HOW GABE AND HANNAH BAHLHORN ARE MAKING A DIFFERENCE THROUGH MISSIONARY WORK

ARTICLE KATE BAXENDALE | PHOTOGRAPHY PROVIDED

12

Ocean to Ranch Lifestyle | November 2019

THE GIVING SEASON IS OFTEN A TIME WHEN WE THINK OF OTHERS AND PUT THEIR NEEDS BEFORE OUR OWN. For Hannah and Gabe Bahlhorn, however, the giving season is year-round. “My husband—with a couple of his friends a few years ago—started this organization called Missions. Me,” Hannah says. “It’s a faith-based organization that does a lot of humanitarian [work]. They have one aspect of it that does human trafficking homes for girls who’ve been trafficked in Nepal. They do orphanages for street children in India. Another aspect of Missions. Me is their medical branch. In a lot of our faith-based outreaches, we like to bring in a very strong part that is tangible and practical as far as building houses and doing clean water wells. Where I played a role is with the medical clinics.” As a dentist and Mission.Me’s medical director, Hannah is involved in setting up clinics and providing care for people in need. “I’ve organized [trips to] Haiti; I’ve organized trips in the past to Honduras and Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic,” she says. “Recently, we went to the nation of Peru. We had nine or 10 clinics across the country where we brought medical professionals from all over—Australia, we had some from the UK, all over the States—and we bring these doctors, nurses—you name it—chiropractors, EMTs. … We work with organizations like Blessings International and other medical outreaches that do reading glasses or pharmaceuticals, and we open up clinics that are shortterm. They’re run almost like an urgent care for people who have very limited access to care, people who don’t get to see a doctor in their lifetime.” The Bahlhorns were living in Dearborn, Michigan, where Hannah was practicing dentistry, and they both continued their work with Missions.Me. When the organization relocated to Dana Point in 2017, Gabe, Missions. Me’s co-founder and chief communications officer, would often travel to California, which Hannah says became strenuous on their family. In January 2019, they decided to move to San Clemente to be closer to Missions.Me. The short-term medical clinics Missions.Me organizes provide care such as the diagnosis and treatment of sexually transmitted infections, dentistry work such as cleanings and extractions, handing out reading glasses and more. “These types of clinics are meant to be a practical way that we can show love and who we are and what we’re committed to doing, which is a faith-based role, so we always have some aspect of that,” Hannah says. “What we like to do is a short trip that leaves a really large CONTINUED >

1Nation1Day, which started in Honduras in 2013. The vision of the movement is “the salvation and transformation of entire nations.” “That’s where we bring people from all over the world,” Hannah says. “We’ve actually had to charter our own planes because we’re bringing such a large scale of people in—like when we were in Honduras, we’re literally bringing that many missionaries in at one time.” Gabe says he and his wife are involved in missionary work because they are giving their lives for

something that’s greater than themselves. “We are the most connected generation that’s ever been … yet we are the most isolated,” Gabe says. “We feel, personally, we can’t love God unless we love people. We esteem them as more important than ourselves. If you look at the life of Jesus ... to know him is to love God and to love your neighbors as yourself. We live in a world that has forgotten that in so many ways.” “I have a passion for travel, and I love people,” Hannah adds. “I do have a passion that we are citizens of the world. We’re not just citizens of our one country. So for me, if I’m touching one person from Peru or touching someone from India, it’s the same thing as touching someone from right next door.” While the Bahlhorns have done extensive outreach to nations around the world, they also help people at home. Hannah works at Ivory Pointe Dental in Vista, California, and Gabe is spearheading 1DayLA, an event scheduled for July 2020. “This will look very different from anything else we’ve ever done before,” Gabe says. Hannah adds, “We are hoping to bring up to 20,000 volunteers for one week … So that’s what

100% natural and nontoxic 100% formulated, loved, and made by us 100% beautifully sumptuous

we’re working on right now. We’re not going to reinvent the wheel. We’re just going to put a lot of muscle behind what people are already doing.” 1DayLA’s message is “Love Has No Limits,” a message Gabe says is crucial due to a general consensus that 2020 will be a divisive year politically. The movement aims to partner with organizations already working in Los Angeles “to provide the greatest display of love the city of Los Angeles has ever experienced.” To date, Missions.Me has reached more than 2.5 million people globally. RENOVATE & REFINE

COZY up your HOME TAKE A CUE FROM THE SCANDINAVIAN CONCEPT OF HYGGE AND WELCOME THE TRANSITION OF SUMMER TO AUTUMN WITH A RELAXING REFRESH

16

Ocean to Ranch Lifestyle | November 2019

PUMPKIN SPICE, APPLE CINNAMON AND A HOT CUP OF COCOA. Fall is all about getting warm and comfy as a chill hits the air—preparing yourself for winter, and cherishing those final moments of summer. As the nights grow longer, we’re embracing the Scandinavian secret of hygge by creating a space that emphasizes simple pleasures and finding joy in everyday moments—even when the weather is dreary. A burnt orange adirondack rug and woodland pillow set a ‘cozy cabin’ mood. Wicker baskets filled with apples and gourds are a reminder of the importance of the harvest, and a fun way to help teach young kids about the changing of the seasons. During this transitional time, light wood, fluffy blankets and scented candles beckon crisp autumn evenings, while a vase of fresh flowers—particularly mums—are an ode to the bright, sunny days we’re not quite ready to give up yet.

MOSCATO D’ASTI + GRANDMA’S PUMPKIN PIE

WHITES Rich,

full-bodied

whites

like

Chardonnay, Viognier, Gewürztraminer and Rhône White Blends pair delightfully with many of the dishes found on the Thanksgiving table. For example, pumpkin soup or butternut squash with brown butter and sage is a delicious match for a richly textured Chardonnay. The warmer spices of autumn, like nutmeg, cinnamon and clove, are complementary to this style of wine, as many have similar notes interwoven with toasted oak nuances.

REDS Pinot Noir, Beaujolais and lighter bodied Cabernet Franc from the Loire Valley make excellent companions to the savory, herb-inflected dishes at a typical Thanksgiving feast. The elevated acidity, as well as the nuances of mushroom and dried herbs, make these wines stellar accompaniments, keeping your palate refreshed while elevating the complementary notes found in the food.

ROSÉS In years past, most people wouldn’t think to pull out their favorite rosé to

LAMBRUSCO + MOM’S SWEET POTATO CASSEROLE

pair with Thanksgiving dinner, but it’s actually a fantastic wine to have handy this time of year. Fuller-bodied rosé made with Grenache, Syrah and Cabernet Franc are excellent matches for the richer foods that make their way to the holiday table, the juicy acidity keeping your palate from becoming tired and overwhelmed from all the sumptuous dishes.

Did You Know?

A caldera is a large volcanic crater typically formed by a major eruption leading to the collapse of the mouth of a volcano. Forming the southernmost member of the Cyclades island group, Santorini is the remains of the Minoan eruption that, 3,600 years ago, destroyed a formerly single island and created the current caldera.

experience SUNSET VIEWS

About 25 minutes up the coast is where you can catch sights of what people often refer to as arguably the best sunsets you’ll ever see. Catch some of the best panoramic views of Santorini from 15th-century Byzantine castle ruins. Situated on the side of caldera cliffs, Oia village offers tons of breathtaking viewing spots. Be sure to get there well before sunset—because of the area’s sundown popularity, you’ll find crowds of people gathered on streets, rooftops and stairs anticipating the one-of-akind experience.

W I NTER’S R E VEL YOUR GUIDE TO A SIMPLE AND STYLIZED NEW YEAR’S SOIRÉE

FOLLOWING CLOSELY ON THE COATTAILS OF AUTUMNAL AND WINTER HOLIDAYS, THE NEW YEAR CAN OFTEN BE OVERLOOKED DUE TO AN UNDERSTANDABLE DESIRE TO TAKE A BREAK FROM THE HUSTLE AND BUSTLE OF THE SEASON. But, a holiday that celebrates past memories and the opportunity for a fresh start shouldn’t lack any of the glitz of its celebratory predecessors. Round out the final days of the year reminiscing on or saying goodbye to the experiences of the previous 12 months with a simple end-of-theyear gathering that isn’t lacking any of the glamour.

1

TH E D R INK S

Champagne has long been a traditional drink to toast to the new year. Keep it simple but step up your game with your own DIY Champagne cocktail

2

THE D ECOR There’s no need to go out and buy a ton of additional decor when you just decked the halls (quite literally) with holiday ornamentation. Make those decorations work as hard as you did by repurposing all the greenery, pine cones and wood place settings you just couldn’t say no to. Throw in some neutral napkins, some natural twine and some dried orange peels for a woodsy (and fragrant) twist.

bar. Consider stocking your bar full of custom Champagne or bubbly choices, festive mixers like cranberry juice or rosemary simple syrup and unique garnishes like fresh fruit and herbs or decorative ice cubes with edible flowers.

WHAT YOU NEED + Cheese board or serving plate + Assortment of cheeses

3

(We recommend Brie, Port Salut, Muenster, Camembert or Gruyere) PUTTING IT TOGETHER

THE SNACKS

Keep your guests happy with the perfect cheese plate. Consider how many people you’ll be serving, whether you’ll be serving before or after dinner and what cheeses you’ll want to include. According to WineFolly.com, sparkling wines pair best with creamy, sticky cheeses due to the high acidity and carbonation.

26

Ocean to Ranch Lifestyle | November 2019

Cheese is best served at room temperature, so be sure your cheese has time to rest prior to serving. Slice the cheeses and arrange artfully on your cheese board with labels for each. Consider providing separate serving knives for each cheese to avoid any mixing of flavors. Add any additional bites you’d like and enjoy!
