“We partnered with MUST Ministries and opened the first Green Acres food pantry,” she said. “We call it ‘A Client Choice,’ where families can come in and shop. We have about 40 families that get regular monthly groceries. Community volunteers run the pantry on the distribution days.”

Ashley didn’t stop there.

“Next, we started a backpack program, which we call ‘The Gator Pack’, since we’re the Gators. On Fridays we send home 200 Gator Packs full of snacks, granola bars, microwavable ravioli, applesauce, cereal and anything else that we can stuff in there to sustain them for the weekend.”

On Monday mornings, students bring in their empty backpacks, which are numbered, and on Thursdays, community volunteers refill them.

“It’s a big undertaking, but it’s definitely worth it, because I’ll tell you, the little smiles on their faces when they come to pick up their backpacks every Friday makes us so happy,” said Ashley.

One of the biggest challenges, said Ashley, is figuring out where to get the snacks. She said she’s been lucky so far and continually says prayers to keep the snacks coming.

In the summertime, they continue to run the food pantry for their regular families and anyone else who needs it. Last summer, Ashley was able to keep the school library open and when kids came in, she would ask if they needed any food. If they did, she would let them fill up a bag.

“The first and most important change I have noticed is the comfort and confidence levels of our students” she said. “They come to school dressed properly, they come to school not hungry; they’re happy and joyful and want to learn.”

Secondly, she proudly stated that Green Acres had the highest CCRPI (College and Career Ready Performance Index) growth in the district this year. She believes this result is directly tied to the students being provided for and from her staff working hard to improve their instructional practices.

Besides local churches and businesses, one of her most generous partners in education is Tina Abercrombie, the owner of C&S Paving.

She provides much needed funds and resources.

As part of Wellstar’s overarching Community Health Strategy, and in response to critical community health gaps revealed by Wellstar’s annual Community Health Needs Assessment (food insecurity, opioids and behavioral health, women’s health, cancer, suicide, and access to primary care), the health system is launching the Wellstar Center for Health Equity. The purpose of the Wellstar Center for Health Equity is to accelerate the health system’s strategic efforts to address priority health needs throughout Georgia.

Wellstar convened a group of system-wide experts and community partners to provide services, equipment, prevention and wellness programs such as free mammograms, school health programs, hospital chapels, healing gardens, and more. For example, Wellstar partnered with local organizations to provide first books to every baby born in 2020 at Wellstar Kennestone and Wellstar Douglas Hospitals.

TIPS FOR PREVENTING THE SPREAD

OF COVID-19

By Dr. Earl Stewart of WellStar Medical Group at Vinings Jubilee The advent of the novel coronavirus has changed our lives in so many ways. As those of us in primary care are working with local, state, and federal departments of public health, our local hospitals, government offices, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention right here at home in Atlanta and its suburbs, here are a few tips to continue to keep us all happy and healthy as we work together to decrease the spread of the virus:

SOCIAL DISTANCING IS CRUCIAL.

We all know the six-feet distancing rule. Please follow the policies of your state and local municipalities regarding any stay-at-home orders and city-wide curfews. I know this is limiting somewhat to our daily lives, but we have to do what we can in this respect to prevent the spread of the virus. Use virtual and teleconferencing platforms for gathering and communicating as much as possible. By all means, please do not visit someone who is known or suspected to have COVID-19 disease, and if you have symptoms to do not gather in groups or visit nursing homes or hospitals. The best thing you can do at that time is stay home in self-quarantine for at least fourteen days and alert your doctor of any initial symptoms or any change in symptoms.

HANDWASHING FREQUENTLY IS CRUCIAL.

CDC recommends handwashing for at least twenty seconds at a time. I often tell patients to make sure they get between their fingers, just above their wrists, and under their fingernails when washing. The friction even more so that the temperature of the water helps to dislodge microbes from your hands and fingers.

REASONS TO BE TESTED include if you have one or any of the following: • exposure directly to someone who is known to have tested positive for COVID-19 by direct nasopharyngeal swab • fever of 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit or higher plus any upper respiratory symptoms of sore throat, cough, sputum production, muscle aches • travel to a current or previous epicenter of viral transmission within the last two to four weeks prior to onset of any symptoms.

We are hoping to have a vaccination to offer soon. We are learning more each day, and as health care professionals, do our best to remain up-to-date to give our patients the latest and greatest information based on evidence.

Our daily lives changed overnight and events like going to the park, meeting a co-worker for happy hour, heading out to dinner with the family and shopping for summer orangetheory fitness

And many restaurants in the area collaborated on an “ATL Food Bingo” card that was promoted to customers through social media @ATLFoodBingo.
