NORTHLAND MAN FIGHTS PARKINSON'S WITH ROCK STEADY After being diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2016, Dick McPike took action, fighting for his continued independence and strength.

His secret weapon? Over the past two years, Dick has participated in the Rock Steady Boxing program at North Kansas City Hospital.

While newly diagnosed individuals may be apprehensive to try something like this, Dick encourages them to take the leap.

“It’s more than an exercise program; it’s a chance to have fun,” Dick said. “The instructors keep the mood light and always find new ways to keep us engaged.”

Class is also an opportunity to connect with people who understand the challenges that are unique to this disease.

Each month, a group from the class meets for breakfast. And when they can’t meet in person, they stay in touch through phone or email.

NORTH KANSAS CITY PUBLIC LIBRARY INTRODUCES CURBSIDE SERVICE North Kansas City Public Library is pleased to announce the initial phase of a return to normal operations. The Library is now offering curbside pick-up of hold items. Patrons may place Library holds online, or call the Library to place holds.

Once items are available, patrons may call to schedule a pickup time in the Library’s designated parking lot pickup area. To maintain social distance, this transfer process will be entirely touchless. Currently, the Library plans to offer curbside service Monday-Thursday (10 am-2 pm and 4-8 pm), Friday (10 am-5 pm), and Saturday (10 am-4 pm). These curbside pickup times may be adjusted if needed.

Throughout this time, NKCPL will be taking a number of precautions to create the safest environment possible for Library staff and users. Library staff will be issued PPE and the Library will install protective acrylic screens at circulation desks. In addition, Library surfaces will be sanitized frequently, and Library items will be quarantined for three days prior to check-in and re-shelving.

With that in mind, the Artisan Home Tour will not be taking place during its previously scheduled dates of June 5-7, 12-14, and 19-21. Instead, it is being rescheduled for August.

The Artisan Home Tour is a ticketed event benefiting JDRF. The homes will be scattered throughout the Kansas City metropolitan area and tickets will be available online at ArtisanHomeTourKC.org. To tour all eight homes, the first ticket costs $25 and each additional ticket costs $15. Or, consumers can tour one home for $10.

PARK UNIVERSITY TO OFFER CREDIT FOR CITIZENSHIP AND COMMUNITY SERVICE Park University, which has served those who serve their community and country since its founding in 1875, has announced that it will provide up to nine hours of college credit for students who have demonstrated they have been civically engaged citizens. Beginning in the Fall 2020 semester, the University’s Civic Engagement Portfolio program will allow students the opportunity to earn three credit hours for every 120 hours of community service, up to a maximum of nine credit hours for 360 hours of community service and increased leadership responsibilities. With the addition of two core courses, Introduction to Leadership and Leadership for Civic Engagement, and three to nine credit hours of electives, a student could earn a minor in citizenship and service from Park in just 18 credit hours. WHEN THE LEGACY OF MAYOR QUINTON LUCAS IS CHRONICLED, HOW HE AND HIS TEAM LED A HALF MILLION RESIDENTS THROUGH THEIR FIRST WORLDWIDE PANDEMIC WILL GO DOWN IN HISTORY. Whether Mayor Lucas is urging constituents to show up or shut down, he is always ready to lead, ready to listen and ready to remedy. As KC’s 55th mayor, Mayor Lucas has only been in office since August 1, but the city feels his presence in a way we didn’t anticipate.

His tenure has endured the force of unforeseen events that go way beyond filling potholes and offering free bus fare.

“Everybody who runs for office has this 100-day plan, and you realize how quickly that won’t be occurring,” Mayor Lucas says with a laugh. “From Day 1, this year has been historic. From our city’s first Super Bowl in half a century to a global pandemic the likes of which hasn’t been seen in a full century, these are the kinds of events you could never anticipate.”

What has been even more remarkable to Mayor Lucas is how great Kansas Citians have reacted throughout it. “Whether they’re showing up for a parade when it’s 27 degrees outside, or it’s a global pandemic, and we all have to stay inside for weeks; frankly, I’ve been touched by how Kansas City has responded.”

It’s not because we’re the best rule-followers either, he adds. It’s because of the core goodness that makes us team players.

“It’s who we are as people and who we are in our human nature,” Mayor Lucas says. “Kansas City received the message that even if you’re a healthy person, even if you’re someone who thinks they can bounce back, the worry is for so many others in our community, like the immune-compromised, the elderly and the vulnerable. It’s amazing to see how quickly our people adapted to changing the way we lived.”

Mayor Lucas is no stranger to adapting. His well-documented background prepared him for this moment. Often homeless in east Kansas City with his single mother and sisters, he learned to negotiate the extremes in his life. Those skills would empower him years later to represent all segments of the city he leads.

“In my life story, I talk about the diverse set of experiences and influences I had. I still remember when I was in 6th or 7th grade, and we were homeless. I was living in a one-room motel with my sisters and my mother in east Kansas City. I was a homeless kid who was going to The Barstow School on scholarship. That taught me a heck of a lot about adversity and how to adapt. You realize what your goal is each day. You certainly recognize it’s not easy, but you know that no matter the challenge, you’ll get through it. That was a big part of my ability to handle any number of life’s challenges. And this pandemic has been a significant one, too.”

Nicknamed “the little professor” as a child, Mayor Lucas would grow up to become one.

After earning degrees from Washington University and Cornell Law School, he joined the University of Kansas faculty at age 28, making him one of the youngest tenure-track law professors in the country. His work on the city council and volunteerism in prisons and schools continues to drive his decisions today. His intelligence, positive energy, competence and likeability all contributed to Lucas besting 10 opponents last year to succeed Sly James as KC’s new mayor.

city hall or from his apartment in the historic jazz district of 18th and Vine, Mayor Lucas has scaled high but reaches deep. His heart aches for the East side and the urban core where he wants to effect real and lasting changes in education, housing, infrastructure, crime prevention and other initiatives. From his windows, he often watches his beloved KC sunsets descend over storms. They’re images of hope that tomorrow will hold brighter days for districts slammed by vicious statistics, especially his hometown 3rd District where the virus has hit unusually hard.

In the past several weeks, Mayor Lucas says he has probably spent more time with area leaders than in all his past years on city council.

“The collaboration across jurisdictions from Lee’s Summit, Johnson County, Wyandotte County, and others has made me incredibly proud and excited for what that means, not only for fighting this issue now, but for what we can accomplish in the future.”

Mayor Lucas says that what really sets KC apart is how giving we are. Whether through structured philanthropy or just one-to-one generosity, such as delivering food to elderly neighbors, our people are willing to help each other out.

Mayor Lucas adds that he has no doubts KC will do all it can to help its neighbors and small businesses during the next phases of economic recovery.

“I know KC will do it,” he says, “because we are a resilient city. During the influenza outbreak of 1918, Kansas City was a big city then, and we got through that, and we will

get through this one, too. So my message to all Kansas Citians is keep up that spirit.”

GIVING BACK

GLEANING THE GOOD IT’S EARLY MORNING WHEN SANDY VIVIAN GETS THE CALL. “Have a couple of rows of arugula that I won’t be able to harvest. Do you want them?” the farmer asks.

Of course, she would answer. And with that affirmation, the staff of After the Harvest would spring into action, finding volunteers from their Vegetable Emergency Gleaning Squad to drive to the farm, harvest the arugula, and deliver it to an organization that can use it.

Gleaning is a concept foreign to most people but it’s After the Harvest’s raison d’ê·tre. Instead of growing fresh produce themselves, they rescue perfectly good food from rotting in the fields or finding its home in the landfill after not selling at the farmer’s market. With 10 million tons of produce discarded or left unharvested on a yearly basis and food insecurity growing, the need for gleaning is obvious.

After the Harvest finds produce from a number of sources.

Communications Director Sandy Vivian says that they have developed relationships with farmers around the Kansas City metro area (currently 202 farmers), offering to come harvest what they can’t use or pick up what doesn’t sell after market days. Some farmers grow a row or two extra just for them. They also work with food distributors such as C&C Produce to source their excess produce or items that aren’t perfect enough for the grocery stores. Without the organization, the produce would go to waste. With them, they are able to redistribute the food to the people that need it.

So where does that produce go? After the Harvest works with 367 different agencies but their main recipient is Harvesters, the Community Food Network. In fact, they are Harvesters’ largest produce donor, helping to flesh out shelf-stable foods that come from wholesale purchases and donations.

In addition to their gleaning from individual farmers, After the Harvest also fundraises to fill out the remainder of their produce supply line--truckloads of imperfect produce.

“When you go to the grocery store and you see all the zucchini that are the same size, it’s not because they grow that way,” laughs Vivian. While grocery stores only select the most aesthetically 20

No matter what the health situation, fresh produce is an essential way to e n s u r e h e a l t h y b o d i e s .” pleasing fruits and vegetables, there are tons of ‘seconds’ that are perfectly edible that will never see a supermarket shelf because they are considered imperfect. With donations raised, they purchase truckloads of these seconds to donate to Harvesters.

While After the Harvest is dedicated to feeding the stomachs of the hungry, they are also interested in feeding the souls of their volunteers. With more than 1000 volunteer gleaners each year, Vivian says that there are a variety of reasons that bring them volunteers, from corporate team building activities to getting back to the land for familes.

“A lot of folks talk about bringing their kids and having a full experience--they get to bring their kids out and see where their food comes from, sample a little, harvest, and then they get to see where their food goes. It’s a full-circle experience,” says Vivian.

As unemployment rates rise, Vivian wonders how much the demand on food banks will rise. For many, food insecurity was a vague concept that is rapidly becoming a reality.

After the Harvest hopes to alleviate whatever needs arise.

In a post-COVID-19 world, Vivian says that more access to fresh produce, not less, is essential.

“Everybody deserves to have fruits and vegetables.

My passion for the past 23 years has been cooking and traveling. I started cooking in college when that was the only job in the town at the time. I started

washing dishes and then moved to the pantry line.

From there, I just realized that I enjoyed it then kept finding more jobs at better places. I moved to So Cal in 1999 and worked through restaurants, hotels, from

Since then, my wife and I were privileged to travel to Italy, Germany, France, Spain, Thailand, Singapore, Bali, Taiwan, and Costa Rica. Traveling and meeting these people, tasting the food, and immersing ourselves in the culture has become our passion. When I started cooking I always strove to work at the best places. After traveling, I have learned that cooking food that helps to bring people together and celebrate family is what I enjoy the most.

Throughout his tenure at Winnetonka, Nicholas maintained excellent grades and will graduate with a 3.8 GPA. He was also the 2019 Homecoming King. Nicholas was enrolled in the NKC School district’s Grow Your Own Program.
