the men in our lives, and what they truly mean to us! Here at Austin Life Lifestyle, we are always inspired by what the men in our community do and create. We truly have some talented gentlemen in our midst, and we’ve taken this issue to highlight some of them and learn from their experiences in life. While you’re having all the feels, go ahead and start shopping for Father’s Day and pick out something he’ll love. We are so grateful for our men's inherent ability to protect and provide, and as a community, it's important to cultivate a healthy understanding and example of what this means and pass it along to our male youth. The unwavering confidence in a man during tough times is a crucial pillar of our families and local community, and we are forever blessed for it.

PA V I N G T H E R O A D TO RECOVERY 8

Austin Life | June 2020

WITH A LITTLE INGENUITY AND A WHOLE LOT OF PATIENCE, TRANSITIONS SOBER LIVING WAS SUCCESSFULLY OPENED IN 2018 BY OWNER, JAKE SIEBER, WHO BELIEVED, AT THE CORE OF HIS BEING, THAT IN ORDER TO TEACH REVERENCE, YOU MUST FIND THE SEEDS OF REVERENCE IN EACH PERSON AND HELP THEM GROW. Transitions Sober Living is located in the heart of Austin Texas where the recovery community has shown to be considerably prolific. There is no doubt that Austin is a beautiful city with an accepting, relaxed vibe, plenty of outdoor recreation, and a wealth of social, business, and educational opportunities which intrinsically fosters the rehabilitation of Transitions clients. At Transitions, clients are meant to feel safe, grounded, and accepted. It is intended for men who are facing substance abuse disorders to embark on a journey to wellness and wholeness. Their ultimate goal is for clients to maintain abstinence, embrace the fulfillment that comes with a life of recovery, and acquire the skills necessary to make effective, long-lasting changes in their lives. The young entrepreneur was born to two amazing parents in South Louisiana and has an older sister who he shares a close relationship with. He expressed that he wouldn’t be the man he is today without their love, support, and guidance throughout all of his trials and tribulations. Jake went on to graduate from the University

He remembers watching them fervently work each day to support their family, which consequently led him on a path of his own inherent and unwavering work ethic that he states he will forever be thankful for. Through his own personal experience, Jake fought to overcome his grueling battle with addiction himself during his early adult years, and just like so many others, he entered into the vicious cycle of going in and out of substance abuse rehabs with little to no hope; CONTINUED >

LOCAL LIMELIGHT (CONTINUED) however, he profoundly recalls his final stay at one of them in which he made a commitment to himself, proclaiming that he would not only get sober, but also establish his own sober living home for those struggling with substance abuse as well.

ABOUT TRANSITIONS

Transitions include 5 bedrooms that are well appointed and fur-

nished. The house has two living areas for gathering, with flat screen televisions and Wi-Fi throughout the house. They provide office and computer space for resident’s use, as well as, a meditation and reading lounge with a library of recovery literature. Their Staff works with rehab centers, outpatient treatment programs, psychiatrists, and therapists to enhance the success of sobriety. Complete abstinence is vital to recovery, and they conduct regular random substance screenings. Their curfew is also closely monitored. Transitions provides case management for substance abuse and dual diagnosis mental health disorders. Transitions believe sobriety is the beginning of a brave, fulfilling, and lifelong adventure. Their program works because they are a caring team dedicated to helping individuals reach their full potential –mind, body, and spirit.

COVID-19 diaries ARTICLE AND PHOTOGRAPHY LESSON MEDRANO

AUSTIN HAS ALWAYS BEEN DIFFERENT. It’s quirky and lively. I’ve seen it expand in every direction, welcome new faces and celebrate its roots in the form of food, art and music. The one thing I’ve never seen it do is stand still. It’s my job as a photographer to freeze moments in time, capture them, and then recreate their story the best way I can. Like many of my friends and peers, I have not been able to work during this strange time; instead of letting it discourage me, I have tried my best to find the beauty where I can. Although slightly eerie, I found the empty streets calming and almost therapeutic. Walking alone, camera in hand, face mask on, I felt like I was taking in the details of my city in a way I never had before. Normally I’d be photographing the crowds, shows, lights and general motion of the day, this time I shot the details, silence and spaces in-between. I was happy to see a few people out jogging, 14

O P E R AT I O N C R U S H C OV I D - 1 9 GARRISON BROTHERS DISTILLERY FUNDRAISER AIMS TO RAISE $2 MILLION TO AID TEAM RUBICON FIRST RESPONDERS AND SERVICE INDUSTRY FAMILIES GARRISON BROTHERS DISTILLERY, THE FIRST LEGAL WHISKEY DISTILLERY IN TEXAS, HAS LAUNCHED Operation Crush COVID19, A FUNDRAISING CAMPAIGN TO HELP AMERICAN COMMUNITIES RECOVER AND REBUILD. The campaign, launched in partnership with Good Bourbon for a Good Cause, the distillery’s 501(c)3 public charity, aims to raise more than $2 million dollars for veteran-led disaster response organization Team Rubicon, which is currently serving in communities across the country, leading efforts to combat the coronavirus pandemic. Good Bourbon for a Good Cause will also be naming a secondary beneficiary that is helping with the immediate needs of hospitality industry professionals and their families.

18

Austin Life | June 2020

“Good bourbon can change the world. We hope to inspire those who can to join us in our fundraising efforts to help communities and families rebuild and cope during this devastating pandemic,” said Dan Garrison, founder and proprietor of Garrison Brothers Distillery. “Our team is proud to be partnering again with Team Rubicon to help with relief efforts in all 50 states as well as fundraise to immediately help the hospitality industry.” Until recently, Garrison Brothers had planned to release Laguna Madre, a special project over 10 years in the making, later this summer through traditional liquor retail channels. But the retailers Garrison interviewed liked this idea better. Laguna Madre is the oldest bourbon Garrison Brothers has made to date — an eight-year-old, top-shelf release named after the beautiful blue waters along Texas’ Gulf Coast. The ultra-premium bourbon was aged in new white American oak barrels for four years and aged secondarily for four more years in Limousin oak from France, which is prized for its vanilla content. Limousin oak wood imparts spirits with distinct flavors of vanilla, sweet candy, cacao, and thick, white chocolate that an experienced bourbon drinker won’t ever forget. The original plan was to release just over 2,000 bottles to the distillery’s original supporters, then to close friends, then to bars and restaurants who have always championed the brand. But in light of COVID-19, Garrison and his team have pivoted. Laguna Madre will now be available only to donors who contribute $1,000 or more to Good Bourbon for a Good Cause in partnership with Team Rubicon, a global disaster response organization (composed primarily of military veterans and first responders) who are deploying teams to areas heavily affected by the COVID-19 crisis. For more information about Team Rubicon’s ongoing pandemic relief efforts, visit http://teamrubiconusa.org/neighbors/. “At Team Rubicon, we know we’re only as strong as our volunteers, partners and donors, as we fight this invisible war on COVID-19, we must all work together,” stated Jake Wood, co-founder and CEO of Team Rubicon. “During this unprecedented time, we are entirely grateful to have Garrison Brothers Distillery and its customers by our side, supporting our efforts in response to this deadly virus. This generous donation will help us continue to prepare, respond and aid community recovery

“When these bottles are gone, they’re gone forever. We’ll make more, but it may take years,” says Garrison. There will be 4,008 bottles of Boot Flask, 4,008 bottles of Honey Dew, and 2,004 bottles of Laguna Madre available. For more information and to make a donation, go to http://operationcrushcovid19.org ABOUT GARRISON BROTHERS DISTILLERY Garrison Brothers Distillery is a small farm and ranch located in the beautiful Texas Hill Country that authentically produces straight bourbon whiskey and only straight bourbon whiskey. Garrison Brothers introduced the first bourbon whiskey legally made in Texas in 2010 and has since developed a rabid fan base. They currently have a waitlist of more than 17,000 people hoping to land a spot on bottling days, and their Cowboy Bourbon™ normally sells out within hours of its release. Garrison Brothers is the first legal bourbon distillery in Texas history and is one of the first distilleries in America outside of Kentucky to produce authentic, handmade bourbon whiskey. The business was founded in 2006, though rumor has it they may have started production a little earlier. Every expression of Garrison Brothers bourbon is made from a sweet mash bill and barrel-aged in the intense Texas climate. The extreme heat creates multiple aging seasons in a year, resulting in a darker, richer, and fuller bourbon; bolder than almost any other bourbon on the market. At the San Francisco World Spirits Competition in 2020, the Garrison Brothers team was awarded a double gold medal for its Balmorhea Double-Barreled Bourbon, a silver medal for its Single Barrel Bourbon, and a bronze medal for its Small Batch Bourbon. Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible named Garrison Brothers Cowboy Bourbon™ “American Micro Whisky of the Year” in 2014 and again in 2017. The Whisky Bible also awarded the same distinction to Balmorhea Double-Barreled Bourbon in 2019 and 2020. Garrison Brothers was voted Best Craft Whiskey Distillery in America by readers of USA Today in 2017. Garrison Brothers is a proud and active member of the communities of Blanco, Fredericksburg, Hye, Johnson City, and Stonewall. The distillery and its barrel barns are open to the public for tours in Hye, Texas. Anyone interested in learning more about Garrison Brothers Bourbon or in taking a tour of the distillery should visit garrisonbros.com or follow @garrisonbros on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. CAN YOU EXPLAIN MORE ON THIS STATEMENT: MEN DON’T UNDERSTAND THEIR PLACE IN SOCIETY, AND THEY BELIEVE THEIR LIFE’S PURPOSE IS TO GET PAID BY WORKING FOR ONE PERSON. Men’s place has always been to build, provide, and protect. Advancements in technology have only very recently opened this up to women being able to do generally the same thing making it so men are not required to do those things anymore. WHAT IS JACKS MOUNTAIN? Jacks Mountain Self-Care Co. is a community that supports self-care through herbal goods—herbal teas, infused body oil blends, salves, bath soaks, and herbal extracts—individual consultations, and an open mind and heart to see how we can create space for others to find belonging and trust in themselves and their lived experiences. Our name is a nod to Elizabeth’s, another Jacks Mountain owner, rural roots and a reminder to prioritize community, collective knowledge, and the earth. WHAT SETS YOU APART FROM OTHER HOLISTIC TYPES OF PRODUCTS? We were born from a desire to support Alan, another Jacks Mountain owner, during his transition from Active Duty and have circled around the need for military veterans to find their center again—whatever “center” looks like for each person—after the military no longer provides it. We hold space to be heard and feel seen by tailoring herbal goods to better fit each individual. Our consultations acknowledge herbalism, mental health, and faith, to the extent that every person finds each important.
