HEY SOFU! You might have heard about the McBride Sisters (featured right here in SFL) being distributed in Trader Joe’s stores. You might know about the Brown Estate and Tasting Room in California. But did you know about the many more Black-owned wineries and liquor distributors to explore? Here in Atlanta, Gwen Jackson runs Liquid Distributors. In Vermont, there’s Krista Scruggs of ZAFA Wines. Nicole Triplett in Kalamazoo, Michigan, curates the Roche Collection and ships wine across the country!

The pandemic period has been a time of resetting and learning new things. Y’all might be gardening and baking bread—I’m becoming a wine connoisseur! While that may be a bit of an exaggeration, my sorority little sister, food and wine enthusiast Kelly Mitchell (IG: @kellyselects), produces a wine list that’s simultaneously approachable for the novice and enjoyable for the experts. She makes a point to patronize both small wineries and those owned and run by families and women. I’m striving to emulate this and to be more like Beyoncé every day by creating my own #BlackParade as I support small businesses, in particular, those owned by people of color and women, with my dollars.

It’s the small things that add more life! The City of South Fulton offers its residents something that we’re all learning, once again, to appreciate—quality of life. The big things—malls, franchises, big box chain stores—are not necessarily the things that make communities more livable. Little things often do that. With limitations on globetrotting, the essence of travel and experiencing new things is not only found in far off places. Exploring South Fulton and supporting local businesses can be fun and plays a key role in sustaining the community and showcasing it as a viable destination. Small business, local merchants, family-owned restaurants. Neighbors whose names you actually know. These things all help to make communities more livable.

tions, including Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and the Atlanta Convention and Visitors Bureau, Lyght developed her nontraditional approach to bartending when she became her father’s understudy. Joe Willis, as he is affectionately known, taught her that more important than pouring an outstanding drink, you must first know your client. For over a decade, Lyght has kept that thought at the forefront, while working alongside her father, two brothers, and occasionally her mom, sister, and husband. During the past 14 years, she has held every event staff position, including janitor, dishwasher, server, bar back, bartender, project manager, administrative assistant, HR coordinator, consultant, inventory control specialist, and now mixologist. Lyght constantly practices her craft through research and development and hosting her own private tasting parties. She is actively seeking new taste testers and is excited for you to join the family! Lyght’s latest endeavor, the Inspiring Spirits subscription box, can now be a part of your yearly collection. Sign up to receive four boxes, one for each season, throughout the year, along with special, pop-up boxes during the holidays. Each box includes three delicious gourmet mixers (enough to create two cocktails), garnish and a digital recipe card, all for $49.99. Gwen Jackson of Liquid Distributors
Gwen Jackson started Liquid Distributors, a boutique wholesale/distribution company, after her marketing company client asked her to create some branding strategy for a new cognac brand. “I traveled to Paris to meet her master blender and to tour other cognac brands. It was an experience I will never forget,” says Jackson. Jackson was intrigued and as she discovered more about the spirits industry, she was hooked. After the trip, she decided that she wanted to be a distributor so that she could work with other small brands, specifically those owned by minorities, including women. “The spirits industry is a white male–dominated industry with lots of tricks and failures embedded for only a few to succeed, but I love a challenge,” she says. Since starting in the fourth quarter of 2017, Jackson has adjusted the company objectives to provide branding and marketing, product development and distribution channels. Jackson stated, “Everyday we are building partnerships that can launch small brands into the spotlight for success domestically and internationally.” Check out the new product they imported from Brazil and more at LiquidDistributorsGA.com.

DIRECTIONS 1. Relax and enjoy getting creative with your food! Making a charcuterie board should never be stressful. It’s all about sharing love with your guests by presenting them with something both beautiful and delicious. 2. Gather your selected board or plate and two or three ramekins. 3. Wash and dry your produce ahead of time. 4. Fill your ramekins, then arrange them toward the center of your board. Some options for filling them are hummus, jam, olives, and cornichons. Think about balancing sweet and savory as you make your selections. One way to spruce up hummus is to add a drizzle of olive oil and sprinkle it with Everything But the Bagel seasoning. 5. Slice or cube each of your cheeses in different styles and position them onto your board, evenly spaced from one another. 6. Slice your fruits and vegetables, then posiDr. Billynda McAdoo is an anesthesiologist and Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology at Emory University School of Medicine, a graduate of Harvard University and University

Gee Smalls
Gee and Juan Smalls
VIRGIL’S GULLAH KITCHEN AND BAR HAS BEEN OPEN FOR A LITTLE MORE THAN A YEAR ON MAIN STREET IN HISTORIC COLLEGE PARK. Hapeville residents Gee and Juan Smalls are the owners and take pride in serving up the staple foods of the low country: red rice, crab rice, okra soup, corn muffins. It’s all the flavors of the Charleston area with a large side of Gullah Geechee culture. In his new book, Black Enough, Man Enough, Gee writes about his struggle to fit in. It’s one man’s riveting, contemporary journey to authentically live his unique identity. In a dichotomous world that’s often black and white, he embraces the many diverse shades of gray. “I knew I was different, teased for my light bright skin, soft curly afro, freckly face….” says Gee. “Growing up the child of a black daddy and white momma in the black Gullah Geechee culture on James Island, South Carolina, in the 80s, I was an outsider.” Gee’s adolescent identity crisis led to a trip down the aisle with his high school sweetheart, the joy of fatherhood, and then into the shadows of the down-low before divorce and a tumultuous custody battle. “As I embraced all of who I am, I developed my voice, using it to speak out on the racial and LGBT equality movements,” Gee shares. This is a story of self-discovery, diversity and acceptance as Gee comes into his own. Black Enough, Man Enough is available on Amazon, Kindle and Apple iBooks. CityLifestyle.com/SouthFulton
