Letter from the Editor SUMMER IS FINALLY HERE, AND WARM SUNNY DAYS ARE CALLING MY NAME. After the spring we just experienced with a standstill on all activities, sports and a schedule to maintain, my kids spent time entertaining themselves with things that I haven’t seen them do for years. Not only did the Legos make their way out of storage, but without the demands of our normally completely full schedule, we had time to slow down and ride bikes every day, hike, fish and try games we didn’t know we would enjoy so much. In the midst of the obvious devastation of the past few months, there has been a part of this time period that has been a positive experience for many families that needed to slow down and enjoy life together in a different way—a time that was reminiscent of our own childhoods when things were a little simpler.

The best part of being at the lake was not having an agenda. We just enjoyed time as a family doing ordinary things. So much of this time period recently has reminded me of those days. Although I have greatly missed watching my kids play the sports they love and the activities we are used to doing, I am looking forward to a summer of spending quality time with my family enjoying the simple things in life like a fire-pit on a starry night, and maybe I can talk them into a game of charades.

SOMETIMES, A THOUGHT CAN CHANGE THE WORLD, AND THAT IS WHAT GREGORY BORTNICK IS DOING. When he realized that masks doctors and nurses are wearing can put pressure on their ears and cause pain, he decided to create a device that would alleviate this problem. That is why he created Ear Ease, a little invention to relieve ear pain from mask wearing.

“My family has always had a passion for volunteering, and I knew I could design something that would make masks more comfortable,” Bortnick says. “I looked online for some sort of hair clip and found inspiration to make my own design. I downloaded the design file

and printed it with my 3D printer. I distributed them to nurses and got their feedback, then ramped it up a notch so my design is lighter and stronger.”

His 3D printer prints plastic, which is actually the printer’s ink. In the photos, you can see a spool on top of the printer, which holds the plastic and dispenses it to the printer. So there is no cutting but more printing.

A junior at Kansas University, he is studying mechanical engineering, and this design is an extension of his skills. When forced to come home early and take classes online due to the coronavirus, he put that extra time on his hands to good use.

His parents have always encouraged him and his brother to give back to their community from an early age.

They have worked a lot with Harvesters, and he has done different sports drives for Operation Breakthrough.

“We have distributed the Ear Ease pieces to KU Medical Center, Truman Medical Center, Advent Health and others in the Kansas City area,” he says. “I had some connections in New York, and now we are sending 250 pieces a week to them. My friend’s sister is a doctor in Michigan, and we are getting them there, too. We mail them, and my mom and I fill the orders.”

Dr. Julie Brown Longly, pediatrician and Leawood resident, commented about how the Ear Ease device is helping. “Our emergency room physicians and nurses who are wearing their masks for 10 to 12 hours at a time have been so thankful for this device as it has alleviated the pressure and sores that were developing behind their ears,” she says. “As a clinic physician I find that it also helps my mask fit snugly and appropriately against my face and also alleviated the ear pain—it’s a game changer!”

In his free time when not quarantining, Bortnick enjoys designing things and likes to use his engineering design and creativity to do something to help people. He graduated from Pembroke Hill High School where he played lacrosse and will graduate from KU in the spring of 2021.

“Hopefully, we will be able to go back to actual class next fall,” he says. “I do plan to continue creating my design and, in the future, will offer them to different businesses like restaurants and put their logo on them so

INTERIOR DESIGNER JOSUE MONTES CAN TRACE HIS DESIGN INSTINCTS BACK TO HIS 6-YEAR-OLD SELF. He recalls offering his opinion while furniture shopping with his parents or building living room forts that his mother described as “meticulously done.”

But he didn’t begin to take interior design seriously until he moved to Kansas City in 2008. His partner wanted to make his place theirs, and it quickly became his first project.

“I literally sold everything in his condo,” he says. “I mean everything, to the point where we’re sleeping on a blow-up mattress as I was redoing our condo.”

When neighbors would come over for a cocktail, they’d compliment their home and ask who the interior designer was, which led Montes to more offers. He began helping his neighbors and friends of neighbors with their spaces in exchange for a nice dinner or a small fee until 2015 when he established his LLC, 1 Dapper Latino.

He describes his style in their own home as eclectic—a little contemporary mixed with traditional. While each project’s aesthetic differs from client to client based on their desires, Montes wants to steer clear of the space feeling sterile. Rather, he aims to create spaces in which clients feel a sense of relief each time they walk through the door.

“When you get home from a long day, I want that to be like, ‘Oh my gosh, this is paradise for me. This is home,’” he says.

Montes finds a lot of inspiration in light fixtures and will typically center the project around this statement piece. This was true even for his first project when he remodeled his partner’s condo—the first piece he bought was a black, crystal chandelier.

“I always say the door is the lipstick to your house, and the light fixtures are the earrings, the jewelry,” he says. “I want people’s homes to be warm.”

Establishing a sense of cohesiveness is also important to Montes, which he says can be accomplished using patterns, color, furniture or statement pieces, like light fixtures.

“Cohesiveness—a lot of people think that everything has to be matchy-matchy,” he says. “That’s not true. You can have something that’s different, it just needs to flow. It can start from your front door all the way to your lanai, as long as there is some sort of flow.”

What he enjoys most about his job is revitalizing spaces that maybe haven’t been touched in years.

“I do really find a true fulfillment, and it just really warms my heart to be able to breathe new life into people’s spaces,” he says. “I’m sure all the designers have the same feeling, but right now, me being relatively new to the game really legit business-wise, I feel like I still have that 6-year-old inside of me that when I look at somebody’s home, like ‘Oh my god, this is what I want to do.’”

“Everybody who runs for office has this 100-day plan, and you realize how quickly that won’t be occurring,” Mayor Lucas says with a laugh. “From Day 1, this year has been historic. From our city’s first Super Bowl in half a century to a global pandemic the likes of which hasn’t been seen in a full century, these are the kinds of events you could never anticipate.”

What has been even more remarkable to Mayor Lucas is how great Kansas Citians have

“It’s who we are as people and who we are in our human nature,” Mayor Lucas says. “Kansas City received the message that even if you’re a healthy person, even if you’re someone who thinks they can bounce back, the worry is for so many others in our community, like the immune-compromised, the elderly and the vulnerable.

It’s amazing to see how quickly our people adapted to changing the way we lived.”

Mayor Lucas is no stranger to adapting. His well-documented background prepared him for this moment. Often homeless in east Kansas City with his single mother and sisters, he learned to negotiate the extremes in his life. Those skills would empower him years later to represent all segments of the city he leads.

“In my life story, I talk about the diverse set of experiences and influences I had. I still remember when I was in 6th or 7th grade, and we were homeless. I was living in a one-room motel with my sisters and my mother in east Kansas City. I was a homeless kid who was going to The Barstow School on scholarship. That taught me a heck of a lot about adversity and how to adapt. You realize what your goal is each day. You certainly recognize it’s not easy, but you know that no matter the challenge, you’ll get through it. That was a big part of my ability to handle any number of life’s challenges. And this pandemic has been a significant one, too.”

Nicknamed “the little professor” as a child, Mayor Lucas would grow up to become one. After earning degrees from Washington University and Cornell Law School, he joined the University of Kansas faculty at age 28, making him one of the youngest tenure-track law professors in the country. His work on the city council and volunteerism in prisons and schools continues to drive his decisions today. His intelligence, positive energy, competence and likeability all contributed to Lucas besting 10 opponents last year to succeed Sly James as KC’s new mayor.

Today, from his view on the 29th floor of city hall or from his apartment in the historic jazz district of 18th and Vine, Mayor Lucas has scaled high but reaches deep. His heart aches for the East side and the urban core where he wants to effect real and lasting changes in education, housing, infrastructure, crime prevention and other initiatives. From his windows, he often watches his beloved KC sunsets descend over storms. They’re images of hope that tomorrow will hold brighter days for districts slammed by vicious statistics, especially his hometown 3rd District where the virus has hit unusually hard.

In the past several weeks, Mayor Lucas says he has probably spent more time with area leaders than in all his past years on city council.

“The collaboration across jurisdictions from Lee’s Summit, Johnson County, Wyandotte County, and others has made me incredibly proud and excited for what that means, not only for fighting this issue now, but for what we can accomplish in the future.”

Mayor Lucas says that what really sets KC apart is how giving we are. Whether through structured philanthropy or just one-to-one generosity, such as delivering food to elderly neighbors, our people are willing to help each other out.

Mayor Lucas adds that he has no doubts KC will do all it can to help its neighbors and small businesses during the next phases of economic recovery.

“I know KC will do it,” he says, “because we are a resilient city.

During the influenza outbreak of 1918, Kansas City was a big city then, and we got through that, and we will get through this one, too.

So my message to all Kansas Citians is keep up that spirit.”
