going into middle school who were starting on more advanced math skills.” Online sessions are one hour, with no more than two kids per instructor in individual Zoom rooms. As with in-center classes, Mathnasium recommends students attend three tutoring sessions per week, if possible, or up to 12 times a month. If for some reason a student is very busy one week, classes can be added onto the following week, so it’s flexible. “We have a lot of parents who were always worried about the summer slide, but now parents are also worried about the COVID slide. This is a slide that started happening in March.” In his three centers, online tutoring is available six days a week during the summer - usually 10:00 to 5:00 on weekdays and 12:00 to 3:00 on Sundays; however, these days and times may change. Once the school year starts, they’ll have later hours. “We plan to keep our online program robust throughout the school year and will continue to do the same type of thing that we were doing at the end of this school year - supporting them with the new types of assignments that they’ll be getting,” said Sam. The centers are offering free assessments and free trial sessions so parents can see for themselves if Mathnasium will work for their children. He isn’t sure yet when his centers will be reopening for in-person instruction. When they do, all staff members will be wearing masks and practicing social distancing. But, he feels that some students will continue with Mathnasium@home. “Now that the genie is out of the bottle, I think some students will just stay online,” said Sam. Parents have told him that the online platform is more convenient for them and their children. Other parents, though, still prefer the in-center instruction, especially for their younger kids, who may have a harder time managing the online technology. “What I envision in the future is a world where my business is able to accommodate both types of parents, and to also be able to do it better than we ever did before COVID.” For more information about Mathnasium and its programs, go to mathnasium.com. 16

WITH SCHOOLS BEING CLOSED SINCE MARCH, AND KIDS OFF FOR THE SUMMER, PARENTS ARE REALLY IN NEED OF A RELAXING GETAWAY. Fortunately, there is a great place to do just that and it’s only a short drive away. “We like to say that we’re close enough yet far enough removed from the hustle and bustle of a downtown area,” said Edd Karlan, Director of Sales & Marketing at Château Élan Winery & Resort. Located in Braselton, about 40 minutes from downtown Atlanta, Château Élan has a multitude of choices for fun and relaxation. With its vineyard and winery, seven restaurants, world-class European spa, resort style pool, two 18-hole golf courses, a par-three golf course, beach volleyball, and hiking and nature trails, there’s something for everyone. What many guests, especially parents, seem to want to do when they first get here, said Edd, is to enjoy the luxurious resort style pool. They want to sit and relax by the pool, while enjoying great cocktails or lunch accompanied by a bottle of Château Elan wine. “We grow some of the grapes here, and all the wine is produced and bottled at the winery,” said Edd. “We are the only full-service winery resort in the Southeast that has a functioning, operating winery on its premises.” The winery is open every day except Monday. Guests can take a 35-minute tour of the vineyards and winery, and then get to taste anywhere from six to eight of their varietal wines. As for dining, their restaurants include a steak house, an authentic Irish pub with live music, great beer, and fish and chips, and a sports bar featuring outstanding bourbons and live blues music. There’s also a restaurant offering southern and seasonal cuisine, plus others featuring breakfast, brunch, lunch and snacks. The grounds and buildings on the over 3500 acres have received an expansive $25 million renovation that was completed in November 2019. Guest rooms at the Inn are modern, but reflect their European heritage. On weekends, guest can also choose to stay in the Spa Mansion, which has 11 spa suites located directly in the European spa. There are many indulgent and relaxing services to be enjoyed, such as facials and full massage treatments. “It’s like a separate resort within a resort with some oversized spa suite rooms and special amenities,” said Edd. “There’s a restaurant in the spa as well. Not only are you getting away in the main resort, but you can also have a getaway within the getaway at the spa.” They have some wonderful couple’s packages, and according to Edd, one of the most popular is the Château Élan Couples Massage. It’s an 80-minute dual massage therapy treatment that can be a hot stone, deep tissue, or Pool

Swedish massage. These are given in their large two-person spa massage rooms.

Another favorite is their Summer Lovin’ package. This includes two nights at the Inn, a bottle of their magnificent Château Élan wine, and a $25 resort credit per night, to be used toward any resort activity during the stay. Other packages and more detailed information are also available on their website at www.chateauelan.com, and on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube. All restaurants are open to the public, as is the spa, and reservations are highly recommended for all facilities and activities offered. Edd and the entire staff at Château Élan Winery & Resort want their guests to enjoy a luxurious stay while staying safe. This is why all team members are temperature checked when they arrive for work, and are also trained in keeping themselves and guests safe. Because keeping their staff safe is also a high priority, all team members are provided with and wear recommended Personal Protective Equipment. Employees also routinely spray down all surfaces, and the resort uses adhesive label stickers on all door handles that are self-cleaning. In addition, they provide plenty of signage about social distancing. Château Élan Winery & Resort looks forward to continuing to provide great experiences for their guests, whether they’re there for one day, one night, or multiple nights. Guests can be assured of a relaxing, stress free, and safe excursion right in their own home state. “Our location is unique in that we’re so close, yet so removed from the action,” said Edd. “Once you enter our gates, it’s a really a beautiful experience both visually, and of course, experientially.” 20

The Butterfly Fund is at work across the nation with partner hospitals such as Children’s Hospital Los Angeles; New York Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital; and Children’s National Medical Center in Washington. Right here at home, Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta is receiving the greatest support from the Butterfly Fund and is touching the greatest number of families in need! In 2019 alone almost $150,000 in financial support was given to Georgia families and over the last twenty years well over $4.5 million has been given to “help families focus on survival” across our nation. The Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation Butterfly Fund covers expenses for rent and mortgage payments; utility bills; car loan and insurance payments; and, travel expenses associated with treatment away from home. Additionally, the Butterfly Fund assists with items not covered by insurance such as special medications, long-term rehabilitation services, hearing aids, wigs, prosthetic devices, home health services, as well as the family’s mental health by providing professional counseling services that best support the entire family. A bittersweet realization for many is that the Butterfly Fund also covers end of life care and funeral expenses for the families as well. The work of the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation is essential for so many reasons and the Butterfly Fund is one of the most cherished and amazing things that they, as an organization, does across the nation.

“THE LANTERN LIGHTING CEREMONY IS TRULY A MAGICAL, INSPIRING EXPERIENCE FOR OUR PARTICIPANTS AND FAMILIES.”

THE COVID-19 VIRTUAL PIVOT As a result of the coronavirus pandemic the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation, like so many not for profit organizations, has had to cancel all in person fundraising events for 2020. Founded in 2014, Starry Night Walk to Cure Childhood Brain Tumors, a twilight event which encourages communities to come together to raise awareness, build community, and raise life-changing funds for pediatric brain tumor research and family support.” Heather Held, Family and Community Outreach Manager for PBTF said that, “the lantern Lighting ceremony is truly a magical, inspiring experience for our participants and families.” Heather further elaborated that “people love an activity-based event where people can feel a connection to the mission and that our families still needed to feel a sense if community.” This year, Starry Night will be a series of individual challenges designed to inspire communities, in a truly grass-roots movement, to support the mission of PBTF. With incredible activities ranging from an 8 hour walk or endurance challenge to honor our caregivers, to dressing up in your own superhero outfit for a week, these challenges enable everyone to shine while giving in creative and fun ways! “The beauty of our program is that it is designed to meet our fundraisers exactly where they are at,” said Heather. “They can activate their fundraising challenge how, when, and why they choose.” In celebration of the national campaign, everyone will gather together, but apart, on October 3rd, as they light their lanterns for thirty days in honor of our “stars”. Starry Night, will continue despite the current global pandemic because as Heather said, “brain tumors don’t stop for Covid-19.” Heather also asks us to remember that, “thirteen families will have their world changed today when they hear the words ‘your child has a brain tumor,’ and that it will happen again tomorrow and the day after that, and the day after that.” For more information about the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation, Starry Night, or other fundraising please go to the website: cureforkids.org. 24

Imagine a world in which most people have grown up with solid financial foundations and healthy relationships with money. The resources exist, and the opportunities to improve lives and to leave financial literacy as a valuable legacy to your children can be yours! 28

M AT E R I A L S

PIÑLLAMA

+ Cardboard + White crepe paper + Construction paper + Glue + Scissors + Beads, yarn, pom poms, etc.

DIRECTIONS 1. Take your cardboard and cut two pieces into the shape of a llama (we found a stencil online). Then, cut strips of cardboard the depth you want your llama to be. You’ll connect these to either side of the llama cutouts to enclose your piñata. 2. Glue your strip of cardboard all along the edge of one side of your llama, then glue to the other side. (Be sure to leave a hole you can close up later so you can fill it with your favorite candy!) 3. Starting at the neck, cover the front, back and sides of your llama with white crepe paper, cutting a slit every half inch or so to create the traditional piñata look. 4. Cover all remaining sides of the neck and head with white construction paper, cut to fit your design. 5. Using construction paper, beads, pom poms, tassels, buttons, etc., add some flair to the rest of your llama! Bonus points for incorporating different shapes and textures into your final product.

and from seventeen countries across world. Everyone is brewing a stout and Weathered Soul will provide the base recipe. While everyone will be working with the same basic recipe all brewers have been asked to place put their own spin on the Black is Beautiful beer. Midtown’s own Steady Hand Brewery is leading the charge here in Atlanta! This now global initiative spoke to Brian Sullivan, head brewer at Steady Hand brewery and he immediately jumped at the opportunity. “Craft brewers embrace collaboration and the response has been overwhelmingly positive,” said Sullivan. Immediately Brian reached out to a couple of friends including one of Atlanta’s hottest chef personalities, Chef Deborah VanTrece of Twisted Soul Cookhouse and Pours and “iconic DirtySouth legend” DJ Jelly. The plans are to introduce a unique flavor of the region and to collaborate in the creative process,” said Sullivan. “Deborah will be creating an element of the beer to impart a truly Southern flavor to our own special version of Black is Beautiful.” We already can guess that this incredible Twisted Soul Cookhouse and Pours influenced Steady hand Stout might have notes of cherry, some peanut, or even sweet potato. Organizers of this collaboration are asking brewers to support social justice initiatives and make a commitment to stand for social equality in their communities, across this country and around the world. Proceeds will be going to Color of Change, the nation’s largest online racial justice organization as well as local Atlanta not for profit empowerment organizations like Page Turners Make Great Learners. While raising money is important to this project, Weathered Souls and Steady Hand believe that the real issue is “bringing education and information, which will bring forth change to a system that has fractured so many families and has been broken for decades.” The release date for Steady Hand’s version of Black is Beautiful is scheduled for August 15th and will feature DJ Jelly and culinary creations from many of Atlanta’s black owned restaurants including Twisted Soul Cookhouse and Pours. 34
