CONCUSSIONS: GAINING CLARITY ON THE INJURY YOU CANNOT SEE Following a head injury, it is often difficult to recognize the signs and symptoms of a concussion. They can’t be detected with a scan and are typically diagnosed through a clinical exam. They also can’t be resolved with medication or surgery. Concussions are an invisible injury that can have a devastating and lasting effect on one’s life. Yet it is the misconceptions surrounding concussions that hinder one getting timely and appropriate treatment.

What is a Concussion?

A concussion is a traumatic brain injury caused by rapid acceleration and deceleration of the tissue within the brain. It damages the brain on a cellular level, creating metabolic and chemical changes to the brain cells, making cellular function and communication more challenging.

How are Concussions Diagnosed?

A concussion is invisible, but it leaves clues.

Doctors can diagnose concussions by evaluating a patient for signs, symptoms, reviewing their medical history, and completing a neurocognitive examination, such as ImPACT. Often, there is a delay in diagnosing a concussion due to variances in knowledge about concussions.

These misconceptions can prolong recovery. With a mission to help demystify this elusive condition, concussion expert and physical therapist, Laura Ahmed, PT, DPT, shares seven of the most common misconceptions about concussions.

Seven Concussion Misconceptions

1. You have to lose consciousness to have a concussion. Only around 10 percent of the time does a concussion lead to a loss of consciousness.

Conversely, someone who loses consciousness following a head injury does not necessarily have a concussion.

2. A direct hit to the head is the only way concussions can occur. Impact on any part of the body can lead to a concussion if it causes the brain to move back and forth within the skull rapidly. It is essential to watch for the signs and symptoms of a concussion. Some of the most common symptoms

include headaches, nausea, vomiting, balance problems, dizziness, fatigue, trouble falling asleep, excessive sleeping, and sensitivity to light and noise.

3. Total rest is best. Sitting in a dark room until symptoms go away is a common misconception.

Cognitive and physical rest is essential during the first 48 hours following a concussion. However, it is important to gradually increase both cognitive and physical activity following the initial rest period. The appropriate way to increase activity varies by person.

4. Concussions only happen to athletes.

Concussions can affect people across the entire lifespan and can occur because of a variety of reasons.

5. Imaging is required to diagnose a concussion.

Often, imaging is recommended if the provider is concerned about something beyond a concussion.

Imaging, such as a CT scan, does not show a concussion, but rules out more severe injuries such as a brain bleed or injury to the spine or spinal cord. Imaging is not necessary in every case.

6. Concussion treatment must happen quickly to resolve symptoms. Quick treatment is always best for managing symptoms and shortening recovery time. However, there isn’t a specific time limit for when recovery can happen. People who have had an event years ago can benefit from therapy. Some people who have not adequately treated their concussion experience lingering symptoms. The right provider can identify and tie ongoing symptoms to a concussion from a person’s past.

7. Physical therapy can’t help concussions.

Mistakenly, many believe that concussions cannot be treated with anything but time and rest.

Physical therapy is an effective and evidencebased treatment for concussions. It can address symptoms with a multi-pronged approach that may include treatments for the visual-vestibular system, the spine, supervised progressive exercise and conditioning, and activity recommendations for play and work/school.

JUST SOUTHWEST OF BEND IN THE DESCHUTES RIVER WOODS, SOMETHING BIG AND BEAUTIFUL IS GROWING, LITERALLY. Drive down the dirt path to Zuni road and you’ll find father and son, Barry and Thaddeus Kilmer, outside diligently turning their longtime home’s yard into a large working garden nursery. Curious neighbors began stopping by all spring and summer to buy vegetable starts, boxes, and other garden equipment as new signs introduced the official Deschutes Co-Op. Thaddeus originally went to college for pre-med, but after learning that our physical and mental health is deeply connected to our guts and what we consume, he switched to studying horticulture at Oregon State University, and has since worked on many farms in seed and vegetable production. He started the dream of the Deschutes Co-Op in 2014 and began developing a plan with his father by emulating land management techniques from Hawaii, where Thaddeus was born and raised. “I didn’t subscribe to the ‘just put a Band-Aid on it’ approach to our health and searched for more permanent solutions,” says Thaddeus.” My dad and I had absolutely no experience growing foods, but we started experimenting by removing our grass and dabbled in raised beds and planted vegetables we liked to eat. Today, we have more than 3,000 veggie and plant varieties with a permaculture in the backyard.”

Growing a high-yielding garden in Central Oregon isn’t easy and planning is key. Gardeners in the high desert have to be careful of sneaker frost nights that can destroy baby starts, severe heat waves and dry soils that wilt budding plants, freak hailstorms that can decimate a successful garden in mere minutes, and unpredictable early and long winters. But if the pandemic of 2020 has taught us anything, it’s that knowing how to grow your own food gives one a sense of security if industrial food producers experience a shortage.

Starting a garden fills your time and fills the kitchen with nourishing foods. This year, the Deschutes Co-Op officially opened with one simple mission: Build community through the production of local food. The Kilmers are helping Central Oregon residents get started with gardening by getting them through the learning curve with inexpensive memberships that offer participants access to advice and assistance anytime, discounted veggie starts, and even market CONTINUED >

rentals and other purchases, such as boxes, electrical metal tubing (EMT) hoops, cover fabrics, protective nets, and more. In its first year fully operating, the Deschutes Co-Op has gained roughly 100 memberships with four levels for everyone from the novice to the more experienced gardener beginning with the Starter ($15/yr.), Gardener ($30/yr.), Supporter ($30/yr.), and the Producer ($60/yr.)— each offering unique benefits.

The Deschutes Co-Op has big plans ahead, including installing a large-scale refrigeration and food storage within their shop for both the co-op and its members’ extra produce. They envision the surplus to be sold within their market, as well as distributed to various communities in need. The Co-Op plans to offer more courses on cooking, canning, and hopes to eventually sell their homegrown seeds.

Additionally, the Co-Op is working to achieve non-profit status, which will help fundraise for other community projects focused on food production and education. There’s still time to stop by this fall to buy late season crops, and get to know Thaddeus and Barry, or become part of the “Ohana,” a Hawaiian term for family, as Barry says, by joining the Co-Op with a membership. In the realm of flooring, while trends may come and go, the popularity of wood products remains constant. “Hardwood flooring remains so popular because it offers decades of use and durability if properly maintained,” says Zach Bull, of Seaport Hardwoods and Flooring in Bend. Choosing a wood floor can be a daunting task, especially when faced with the vast array of woods, colors and finishes available today. Since starting Seaport Hardwoods and Flooring in 2004 as a distributor, founder Dan Bull along with his son Zach and their staff have decades of experience in the hardwood flooring industry and they are able to navigate the landscape of products seamlessly— from solid hardwoods to the newest engineered hardwood. For consumers, it’s best to start with an understanding of

INGREDIENTS: + 6 cups old fashioned rolled oats

+ 1 -12 oz. can evaporated milk

+ 1/4 tsp. ground ginger

+ 1 tsp. salt INSTRUCTIONS INSTRUCTIONS 1.) Heat oven to 350 degrees. Cover a baking sheet with parchment paper and add oats and ¼ cup melted butter. Bake five minutes, stir and bake another three-five minutes or until lightly toasted. Reduce oven temperature to 300 degrees.

2.) Transfer to a large bowl, add almonds and cranberries then set aside.

Start with several mini pumpkins. (We prefer to use fake ones so you don’t have to worry about leaving them out too long!)

You’ll also need some white paint, metallic paint and black paint. Twine is optional to add a slightly rustic vibe to the stems.

Paint all of the stems with black paint and wrap some with twine if desired. Then, create several different looks with combinations of metallic and flat paint. Make extra creepy “oozing” pumpkins by allowing paint to run down the sides.

Don’t feel limited to solid colors! Experiment here with different patterns and textures (like painting over lace or using a sponge to apply paint instead of a brush), and add some extra sparkle with glitter!

WHEN JOSIE JOHNSON WAS DIAGNOSED WITH A GLUTEN ALLERGY MANY YEARS AGO, ONE OF THE FOODS SHE MISSED THE MOST WERE PANCAKES. So, she started making her own mixes in her kitchen in Bend. Today, Josie’s Best Gluten Free Mixes are being sold throughout the country.

“When my husband and I were first dating, I really become obsessed with making a gluten-free pancake that we both could enjoy,” she says. (Marty, unlike Josie, doesn’t have a gluten allergy.) “So, I came up with one we really liked it and started giving it to family and friends. They loved them.” The company’s warehouse is based in Sisters. All products are made with minimal ingredients, and can be enjoyed by people with many different food allergies.

Line a square 8”x8” baking dish with parchment paper and preheat oven to 350°. Mix up pancake batter following instructions on the back of the bag.

Add the juice of ½ of lemon to batter. Toss frozen berries with 1-2 tsps. sugar and pour into baking dish. Pour batter on top. Sprinkle with remaining sugar. Bake for about one hour, or until a toothpick inserted into the middle comes out with only a few moist crumbs. Allow to cool slightly and enjoy!
