INSPIRED BY

A Wo m a n ’s J o u r n e y to At ta i n L i f e lo n g W e l l n e s s SUZANNE FORNARO WAS VISITING HER CHIROPRACTOR, COMPLAINING OF NOT FEELING WELL AND HER BODY ALWAYS BEING SORE. Suzanne is a speech therapist, working with children and spending a lot of time playing with them on the floor. She started to notice it was becoming difficult to get up and down on the floor. This was when she knew she needed a life change. Now, three years later, Suzanne has restored her energy and has kept off the 42 pounds she lost. Suzanne says she owes her life-changing transformation to Dr. Lori Gerber and Life Coach Shawn Szalabofka at Refresh Integrative. Suzanne continues to check in with Refresh every two weeks and says it helps to keep her on track. NEWTOWN LIFESTYLE: WHAT DOES WELLNESS MEAN TO YOU? SUZANNE FORNARO: Many people may view wellness as weight loss. Wellness, to me, has been much more than just weight loss. Through this program, I have lost the weight I had unsuccessfully tried to loose before, restored energy, stress reduction, I sleep better and have a better quality of life. Wellness has become more than just diet, it is now a way of life for me.  NL: WHAT IS DIFFERENT ABOUT THE PROGRAM AT REFRESH INTEGRATIVE MEDICINE AND AESTHETICS COMPARED TO OTHER WELLNESS OR WEIGHT LOSS PROGRAMS YOU'VE TRIED?  SF: From the first consultation, I knew Dr. Gerber and Shawn were different. I tried other weight loss programs in the past and had some success, but I was frustrated with places that had one broad plan that is usually the same for everyone. Refresh works with you one-on-one and gives you the individual attention that other programs don't. Dr. Gerber has a different type of insight into things, she is not afraid to try new things and think outside the box. After my bloodwork, Dr. Gerber saw that I had very low testosterone, so she added some bioidentical testosterone. My thyroid was low functioning so we optimized that with iodine and D3 as well as A and K2. Dr. Gerber suggested a green leafy diet and DIM (broccoli extract.) I also had very low progesterone, so we supplemented some bioidentical progesterone to help my sleep and weight. She also suggested a probiotic.  NL: WHAT DO YOU THINK SPECIFICALLY WAS THE KEY TO YOUR TRANSFORMATION?  SF: I got to the point where I knew I needed to become aware of the need to make

KNOWING THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN WELLNESS AND WEIGHTLOSS

choices toward a healthy and fulfilling life. Refresh gave me guidelines on the types of food to eat and what to stay away from. There are lists of foods in three categories, red, yellow, and green. "Red" are foods you should stay away from, such as sugary foods high in carbohydrates,"yellow" are foods you can have once in awhile, and the "green" foods are mostly vegetables and lean proteins that should make up the majority of your diet. Another key is to avoid anything processed or filled with artificial ingredients and be sure to drink water. Lots and lots of water, it really helps with getting rid of any inflammation. 12

THE EAGLES AND CHOP CREATED A SENSORY ROOM AT THE LINC FOR KIDS AND ADULTS WITH AUTISM

Newtown Lifestyle | January 2020

THE PHILADELPHIA EAGLES HAVE GONE ABOVE AND BEYOND TO BE INCLUSIVE FOR THEIR FANS ON THE AUTISM SPECTRUM. The Eagles partnered with Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), a founding beneficiary partner of the Eagles Autism Challenge, to open one of the first fully-certified sensory rooms at a sports stadium for children and adults with autism. The Eagles have also partnered with KultureCity, a nonprofit based in Birmingham, Alabama, to create the room as part of a new initiative to promote accommodating and positive experiences for all fans. KultureCity helped the Eagles get the stadium up to "sensory-inclusive" certification standards. The addition of this state-of-the-art sensory room officially makes Lincoln Financial Field a sensory-inclusive stadium. The "no re-entry" rule that's applied at Lincoln Financial Field, as well as most major venues, can make a family coping with sensory needs think twice

For fans who might get too overwhelmed by the loud noises and bright lights on the field, the sensory room offers the next needed step, a quiet spot to regroup. "They can't see the field, but that's kind of on purpose, so they can take a break, center themselves and rejoin the experience," explained Ryan Hammond, Executive Director of the Eagles Autism Challenge.

“With the opening of Lincoln Financial Field in 2003, we made it an organizational priority to create a one-of-a-kind experience for guests in a safe, friendly and inclusive environment.

One in 59 children has been identified with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Sensory tools aren't just for individuals on the autism spectrum - one in six children in the US have a development disability, a CDC study says. The goal, KultureCity Chief Operating Officer Uma Srivastava says, is to "prevent social isolation for those with sensory needs. We provide sensory tools and recommendations to make simple modifications so an individual with sensory needs is able to enjoy anything." The KultureCity app also offers a "social story" experience for all of their sensory-inclusive certified venues, so families can prepare for their experience and know what amenities are available. As a part of the certification about 700 gameday and full-time Eagles employees were trained how to recognize and help fans who might be experiencing a sensory overload situation, Hammond said. Even the Eagles mascot, Swoop, is prepared on how to best visit with fans with sensory needs. One dad who brought his twins to the soft opening of the sensory room during a general admission team practice on August 4, said Swoop really made his kids feel comfortable. 16

4 BARRE WORKOUTS YOU CAN DO FROM HOME

1 SUMO SQUAT (TO WARM UP THE BODY) Step feet out wider than hip width and turn out the toes slightly. Bend your knees and sit you seat down behind you like you’re sitting in a chair with your hands in prayer. Your weight is in your heels, toes light. The knees are stacked over the ankles. Your spine is on the incline, shoulders released down the back, abs pulling in around your spine, tailbone reaching long. Action: Push into the heels, engaging the back body, and rise tall. Being careful not to lock the knees or thrust your hips forward at the top. Stand tall through the spine as you push your palms back. Then repeat, sitting back into the squat. Do this large range motion for 2-3 minutes to get your body warm for deeper muscle work. Benefit: Warm the body to prepare for more load and resistance and prevent injury.

2 POWER LEG (TARGETING THE LEGS, PRIMARY BURN IN THE QUADRICEPS) Stand tall with your feet parallel, hip width distance (directly below your frontal hip points, not the outer hips). Lift your heels, bend your knees and slide you back straight down an imaginary wall behind you. Hold low here. Press into the toes, stabilize your heels and ankles. The knees are forward over the toes and the hips line up over the heels. Engage your core and stack the shoulders over the hips with a long, upright spine. This is a balance challenge, so feel free to use a counter or chair for additional stability. Action: In a small range of motion, just 1 inch, bend your knees and slide your back straight down and then lift back up only that same small 1 inch. Repeat this 1 inch move for 2-3 minutes. For any discomfort in the knees or low back, consider hinging the chest slightly forward. Benefit: Build strength in the legs, specifically the quads for better movement. Find stability in the ankles, knees, and hips. Increase balance and find better posture.

20

Newtown Lifestyle | January 2020

(CON TI N UED)

3 PLANK (WEIGHT BEARING POSTURE TARGETING CORE AND UPPER BODY) Place palms at shoulder width distance on the floor or on a counter/chair and extend the legs back, feet in parallel, hip width distance. Elbows are soft, not locked, and slightly rotated inward. Shoulders are wide and down the back. Spine is long with heart lifting towards the ceiling, ribs and abs pulling inward. Tailbone reaches long, hips are level. Lift and lengthen the legs and press through your toes. Action: Continue to press the palms and the right toes into the floor then bend your left knee and pull in towards the chest. The key is to keep the shoulders and hips level and stable while moving the knee. Move slowly and feel the load of the lifted knee in your core. Return the left toes to the floor and repeat with the right knee. Remain steady through your core as you move the legs. Imagine balancing a tray of drinks on your back while the legs move one at a time. Repeat for 1 minute. Benefit: Build strength in the core, all around the spine. Train your body tall and long to have good posture, a healthy spine, and a strong center.

4

BRIDGE LIFT (TARGETING BACK BODY: GLUTES, HAMSTRINGS, AND CORE) Sit with your knees bent in front of you, feet hip width distance on the floor. Roll down onto your back, then slide your hips closer to your heels so the knees track directly over the ankles. Adjust for comfort in the knees as needed. Press into the feet and lift your hips up. Your feet are heavy in the floor, knees over the ankles, hips are level and lifted. The base of your shoulder blades stay anchored on the floor, plug the shoulders down as well, There’s a tunnel of air under your neck. Action: Keep your spine long and hips level, as you lower your hips down to a hover above the floor. Then push from your heels and lift the hips back up without lifting the shoulder blades or arching your back. Feel the lift through your hamstrings and into your glutes. Repeat for 2-4 minutes. Option: For a deeper connection, hold the hips up and stabilize. Then lift one knee up to table top without shifting your hips or moving your spine. Feel the action move up into the ab wall, all around the spine. Slowly place the foot down and repeat with the other leg into a march. Keep this slow for 30 seconds - 1 minute. Benefit: Strengthen the back body and build balance in the body, front to back. Strong glutes protect the low back and the knees and are powerhouse muscles that keep the hips healthy and strong.  January 2020 | Newtown Lifestyle

TRANSFORMING YOUR KITCHEN INTO TIMELESS ELEGANCE

ADD SIMPLICITY AND SERENITY TO CREATE A KITCHEN YOU WILL NEVER WANT TO LEAVE

Newtown Lifestyle | January 2020

A MAJOR HOME RENOVATION PROJECT CAN BE COSTLY AND A LOT OF WORK, ESPECIALLY WHEN IT COMES TO ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT ROOMS IN YOUR HOME - THE KITCHEN. You want to create a space that you’ll love for a long time, and you want to get it right the first time. With this kitchen, Hamilton Building Supply Home in Newtown focused on Timeless Elegance as their theme. HBS Home handled the cabinetry and chose Mouser  Centra  Cabinets, with a radiance beaded inset and white paint. To help create timeless elegance, try selecting soft neutrals, and while dark pops of coloring are becoming more popular, white is always in style. White kitchens work well for smaller spaces, and help to create the feeling of light and openness. If you choose stained wood, select a mid-range stain, nothing too dark or too pale. Try to select a backsplash, countertop, and floor that doesn’t have too

Princeton Stone and Tile and the backsplash tile from Suburban Marble & Granite. Professional grade appliances cost a bit more, but are likely to last much longer. They also don’t look dated as quickly. Home staging for this special project was done by Amber Sciascia, and the contractor was  Adam Yeager. The kitchen window was also supplied by Hamilton Building Supply. The client originally had a partial wall that separated the main kitchen from the eating area.  The wall was removed to unify both areas, creating an open space ideal for entertaining. A passthru wall was also eliminated to make room for a stately wood paneled hood and additional wall cabinet storage.  Pipes in a soffit could not entirely be removed, so the crown moulding assembly was designed to hide the pipes and seamlessly bring the cabinets with crown to the ceiling. A pantry closet was turned in to a beverage center niche with retractable counter wall cabinet doors that can be left open for easy access to glassware and mugs. Contrasting floating wood stained shelving was added to one wall for visual interest. A few other notable accessories were a tall cabinet to the left of the refrigerator with tray/serving dish storage. There is also a drawer base cabinet in the island with peg inserts to store dishware.

deceive any dairy-lover, this vegan lasagna recipe is rich in satisfying protein and antioxidants. Vitamins A and C are abundant to support the immune system this time of year and fiber feeds a healthy gut.

INGREDIENTS + 8 oz package no boil lentil lasagna noodles (or other no boil noodle) + 1 batch, tofu ricotta + 32 oz jar no sugar added marinara + 3 Tbsp olive oil, divided + 4 cups fresh chopped vegetables, such as bell peppers, mushrooms and eggplant + 2 cups frozen spinach + ¼ cup water + 3 tbsp cashews Optional:

+ 8 oz package cashew mozzarella alternative INSTRUCTIONS 1. Heat 2 tbsp olive oil over a sautee pan before adding your chopped vegetables. Stir and cover, letting cook for 10 minutes over low to medium heat, stirring occasionally. 2. Add all tofu ricotta ingredients to a food processor or high quality blender and pulse for 10-15 seconds, or until smooth. 3. Heat oven to 350 degrees F. 4. Drizzle the remaining tablespoon of olive oil on the bottom of a 8x12 or similar sized baking dish. Spread one 1/4 cup of the marinara sauce onto the bottom of the dish before adding lasagna noodles. If you are also using a cashew mozzarella, add half at this time. 5. Spread half of the tofu ricotta mixture on top of the noodles before sprinkling half of the cooked vegetables and frozen spinach. Add a second layer of noodles, 1 ¼ additional cups of sauce, the remaining tofu and vegetables and the optional cashew mozzarella before topping with a third and final layer of noodles. Add the remaining 1 ½ cups of sauce over the noodles, as well as ¼ cup of water. 6. Bake, covered, for 35 minutes at 400. While lasagna is baking, pulse the cashews in a small food processor or blender. Sprinkle over top of the lasagna after 35 minutes and place back in the oven for an additional 5 minutes, uncovered.  January 2020 | Newtown Lifestyle
