Ladies of the Lake Murray region, where would we be without you? It's during May that we, as a country, celebrate mothers, grandmothers, great-grandmothers, motherin-laws, aunts, stepmoms and godmothers. But here at Lake Murray Lifestyle, we also want to recognize other women who build our community and all of your roles as well. It takes a village to raise a child, and our village has women who are our children’s sisters, aunts, teachers, doctors, first responders, law enforcement officers, authors, entertainers, nurses, social workers, counselors and so much more. You are our children’s inspiration, and you are ours. This month, we thank you for everything you pour into the Lake Murray area.

by donated $1 for the opportunity to wear pajamas to school and the funds raised went to koalas affected by the Australia wildfires. The Jessamines meet periodically throughout the year to complete “Done in a Day” service projects. Past projects have included hosting a bake sale at SC Oncology, hosting a bingo game at an assisted living center, making dog treats for an animal shelter, and donating water bottles to the USO lounge at the airport. Chapter meetings are held on the first Tuesday of each month at The Saluda River Club in Lexington -- except for no meetings held in July, August or December. Visitors are welcome at their monthly meetings and at their annual fall membership event. At the time of writing this article, the group didn’t know if they would be able to conduct their annual fundraising event: Bag a Bargain. “It’s really dependent on the virus, the CDC recommendations, and if the schools are closed (the event is held indoors on the campus of RBHS). The event is currently scheduled for May 2,” Sara says. Examples of the group’s volunteer projects include: + Tuck for a Cure event with Pure Barre to collect donations for SCOA Cares + Library book donations to Lexington County Public Libraries + Diabetes Awareness Month in November + Adopt-a-Family through Palmetto Health Children’s Hospital + Clean-Up on Corley Mill Road with Keep the Midlands Beautiful + Heart Health Month awareness in February + Arts & Crafts day at Nancy K. With 100,000 members in affiliated clubs in every state and more than a dozen countries, GFWC members are community leaders who work locally to create global change. ALICIA BARNES TELEVISION ANCHOR/REPORTER + WIS NEWS

YOU’VE WON SEVERAL EXCELLENCE IN BROADCASTING AWARDS. WHAT’S YOUR PERSONAL APPROACH FOR DELIVERING TOPNOTCH COMMUNITY NEWS? My personal approach is to have empathy with every story I tell. As journalists, we tackle some of the most devastating issues that affect everyday lives. I am a very down-to-earth person, and I like viewers to feel like we’re just having a conversation, while I deliver the news of the day. One of the best compliments I received recently, someone told me the way I deliver the news is credible and calming. I just smiled. I anchor the 7 p.m. and 11 p.m. News on WIS, and the NEW 10 p.m. News on The CW. I’ve lived in the Midlands since 2008; Lexington is my home. I’ve served on several boards, emceed various galas, chaired events, visited schools around the Midlands, picked up trash along 378. I’m very passionate about serving and giving back to my community. Currently, I serve on the Lexington Medical Center Foundation board of directors. WITH WIS NEWS 10 BEING CONSIDERED THE NO. 1 NEWS TEAM FOR THE MIDLANDS, WHAT TYPE OF PRESSURE DOES THAT PLACE ON YOU AND YOUR COLLEAGUES EACH DAY, AND HOW DO YOU HANDLE IT? WIS has extremely high standards, which is nice, because when you look around our newsroom, every single person strives to be the best! Our news director, Brad Hyatt, believes in his team, so it’s encouraging to know when you see LIVE, LOCAL, NOW at the start of every newscast, it means we’re live with the best local news coverage immediately. L E A H AV E R Y OWNER/FOUNDER SHIFT STAGING AND DESIGN

YOU HELP CLIENTS SELL HOMES FASTER AND FOR MORE PROFIT -- HOW CRITICAL IS RELEVANT INTERIOR DESIGN TO THAT PROCESS? When a potential buyer enters a home, statistics show they will form an opinion about the space within 8 to 10 seconds. In that short amount of time, they’ll decide if this could be their new home. Staging the home with relevant, transitional furniture gives the potential buyer a sense of scale and furniture placement to enhance the flow and functionality of the space. Seeing a correct furniture layout helps them to think about how their own furniture will look in the room. WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN HOME DECORATING AND STAGING? Home decorating lends itself to a certain level of personalization for the owner. When we stage, our mission is to neutralize the space so that others can imagine how their personal decor would look in each room. We are also sure to make rooms look bigger, brighter, and easy to navigate. CONTINUED >

OUR TOWN (CONTINUED)

LEXINGTON WOMAN'S CLUB The LWC - SC was federated on May 1, 1958. Under the General Federation of Women’s Clubs, they are an international organization dedicated to community improvement through volunteer service. They currently meet monthly at the Lexington County Public Library, 5440 Augusta Road, on the second Monday of the month from September through May. This club’s members have helped with constructing the community public library, providing shelter for veterans and broken families, and breast cancer awareness. A portion of the proceeds from LWC’s 36th Annual Charity Golf Tournament was planned (it was set for March 31 and had to be canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic) to be donated to the Lexington County Sheriff’s Foundation to purchase ballistic plates to enhance vest safety for front-line deputies and school resource officers. Proceeds from this annual tournament also support college scholarships for qualifying graduating seniors enrolled in Lexington School District One high schools and one graduate of the Lexington One Adult Education program.

WOMEN IN PHILANTHROPY | UNITED WAY OF THE MIDLANDS

Stimulating positive changes in community leadership is the goal of Women In Philanthropy, based in Columbia. They promote the concept that every woman can, and must, be a philanthropist if the challenges facing women and families are going to be addressed. Through social and fundraising events -- such as the unique Power of the Purse (a one-of-a-kind auction of designer handbags and other novel items) -and educational and volunteer opportunities, WIP offers investors a variety of ways to stay involved throughout the year. Organizers indicate there are numerous networking and personal development opportunities provided. Additionally, they make annual grants through United Way’s request for proposal processes. Any donor who makes an annual contribution of $500 or more to WIP is an investor. New investors are considered WIP members as soon as their pledge is received. Pledges can be made through United Way workplace campaigns or as individual donations. For additional details, email sbrennecke@uway.org or call 803.733.5400.
