Welcome Back, Kirkland! WE DID IT. We stayed home, we flattened the curve, and we refrained from overloading the healthcare system. Now, who is ready to get back to our “normal” lifestyle? Our Kirkland Lifestyle. I’m so very happy to see our city reopening!

Our hearts go out to those who suffered any tragedy or loss due to this virus, and we will continue to pray for your families. This is far from over, but we are encouraged to see the light at the end of the tunnel and excited to get back to some semblance of normalcy.
Kirkland Heritage Society, King County Archives, City of Kirkland, Kirkland Wednesday Market, Kirkland Downtown Association, Lindsay Sellin; ARNP, RD, Karoline Simmons; Cherished Vintage
While staying apart, our city came together to provide relief to small businesses. We all did our best to stay open and modified our practices accordingly. We supported each other in any way possible as we stared fear in the face and embraced each other from afar. It makes me happy to see Kirkland go back to it’s roots of togetherness. We lent each other a helping hand where it was needed while remaining hands-off. My hope is that never again in any of our lives or our childrens’ lives will we see this kind of crisis, but I take comfort in knowing that our community is here for each other.

The first Juanita Beach bath house is at right, Juanita Junction is in the distance and today’s NE 116th Street cuts through the trees up what was then called Little Finn Hill (Today’s Finn Hill was to the photographer’s back and was then called “Big Finn Hill”). The paper squares hanging from the radiator caps of some of the cars served as proof the entrance fee had been paid.

02 The Juanita Beach Cabins was a separate business from L. L. Forbes’
Juanita Beach, but Les and Alicia Forbes managed that business for its owners for many years. They were painted white with white trim and locals often referred to them as simply the “red and white cabins”. They remained for about 15 years after King County created Juanita Beach Park, but in their latter years fell into disrepair and became more of a low income rental property than resort cabins. They were demolished in the early 1970s, but one was salvaged and remains today as an outbuilding on private property on Finn Hill.

08 08 The 1920s roared for the beaches at Juanita as well! Here in the mid to
late 1920s we see Juanita Beach has gone to a .25 cent admission charge, by the carload. This was a problem at first because groups would come in several cars, park all but one outside the resort and then pile everyone into one car just to ends for the fixed price of a quarter. At left are the Juanita Beach cabins and in the distance coming off the Juanita Trestle is a gravel wharf where a barge is being loaded. This wharf’s ruins are still visible today from the now pedestrian-only trestle. A gravel pit owned by the City of Seattle stood on the site of today’s Juanita High School and gravel was hauled by dump truck to the wharf and dumped into barges, where it was taken to Seattle for use as aggregate in road building.
