This spring, in particular, is special for me because it is the introduction of Boerne Lifestyle magazine to the community and it represents a true labor of love. Although I have lived in the same neighborhood for almost 20 years, I have truly enjoyed getting to know where I live again. I am honored to bring this publication to you, and my goal is to connect readers to the special people and happenings this unique area has to offer. Each month the publication will cover the city and the hill country with content on local businesses, dining, art, fashion, events, property features, recipes, real estate and stories on local influencers. In a world of uncertainty and oftentimes crazy news, Boerne Lifestyle allows for a break and an escape to simply appreciate community.

KATE AND CHAD COOLEY ARE THE CREATIVE MINDS BEHIND COOLEY PORTRAITS, FORMERLY KNOWN AS SIMPLY SERIE PHOTOGRAPHY. The Cooleys are innovating the luxury photography business by using portrait photography to preserve priceless memories. Kate and Chad are Texas Tech alumni and met while pursuing their Bachelors degrees. Kate’s creative talent and Chad’s eye for design combine to offer every client a full-service, fully customized experience. Cooley Portraits strives to capture the authentic beauty in every moment so you can remember how wonderful life can be. They believe in the power of a tangible portrait. In a digital world where memories are reduced to news-feed images and milestones disappear after 24 hours, portraits are works of art that stay with a family for generations and emphasize what truly matters. Each Cooley Portraits experience begins with an introductory phone call, in which Kate and Chad will conduct a brief interview concerning your vision, goals, and intention for your portrait session. The Cooleys want to learn as much as they can about you and your family so they can tailor every aspect of the experience for your benefit. Your story is the most valuable tool in their collection when it comes to creating portraits your loved ones will pass down for generations. Shortly after, Kate will organize an in-home consultation to offer insight on setting, wardrobe, and style. Since everything is planned out ahead of time, you can expect a stress-free experience on the day of your session. Cooley Portrait’s resident hair and makeup artist will make everyone look their best, so all you have to do is sit still and look pretty. Younger children will be corralled and organized, so you don’t have to worry about missed nap times or afternoon crankiness. Roll your shoulders back, smile big, and trust that Kate has everything covered. Whether you want an heirloom album, a handmade canvas, or a framed portrait, Chad will help you find the perfect venue to display your new artwork. His exclusive photography software allows you to visualize any portrait or handmade canvas on any wall in your home. This ensures that your portrait is Goldilocks-approved: not too big, not too small, but just right! After your artwork has been commissioned, the Cooleys will provide complimentary delivery and installation. All that remains is years of enjoying your family portrait, album, or gallery wall. Every product is designed to help you remember your why - why your memories are worth preserving. In 2020, Chad and Kate want to focus on creating unforgettable moments for their families and clients. They will be moving into a new studio space and plan to host an open house where everyone can get a taste of the Cooley Portrait experience. Follow their progress on their Facebook or Instagram pages, @simplyseriephotography, and reach out if you have any questions about their services. Preserve your memories in 2020 with Cooley Portraits. 10

COMBINES HERITAGE AND THE ARTS LOCATED IN THE MIDDLE OF BOERNE THE HERITAGE MUSEUM IS RENOVATED AND OPEN FOR EVENTS.

THE AGRICULTURAL HERITAGE CENTER INC. IN BOERNE WAS ESTABLISHED IN 1986 BY A GROUP OF LOCAL FARMERS AND HAS BEEN REBRANDED AS THE AGRICULTURAL AND OFFERS A HOME TO HILL COUNTRY COUNCIL FOR THE ARTS. The five acres is a beautiful rustic venue for art classes and exhibits as well as heritage classes such as wood working, Dutch oven cooking and blacksmithing. The property is covered in heritage oaks and buildings like the Pioneer House and the Red Barn with collections of antique tractors, combines, house and farm items, a blacksmith shop, a wood working shop with belt driven tools, and a wagon shed with horse drawn wagons or buggies. The City of Boerne graciously offered a tenKristy Watson and Zeus 12

HOT SPOT (CONTINUED)

Boerne Lifestyle Magazine spoke with President Kristy Watson and Treasurer Rob Ziegler who shared exciting plans for renovations. “We feel we have a unique space in the heart of Boerne that still has that vintage look we want to maintain.” On March 28, The AgriCultural will host a fundraiser in the Red Barn featuring the Lone Star Swing Orchestra playing 1940s style music. The Boerne Village Band will open the event with 1940s style music instead of their usual German favorites. 1940s style attire is encouraged but not required. In order to host big events, renovations are planned to install more sinks in the buildings so that caterers have the space and equipment they need to support a successful event. The woodshop is repurposed into a bar for events. New restrooms will be installed in the Red Barn as well as much needed heating and air conditioning. The City will assist with funding for electricity so that events like art shows will have the necessary lighting that is needed to showcase the artwork. The Green Building will be refurbished to create a utility-type art house, complete with concrete floors and a sink to make cleanup easier after workshops. The AgriCultural offers space for rent and hosted the organizers of the Shrimp and Music Fest in September. The Boerne BierFest will hold its annual event for the second year at The AgriCultural on April 4. On May 2 The AgriCultural will be the scene of Boerne’s annual Quilt Fest and add a Vintage Truck Show to create an exciting festival. The Hill Country Invitational Art Show was held in October and will be featured on the property again in 2020. The Red Barn will hold from 100 to 250 guests for weddings and the Pioneer House can be rented for meetings, classes and parties. Bluegrass picking circles are held on the second and fourth Saturdays of the month. It has proven to be a popular event for musicians as well as music lovers. In 2020 blacksmithing classes will be held monthly as well a Dutch oven cooking contest. The woodshop will be set up to host woodworkers with an opportunity to create items for sale. Eventually the plan is to sell paintings, pottery and blacksmith creations made on the property. Boerne Lifestyle Magazine recommends checking out the website for events and register for The AgriCultural Gala on March 28. It will be a fun night to swing dance the night away under the bedazzled sparkling tractor disco ball in the Red Barn. Tickets are $50 per person. Or you can visit the site any Saturday from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Admission is by donation and is staffed by volunteers. The address is 102 City Park Road just off Hwy. 46 in Boerne.

The Historic Homestead is a fabulous collaboration of historic architecture and modern luxuries completed in 2019. The project is designed into a fictional story spanning 200 years of German heritage and settlement in the Texas Hill Country. An entertaining home, with plenty of options for an ol’ cowboy to kick up his heels and tell tall tales of the roving bands of native Comanche and Apache that camped here at the confluence of Block Creek and the Guadalupe; or, where the Old Number Nine Railroad once hustled through the dramatic hills of the Edwards Plateau. Each locally sourced limestone was hand carved to match the care and craftsmanship of 1800’s stone masons. Reclaimed long leaf pine, cypress, douglas fir, kumaru and mahogany adorn the floors, facades, and handcrafted doors and windows.

The GRIT family of companies is proud to present:

Three all masonry rumford fireplaces embrace the home in warmth during cold winters. Double hung Marvin windows look and feel proper to the period and maintain the highest qualities of present. Steel window walls and french doors visually bring the millennia oaks and landscape right into the home. Smart lighting, wireless sound, and highest-grade HVAC systems make the entire home comfortable and manageable at the lift of a smart phone. There’s even a hand-hewn log cabin and porch flanking the main house; perhaps the original settler’s home, now a haven for authoring a memoir or sipping a fine Hill Country Wine. The project was designed by Randy Stehling of Stehling Klein Thomas and Grit.

ingredients + Prep

Depending on what you order, you may need some of your own supplies. When you select your meals, think about what you will need to cook the food in and if any other kitchen utensils would be helpful. Have them ready to go so you don’t have to make any last-minute trips to the store, defeating the purpose of getting your box delivered! Look over the prep times and cook times to ensure you won’t be rushed, and have fun! If the meals are foods you would enjoy reheated, you could do all of your cooking the day you get the box to meal prep for your week, or you can just store the ingredients to the other meals in your fridge and cook them throughout the week.

If you’re a little less-experienced in the kitchen, meal kits are great for learning! Read the instructions carefully before you get started so you don’t feel frazzled while the heat is up high, and take your time. Gobble is great for beginners because all of the meals are prepped for you and can be cooked in 15 minutes with just one skillet. If you want to learn how to do more plant-based cooking for your health and the environment, Purple Carrot makes it easy to enjoy delicious meals and not even miss the meat. If you are a more seasoned chef, feel free to take your own spin on the recipes and add some extra flavor or swap out ingredients to make it perfect for your palate.
