So, if you’ve got your own boat, come out and be part of it for free.”

One of Amy’s favorites, paddle board yoga, has really taken off this year. “The teachers keep it pretty low to the board,” says Amy, “so it’s really a beginner level, and you get to turn it into whatever you want it to be. I like that you don’t have to be a kayaker and that you can go for just an hour.” There’s a $5 fee to give to the instructor, but you can bring your own board or rent one. Although paddling lessons are available, Andy says, “Most of the people want to go out by themselves, and I’ve made laminated maps that are super easy to understand.” He adds, “Something really awesome about this place is that you can paddle up the Little River and either float back the same way, or you can go around Germany Island and float back down the Savannah River, then come back to our location.” Adventures can last a few hours or all day. “About half-way up our paddle route is a sandbar, and that’s where a majority of people go,” says Amy. “They paddle an hour up the water, anchor their boats, and hang out all day. Then they paddle back at sunset.” Having Outdoor Augusta so close to the heart of Evans means quick access to the outdoors, including summer camp for kids! Amy says, “I love that you can be doing your daily life, and then 5 minutes down the road, you can go do something outside for 2 hours.” Outdoor Augusta rents paddle boards, single & double kayaks, and canoes for individual use or to use during their guided tours. beyond the fairway A LOOK AT PAUL LESTER, THE LEGEND IN GOLF PHOTOGRAPHY

AT THE AGE OF 19, PAUL LESTER GOT HIS FIRST TASTE OF GOLF PHOTOGRAPHY. He says, “I started taking pictures as a teenager out in Los Angeles where I grew up. I started off wanting to be in the motion picture business because my dad (actor William “Buddy” Lester) was an entertainer. My dad liked to play golf in celebrity tournaments, and one day he said ‘Hey, why don’t you bring your camera out there?’ And that’s how it all started.” With 50 years of pictures in his repertoire, Paul has recently pulled out some of the best and unseen photos to share in his new book Beyond the Fairway: Timeless Images from Legendary Golf Photographer Paul Lester. “I really enjoyed doing the book,” says Paul. “It’s kind of a history book, and it all has a golf tie-in. It’s for people who know the older players.” With the help of Abbigail Remkus, Paul chronicles the memories tied to each photo.

The book includes special behind-the-scenes moments with golf legends Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Payne Stewart, and Gary Player; celebrities Dinah Shore, Bob Hope, James Garner, Howard Cosell, and Gene Autry; and several U.S. Presidents. You see, Paul’s job is unique in that he is often the sole photographer hired by corporate sponsors to take pictures at events. Paul explains, “Almost every event has an evening part of it, and I’m the guy that was there during the evening. At those times, the family would often come, and I get to see the [players and celebrities] when they are behind the scenes – beyond the fairway.” Paul’s exclusive access allows him to capture private moments like the meeting of Jack Nicklaus and Ben Hogan at the 1988 Centennial of Golf event in New York when Jack Nicklaus was named Player of the Century. “Jack Nicklaus was walking one way, and Ben Hogan was walking the other way,” Paul remembers. “They saw each other and were in awe of each other – two of the greatest names. And I’m kind of standing back, waiting to shoot the picture because I knew they’d both want that picture. When they finished talking, they looked at me and I hit this photo of the two of them that’s in the book.” Paul’s frequent contact with players and their families led to great friendships with many of them. “I took a lot of photos that they wanted, and I gave them a lot of photos, and they really loved them. They could also trust me,” Paul reflects. “They knew that no matter what pictures I took, I wasn’t going to ever sell them to some kind of tabloid. They can be themselves around me and know that I’d never ever make them look bad. And still to this day, that’s the story.”

Twenty years ago, this self-proclaimed “California boy” set up residence right here in Evans. He says, “In 2000, I was shooting the Masters, and I was introduced to Brenda Remkus, who was born and raised in Augusta. She’s been a great supporter and has traveled with me all over the world working. I wish I was here more often, but right now, I’m a traveling guy. I go all over to photograph mostly golf: pro golf, celebrity golf, charity golf, corporate golf. I go back to California because my daughter, Jillian, lives there and because that is where most of our jobs started. BOB KENDRA In my younger days as a golf professional, I worked for Arnold Palmer at the Bay Hill Club and Lodge in Orlando. One particular day, I was working in the pro shop, and Mr. Palmer, as we called him, came up to me and said, “How would you like to go home and see your folks?” I said, “Yeah! I’d love to do that,” so he told me, “Well alright. We’re going to be leaving about noon.” That meant I got to fly on his Learjet. He piloted the jet, and I was home in less than two hours. It was a pretty cool experience just to be able to stop in and see my folks as I hadn’t seen them in a while. That was one of the many experiences that I had at Bay Hill. AL HOLLOWAY We have two guys, a son and his father, that come up to Rocky Branch about three times a week. They’ve been doing this about eight or nine years. And he asked me one day, “During the tournament, I’ve got my whole family coming in. Can I make three tee times?” I said, “Yeah.” He said, “Everybody’s going to be staying at my house, and we’re just going to play golf.” They had four tickets and twelve guys, so every day, somebody would pull a ticket, and the rest would play golf. Well, the next day, I’m working the restaurant, and I look up and there’s Phil Niekro, Hall of Fame pitcher for the Atlanta Braves, paying for everybody. We spoke, and we talkied about my parents, and he wrote them both a very nice note and sent some things to them. Ever since that day, when he comes in, he just plays golf. He’ll get a drink with me and Melanie at the bar and talk about baseball. He’ll tell us stories about funny things that go on behind the scenes and stories that will touch your heart, things they do for others. He’s a Hall of Fame friend as much as he is a Hall of Fame pitcher. DANIEL MORRIS My friend Steve Beasley and I used to play, and one day he wasn’t putting very well, and he was so frustrated that he started to break his putter. But as he went to break it over his knee I said, “Woah!” because I had always liked it; it was an old Wilson Blade putter. He gave that putter to me, and I’ve used it ever since that day over 25 years ago. Steve passed away over nine years ago now, and I still think of him a lot, especially when I’m playing golf.

PROTEINS Protein makes you feel full longer. If you eat a meal with little protein, you’ll feel hungry again pretty quickly, and it can be discouraging. But you don’t have to eat a huge steak to get enough protein. You can find it in cheese, nuts, seeds, spinach, eggs, avocados, broccoli, hummus, lentils—the list goes on and on! Mindful eating means taking note of how hungry you feel and eating enough protein to satisfy that hunger in a way that will last.

C A R B O H Y D R AT E S Carbohydrates are not your enemy. But, it is important to pay attention to how you feel when you eat them. If you eat a lot of carbs in one sitting, it can cause your blood sugar to spike, and when it drops back down, you can feel lethargic and maybe even irritable. By spreading your carbohydrate intake throughout your day and always pairing it with a protein, you can help your body regulate your blood sugar more effectively and feel more alert all day long.

F AT S Fats also help slow carbohydrates down so they don’t instantly turn into sugar in your bloodstream. Fats are important for energy, and it’s especially important to eat the right kinds of fats for your brain.
