We've Got Style! I'M NO FASHIONISTA. Any sense of style in my wardrobe is courtesy of my chic wife. So the idea of publishing what will become an annual “style” issue of Canton Lifestyle was amusing to her and quite frankly, intimidating to me. Fortunately, Canton is not short on talented individuals who specialize in style, fashion and the art of impeccable taste. We could not include them all in this issue, but

They used their passion for fashion to open the highly successful District Boutique women’s clothing shop in Green. THE DISTRICT BOUTIQUE OFFERS FUN, ON-TREND FASHION EXPERIENCES TO LOYAL AND LONG-DISTANCE CUSTOMERS AFTER YEARS OF DIGITAL MARKETING EXPERIENCE, CANTON CENTRAL CATHOLIC GRADUATE JENNIFER GEH REALIZED SHE HAD ANOTHER DREAM FOR HER LIFE. In November 2014, Geh and long-time friend, Marcie Horbus, partnered to open The District Boutique in Green. Though the duo had no experience in the fashion industry, they both had a passion for style and an abundance of determination. “We recognized there was a need for a store like ours in the area,” says Horbus. “The timing was right to quit our jobs and follow our passion, and we were determined to become successful entrepreneurs.” After more than five years with a store-front, that determination came in handy. Like many small businesses around the country, the boutique was forced to close its doors during the COVID-19 pandemic. 12
Canton Lifestyle | September 2020
Despite closing, and cancelled flights for merchandise-buying trips, they still saw opportunity and did not leave their loyal customers waiting. Instead, they launched an online store, allowing shoppers to purchase denim, dresses, accessories, and other hand-selected items that are signatures of The District. After almost three months of shutdown, the boutique reopened with special hours for immunocompromised customers to shop safely, and established other health-related precautions in store. It even created a new customer loyalty program to ensure their customers knew how much they were appreciated. But Geh and Horbus already had a habit of showing appreciation to customers. In fact, they include handwritten notes that go out with each online order. It’s just one of the boutique’s many efforts to personalize the customer experience. The personal styling service helps women choose outfits that suit them, much like Geh says she did for friends growing up. Now she has a broad selection of merchandise to choose from, as the partners’ different tastes complement each other to stock the racks. “Marcie tends to be drawn to denim and more casual styles,” says Geh. “I tend to lean towards feminine dressy styles.” The boutique staff say their main goal is to create a fun and personalized shopping experience for all of their amazing customers. This tailored experience even extends to private shopping parties that have become quite popular for girls’ night out groups, bachelorette parties, corporate events, and more. “Private shopping party attendees enjoy one-on-one attention from Marcie and me in a more personal setting,” says Geh. Inside the store, the owners fused more of their own personal styles to create a rustic and feminine atmosphere complete with wood beams, industrial pipe accents, pink walls, and massive chandeliers. Geh and Horbus say their store resonates with women 25-60 who are looking for everyday outfits as well as night-out styles that are affordable and stylish. They even receive new arrivals daily, so the racks are constantly changing. And luckily for this duo, their customer base is not only large – it’s loyal. Customers come from surrounding areas, but many are as far away as California. As they approach six years at their Massillon Road store-front in Green (Heritage Crossings Plaza next to Pav’s Creamery), the two say they have considered opening a second location. but they haven’t found the right spot yet. The District’s unique finds and ultra-personal service keep customers coming back. And it seems that Jennifer Geh and Marcie Horbus aren’t planning on slowing down anytime soon. Shop online at lovethedistrict.com and choose from in-store or curbside pickup, or $5 shipping for orders under $100. Follow The District Boutique on Instagram and Facebook for new arrivals daily.

VITAMIN A IS ESSENTIAL TO PROTECTING THE CORNEAS OF OUR EYES. By taking care of your corneas, you can extend the health of your eyesight and reduce vision loss with age. An easy way to remember what to eat for healthy eyes is to look for orange foods. Carrots, sweet potatoes, pumpkin, and butternut squash are all high in vitamin A.

Did you know that vitamin A is also imperative for skin health? So while you’re caring for your corneas, you’re also boosting your outer glow. If you want to kick it up a notch, be intentional about eating plenty of foods with omega-3 fatty acids to reduce acne and inflammation and help your skin produce its own collagen. For your healthy fats, go for flax seed, walnuts, chia seeds, and fish.

For soft, flowing tresses, make sure you’re getting an equal amount of B vitamins in your diet. We naturally get plenty of B-6 because it’s in most grains, but it’s easier to end up with a biotin or B-12 deficiency if you don’t pay attention. Focus on foods like salmon, eggs, spinach, and broccoli for a healthy balance of B vitamins for your hair.

I N T E N T I O N A L LY UNIQUE SELENE STONE TRANSFORMS THE RITUAL OF GIFTING TO OTHERS—AND YOURSELF LIZ BRADLEY WANTS YOU TO LIVE WELL. While working in the fast-paced lifestyle of New York’s fashion scene, she had an interaction with a Reiki energy practitioner, which she says led her to an a-ha! moment. “I felt a shift in my own energy,” recalls Bradley. “All of these different experiences I’ve had came full circle for me. From then on, I decided—I’m going to explore this holistic path of wellness.” Bradley’s path took the form of mindful living, intention setting, and a growing love for crystal healing. She knew she wanted to share her grounded and centered lifestyle with others, so while ringing in the 2018 New Year under a bright supermoon, she set the intention to bring Selene Stone to life. The initial plan was to open an online store offering unique goods for a mindful lifestyle. 30
Canton Lifestyle | September 2020
ARTICLE EMILY DRAHER PHOTOGRAPHY TERRY FRAVEL But when she moved back to Stark County from NYC, the opportunity to open a brick-and-mortar boutique manifested itself. By fall 2018, she opened Selene Stone in the Downtown Canton Arts District. Shortly after, she made the move to her current Jackson Township storefront. The store is bright and airy, with natural crystals displayed in gorgeous color-coded groupings. Shelves around the perimeter of the store display books, skincare, bath and body products, jewelry, candles, oracle decks, and energy-clearing room sprays. As soon as you enter, you can feel the healing energy in the space—and Bradley’s warm, inclusive nature. While Bradley admits that she didn’t always feel completely comfortable in other spiritual shops or communities, she used those experiences to create a space that is welcoming and inclusive to all. Her goal is to bring awareness to a variety of mindfulness practices that can encourage wellness, and by doing so, hopefully nurture, inspire, and support those in her community. Selene Stone offers a myriad of intentionally chosen products and gifts. Best sellers include herbal skincare made in Ohio; candles that are hand-poured on the full moon each month so they’re infused with powerful manifestation energy; crystal-infused energy-clearing sprays; and handcrafted jewelry. However, the natural crystals steal the show when you walk in. Customers agree: small tumbled stones and decorative pieces are Selene Stone’s most popular items. Crystal healing is an ancient form of holistic wellness that recently resurfaced in popular culture. History tells of warriors wearing hematite for protection and royal leaders wearing lapis lazuli for wisdom. Each crystal offers its own unique vibration, lending it to a specific set of metaphysical uses. Today, crystals can be used in meditation or a spiritual practice, as home decor, in self-care products, and in jewelry. “You unlock a crystal's power by thinking of a goal or mindfully setting your intentions," Bradley explains. "Crystals work their magic by infusing your daily thoughts with these goals, intentions, and positive energy. Regardless of their energetic vibrations, crystals can be powerful talismans by serving as tangible reminders of your goals, feelings, and wishes.” For anyone new to crystal healing, Bradley suggests starting by carrying a small tumbled stone in your pocket or purse. Small display pieces can be beneficial to sit on your desk or nightstand. Juicy, purple amethyst is the perfect starter crystal—for yourself or as a gift. Amethyst is a great stone to use if your intentions involve mental or emotional awareness, stress relief, or more restful sleep. Amethyst has a transmuting energy, helping to purify negative or low vibrational energies into more peaceful, positive vibrations. It is available in its beautiful raw form as a cluster of purple crystals or in a variety of cut, polished, and tumbled pieces. Perhaps you could take inspiration from the name of the store itself. The name Selene Stone incorporates two of Bradley’s favorite crystals: selenite and moonstone. Moonstone is a flashy crystal that represents transition, new beginnings, and growth, much like our constantly changing moon. Selenite is a beautiful white crystal named after Selene, the Greek Titan goddess of the moon. This soothing mineral purifies and cleanses negative energy out of a space or other crystals and aids with mental clarity and intuition. For those looking for unique, mindfully made gifts that
