In this year's Home issue, we take a peek into a Parkville home that has attained that elusive status—the place where the kids want to hang out. The home, built by Jay Jackson Builders, reflects its owners' unique backgrounds, including architectural details from their hometowns. Nell Hill’s has always been a destination for design junkies and it's only getting better. Check out their newly expanded design lab on page 20. NORTHLAND COUPLE TAPS INTO THEIR BEGINNINGS TO CREATE A HOME THEY LOVE ARTICLE RACHEL C. MURPHY | PHOTOGRAPHY AARON LEIMKUEHLER

Northland Lifestyle | March 2020

WHEN ANTHONY AND NICOLE VERACHTERT DECIDED TO BUILD, THEY KNEW WHERE THEY WANTED TO BE--PARKVILLE. They also knew who they trusted to build their new home--Jay Jackson Builders. The resulting home is a highly personalized version of the 3500 square foot, 1.5 story Cory layout. The smaller footprint was an intentional choice for the Verachterts. “I have friends that have eight and ten thousand square foot homes. And they are impressive, but after a while, they also seem like a lot to maintain,” says Anthony. “There’s only four of us. I wanted to focus our money on creating things we would enjoy, not just having a lot of unused space.”

“Jay is just such a pleasure to work with,” says Nicole. “He’s trustworthy and just does wonderful work.” The house still has more potential--the basement is currently unfinished by design. That’s where the family practices their hockey goals. And that’s the beauty of the home--it’s exactly right for the active lives that they lead. This cozy custom home will continue to evolve for years to come.

ASK ANY DESIGNER THAT HAS CROSSED THE RIVER WHERE THEIR FAVORITE SPOT FOR THOSE ‘WOW’ PIECES IS, AND THEY WILL POINT TO NELL HILL’S. This bastion of great design was founded by Mary Carol Garrity in Atchison, KS in 1981, but their second location at Briarcliff Village has become an institution. When Garrity was ready to retire, Katie Laughridge saw an opportunity she couldn’t pass up. “I’ve always thought that Nell Hill’s was an amazing business and that Mary Carol was an amazing entrepreneur and human, and when I heard that this was an opportunity, my husband and I just thought we had to try it. My husband owns his own business and we had always thought that I might do something on my own as well. I knew that if I was going to do something that I was going to dedicate my life to, I wanted it to be something that I could have a lot of fun with but also that meant something to our community,” says Laughridge. While she had always assumed that this business would present itself later in life, in fact, Nell Hill’s presented itself just as Laughridge and her husband were starting their family. Now, she has two babies--a three-year-old and Nell Hill’s, which has been teaching her just as much as her toddler. Laughridge says that she spent much of 2019 learning the ropes and getting into the swing of day to day operations. As she settled in, she’s found opportunities to leave her signature on the store. Her experience

As a mom of a toddler, she’s really tuned into the performance fabrics. We are also bringing in a new kids and baby line in April. The overall aesthetic is the same but it’s another way for Katie to share her life through the store, just like Mary Carol did,” says Karlyn Kubin, marketing manager. Nell Hill’s continues to be a one-stop-shop for those looking for statement pieces for a perfectly dressed dining table, oh-so-comfy bedroom, or an intimate office setting. Keeping a finger on the pulse of the design world has always been their forte and now Laughridge infuses the venture with fresh enthusiasm and energy. With a healthy dose of parmesan cheese, these were alternately soft and crispy with just the right salty bite. On a subsequent visit, breakfast called my name. While you won’t find black pudding on the menu (a shame, really), there is an Irish breakfast that includes tomatoes, mushrooms, beans, bacon and sausage and your choice of eggs along with either toast or fruit. I opted for the corned beef hash, which was a lovely bowl full of carbs with perfectly crisp potatoes intermixed with chunks of corned beef, topped with a runny egg. It hit the spot. For lunch or dinner, the menu features several handheld options including a Reuben, a patty melt, and a meltie (grilled cheese), as well as a Chixn Sammitch. Their version of a chicken sandwich features buttermilk brined roasted chicken breast topped with swiss cheese, red onion, tomato, arugula, and bacon and smeared with mustard aioli. The blend of flavors is perfect, as is the pillow-soft ciabatta bun. With a side of those hand-cut fries, this sandwich hits the spot. The menu also features a few entrees including beef stew made with Guinness, Guinness-battered fish and chips, and lamb chili. Desserts change daily. The Craic fits well into downtown Parkville-its small size and friendly vibe is practically an analogy for the town itself. The building even features three AirBnBs upstairs for guests that want to take full advantage of downtown Parkville’s walkability. For more information, visit TheCraicOnMain.com. 32

Most food subscription boxes will allow you to choose a delivery day and time frame that works best for you. Your grocery items will be packaged as intuitively as possible, with any refrigerator items tucked in with ice packs. Bonus: You can reuse the insulation and ice packs in kids’ lunch boxes, on road trips or in your own lunches at work.

ingredients + Prep

Depending on what you order, you may need some of your own supplies. When you select your meals, think about what you will need to cook the food in and if any other kitchen utensils would be helpful. Have them ready to go so you don’t have to make any last-minute trips to the store, defeating the purpose of getting your box delivered! If the meals are foods you would enjoy reheated, you could do all of your cooking the day you get the box to meal prep for your week, or you can just store the ingredients to the other meals in your fridge and cook them throughout the week.

cooking

If you’re a little less-experienced in the kitchen, meal kits are great for learning! Read the instructions carefully before you get started so you don’t feel frazzled while the heat is up high, and take your time. If you are a more seasoned chef, feel free to take your own spin on the recipes and add some extra flavor or swap out ingredients to make it perfect for your palate.

This is the really fun part! It’s time to start taste-testing. Make a note tab in your phone for tracking what you love and what isn’t your favorite. That way, when it’s time to select more meals, you know what you have tried and what you absolutely have to try again. Don’t forget to ask your family what was a hit and a miss. Who knows— maybe the kids love some of the Purple Carrot recipes and don’t even notice how many veggies they are eating!

TREND SETTER

FLORAL DESIGNS ARE MAKING A COMEBACK JUST LIKE FASHION, TRENDS IN INTERIOR DESIGN TEND TO CIRCLE BACK FROM PREVIOUS DECADES, AND THAT IS CERTAINLY TRUE WITH THE USE OF FLORALS AS THEY ARE BACK

IN FULL BLOOM. Decorating with florals is a great way to bring the outside in. Adding simple pops of color with mother nature in mind can add a whimsical and playful touch to any room and creates a feeling of freshness and subtle femininity. We are sharing a few ways that area KC designers are using floral patterns. A. I found this Deer Head in the back of Anthropologie. It called my name as I was just starting a kitchen remodel at the Lake of the Ozarks. I ended up using this piece as the focal point of the entire space! My clients loved it!” -Jenny Manka www.mankainteriors.com B.This playful floral patterned drape was carefully selected to integrate with the rooms colorful palette.-Tran+Thomas Design https://tranthomasdesign.com C. I love brining the outside in whenever possible. I added these the psychedelic floral chairs to what was otherwise a masculine dining room for a bit of whimsy!”- Jenny Manka www.mankainteriors.com D. I love these curly willow branches because

they add color and movement to an otherwise empty corner. Plus they tie the room to the beautiful trees outside. --Jennifer Surface, Surface to Surface Design and Construction Facebook.com/ surfacedesignsandart/ E. Large scale floral draperies are a great way to pack a punch in a space with the oversized scale and bright colors.- Nest Interiors www.nestkc.com
