For Auld Lang Syne AS THE SAYING GOES, TIME FLIES WHEN YOU’RE HAVING FUN. And time sure has flown by this year as we can’t believe we’ve put together the final issue of Frederick Lifestyle in 2019! It seems like just yesterday we were sitting down to write our July letter to all of you, introducing Frederick Lifestyle. While we certainly don’t want to wish our lives away, we’re always looking toward the future. Whether it’s planning our next issue or developing story ideas for the

next year, we’re often already fast-forwarded to future months before the current month has even begun. The fast-paced lifestyle this industry calls for can often make it difficult to really settle down and absorb what’s going on around us and, before we know it, the year is over, and it’s time to move forward again. So this December, we hope you take the time to slow down a little bit. With the holiday season upon us, we hope you make the time to take it all in. Enjoy your time with family and friends, bask in the magic of the winter season, reflect on past

BEHIND EVERY

BUSINESS IS A STORY

Dynamic Automotive wanted a bank that saw them as more than just a number. Founders José Bueso and Lee Forman started Dynamic Automotive in a private garage—purchasing the tools they needed at auctions and sales. Together with current CEO Dwayne Myers, they’ve now expanded the business to new locations, created an apprenticeship program, and built a culture of quality service and giving back to the community. When other banks saw numbers, FCB saw value that went beyond the bottom line—and provided support, guidance, and financial services. Whether you need a business loan, cash management and merchant services, or day-to-day banking for your business or family, FCB can help with your next chapter. Come say hello! LOCAL LIMELIGHT BORN TO TAP

LIVING THE DREAM

“I TAPED NICKELS TO THE BOTTOMS OF MY SNEAKERS AND BEGAN TO DANCE ON THE TILE,” JUSTIN LEWIS SAYS. He was just 5 years old when he saw the movie Tap, inspiring his life-long love of tap dancing. For him, it was passionate and exciting to watch—Justin was born to dance. “I come from a dancing family. My grandfather was a tap dancer in college. When my dad was younger, he was in a family act with his brothers performing songs and dancing throughout the D.C. area, and before college, my mother studied ballet. Performers themselves, they got on board when I wanted to tap.” What followed from there were tap lessons, travel, performances and rehearsals—too many to count. In Maryland, as he grew, dance was important to him, but it became solidified the day he had a sit-down conversation with his father. “When I was 13 years old, my father asked me what I wanted to do with my life,” Justin says. “And I remember saying to him, I want to find a way to do this the rest of my life. He said to me, you can find a way to do it if you work hard.” Those words of encouragement fueled his dream. Following college, Justin began his career teaching tap at

a studio in Virginia, and before he knew it, others began to seek him out to teach their kids. He expanded his network from simply teaching individuals to teaching master classes, and also choreographing for studios. At the same time, he was dancing with other performance groups. That opportunity to continue tap dancing was important to Justin.

“As I perform, the rest of the world falls away,” Justin says. “I feel on top of the world, like nothing in life matters. I forget about the issues and troubles in life and focus on the sound and the art and how I can tell a story with my movement.” 16

34TH ANNUAL KRIS KRINGLE PROCESSION Embrace the holiday spirit and let your inner Cheermeister out! The Kris Kringle procession, entering its 34th year, is a must-do for the family! Each year, Frederick City lights up with the holiday spirit as local community groups march through the streets of Downtown Frederick. It’s part small-town charm, part old-world holiday wonder. Children from across the county, dressed as reindeer, snowflakes, elves and angels, participate in the procession alongside German/ English characters of yesteryear (Pelsnickle, Weinacht Man and Kris Kringle) as well as modern favorites like Frosty the Snowman, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and Jack Frost. The parade ends in Baker Park for the ceremonial lighting of the city Christmas tree and a concert featuring the Carillon Bells. The Kris Kringle procession runs from the corner of South Carroll Street to East Patrick Street, turns right onto North Market Street,

m Sweden A BREAK FROM TRADITION

VACATIONING DURING THE WINTER HOLIDAYS IS GROWING IN POPULARITY AND COULD BE A SPECTACULAR GIFT TO SHARE WITH LOVED ONES. If you decide to forgo the traditional for something unique, Sweden is an unforgettable northern destination that embodies the sparkling spirit of the season. Upon arrival in the land of Jultomten, which refers to the Swedish Santa that looks more like a gnome, you will want to explore Stockholm. Stockholm, the capital of Sweden is famous for its outdoor holiday markets festooned with lights. The tallest living Christmas tree in the world can be found in the Skeppsbron neighborhood. Also, the Grand Synagogue near Kungsträdgården park has a public menorah lighting for the Jewish Festival of Lights, Hanukkah. The country is vast, and along with that, comes adventure and unique opportunities. Maria Ploberg, Press Officer for the Embassy of Sweden in the Washington, D.C. cites several essential Swedish cultural experiences that are not to be missed in wintertime. Maria says that the daily Christmas market is a must-see in Gamla Stan (Old Town) in Stockholm. Wander through the music-filled streets and immerse yourself in the wafting fragrance of baking gingerbread and simmering glögg. It’s here that you can The Largest Real Christmas Tree in the World

TRAVEL DESTINATION

(CON TI N U ED)

In Old Town, the narrow streets and the old buildings make for a cozy winter stroll. And if you happen to be in Stockholm during New Year’s Eve, you should visit Skansen, where they ring the New Year’s bells at midnight” “Swedes are crazy about their glögg!” Maria says. “Glögg” is a warm, spiced and sugared mulled red wine served with raisins and blanched almonds in it. It is not uncommon to drink it at different social gatherings throughout the entire month of December in Sweden.” “In Old Town, the narrow streets and the old buildings make for a cozy winter stroll. And if you happen to be in Stockholm during New Year’s Eve, you should visit Skansen, where they ring the New Year’s bells at midnight,” Maria says. While there, visit one of the many warm and welcoming cafes and restaurants. Swedes

celebrate

a

distinctive

regional

custom

called

“Lussenatten” that ushers in the holiday season. “Lussenatten,” or Lucia night, held every Dec. 13, is symbolically the year’s longest night. Lucia is an ancient mythical figure who brings light, festivity and hope into the winter darkness. As a part of this holiday tradition, children throughout Sweden dress in full-length white gowns with red sashes and crowns with lit candles to represent Lucia. The children form a procession and visit schools and workplaces, often in the dim early morning hours, to sing traditional holiday songs and get everyone into a festive mood. Exploring outside the cities in the Swedish countryside, winter sports like ice skating, cross country skiing and ice fishing are readily available. For a magical experience combined with adventure, head to the north country or Lapland, where the temperature in wintertime stays around 20 degrees. The farther north, the less daylight, so be prepared for darker days; however, it’s here you may have the unfor-

Yule Goat

gettable experience of seeing the Northern Lights. In the hinterland, another whimsical holiday activity could be speeding through the countryside on a reindeer sled. And while you are visiting, why not stay overnight in the incredible ICEHOTEL in the Swedish village of Jukkasjärvi, 200 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle. Getting there might seem like a hurdle, but Sherill Stitz of Platinum Travel Associates says using a travel agency to help with the details can create a seamless experience. An agent can make traveling to Sweden far more accessible and affordable than travelers might expect. Agents have more suppliers, discounts and deals at their fingertips than the average person can find online. If making all the arrangements of a holiday getaway are a bit intimidating, Sherill says a seven- to 14-day Scandinavian cruise in the Baltic Sea may be more your style. “Cruising is nice because it’s like a floating boutique hotel. Combining multiple lodging, dining and entertainment options in one place can make vacation less stressful,” Sherill says. “By adding land excursions at each port of call, travelers can immerse themselves in local cultures.” 28

Christmas Market, Gothenburg, Sweden

Not the traveling kind but still want to experience a little taste of Sweden? Visit the annual Julmarknad or holiday market at The House of Sweden, a part of the Swedish Embassy in Washington, D.C., on Dec. 7 to hunt for unique gifts and food of Sweden. Offerings at this market include Kosta Boda and Orrefors glassware and seasonal décors like Christmas elves and candelabras. Take a Swedish Fika break, which involves strong, dark coffee served with cake, and enjoy Swedish Christmas carols performed during the Santa Lucia Procession. Whether Stockholm

music pop-culture phenomenon and why it’s a must-attend event this December. A German turned Brit, George Frideric Händel was born in Germany in 1685. Beethoven said of Händel, “He is the greatest composer that ever lived.” High praise from one of the other greatest composers who ever lived! Handel wrote many operas, sonatas and organ concertos. Among them was his most famous and sustained work, a musical composition called Messiah. It was the popular music of its time, flashy and avant-garde, unlike the standard music of the mid-18th century. Soloists were encouraged to change the original notes to show off their voices. Messiah was first performed in Dublin, Ireland, in 1742. (Fun Fact: Frederick was officially founded three years

CELEBRATING WITH THE MESSIAH

later, in 1745, making the Messiah Oratorio and our town the same age). The reception in Dublin was resounding, with

more than 700 people in attendance, and women were encouraged to wear dresses without hoops to allow for more patrons in the theater. Over time, the performance of Handel’s Messiah migrated from Easter to Christmas and has since become a regular holiday tradition for millions of people around the world. Fast forward 275 years, and you can find a holiday performance of the Messiah in nearly every major city in the world. Frederick has its own production of Handel’s Messiah here at the Weinberg Center. This year is the 25th anniversary of its appearance in Frederick’s tradition performed by the Frederick Children’s Chorus. FredCC.org/Messiah | WeinburgCenter.org
