Meridian Lifestyle | September 2020
EACH DAY OF THE KINDNESS WEEK STARTING SEPTEMBER 14TH, THERE IS AN ACTSOF-KINDNESS CHALLENGE FOR THE COMMUNITY AND FOR THE SCHOOLS T O P A R T I C I P A T E I N . ” “IN THE NEXT 7 MINUTES, A CHILD IN THE U.S. WILL BE BULLIED. It may be the son or daughter of someone you know. Worse, it may be your own child.” This startling statistic is a reminder that despite the modified school year in the Treasure Valley, students are still getting “dissed” on Facebook and cellphones are flooded with mean texts. More children now turn to online activities during the summer break and studies show that 1 in 2 online gamers have at some point been bullied within a game. Even children as young as 6 years old have been known to hack into online interactive activities to sabotage each other’s games. “Meanwhile, only four out of 100 adults will step in to stop it. The rest — 85 percent — will do nothing”, says Melissa Nelson. Melissa Nelson, the Founder and President of the Community Kindness Movement (CKM), knows the impact of harassment firsthand. The Community Kindness Movement was founded in 2015 by Melissa and her family because their own child was dealing with bullying. The family chose to perform acts of kindness, sending twenty-six single yellow roses anonymously to the school which ultimately brought awareness of harassment and

The Nelson Family has made it a tradition to deliver yellow roses anonymously
The Nelson family started CKM in Bannock County, Idaho, where the first Community Kindness Week was proclaimed. As a growing non-profit organization, the Community Kindness Movement continued to spread this movement of compassion with the partnership of the Idaho PTA Congress. In 2018, Mayor Tammy de Weerd encouraged a relationship with West Ada School District paving the way for their school program to be approved by the biggest district in Idaho. Last year during the Community Kindness Week, current-Mayor, Robert Simmons, presented Melissa Nelson a Community Kindness Week Proclamation on behalf of the City of Meridian. Says Nelson, “Children experience bullying each day, whether it be at home, online, in school, or out in our communities. Children have not yet developed the coping skills to brush off devastating effects. It’s our job to give our children the tools needed to be successful in life and to learn the valuable attributes that make them The CKM surprises Mrs. Lang’s Classroom in Kuna, Idaho on January Kindness Day 2020
successful. By teaching our children resilience and kindness, we can help teach them some of the most valuable life skills to get them through adolescence.” This year, the community members are galvanized with Governor Brad Little’s support in CKM’s efforts to advocate for Bullying and Suicide Prevention.

ELEGANCE DAY DREAMING ABOUT A RETURN TO THE ELEGANCE OF THE 30’S AND 40’S OR PERHAPS A FASHION RENAISSANCE AS TO CLOTHING FASHIONS, I WILL FOREVER REMAIN STUCK IN THE 1930’S AND 40’S. My parents are responsible, not only because of the way they dressed, but because my mother was addicted to movies which my sister and I watched with her while my railroad switchman father worked nights or swing shifts at the railroad yard in Idaho Falls. Because we did not own an automobile until 1948, we had to walk about a mile to town. Seeing the bright neon lights on nearly every building and entering the grand theaters only heightened our movie experience. The Rio had a huge awning extending out over the sidewalks, glowing with hundreds of lights, a ticket booth made from beautiful green stone trimmed with brass, and a marble

man taking tickets, dressed in a field marshals’ uniform with gold braid and buttons. Young women, dressed in gold and maroon, or blue and silver satin costumes, guided us to our seats with their long red lensed flashlights. All the lights, the Rio and the costumes have all long since vanished. Among my earliest childhood memories was watching beautiful and handsome movie stars wearing glittering and elegant clothing in the black and white detective movies or musicals we watched at the Rio, Paramount, Gaety or Rex theaters. My imagination was thrilled beyond measure during those early formative years when basic attitudes about life became set in stone. Everyone seemed so glamourous. Both the good guys and the bad guys wore fedora felt hats, pin striped suits, handkerchief in the breast pocket, with neck ties, and highly polished wing tipped leather oxford shoes. Men were nearly always clean shaven except for the occasional thin Clark Gable style moustache. Hair was suave and short, glistening with Vitalis, every hair in place. Think Tyrone Power, Alan Ladd, Nat King Cole or Men in a 1930's drink bar 20

Fred Astaire. In those days men often wore hats and neckties even at ball games. Women also wore elegant hats during that era, along with gloves, matching handbags and shoes. Their hair was softly waved or curled with every strand in place. Think Lauren Bacall, Rita Hayworth, Lana Turner or Lucille Ball. Women usually wore dresses or skirts and jackets with shoulder pads. The everyday dress featured fun prints, floral patterns or dots. Their slinky floor length sequin trimmed evening gowns reflected sophisticated elegance. Ginger Rogers was my favorite movie star from the black and white film era, especially in her films dancing with Fred Astaire. Soft light glowed from her hair and countenance, and from her white or black satin gowns trimmed with sequins or fur. My favorite Roger-Astaire film was “Roberta,” a work of art stunning beyond measure. Clothing worn by average Americans was strongly influenced by the movies. Dad kept two sharply creased Hart Schaffner Marx suits hanging in the closet along with a supply of carefully folded heavily starched white dress shirts ready to be worn at Elks Lodge gatherings or big band dances. The large dance halls and big bands have also vanished from our town and the fraternal organizations are struggling to keep members.
Linden F. Bateman (my father) wearing Hart, Schaffner, and Marx suit
My father wore only collared shirts, always tucked in, and never Levi jeans, preferring suntan pants and a fedora hat, even for yard work. I cannot imagine my father wearing cargo shorts and sandals or a tee shirt with some profound message printed on the front. People were not bill boards. I have a dream-like precious childhood memory of my tall slender mother dressed in her long sleek gold trimmed black satin gown purchased in 1939 and accented with a black hat and elbow length black gloves. We still own the gown which has frequently been modeled in vintage fashion shows.

TIMES PAST (CONTINUED)
Mother was a teacher who wore only dresses or skirts in class, as did all my female teachers. Male teachers almost always wore jackets and ties. For the first time in history, Katherine Hepburn and Marlena Dietrich made trousers popular for women, including my mother, but they were mostly worn for relaxation or outdoor activities. Today some young women have never owned or worn a dress but they will sometimes wear shorts to display decorative tattoos on their legs. The style of the 1940’s continued into the 1950’s. Check any 1950’s Idaho high school yearbook and you will see every girl wearing a midcalf dress in class or skirts with collared blouses or sweaters. Red lipstick was very popular. On game days about 100 girls in the Pep Club at Idaho Falls High School wore black skirts and sweaters with orange and black school emblems, white collars and black and white saddle oxfords. The drill team wore cream colored skirts and orange sweaters, while lettermen wore black letter sweaters with orange stipes on the left sleeve. Pep band members wore their orange sweaters. Those truly grand and exciting school traditions have vanished. Boys wore cotton or wool slacks or 501 Levi jeans, which had to look new to be in style, collared shirts, v-necked sweaters, polished leather shoes and carefully combed hair often garnished with Wild Rose hair oil. Today the typical dress for both boys and girls is denim jeans, often with holes torn in the front, shorts, tee shirts or sweat shirts. One thing is certain, however, todays clothing is more comfortable than ever before in American history. I often daydream about a return to the elegance of the 30’s and 40’s or that our society would experience a sort of fashion renaissance, but it will likely never happen. We are too fondly attached to carefree, casual comfort. EDITORS NOTE: Linden B. Bateman has resided his entire life in Idaho. He served 16 years in the Idaho House of Representatives, including 4 years in legislative leadership as majority caucus chairman. An author of many articles on history and politics, Linden currently lives in Idaho Falls with his wife, Deann.

RESOURCES FOR CURRENT INFORMATION AS IT BECOMES AVAILABLE. THE 2020-21 SCHOOL YEAR WILL BE UNIQUE FOR SCHOOLS ACROSS THE NATION DUE TO COVID-19. On July 9, the Governor’s Office, State Board of Education and State Department of Education released the Idaho Back to School Framework. The Idaho Department of Health and Welfare and Idaho’s seven local public health districts helped create and contribute to the Idaho Back to School Framework. 32

BOISE SCHOOL DISTRICT Dan Hollar, spokesperson for the Boise School District, said each school in the district has developed a building implementation plan that is in alignment with the district. Boise School District Schools sent their implementation plan to the community on July 6 and had planned to edit and adjust as needed. Hollar said the district will be prepared to support, care for, and most importantly, teach their students whether students are unable to attend their traditional on-campus school or children begin to experience “COVID-19 closures” similar to what happened in the Spring. “Every student deserves access to a great education, delivered by a highly-qualified Boise School District teacher, regardless of whether the teaching and learning occur in a traditional classroom or online,” Hollar said. “To that end, we are building an online program to be launched this Fall that not only meets our standards but our parents’ and students’ expectations, as well.” Hollar highlighted that masks will be expected when students are unable to social distance and will be provided if requested. Handwashing stations will be available throughout schools in the district and hand sanitizer will be available for all staff, families and students. Meetings with parents and the community will be virtual when possible and visitors will be required to make an appointment to enter school buildings, except under emergency circumstances. With a new expectation in safety and education, the Boise School District will stand by their core beliefs and interests. “Our neighborhood public schools play a critical role in the vibrancy, unity and well-being of our community,” Hollar said. “While pivoting to respond to an unpredictable future, we must remain firmly grounded in our core beliefs and interests.” BISHOP KELLY HIGH SCHOOL Idaho’s only Catholic High School, Bishop Kelly, started their 2020-21 school year on August 1. The Catholic school’s Board of Governance approved their 202021 Instructional Plan on June 22 after being shared at the Virtual Town Hall meeting on June 17. The online meeting was hosted by the President of Bishop Kelly High School, Rich Raimondi, and Principal Mike Caldwell. The Plan implements four main goals that the school took from 602 parent surveys: 1. Make the learning experience exceptional for all Bishop Kelly students, faculty and staff. 2. Build a plan that provides flexibility, adaptability and options for their students, faculty/staff and school. 3. Keep Bishop Kelly students, faculty/staff and community safe and healthy. 4. Engage their parents and community as partners to the overall learning experience of Bishop Kelly students. Bishop Kelly is planning to have all students and staff on campus daily by establishing appropriate and safe social distancing protocols in classrooms, hallways and gathering spaces. They will rearrange areas on campus to maximize physical space. CONTINUED >

OUR TOWN (CONTINUED)
During the parent virtual town hall meeting, 75% of parents asked the school to provide hand washing stations and sanitizing throughout the school. Thirty-nine percent of parents voted that the school did not need any additional safety measures as long as they followed the already placed state and federal guidelines. Many parents urged that face-to-face learning was the best option for their children. “The highest number of comments were basically ‘you need to open up,” Raimondi, said during the virtual meeting. WEST ADA SCHOOL DISTRICT The West Ada School District also used parent surveys to provide important input for the planning of the upcoming school year. The district claimed the most common theme and feedback from the parents was that their children need to continue to learn in school at high levels for the 2020-21 school year. The district has a pandemic plan that has been approved by Central District Health. West Ada will be opening on August 27 and giving their students the option to attend school as normal with extra safety measures in place or attend online classes through their Virtual School House. Each student will go through an assessment to identify learning gaps that may need to be addressed. West Ada School District purchased technology ensuring every student will be one-to-one with a device. K-2 students will be issued a tablet or laptop while students 3-12 will be issued laptops. The district will be addressing concerns regarding lack of internet access and will be coordinating with internet providers for a lower-cost connection. After acknowledging that things can change very quickly, West Ada has created three scenarios to always be prepared. “Green,” being normal school operations, includes no community transmission and is the first scenario. Schools will run as normal with extra safety precautions and training on how to be prepared for the district’s “Yellow” and “Red” plans. “Yellow,” is an alternate day schedule, including minimal to moderate community transmission. This plan was created to avoid complete school closure and will have half of the students attending classes every other day. The “Yellow” scenario will be determined by guidance from Central District Health and other Idaho governmental authorities. The last plan is the “Red” scenario, meaning West Ada is experiencing substantial community transmission, will move to a completely online system where school buildings will be closed.

IN APRIL GOVERNOR BRAD LITTLE ANNOUNCED HIS REOPENING PLAN AND CREATED THE ECONOMIC REBOUND ADVISORY COMMITTEE, COMPRISED OF BUSINESS LEADERS INCLUDING KENT ORAM, PRESIDENT/CEO OF IDAHO CENTRAL CREDIT UNION.
HOW DID YOU GET STARTED IN THE FINANCIAL INDUSTRY? I grew up working on the farm and knew I didn’t want to do that forever. In college, I studied computers and began working as the Data Processing Manager at ICCU in January 1984. I continued to grow in various positions throughout my career at Idaho Central and was promoted to CEO in October 2007. WHAT IS IT THAT YOU ARE MOST PROUD OF IN YOUR WORK? I am proud of the Green Team and the tremendous work we do on behalf of our members and our communities. We are important to their financial security. We are a safe place – a place of refuge. We are predictable even when everything seems to be unpredictable. WHAT IS THE CURRENT SITUATION WITH FINANCING FOR BUSINESSES, HOMEOWNERS, AND INVESTORS?
Kent Oram and family
Many people have experienced hardships over the past several months. We have been there for our members with skipped loan payments, relief loan options, the PPP program and have helped in many other ways on a case-by-case basis. We are optimistic that our economy and affected members will be able to recover as we find ways to live with this virus present in our world. It is very rewarding to be able to help our members during this time. The future is unpredictable, but loan rates are strong. People are still buying cars and homes. Many of our members who have not had a history of saving, are able to put money in their savings accounts. We remain flexible to adapt in this changing, unprecedented environment. HOW ARE FINANCIAL INSTITUTIONS MEETING THE CURRENT NEEDS OF RESIDENTS AND BUSINESSES? COVID-19 has forced us to change our internal processes, but hasn’t stopped us from providing the services our members need. We have shifted to focusing more on
what is your advice to younger generations on how to handle t heir f i n an ce s? TIP 1 Establish a budget - When you don’t track your finances, you have no idea where your money is going and can easily spend more than you earn. TIP 2 Save automatically - Setting up automatic savings – it puts your extra cash out of sight and out of mind.
our electronic services and many members appreciate being able to transact without stepping foot in a physical branch location. We have shifted job responsibilities of some team members to cover the increases in certain areas of business that have increased as a result of member service modifications.
TIP 3 Start investing - The earlier you start investing, the more time your money has to grow and the more potential you’ll have to earn. TIP 4 Review your expenditures - At least once a year, review what you’re spending and see where you can cut costs or adjust.
ON A PERSONAL LEVEL, WHAT IS SOMETHING YOU ARE PASSIONATE ABOUT AWAY FROM WORK?
TIP 5 Biggest tip of all. Trust people. Believe in those around

WHAT DO YOU THINK ARE THE BEST SKILLS THAT YOU BRING TO YOUR JOB? [My] best skills are problem solving and communication. In Business Brokerage, every deal is unique with its own set of circumstances and challenges. This is where over 25 years of industry experience is helpful. Although each transaction is different there is likely a similar past scenario that I have encountered that will help me overcome the situation, communicate tactfully with all parties involved and successfully get the deal to the Closing Table. WHAT IS THE DEFINITION OF SUCCESS FOR YOU, PERSONALLY AND PROFESSIONALLY? Personally, it’s enjoying my family, all types of outdoor activities and physically challenging myself. Professionally success means striving to do the best I possibly can for each client; then, success will follow. OUTSIDE OF WORK/PROFESSION, DO YOU HAVE SKILLS OR TALENTS THAT MOST PEOPLE DO NOT KNOW ABOUT? Well, I like to think I am a “skilled” tennis player but I am kind of old and really not very good!
+ PROBLEM SOLVING + OUTDOOR ENTHUSIAST
WHAT ARE SOME CAUSES YOU CARE ABOUT? As an Idaho Native, preserving our natural resources, open spaces and primitive areas for now and future generations is important. These are the qualities that make Idaho such a great place to live.
