Just as we featured some amazing Movers+Shakers in our May Women’s Issue, June is our fair turn for the Gents, who are inspiring us with their work in the community. And if the warmer months means you’ll be hitting the streams, you’ll be in good company with Mark Lewicki, sales and marketing director for The Country Club at Castle Pines, who shares his passion for fly fishing in The Stream Less Traveled.

Watering Hole Secrets
MARK LEWICKI’S FAVORITE FISHING EXPERIENCES The Broadmoor’s Fly Fishing Camp on the Tarryall River. Working in luxury hospitality for 16 years, I know the best when I experience it. It is world-class, private trout fishing with rustic, luxury lodging within 90 minutes of Denver. I took two groups of my members in 2019.
The Madison and Gallatin River Fishing Trip with my Dad. It’s truly Big Sky Country. It’s remote and unbelievably beautiful, but easily accessible with some of the best, Blue Ribbon dry fly trout fishing I’ve ever experienced.
Big Hunting Creek outside Thurmont, MD. It’s a small, fly-fishing-only freestone stream near Camp David and Cunningham Falls where I taught myself to fly fish. It’s also where many presidents have dropped a line.

THESE SOUTH DENVER LEADERS SHARE THEIR DRIVE TO SUCCEED AT WORK AND AT HOME
Dr. Brent Bailey is the owner of Colorado Precision Dentistry and Orthodontics. He has been living in and practicing dentistry in Highlands Ranch since 1984. After graduating from the University of Michigan in May 1984, Dr. Brent married his wife Sue and moved to Colorado with a thousand dollars, a U-Haul, and a dream of creating a successful practice. WHAT’S A TYPICAL DAY LIKE FOR YOU AT WORK? A day of work at Colorado Precision Dentistry and Orthodontics includes arriving an hour before the first patients are scheduled in order to meet with my staff to review each patient’s needs so our team is ready to provide optimal care for each patient. Each day includes everything from routine cleanings and exams to implants, crowns, and orthodontic care. Many on my staff have been with me for decades. In fact, one employee is celebrating her 30th year with me. HOW DID YOU ENTER DENTISTRY? I considered a career in medicine and dentistry when I entered college but my father was a dentist, so I chose that path. I felt dentistry offered a better lifestyle and great long-term relationships with patients. IF YOU HAD TO CHOOSE A DIFFERENT CAREER PATH, WHAT WOULD IT BE? I would have chosen something in the medical profession if not dentistry, but my son Joshua did follow the medical path and is a practicing physician in Longmont. WHAT DO YOU DO TO MAINTAIN A BALANCED LIFE? HOW DO YOU DISCONNECT FROM WORK?: I am an avid outdoorsman and often head to the mountains after a week of serving others to regroup and enjoy skiing, mountain biking, hiking, and wildlife photography. WHAT’S SOMETHING YOU LEARNED RECENTLY THAT SURPRISED YOU: I feel like I learn something every day but, I learned that, in order to see better in the subdued light of winter, a reindeer’s eyes go from gold color in the summer to blue in the winter. That’s pretty cool. 18

VECTRA BANK
Kirk Monroe
LONE TREE Kirk Monroe of Lone Tree is the executive vice president and executive director of banking services of Vectra Bank. WHAT’S A TYPICAL DAY LIKE FOR YOU AT VECTRA BANK? A typical day at Vectra Bank primarily includes collaborating with co-workers on the best ways to create solutions for employees and customers. I also spend time reviewing loan, deposit, Treasury Management and other bank-product requests; strategizing Vectra’s Corporate Social Responsibility intent and culture; mentoring staff and connecting with existing and prospective clients of the bank. WHEN AND HOW DID YOU BEGIN WORKING IN THE BANKING WORLD? My banking career began in 1993 as an agribusiness analyst with Bank One in Phoenix, Arizona. I met the Bank One Arizona director of agribusiness at a sporting event who suggested I apply for the position; a week later my banking career began. HOW DOES YOUR WORK TIE INTO YOUR PASSIONS IN LIFE? I’ve always enjoyed helping others succeed and banking allows me to do just that. I offer methods that support employee and customer’s intentions. The banking industry has opened doors allowing me to serve non-profits and be a better-engaged member of the community. IF YOU HAD TO CHOOSE A DIFFERENT JOB IN A DIFFERENT INDUSTRY, WHAT WOULD YOU CHOOSE? Full-time lacrosse coach! I’ve coached lacrosse in the Highlands Ranch area for many years. It’s great because I’m able to stay connected to a passion from my youth. WHAT DO YOU DO TO MAINTAIN A BALANCED LIFE? HOW DO YOU DISCONNECT FROM WORK? Every day I alternate between work, our family of five, and some form of downtime—typically exercise or spending time outdoors. When my workday ends, I stop checking for work-related messages; my phone and other technologies remain on mute during evening hours.

Joey Mentz
FINANCIAL CONSULTANT DENVER
Joey Mentz is managing director at Calmplimentz Consulting and a senior manager of talent and organizational development in financial services. WHEN AND HOW DID YOU BEGIN WORKING IN THE FINANCIAL WORLD? I always had an interest in finance. I actually started off as a hairdresser and worked at my family’s salon, Root & Mane in Lone Tree. Hip surgery took me out of that line of work, and I learned how to trade stocks and futures while recovering. Then once I was all healed up, I went to a financial firm with no degree or prior experience looking for a job. I told them that I use to be a hairdresser and that hair is emotional for most clients, and money is emotional for many clients. I understand how emotion motivates decisions with hair and finance. Also, I taught myself how to trade futures, so how about a job? HAVE YOU ALWAYS HAD AN ENTREPRENEURIAL SPIRIT? It’s just a way of life, everyone in my family has their own business. I remember sitting on the stairs as a child and just listening to my family discuss business, difficult conversations that needed to be had, and strategy. IF YOU HAD TO CHOOSE A DIFFERENT JOB IN A DIFFERENT INDUSTRY, WHAT WOULD YOU CHOOSE AND WHY? Surf instructor. It’s a long-term goal of mine to bring a City Wave to Lone Tree. It’s an endless-wave pool that anyone can learn to surf in hours. I think it would be an awesome after-school activity for kids. WHAT DO YOU DO TO MAINTAIN A BALANCED LIFE? “Every dead body on Mt. Everest was once a very determined individual, so maybe calm down.”— Unknown. I found that when I go slower, I move faster.

That’s been his motto during these hard times. He says OBL has had to change their concept overnight and continued to enjoy immense support from customers. Earl says many of his customers have been regulars since they opened 14 years ago. “There’s just so much love for having that core group of people that we work hard to build, because now we take care of each other and that’s what it’s all about. Kristy says she was able to keep her staff, thanks to being able to have them take on new responsibilities, the government payroll stimulus, and the continued support of her customers Cuba Cuba has been able to give back to the community during this hard time, Kristy says, giving aid to organizations such as the Delores Project. “We’ve had a lot of donations and have been able to help families in need,” she says. VIA BACI LONE TREE Jeff McCleary, General Manager at Via Baci in Lone Tree, says sanitation and safety are a priority. He says Via Baci Cheyenne Crawford, general manager of Cuba Cuba Sandwicheria
lost a quarter of its business during the partial shutdown but is rolling with the punches with their to-go orders. Jeff says Via Baci’s repeat customers have been a pillar, keeping the

restaurant going. He looks forward to reopening and says, “We are making plans to do it in a smart and safe way.” CRANELLI’S LONE TREE “What we’ve had to overcome is the unknown,” says Lasinda Grane, owner of Cranelli’s Italian Restaurant in Lone Tree. Lasinda is enthusiastic about being able to keep her staff through the pandemic and praises the staff she has behind her. “It’s been just absolutely mindblowing how much we’ve all come together as a team, as a family.” Lasinda said she was inspired to help the community when a patron in crutches stopped by to purchase a gift card for a friend in need. Lasinda says they made it their mission to send food to a hospital once a week out of their own pockets. Donations of $5 are accepted. “You just simply cannot get without giving,” says Lasinda. CASA CALIENTE HIGHLANDS RANCH It’s a juggling act trying to figure out how to operate through a pandemic for small business, says Tim Rasmussen, operating manager of Casa Caliente in Highlands Ranch, but like everyone else, they’re getting through it by the support of the community and giving back to the town. Tim says he is grateful for those who continue to support them through tough times. Their servers are able to pay their bills, “because of the generosity of the people that have come in and been customers of our restaurant for a long time.” Casa Caliente was able to supply breakfast burritos to 450 essential workers at Littleton Adventist Hospital early on in the shutdown. “That was all a donation that we did because, I mean, those guys are fighting the fight for us. It’s the least we can do,” Tim says.

GRILLIN WINGS & THINGS LONE TREE Michael Godart, part owner of Grillin Wings & Things in Lone Tree, says there have been some hurdles, but overall they’ve had a large support from their regulars through the pandemic. “We have a lot of regulars that are continually coming by a couple times a week to keep us around,” says Michael. They were able to continue serving with curbside pickup orders, and Michael says he and his co-owner Shannon Barnes feel blessed for that. Grillin Wings & Things was also able to donate to Lone Tree Eats, a program initiated by the City of Lone Tree in which residents could donate for meals to be delivered to frontline workers. PERRY’S STEAKHOUSE & GRILL LONE TREE At Perry’s Restaurants, the safety and commitment to providing the best service they can during unprecedented times has been apparent. “We appreciate the trust and confidence of our guests who allow us to continue serving our community,” says Lesa Sorrentino, chief strategy officer and chief marketing officer for Perry’s.
