NEAR APRIL 22, PEOPLE AROUND THE WORLD RETURN TO THEIR ROOTS, LITERALLY, AND TAKE STOCK OF ECO-FRIENDLY PRACTICES AND ENVIRONMENTAL INITIATIVES. Though the days of actual observances vary by group, the April 22 date was founded in the United States by US Sen. Gaylord Nelson in 1970. CULINARY CREATIONS ARTICLE RACHEL MATERNE

RACHEL IS A SELF-ADMITTED CAKE ADDICT, AND HER BLONDIE’S BAKE HOUSE CUSTOMERS ARE HAPPY SHE’S THAT PASSIONATE ABOUT FOOD AND DESIGN.

WHIP UP CREAMY, LIGHT BUTTERCREAM FROSTING WITH VANILLA VERVE FOR CAKES OR CUPCAKES

She loves making cakes and desserts for events, but says a large part of her heart is focused on weddings. “I dream of cakes all day, and let’s just say they aren’t traditional. There’s nothing wrong with tradition, but I love weird, eccentric and different designs. It’s not often that a bride gives you the opportunity to try something new, but this is where I like to shine. If you want something totally unique for your day, give me a call,” Rachel invites.

INGREDIENTS + 1 pound butter, room temperature + 3 tablespoons of mascarpone (essentially Italian cream cheese, but made from whole cream), room temperature + 1 teaspoon vanilla extract + 1/2 teaspoon salt + 1 pound powdered sugar + 1 tablespoon heavy cream DIRECTIONS Cream together the butter and mascarpone until smooth. Add vanilla and salt, mix until combined. On low setting of mixer, add all powdered sugar to the bowl of prior mixture. Add heavy cream. Increase to a high speed of mixer and whip for 3 minutes minimum. This recipe frosts one 8-inch cake or one to two dozen cupckes, depending on individual desired heighth and coverage of frosting. TIPS + The higher the butterfat content in the butter, the better the outcome. + In high quality mascarpone, the vanilla improves flavor greatly. + Make sure ingredients are at room temperature to ensure a smooth texture. 214.949.9979 rachelmaterne@yahoo.com BlondiesBakeHouse.com 26

your UNDERSTAND WHAT’S IN YOUR FOOD FOR MINDFUL EATING

nutrition

body + soul

MINDFUL EATING MEANS KNOWING WHAT IS IN YOUR FOOD, HOW IT IS AFFECTING YOUR BODY AND TAKING THE TIME TO FULLY APPRECIATE THE NUTRIENTS AND FLAVORS YOU ARE TAKING IN. Whether or not you are trying to lose, gain or maintain weight, reading labels and understanding nutrition facts will help you make better choices for your body and ultimately feel better in your day-to-day.

PROTEINS Protein makes you feel full longer. If you eat a meal with little protein, you’ll feel hungry again pretty quickly, and it can be discouraging. But you don’t have to eat a huge steak to get enough protein. You can find it in cheese, nuts, seeds, spinach, eggs, avocados, broccoli, hummus, lentils—the list goes on and on! Mindful eating means taking note of how hungry you feel and eating enough protein to satisfy that hunger in a way that will last.

C A R B O H Y D R AT E S Carbohydrates are not your enemy. But, it is important to pay attention to how you feel when you eat them. If you eat a lot of carbs in one sitting, it can cause your blood sugar to spike, and when it drops back down, you can feel lethargic and maybe even irritable. By spreading your carbohydrate intake throughout your day and always pairing it with a protein, you can help your body regulate your blood sugar more effectively and feel more alert all day long.

F AT S Fats also help slow carbohydrates down so they don’t instantly turn into sugar in your bloodstream. Fats are important for energy, and it’s especially important to eat the right kinds of fats for your ARTICLE HAYLEY HYER

PARTING THOUGHTS

Corners of the Heart THIS VISUAL ARTS GUILD OF FRISCO PRESIDENT OPENS HER HEART TO OTHERS ARTICLE LINA RINCÓN

I HAD THE HONOR TO RECENTLY BE ON A SPEAKING PANEL ALONGSIDE LINA. We quickly realized we connected at a heart level. When she shared the story behind this painting, I knew immediately it would be an incredible fit for Corners Of The Heart. ~Becka. My current paintings are about choosing to love or be loved, because I believe those who love makes things better. Painting is my way of expressing myself and my way to escape the rest of the world, particularly when feeling frustrated. But I also like to use art to communicate with others. I knew I liked art from a very early age. After growing up in Colombia in South America, I worked in interior design and decoration. When I moved to the United States in 1999, I again realized how much I like exploring equally between art and cultures. I’ve lived in Frisco since 2012, and I really appreciate the cultural blend of this community. I got back into painting with acrylics and oils, mainly painting dancers and horses. For my new series, I’ve been focusing on Romance and Love. As an artist, we always have a story to tell. I feel love is like a prism with different colors. The story behind the painting I’m sharing here is that I used neutral colors in the heart to represent the equality, because no matter what colors we have or feel, we’re going to choose love. The heart is open--not broken--to have space for more and more love. That is the way it should be. And finally, the heart is surrounded by the color red to represent the human blood that is the same for all of us. As a full-time artist and an art teacher, I’m extremely passionate about the arts, and I work hard at making Frisco a true destination for the arts through the Visual Arts Guild of Frisco. Please join me in celebrating originality in our community, and by adding warmth, humanity, character and inspiration into our city through art. ArtitudeArt.com VAGF.org
