August is our Kids & Pets month, so in sticking with that theme, please take a look at some of the great editorial features we have. While I do not have any children of my own, I have had a whole lot of fun with my nieces and nephews over the years. I know that for most pet owners, pets become part of the family. They can pick up your mood, change your day and give you exercise while walking. It doesn't matter what kind, pets mean so much, and we get used to being greeted when coming home from work. I do not currently have any pets but had a beloved German Shorthair Pointer named Chester for almost 16 years. In the end, it is about sharing your time with family and doing what brings us joy. For some that is children, for some that is pets and for most it's about both. Let's all get outside and enjoy our families with what is left of this summer and the month of August. With our community rebounding from the Covid-19 impact, let's be sure to please support our local businesses. I have always believed in trying to buy local, and we need to now, more than ever, support our local restaurants and businesses.

“From the exterior to the interior, the design of this home is very cohesive,” Mooney said. “Architect Brian Neeper did a great job with scaling and massing the home’s three stories, which can often be a challenge on a smaller urban lot, and interior designer Jane Spencer and I collaborated on many of the finishes.” After Mooney graduated from Michigan State University in 2002, he received invaluable training and experience working with his now mentor and friend, John Hummel, at one of the premier custom home building companies in the Hamptons (New York). Mooney is fully committed to developing and preserving lasting relationships with his clients, having a proven track record of client satisfaction, devotion to quality and great design. PRM was founded in 2009 during a recession with one custom home build in Birmingham. Under the direction and supervision of Mooney over the last 11 years, PRM’s growth can be directly attributed to consistent build quality, unique custom touches and lasting relationships with clients who happily refer Mooney and his team. PRM has won multiple Detroit Home Design Awards, including first place in the 2020 competition for architecture/ design of residence 381 Pleasant Street in Birmingham. NO-CHURN HOMEMADE
ICE CREAM
WHEN THE SUMMER DAYS ARE HOT, A COOL TREAT ALWAYS HITS THE SPOT. Our family loves to pick up in-season berries at the farmers market– because there’s just nothing like a fresh berry salad served over ice cream! The beauty in these recipes is that they are so simple; even the littlest of your little helpers can get in on the mixing. The freezer time can be an agonizing wait for kids, but the reward pays off with a delicious treat that they will be amazed they made themselves.
INGREDIENTS + 2 cups heavy whipping cream + 1 cup vanilla pudding + 1 cup vanilla yogurt
DIRECTIONS Whip the cream until stiff peaks form. Fold in pudding and yogurt. Freeze a minimum of four hours before serving. Hint: You can make the pudding from a box mix or keep it really simple and use the snacksized, pre-made cups. Three snack cups equal one cup pudding!

SUMMER’S BEST
BERRY SALAD
What I love about this salad is that the vinegar really gives an unexpected flavor twist that pairs surprisingly well with the berries. The yogurt in the ice cream adds a nice, complementary tang that makes this taste quite adult and sophisticated but is still a big hit with any ice cream and berry-loving child. Take it up another notch by serving alongside angel food cake or drizzling with a nice balsamic reduction!
INGREDIENTS + 18 ounces strawberries + 6 ounces raspberries + 6 ounces blackberries + 12 ounces blueberries + 2 tablespoons white balsamic vinegar + 1 teaspoon honey + 1/8 teaspoon cinnamon
DIRECTIONS Rinse all berries and allow to drain while hulling and halving the strawberries. In a small bowl, whisk together the balsamic vinegar, honey and cinnamon. Combine berries in a large bowl, pour vinegar mixture over top and gently toss. Best served immediately but will keep in the fridge. Hint: This is a great recipe to use those fun flavored vinegars that may be hiding in the back of your cupboard. Swap out the white balsamic for any fruity, light-colored vinegar you have on hand. For more kid-friendly, as well as adult recipes, search Jessica’s Kitchen on Facebook (facebook.com/Jessicaskitchen) or follow her on Instagram @jessicaskitchen.mi.

Bowers welcomes every learner to discover and wonder in the world around them; nevertheless, if the Bloomfield Hills School District’s 200 million dollar bond passes on August 4, Bowers will have the opportunity to reach even more in its educational programming since, right now, it’s not completely accessible. For example, those with different abilities currently have difficulty accessing the horse barn, the goat barn and the garden. The bond would provide resources for accessible walkways and pathways, as well as structures that people with wheelchairs can get into. Located at 1219 East Square Lake Road, Bowers School Farm is a proud partner of Friends of Bowers Farm, Preservation Bloomfield, Bloomfield Historical Society and the Master Gardener Society of Oakland County. FUN PAPER CRAFT PROJECTS FOR YOU + YOUR KIDDO ARTICLE NICOLETTE MARTIN
M AT E R I A L S + Cardboard + White crepe paper + Construction paper + Glue + Scissors + Beads, yarn, pom poms, etc.
DIRECTIONS 1. Take your cardboard and cut two pieces into the shape of a llama (we found a stencil online). Then, cut strips of cardboard the depth you want your llama to be. You’ll connect these to either side of the llama cutouts to enclose your piñata. 2. Glue your strip of cardboard all along the edge of one side of your llama, then glue to the other side. (Be sure to leave a hole you can close up later so you can fill it with your favorite candy!)
PIÑLLAMA
3. Starting at the neck, cover the front, back and sides of your llama with white crepe paper, cutting a slit every half inch or so to create the traditional piñata look. 4. Cover all remaining sides the neck and head with white construction paper, cut to fit your design. 5. Using construction paper, beads, pom poms, tassels, buttons, etc., add some flair to the rest of your llama! Bonus points for incorporating different shapes and textures into your final product.

Fold the circles in half and glue them all together back-to-back to create a sphere that looks like an accordion. 3. Glue the beak and white stripe to the neck, then glue the neck to a flat side of your inner-most circle. 4. Add the legs, a black dot for an eye and pink feathers for the ultimate flamin-goal.

with students and giving them the academic and social support that they needed during this stressful time. Thus, we instilled an online tutoring platform that has now extended nationwide, allowing us to reach even more students. VIVIAN, HOW IS THE ONLINE TUTORING PLATFORM WORKING OUT? It has absolutely exceeded our expectations. So far, we have been able to make our virtual services and initiatives available to students in Michigan, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Maryland, New York and California with the help of our amazing partners at the Detroit Pistons, Bloomfield Hills Board of Education and MI COVID Sitters. We have been able to provide helpful oneon-one mentorship to students who have been struggling with their schoolwork due to challenges associated with remote learning like the lack of instruction and inability to receive individual aid. ADRIANNA, WHAT TYPES OF CLASSES ARE BEING OFFERED ONLINE? Reading Seminars (various age groups), Standardized Test Preparation and Online Business Building Seminars. Anyone can sign up for these classes. It is difficult during this time to collaborate with others based on one’s interests; thus, these courses based on different passions (such as our Sustainable Living Seminar) allow students to have a community where they explore an interest that they already have or to find a new interest through different discussions.
