,” she explained. Later, in Alaska, SuzAnne conducted research for the Department of Fish and Game. Eventually, she moved up the male-dominated totem pole to become Chief Biomathematician. More biometric research led her to develop the department’s first microcomputer network. In 1998, SuzAnne returned to Montana. She bought a ranch in Lolo, where she could care for her ailing parents, and named the property Dunrovin. She transformed the property into a guest ranch. Two guests return every spring—a breeding pair of ospreys. In 2012, U of M researchers approached SuzAnne about installing a camera with a live feed to monitor the birds. Eight years later, she’s expanded that single camera into four. With live feeds, demonstrations of ranch life, and more, followers can log onto DaysAtDunrovin.com to see what’s happening on the ranch at any given moment.

Missoula Valley Lifestyle | May 2020
“There’s nothing out there that’s anything like it,” SuzAnne said. Today, SuzAnne is a Montana ranch woman and tech entrepreneur. For her, it’s a natural fit. “This feels, in many ways, like a culmination of my life’s work. Had I not spent my career in research, U of M would not have approached us about the osprey project. I didn’t know anything about setting up live, online networks, but those years in Alaska gave me the confidence to tackle the technology. My love of science, the arts, and the outdoors guides what we create for our online community.” For SuzAnne Miller, a paper route isn’t just a paper route, and a ranch isn’t just a collection of mossy fence posts with weeds growing from aged cow pies. For her, there’s always been something more to discover. “When I hiked with dad, we couldn’t just go on a hike. I took a geology pick and a sample bag. I was curious about what we might find. That’s the way I approach life.” Visit SuzAnne and the Dunrovin Ranch at DunrovinRanchMontana.com.

TRAVEL DESTINATION A MOTHER-DAUGHTER GETAWAY TO ROME, ITALY
MAMA MIA!
22
Missoula Valley Lifestyle | May 2020
ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY AMELIA PAVLIK
I WAS AWESTRUCK. The Colosseum’s ancient curves and crags offered a moment of complete marvel. It showed me just how magnificent of a moment it was to stand inside this bucket-list destination. What made the moment one that I’ll never forget is that my mama was standing next to me. Since I was a little girl, my mother, Kathy, and I have traveled together everywhere from Santa Fe to Switzerland. So, when an airline ticket sale offered the opportunity to take her on her maiden voyage to Rome, I jumped at the chance. If you’re in the mood for a Roman holiday of your own and are blessed with a travel-loving mama or other female in your life, here is what mama and I suggest you include on your itinerary: FRIDAY After a day of travel, I was thankful to see Daniele, the driver for The First Roma Arte (our Rome home), waiting for us in arrivals. As we made our way to Rome’s historic center, he made the 45-minute drive peaceful and pleasant. When we arrived at the boutique hotel, we were greeted with glasses of Prosecco and escorted to our junior suite. The cozy-but-chic room was decorated in lush blues and white, and was appointed with twin beds and a view of the peaceful side street that the property is tucked away on. Location is everything for us when it comes to our homes away from home, and the Arte doesn’t disappoint. Sights such as the Spanish Steps and Trevi Fountain are only a 10-minute walk away, and St. Peter’s Square is about a 15-minute walk. CONTINUED >

The other major draw of this hotel is the year-round rooftop bar and restaurant, Acquaroof, where you have a panoramic view of the city from above. This is also where breakfast is served every morning. It was the perfect place to take in a picturesque sunset and toast our arrival over Aperol spritzes. We ended the evening downstairs with our first Roman dinner at Aquolina, which is a Michelin star restaurant known for its playful and artistic take on Italian dishes. Over scallops with bone marrow (that involved Rice Krispies) and a mascarpone-filled pasta covered with tidbits of fresh anchovies, we created our game plan for roaming around Rome. Talk about food for thought! SATURDAY AND SUNDAY Each morning started with a decadent American breakfast on the rooftop (think everything from pastries and fruit to eggs prepared to your liking). Saturday we focused on seeing the Colosseum, Palatine Hill, and The Forum, thanks to a three-hour tour from Dark Wonder. (FYI, I’m telling you—book the tour to see the Colosseum to avoid wasting hours in line.) Under a blue sky, we learned the history behind each spot from our fabulous guide, Kylie. Mama and I enjoyed dinner that evening at a spot about a 10-minute walk from the hotel, Trattoria Otello alla Concordia. After a casual (but fulfilling) meal of lasagne bolognese and fried artichokes and a bottle of the house Chianti, we strolled home under a crescent moon. Sunday, mama and I headed across the Tiber River to pay our respects to St. Peter’s Square and then crossed back over to find Pizzeria da Baffetto, a pizza spot that had been recommended to Kathy. Typically, there’s a line out the door, but we managed to sit down immediately and watch our zucchini flower pizza be created before our eyes. By the end of lunch, the rain had begun. But, we continued our wanderings to mustsee sights like Palazzo Navona and the Pantheon, stopping here and there for a cappuccino and aperitivo. Dilla was our Sunday dinner spot (located next door to Otello). The ambiance was cozy and warm on the rainy evening, and the fettuccine with black truffle cream sauce and Roman artichokes that we devoured were exactly what our bellies needed after a long day of walking. MONDAY It’s wonderful to share the moments I’ve described with mama but there are things I enjoy doing that she has no interest in—and vice versa. I spent much of Monday indulging in the spa at Hotel de la Ville (another short walk away at the top of the Spanish Steps) while mama took a bus-tram combo to check out the Trastevere neighborhood and discover more mind-blowing pizza. With its amenities like a salt room, plunge pool, and relaxation room with infrared loungers and a screen showing scenes from nature, this spa was the perfect spot to spend a rainy afternoon. (BTW, non-hotel guests can purchase a day pass.) Plus, the pedicure I had was one of the most relaxing of my life, as I was lying on a massage table. That evening, in the same way we began the trip, we toasted with drinks on our rooftop. For dinner, we decided to complete the trifecta of restaurants on the corner of Villa Vitoria and Via Mario de’ Fiori, and slurped up our last bowls of fettuccine with black truffle cream sauce in between sips of wine. A dolce ending to our Roman holiday. CityLifestyle.com/MissoulaValley

PACK YOUR SMALL SPACES WITH A BIG PUNCH BY STARTING YOUR OWN CONTAINER GARDEN
IT MAY BE THAT YOU DON’T HAVE MUCH SPACE TO WORK WITH; MAYBE YOU ARE ALWAYS ON-THE-MOVE; OR, MAYBE YOU JUST SIMPLY COLOR TO YOUR SPACE. It doesn’t matter what your reason may be. Container gardening—the practice of growing plants exclusively in containers rather than in the ground—is a great way to pack some punch into a small (or portable!) space. With container gardening, there are almost endless possibilities. Whether you’re looking to grow decorative plants or edible ones, there’s likely an option for you— and it doesn’t have to be limited to simply growing herbs

Here are a few other things to be aware of when you get started: CONTAINER SIZES: Large containers may be easier to grow plants in than small since
they have more space for large root systems and larger amounts of soil retain more moisture. + CONTAINER DRAINAGE: Your container must have a drainage system—even if it’s just a few holes you drill in it yourself. For plants that need to be watered more frequently, consider self-watering containers. + CONTAINER MATERIALS: The fun thing about container gardens is that you don’t have to limit yourself. Get creative with the containers you use (while keeping the above information in mind)! We love repurposing vintage items into unique containers.

The containers you choose are going to largely depend on the type of plant you’re trying to grow and the best space and environment for it to grow in. If you’re looking for the bare basics, there are a lot of different vegetables — like cabbage, celery, green onions, lettuce and leeks — that can grow in water alone. If you’re looking for a way to use that vintage glassware or pitchers hiding in your cupboards, here’s your chance! If you don’t have a lot of counter space (or space in general for that matter), herbs don’t need a ton of room to grow. Consider turning several small planters into a win-

LOCAL’S CHOICE EVERYONE DESERVES A LOCAL SPOIL.

PA M P E R E D
I’M A BIG FAN OF SELF-CARE. Actually, it might be classified as self-spoil in my case. I attribute a healthy attitude, good work ethic, and physical strength to my weekly (if not daily) consciousness of what my body or mind needs. In my experience, that kind of intuition breeds creativity, healthy relationships, and overall health. And it’s not to say that I don’t beat myself up. I’m an avid horseback rider who loves the rush of flying through the air over a jump or galloping up a steep mountainside only to stop at the top and take in the vista while we both catch our breath. Last year, I threw a leg over a wild mustang for the first time in my life and several months later took a good fall off my trusty steed mid-competition. Embarrassingly enough, I also threw my back out during a yoga class, ahem, gentle yoga class. I also soothe these sores with lattes and donuts and chocolate cake (my ultimate weakness) but the other half of the coin are these things: deep tissue massage (Sorella’s Day Spa), a good chiropractor (Rockpoint Chiropractic), reiki (Inner Peace Reiki), and a really good green smoothie (Green Source). Balance, to me, is being broken and being put back together time and time again. In the midst of your day-to-day duties, don’t forget to kick your feet up with a good read, book the massage, or call the babysitter just because you need a break. I’ll be raising a glass to you!
